The game looks (and somewhat plays) alot like Final Fantasy VII. The backgrounds look real and are textured beautifully. All of the graphics are extraordinary, except for the actual characters. We get to play with the blocky, non-detailed, short, stubby, cartoon looking characters. You know, the no fingers, block-for-a-hand type people. Which, as it turns out, really isn't that bad, because most of the game (and all of the combat) is played from an expanded view, so detail isn't that important. Also, the speech is kinda corny, but I guess it fits with the action. Overall, I would say that the graphics were good, if you don't mind the 'FF 7'

It is becoming increasingly rare to see something in a game that hasn't been done before. Sure, there are some new graphic effects every six months but as far as gameplay goes, things are becoming a bit stale. It seems as if everything that can be done, has been done. Silver is something new, not revolutionary but new. Silver combines RPG with elements from both the action and adventure genres. The outcome is quite pleasing.

So we have a game before us that has a lot going for it -- excellent visuals, superb audio, and an engrossing storyline. We have three attributes that usually make a great game, but we have a game that tries to be three different games as well. It has the adventure and limited role-playing aspects down okay; it's the excruciating combat sequences that often killed my mood. The wacky character control, the real-time strategy feel (confusing in a game of this type), and the almost arcade-reflex skills needed to progress through the story contributed to my disappointment. Additionally, since the amount of time spent in combat is so large compared to "adventuring," this shortcoming becomes frustrating. If only they had included the option of turn-based combat (ala Final Fantasy), I would have heralded this as one of the better plays of the year. . . but alas, my search goes on.

Overall, this is a fun, high-quality game. If you're entranced by wonderful sound, graphics, and interface, you can probably overlook the handful of flaws in Silver and give it a shot.

I had mixed feelings about this game. It’s almost a great game, but falls short in a couple of places -- particularly how the characters get way too small when they move further away from the screen. The storyline is so-so, nothing real new or exciting here. Most of the control is very responsive and several levels of complication may make this game more appealing to all levels of RPG players. The graphics look great and are definitely a plus. I felt this game has some interesting innovations such as being able to see all the interactive items in an area. I would recommend Silver to everyone who enjoys playing a good RPG but likely no one else, as there are a lot of times when dialog reigns over actual gameplay. I’m sure many RPG players will be able to see past what I consider shortcomings, however I still did have some minor troubles which is why I give this game a score of 82.

For some strange reason, many people have compared Silver to Final Fantasy VII. In this case, that's a bit like comparing a Ford Mustang and a Chevy Impala - they both have wheels and an engine, but that's where the similarities end. The only similarity between the two games is the general Japanese-y look and feel of the graphics - 3D characters with big heads, small bodies, and huge swords against 2D pre-rendered backgrounds.

WindowsGamer's Pulse
Silver is nothing revolutionary in either the RPG, adventure, or action genre. While it does a nice job of blending a bit of all three genres, it does it in such a general way that all are a bit too simplistic. Its major technical failings will likely be a strong deterrent for many gamers who are either looking for a good challenge, or get tired of having the game crash every time they do a certain task, which won't likely be solved until a patch is released. With talks of a sequel already being rumored, one can only hope that the people at Infogrames will give Silver 2 a serious graphical enhancement, and spend a little extra time in the game testing labs to assure that it isn't plagued by so many serious crashes. All in all, Silver is not much to rave about, but for those looking for a diversion until Crusaders of Might and Magic or Gabriel Knight 3, this may appease you for a short period of time.

Silver is simplified by the removal or retooling of much of the complex stat-based baggage of its console RPG brethren.

DreamcastRPGFan
Although Silver is likely the best US-released RPG on the Dreamcast so far, it doesn't compare to any of the better Playstation or Saturn RPGs. Unless the Dreamcast is the only system you own and you really can't wait for Grandia II or Shen Mue, this one isn't highly recommended. Silver's overall feel is quite similar to Shadow Madness, though, so those who enjoyed Crave's first RPG might want to check this one out.

WindowsPC Player (Germany)

After playing this game I was surprised I’d found such a high quality game being discarded in a bargain bin. Oh well, it is the way of the world; one man’s treasure, is another man’s trash. Though, who could consider it trash I’ll never know.

WindowsComputer Gaming World (CGW)
SILVER is an RPG simplified by the removal of much of the complex stat-based baggage of its brethren. It’s a good idea that almost works. Infogrames has come close to successfully creating a new sub-genre — one based on fun fast-action battles mixed with rich story. It’s fun enough while the story remains compelling, and even if you find yourself unmotivated to complete the entire quest, you’ll at least enjoy the ride to the halfway point.

Seriøse mangler i gameplayet ødelægger desværre helhedsindtrykket.

Silver is a high fantasy top down adventure game. It involves one main character "David" whose quest is to save the women of the towns of this fantasy world from the evil Silver. Silver, a sinister sorcerer has captured all the women to sacrifice them to the demi-god Apocalypse. In return he will receive ultimate power over the universe. David proceeds to collect 8 mystical orbs to defeat Silver by recruiting allies and learning new attacks.

Silver's a good game, especially for beginners. Those who want freedom and millions of stats are going to be thoroughly disappointed, but for the casual gamer who might need an introduction to RPGs, this is pretty much the game.

DreamcastThe Next Level
For all the things Silver does right, there's always something it does poorly. From the great soundtrack, to the flawed menu system - From the astounding visuals, to the repetitive gameplay, Silver is often a hit and miss title, but luckily for us, it does more of the former than of the latter.

It never fails - some dictator gnarled with pure evil kills his wife and then decides that he needs a young and nubile woman from the community he rules over to bear him a new son. So what does he do? He rounds up every woman, both single and married, from the kingdom and has them locked up so that he can look them over at his leisure and choose one. Naturally, the one he chooses will likely be yours, if you're a young, hot-headed, virile male hero named David in a role-playing game called Silver.

DreamcastHappyPuppy
While not without its flaws, Silver is a worthy addition to the Dreamcast's RPG lineup. It's a solid adventure for mainstream gamers looking to dive into the genre. With innovative features and plenty of action, Silver offers a unique, though bare-bones RPG experience.

WindowsG4 TV: The Electric Playground
Let’s not beat around the proverbial bush, here. The moment you lay your eyes on Silver, an action/RPG from the Infogrames design team in the U.K., you’ll immediately recognize strong similarities to Squaresoft’s Final Fantasy VII: an epic story with plenty of dialogue, anime-like characters with weapons way too big for their bodies and a party-based combat system. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as there hasn’t been a good console-esque RPG for the PC in a while, but the game falls short in a few critical areas that tend to add up in the end.

DreamcastPlanet Dreamcast
Silver tells a wonderful story with striking graphics and sound. It also boasts an innovative and enjoyable combat system. However, the completely linear structure, frequent loading pauses, and absentee AI prevented it from engaging me. As much as I want to like this beautiful game, I can't help but file it under "could've been."

DreamcastGameSpot
As a game, Silver is well-intentioned but flawed. It draws on a variety of console role-playing's staple elements, but never to truly great effect.
56
DreamcastGameSpot UK
A few flaws in a game can be forgiven if the overall experience is good enough. In Silver, there are too many gameplay flaws and the experience just doesn't make it worthwhile persevering to get deeper into a story that isn't compelling or interesting. With a weak combat system, a lack of interaction with the environments and the seemingly never-ending bouts of conversation which manage to destroy the flow of the game, Silver is not going to be able to offer enough to quench the thirst of RPG-playing DC owners. There may be no Final Fantasy on the way, but that is no reason to encourage weak conversion of weak games by going out and buying this.

WindowsAdrenaline Vault, The (AVault)
As mankind emerges into the new millennium, unnecessary complexity and superficial detail seem to be the order of the day. We surround ourselves with electronic devices that we don't need, luxuries that we can't afford, and responsibilities that we don't want. As computer gaming traditionally evolves alongside the society that feeds it, it too has taken to be filled with heightened complexity. While this occasionally nurtures the industry and helps it to grow as a whole, it also has been used by the less ambitious to satisfy deadlines or to ride the coattails of a burgeoning niche. With this in mind, it is satisfying to find a title such as Silver that professes to carry itself with alternating detail and simplicity.

WindowsJust Adventure
Probably the worst aspect of the entire game, though, is that all of the characters always appear to be tiny, almost as if you are watching someone else play the game from afar. Even during cut scenes and battles, the characters remain small and faceless, and any potential drama is rendered ineffective by the inability to inject any personality unto these characters. Compounding the tedium is a forced linearity that leads you through the game by your nose and an unmemorable musical score. Not having played Silver on the PC, I am dumfounded by the excellent reviews I had read about this RPG/adventure. Needless to say, not all games survive the transition to another platform.
