The Video Game Critic
The SNES was not known for its sports games, but NHL 94 is a winner. EA's NHL 94 was arguably the best title in a long series of hockey games that continue to this very day. How does this compare with the classic Genesis version? Well, it may not be quite as fun, but it's very close! The gameplay is a bit slower and not quite as smooth, but the graphics and sound are much better. The players and referees look incredibly sharp and detailed, and the digitized sounds are crisp and clear. The tunes are also a big improvement over the cheesy Genesis music. With the possible exception of NBA Jam, NHL 94 is probably the best sports game you can get for the SNES.
Overall, the SNES upgrades does an outstanding job on improving graphics, sound and gameplay. However, compared to the Genesis version, the SNES cart is just a bit off its game, but don't let that stop you from hitting the ice.
The DOS Spirit
I cannot praise this game enough. I feel somewhat saddened by giving it anything less than an 11/10, but no game is perfect. If stellar graphics are a requirement by you in order to enjoy a game, than NHL '94 is not the cup of tea you wish to drink from. The graphics by no means suck, but by no means are even decent by today's standards. But, graphics don't make the game. Entertainment does. How well you enjoy yourself does. Fun does. NHL '94 contains an abundance of all three of these categories, and is, by my definition, a superb game. If you happen to own a Super Nintendo Entertainment System, then do yourself a favor and obtain this game.
