Skull & Crossbones is the definitive pirate arcade game. It may have a few flaws in the animation department, but you will find yourself strangely fulfilled once you have hacked the enemy pirates, swung on the ropes, dug up the treasure, and defeated the evil wizard. If you are like me, you'll find yourself playing this game over and over again just for the unique experience of being a pirate! Ahoy!

In all honesty Skull and Crossbones adds little to the beat-'em-up genre other than a novel theme, but it's well executed with lots of colour and humour. Definitely worth a look if swashbuckling swordplay, glittering treasure and sultry maidens are your thing.

The two-player option is a bonus: it not only makes life a bit easier (particularly if you're playing with an expert), but it's also a lot more fun, since you've got the added element of fighting over who gets the extra energy and money. It's not the greatest or most polished beat 'em up in existence, but it's a good enough game to keep you entertained for a while, particularly when the blood begins to fly...

If beat 'em up games turn you on, you'll probably enjoy this challenge, otherwise try it before you buy.

If a masterful brawler is yer heart’s desire then ye’d best be plottin’ a course for fairer waters, but all ye real lads and lasses o’ the sea grab a mate, put three sheets to the wind, and give a manly cheer for PIRACY!

The graphics are childish - simple line drawings with no character - and the animation is slow and jerky. The fights are limited because you only have extremely basic moves with which to attack and defend. There's just nothing here to make you want to play on. Don't waste your money on this. If you really want to play pirates, get one of those plastic eyepatches you find in Christmas crackers - they're better value.

The totally abysmal STUN Runner conversions blotted Domark's/Tengen copybook, and this one doesn't clear up the mess - poorly animated sprites, awful sound, and little or no gameplay whatsoever. Leave it alone, unless you're mad.

The Amiga conversion of Atari's buccaneering coin-op is no better than the ST one. But then the arcade game was no classic so this further demonstrates that you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. Pirate-lovers may see the attraction, but others would probably prefer to feed it to the sharks.

Ha-harrrr me laddie! Shiver me timbers, etc etc. If you didn't get the idea from that unoriginal and lacking intro, Skull and Crossbones is a scrolling beat 'em up based around pirates. The coin-op, like this conversion, borders on the average, so if I was you, I'd save the eleven quid for something better. Let's hope that future conversions are far superior.

Amstrad CPCComputer and Video Games (CVG)
We've seen the game on other formats and we were exceptionally underwhelmed. Now the Amstrad version has arrived and it's just as hopelessly average as the other formats. Based on the flop coin-op, it's your job to amass treasure and beat up some nasty pirates. The coin-op was severely lacking in the gameplay stakes and in that respect, the Amstrad is a perfect copy.

Commodore 64Commodore Format
The game is fairly playable but too simplistic; it's simply not sophisticated enough for your average games player. Given the choice between playing this for long periods of time and walking the plank into shark infested waters it would have to be 'Hello Mr and Mrs Hammerhead'.

Unresponsive controls and generally slow sprite movement round off a very disappointing arcade conversion.

Third rate for a C64 game. It must take really clever programmers to make something from a coin-op move this slow. It's a real shame too, as pirates surely make an excellent subject for a scrolling hack-'em-up.

Grab a copy of Skull and Crossbones and get bored senseless. Never had the acquisition of pieces of eight been so laboured and tiresome.

Bleeurgh! I thought the 16 bit versions were bad enough, until I saw this! Blocky sprites wobble and jerk their way through numerous dull backdrops, and the sound is enough to have you reaching for the knob in seconds. A complete travesty, and a game that would have Errol Flynn turning in his grave. Avoid!

To be quite honest this is undeniably the worst game I have seen which has been specifically written for a fully equipped PC.
