The Simpsons: Tapped Out is a pretty standard social game, with two big differences: it’s incredibly polished, and it knows its audience inside-out. It’s a must-play for fans of the show, past and present. Its charm and style will embiggen your heart and soul.

It may not have the depth of Sim City or the dedicated following of FarmVille but Tapped Out is still a thoroughly entertaining and addictive experience; arguably the best videogame based on The Simpsons yet.

On that note, The Simpsons: Tapped Out does nothing new when it comes to freemium gaming, but the opportunity to create one's personal Springfield, along with trademark Simpsons humor, makes it hard to resist. It's less "doh", and more "woo hoo."

Aside from its lack of any real innovation, the only nagging problem with The Simpsons: Tapped Out is its insistence that you connect to EA’s Origin service, even if it’s only used for online features such as visiting your friends’ parallel Springfields for daily bonuses. It’s spotty at best, and there was a long stretch during the review process when we couldn’t connect at all. If you can suffer through that, though, you’ll find a Simpsons experience that knows its audience well, and one that thus manages to nudge its way into the list of the best games of this sort to date. It doesn’t go out of it ways to innovate, true, but if Homer Simpson taught us anything, it’s that you can dish out minimal effort and still be a star.

That said, there are people who will enjoy this game immensely. Simpsons fans will get a kick out of seeing their favourite four finger family on their little screen. Social networking fans can add all their friends, speeding up the building of their town, something fun to do at school (or at work!). For me, it wasn’t my cup of tea, having been addicted to Castleville and similar games, I just found it a little thin on interaction. Despite this being a freemium game, there is no doubt that the IAP will be extremely popular for EA and hopefully, this means more Simpsons franchise games on the horizon.

Trading on its licence and some scraps of humour from the Simpsons table, The Simpsons: Tapped Out is a bog-standard city sim with little to recommend it once you get past the Groening gloss

The Simpsons has everything you need for an excellent free-to-play game, including universal appeal, a wealth of material, and excellent little sound bytes like "D'oh" and Krusty's iconic laugh. It's just a shame that Electronics Arts has to choke the life out of that wonder with their oppressive Origin service. When Bart plugs that server back in, I'm going to have a lot of fun, but I'm wondering exactly how long it'll be until that payoff.

Of course, everything you do can be sped up by the “special currency” du jour, donuts. And wouldn’t you know it, EA is more than happy to sell you all the donuts you want for a stack of real money. I understand that microtransactions are the new norm in mobile gaming, and when done right I even support them, but in this case it seems like a false choice, either you buy more donuts or you do absolutely nothing for vast quantities of time. This game is a slap in the face to Simpson fans everywhere, and doesn’t deserve in the smallest amount of support.
