SimLife

Det här är ett på alla vis imponerande spel. Ävem om man kan känna sig överväldigad vid en första anblick, hjälper den förträffliga manualen en att komma igång. För det finns mycket att leka med, och det är roligt att göra det.

You'd be forgiven for thinking that Maxis' latest simulation extravaganza, Sim Life, looks almost exactly the same as Sim Earth. No-one could blame you either if, once you've caught a glimpse of the manual, you find yourself under the impression that it's even harder to get to grips with than its predecessor – if such a thing can be imagined. You would, however, be wrong on both counts.

Basically, it is an incredibly deep, extremely complex affair which, after a little perseverance, is actually rather satisfying to play.

Although Sim Life is initially confusing, once you get the hang of the complex control system, it's fascinating to see how the ecosystems develop, and how the smallest change can have a powerful effect. Each game takes a long time to develop, so if you're not prepared to invest a significant amount of time in playing a game, this is one to avoid!

If you have had experience in other Maxis games, you will find the interface and attention to detail a bit more pleasing, but the sheer amount of tools and buttons available may lead many people to grow frustrated and bored. In summary, this is a game for purist simulation lovers, and those with a history of playing intricate management games.

SimLife really is a 'game' that you'll either love or hate. It's deep and worthy but perhaps a little dull for some tastes and definitely not for the intellectually challenged or limited of patience.

Wer immer noch meint, der 1200er sei nicht groß in Kommen, der lasse sich mal folgendes auf der Zunge zergehen: Die PC-Konvertierung von Maxis’ Evo-SIMulation erscheint zuerst nur für den Turbomiga! Allzu lange werden jedoch auch die Freunde älterer “Freundinnen” nicht mehr darben müßen, soll die 500er-Variante doch gleichfalls dieser Tage auftauchen (einer Kurztest mit den Unterschieden findet Ihr daher wenn nicht in diesem, dann im nächsten Heft). Was nun vorliegende Spezialversion angeht, so kommt nur in ihren Genuß, wer zuvor einen kleinen Intelligenztest in Form der exotischen Installroutine meistert. Danach darf man je nach Hardware an das normal- oder hochaufgelöste Erschaffen von Bäumen und Bienen gehen – wobei wir den Hobby-Göttern freilich einen Multisync-Monitor und mehr als zwei Megabyte RAM dringendst an schöpferische Herz legen würden...

Bei aller Freundschaft, liebe Leute von Maxis, mit SimLife hört der Spaß auf. SimCity ist toll, SimAnt ganz nett, SimEarth galt bisher als Ausrutscher, aber mit SimLife seid ihr auf dem Holzweg. Schlecht ist das Produkt nicht; Hut ab vor der programmiertechnischen Leistung und der Recherche, die in diesem Programm steckt. Aber mit einem Spiel hat das Ganze nun überhaupt nichts mehr zu tun.

SimLife is a nifty little number that lets you genetically engineer new forms of life and watch them evolve (or, as most of mine did, die off).

Sim Life is overly complicated, tedious and can't seem to make its mind up what it is trying to be. it's a jack of all trades, and a master of one - being boring.
