But fans of the series will find Silent Hill: The Escape to be a superb addition to the celebrated canon, and revel in all the tension and fear that made Silent Hill so popular in the first place. This is a great compliment to the graphical adventure of Silent Hill 2 Mobile, and will hopefully become the foundations for a whole new iPhone series.

As time went on, Silent Hill’s development was moved to America, where horror was more slasher and gore rather than psychological and haunting. To paraphrase a reviewer, “American developers just don’t get what made Silent Hill scary.” If the controls were better or had alternatives, if the enemies were intelligent, if there were less featureless hallways, and if there were a story right from the tutorial levels, I might have been more into the game. The enemies are just references to better games, the atmosphere, though sometimes extremely tense and scary, were overshadowed by the negatives. Team Silent isn’t in charge of the Silent Hill series anymore; maybe it’s a sign to move on.

Silent Hill: The Escape is hardly worth its initial $7.99 asking price. The game is slow and frustrating, which works against its otherwise effective atmosphere. This could have been a scary game had there been some actual horror. Instead, you're left just wandering the halls and tilting your device around to shoot some monsters. Boring.

Unfortunately, the action is so lethargic that none of it really packs a fright. We kept hoping for a puzzle or a challenging fight to break up the monotony, but it never happened. In our opinion, this isn't a very good use of $7.99.
