Każda ocena jest wypadkową subiektywnych wrażeń oceniającego. Przypadł mi zaszczyt zrecenzowania i oceny „Silent Hill: The Room” i czynię to z wielką przyjemnością.

Most survival-horror games offer pretty much the same sort of thing. You get to drudge through a few areas where enemies like to pop up and scare you, gradually collecting keys to unlock new areas and continue on your trek; toss in the occasional puzzle and boss fight and you’ve got yourself a game that stands with the likes of Resident Evil. All that’s left to consider is a clunky control scheme, a lack of ammunition when you need it most, a cantankerous save system, and a clunky inventory, and you’ve got yourself a pure, 100% survival-horror game. Right?

Silent Hill 4: The Room falls into that sometimes-dangerous category of "high-concept." Unfailingly, when trying to bring up an example of its genius, I feel like I’m trying to convince someone who thinks that Meg Ryan’s romantic comedies are the pinnacle of modern cinema that they really should watch Pi. It’s hard, because the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

Fans of survival horror games will not be disappointed with Silent Hill 4: The Room. While the game still didn’t quite match up to Fatal Frame 2 (which still remains as THE game to beat in my mind at least), it is still a fun game.

WindowsUGO (UnderGroundOnline)
Ultimately, Silent Hill 4: The Room will make your nerves shake, your bone marrow quiver. Even if you're not out to get the game, it's bent on getting you. It knows where you work, so you can't run. It knows where you live, so you can't hide. So open up your room already and say, "Ahhhh!" Or would you rather they do it for you, sissy?

WindowsGamingTrend
Silent Hill 4: The Room is a departure for the series with a new first-person view to go along with the third-person view and the fact that it doesn’t happen in Silent Hill at all. A more centralized problem keeps this game grounded and not allow it to slip into the radical sort of ideas Silent Hill 2 had for instance. This game continues the horror that is Silent Hill and I am going to guess if they do another one it will be tied to the city once again.

A strong entry for horror game enthusiasts, I really did jump thanks to some creepy imagery and well places scares. Konami did a bang up job of making a scary game, with more then a little borrowed from several popular movies and books. The plot can only be described as "out there" for most people. Still, for real, genuine scares, this does not disappoint.

When it comes to delivering genuine scares and a masterful story--although an often confusing one at that-- Konami’s Silent Hill series will chill you to the bone. It will play with you psychologically until you can no longer distinguish what is real and what is a dream or a demented figment of the character’s imagination. It will make you believe that the character has discovered a place that might seem normal at one point and then, at a moment’s notice, become a demented alternate universe where light is swallowed by darkness and horrible things scramble across the streets. Horrible things like living mannequins or vicious mutated dogs that look as though their skin were turned inside out.

Silent Hill 4: The Room is one of those games that's become difficult to review. While all the classic touches that have become so familiar and so great in the series have returned, they have simultaneously become cliché. You expect to be scared, and you will be scared, but the freakishness, the undertones of distress and uncomfortable wreathing of characters that merge lamps and mannequins, replaced now by raging wheelchairs and insignificant ape-things, just don't scare or unnerve me like previous games in the series did. On the other hand, I still enjoyed it enough, despite its weaknesses.

I've just finished playing through the final release of Konami's new survival-horror title and boy am I glad it's over. That's not a slam against the game, but rather a comment to my broken spirit, bloodshot eyes, and heightened anxiety levels. Like all good horror games, Silent Hill 4: The Room does a brilliant job of making you feel bad about a number of things; your actions in the game, your relationships with key characters, and your eagerness to batter hellspawn to death using gold clubs.

As great as the Silent Hill series is, it's the kind of thing that works best in smaller doses, and Silent Hill 4: The Room coming out just one year after 3 led to suspicion that the game would either not be as interesting as previous installments, or that the creepy atmosphere of the game would lose its effectiveness through overexposure. The fears are partly true (which we'll get to eventually) but there's a surprising amount of new approaches and major revisions to the series here.

Horror games just don?t get much better than this?at least when you?re talking art direction, sound design, storyline, and all the aesthetic, literary stuff that goes into stimulating the part of the brain that releases piss into pants. Silent Hill 4: The Room continues that fine tradition of psycho sickness, but one annoying combat issue sticks out like a throbbing, scabrous, maggot-filled tumor.

Like it or not, the "survival-horror" genre has reached, and passed, its zenith some time ago. Say, three or four years ago. Potential players that might have stayed with the genre apparently were lost on Resident Evil: Code Veronica's controls, its evil twin story, or didn't care too much about the "huge" change from pre-rendered backgrounds to polygonal ones (though many hardcore fans did). And player and critic reactions to Silent Hill 2's claustrophobic fogginess and Silent Hill 3's quick action were all over the charts: Either you loved or hated them.

Silent Hill is a town where pure evil permeates the air and the soil and eventually consumes the people. It's a soothing vacation spot that masks demon-worshipping cults and dark purpose. Each of the previous titles in the Silent Hill series of horror games has either outright taken place in the titular small town or has gradually been pulled there through some terrible inertia. Silent Hill 4: The Room breaks this trend, because it takes place in the neighboring city of South Ashfield and centers mainly on an ill-fated apartment building, a cursed apartment, and the man who lives in it. That's not the only series tenet the game breaks. Silent Hill 4 pairs third-person and new first-person gameplay with an emphasis on combat and item management. The resultant hybrid has some flaws, but The Room retains the dark, disturbing soul that is the unsettling center of the Silent Hill experience.

All in all, I had a hell of a time playing Silent Hill 4: The Room and when I say, "hell of a time," I mean - "hell of a time." Despite some of its major flaws - the many-times mentioned control system, unnerving camera angle (which can be adjusted, but with poor result), the fairly idiotic combat system and the lack of more challenging puzzles - I still enjoyed the game for what it was, and that is a freaking scary horror adventure that questions the boundary between good and evil, sanity and sheer lunacy, with the main premise of "Don't trust anyone - especially not yourself." In all likelihood, The Room cannot compare to its predecessor - the first title in the series - but it surely can give us the good-old paranoid feeling of Silent Hill once again. There is no boredom in this game, only sheer horror. Bear that in mind, poor soul, when you grip that mouse firmly and start smashing your way through the game.

Silent Hill 4: The Room is an interesting sequel; it attempts to branch out in several areas of gameplay and setting, while remaining true to the psychological thriller style that's always set the Silent Hill series apart from more action-oriented scares. While not all of the changes made necessarily serve to enhance the series, the dark, gripping storytelling is what allows this game its Silent Hill credentials. If you're an existing horror fan or a Silent Hill fan, Silent Hill 4: The Room is certainly worth looking at. Just make sure you bring along your dual analog gamepad to ensure that all your terror is generated from the cursed setting--and not from the controls.

I was surprised how Silent Hill 4 has moved away from the "flashlight in the dark" approach. Most stages are well lit, and as a result the gameplay feels less edgy and more like Resident Evil. The graphics are top notch, with a stylish, washed-out look which reminded me of the movie Seven. The creature animation is uncanny, but for some reason your man walks like he has a huge pole up his butt! What's that all about? The sound effects are more understated than Silent Hill 3, but still effectively chilling. Silent Hill 4 isn't as terrifying as it could have been, but at least it takes the series in a new direction.

You wake up from a nightmare. The ceiling fan spins lazily over your bed; slowly, the world comes into focus. Confused at first, you gradually piece bits of it together. You've been trapped in your apartment for five days now. Through the sealed windows you can watch the distant street outside, commuters driving to work or descending into the subway. Occasionally, you glimpse your neighbors as they walk by their windows in the adjacent building. Despite the bleak vision, your apartment seems mostly normal. Dishes are piled by the sink, a kettle waits for you to make some coffee. The chairs look comfy enough and there's even a TV in the corner.

Silent Hill 4 is still a damned scary game, and it's one of the better survival horror titles out there because of that. It's good to see its designers taking risks and experimenting with the formula. This time, however, it's kind of a misfire. It's by no means a failure, but it's not a success, either.

I haven't quite made up my mind about Silent Hill 4: The Room yet. If you read my recent preview, I was enthusiastic as hell about it. The gameplay was updated, the game was genuinely scary, there were interesting puzzles to solve that were centered around the game's new dynamic, and it still felt like Silent Hill. There were only a few levels in the early build, but they were enough to get me really excited. The full version arrived a couple of days ago, and I tore into it. However, the more I played SH4, the more I came to feel as if something was missing.

Keine unmenschliche Gehirnakrobatik? Keine Taschenlampe?

Purists will be dismayed at some of the questionable decisions Konami has made in what ought to be one of the best games of the year, but it remains enjoyable enough in its own right to warrant keeping the faith for now. The inescapable truth for Konami is that it has not just failed to better itself, but has gone backwards to the extent that it's no longer our favourite horror series (Project Zero 2 claims that throne for now). Fortunately for the fans though, there's still nothing quite like it, and The Room warrants investigation for that reason alone.

Is Silent Hill 4 – The Room the saviour of the series? Unfortunately not. Yes the game has progressed and deviated away from its regular formula, at least in part. But not enough, in my opinion, to make it the fantastic game it has the potential to be. As with its previous titles the graphics are amazing, the content disturbing and the sound effects chilling and at times frightening but there is just something missing. For a game of this genre to raise itself above the rest it has to “up the ante” to give gamers the shock effect that will make the game sell. I feel Konami have settled for a “safe” production that will not shock or offend the public in general, they seem to have forgotten that the game was originally aimed at an adult market and with an 18 certificate the game's content should not have to be diluted so that “little Johnny” doesn’t poo his pants because “little Johnny” shouldn’t be bloody playing it in the first place!!

Silent Hill 4: The Room är absolut inget dåligt skräckspel.

Like all good horror games, Silent Hill 4: The Room does a brilliant job of making you feel bad about a number of things; your actions in the game, your relationships with key characters, and your eagerness to batter hellspawn to death using gold clubs. More on those beatings in a while. While the PC version has a few issues not apparent in the console titles, once you get over them this is still the same great game.

So I've wondered why I've hesitated to play this latest one. After finishing it this weekend, I discovered why. Despite another interesting story (this, of course, is debatable depending on what level of fan you are), and all of the key mark characteristics of the series, Silent Hill 4: The Room is neither brilliant nor terrible. Instead, it falls into that weird ether world of limbo, a game that's good in parts and weak in others, leaving you with a feeling of only mild satisfaction. It's like waking up with a great hunger to a plate of luke-warm eggs.

Silent Hill 4 has a good story, great graphics, and decent gameplay. However, it really doesn't offer anything new or different from that which we've seen in the previous three series installments - it's more of the same, and the PC version offers nothing extra to PC gamers. There are no added scenes, no improved graphics, and no nothing. I can only recommend this game to fans of the series that don't already own a console they can play it on. Ultimately, if you enjoy the series you are going to love this game. If you are getting into the survival horror genre, then Silent Hill 4 is as good a place as any to begin your experience. But, if you are looking to partake in a definitive step forward for the survival horror genre…I'm afraid that Silent Hill 4 does not take it.

Tinkering with a well loved formula is a tricky business. Ever tucked into a 'New and Improved!!' chocolate bar and longed for the familiar taste that you've loved for years? You might still like it, and you might even still buy it, but you can't for the life of you work out why the manufacturer would break something that didn't need fixing in the first place. That's essentially the problem with Silent Hill: The Room; Konami felt that what we really needed was a more action oriented, less puzzle driven survival horror adventure. The trouble with that approach is that upping the combat while taking away the puzzling turns it into a completely different game that - while on the surface - still looks like a Silent Hill game radically shifts the emphasis in the largely undesirable direction of awkward hackandslash.

WindowsComputer Gaming World (CGW)
Despite this magnificent hook and some truly frightening moments, The Room tragically displays all the sloppiness of a quick-and-dirty console port. Since the game essentially uses the same graphics as its PlayStation 2 counterpart (except at higher resolutions on the PC). the textures tack clarity, while the overall environmental detail is kept to a crude minimum. Even worse is the games one-two punch of awkward controls and a useless camera system, which creates additional, albeit unintended, tension and horror as you helplessly try to keep Silent Hill's undead bestiary at bay.

Overall, disappointment is the word that best describes Silent Hill 4. Not that the game itself is bad. But it carries a heavy tradition and does not deliver. It is a mediocre game that would have probably gone unnoticed under a different title. And the fact that the town of Silent Hill doesn’t even appear, makes me wonder if the only reason the Silent Hill title was used was to appeal to the mainstream who are now familiar with the name. The focus on action part makes it hard to recommend it to adventure gamers, who will derive a lot more satisfaction from the previous games of the series, especially the customizable SH2 and SH3.

Short games aren't inherently bad, and neither are retreads. But I think it's safe to say that when a game is both a retread and short, there's definitely something wrong with it. Silent Hill 4 is such a game. It banks so confidently on the player getting sucked into its story that it permits it to preclude even the most base of game design laws, which state simply that repetition hampers one's enjoyment of a game. It inundates the player with piddling gameplay devices incomprehensible to even the most seasoned door-checking, elevator-riding Silent Hill stiffs. And worst of all, it's only as original as the sum of its parts -- a collection of fleeting bites off of past horror and suspense flicks, which under no circumstances should ever, ever come before wholesome, enjoyable gameplay.
