For more than a year now, SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs has been touted as one of the premiere PlayStation 2 titles. With stellar online multiplayer features, SOCOM looked to be the #1 reason to own a Network Adaptor. Now the wait is finally over and SOCOM is here and ready to be enjoyed. Is it everything I hoped it be? Yes it is -- and a whole lot more.

All in all, I can't be more satisfied with SOCOM. It's challenging, addictive, and most importantly fun. The controls are straightforward and take no time to get adjusted to. The game has been one of my most anticipated titles since I first saw it last year, and I'm glad to see that it has lived up to expectations. Broadband users should definitely pick up SOCOM as its support for 16 player matches - 8 Navy Seals vs. 8 Terrorists - adds a whole lot to the replay value. The bundled Logitech headset works like a dream, and is worth the extra $10. The game plays like a dream. It's almost like a hybrid of Metal Gear Solid, Syphon Filter, and Rainbow Six. And honestly, what more does can action fan ask for? Visually, the game looks, moves, and plays perfectly fine. It may not win any awards, but it sure does get the job done. Final word: SOCOM is an exceptional title that action fans should keep their eyes open for.

Whether you own a network adaptor or not, SOCOM is worth the budget price that it is now available for. SOCOM's massive environments, stretching from Alaska, to an oil rig, to Thailand, are all expansive, well detailed, and full of deadly enemies. SOCOM is by far the best military shooter currently available on the market, excluding its sequel.

While PC gamers have been enjoying online multiplayer shooters like Counter-Strike for years, SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs will be the very first such online gaming experience for a great number of PlayStation 2 owners. Sony and SOCOM's developer, Zipper Interactive, obviously knew this would be the case, and in SOCOM, they have constructed an online game that is surprisingly deep but extremely easy to get into, making it an excellent game regardless of whether you've played other multiplayer shooters before.

SOCOM: US Navy Seals is a well-engineered game of team-based tactical action. It’s also a great title to play online, provided you can find some like-minded participants who want to play correctly. It’s not a standard first-person shooter, and it can’t be played as one; trying to do so will lead to failure and frustration. SOCOM is a game of patience, planning and wits. This goes double for the multiplayer action, wherein your opposition is human, and one shot can put you down for good. With so many shooters out there catering to mindless action, SOCOM is definitely a welcome change, as long as you’re looking for that change. If you’ve always wanted a console-friendly taste of what it’s like to be a Navy Seal, then your game has finally arrived.

Overall, this is a good game, but there is a possibility that it could be better. My suspicion is that the developers know this, and SOCOM 2 is already slated for November 2003 (original was released in June 2003). It seems that as well fixing the bits that were not so graphically refined in the first game, they are adding and improving, and looking to give the gamers what they want - more urban areas, improving the AI, and the most important - they're adding more guns. Obviously, the global experiment to see it SOCOM would fly as a single player and online game has worked, and Sony are willing to pour more money into it. Gawd bless 'em. With the imminent release of SOCOM 2, make the tough decision, either hold fire and get the new version, or second hand original ... or jump right in? My advice is go for it now.

Though the single-player mode is exciting, SOCOM’s online multiplayer option is the core of this game. You can create your own SEAL clan and compete with anyone else across the country while speaking to them freely via the headset. The reality of unconventional warfare is just a button press away. Ingenious gameplay based on real-life tactics of America’s elite armed forces deserves to be played more than once.

SOCOM is a first/third-person tactical action game that puts you in the wet, well-worn shoes of a US Navy Seal. Through a nicely orchestrated single-player campaign, it's your duty to coordinate missions by leading two teams of seals into dangerous scenarios.

IGN
SOCOM: US Navy SEALs should stand as a sort of object lesson for ambitious developers. Before you get started on the little things, it's wise to make sure the big ones are in order. SOCOM is filled with all kinds of brilliant attention to detail in its presentation, animation, level design, and many other areas, but those don't serve to fill the holes in its artificial intelligence and basic controls. The AI hurts the single-player game, while the control causes problems with the multiplayer game, and as a consequence, neither is as good as it could have been.

Sure, the PC has several titles that could humble this game, but short of shelling out for a gaming standard PC, this is as close to becoming a special forces operative as many of us will get. Kind of.

In both 2001 and 2002, SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs was one of the highlighted games at Sony’s E3 press conferences, chosen to show off the capabilities of the Network Adaptor—and both times, SOCOM got a tepid reaction from the audience. In particular, 2002’s SOCOM demo was obliterated by the Madden NFL 2003 demo, which featured the Boom!-Meister himself commenting over a cross-country online game between NFL superstars Daunte Culpepper and Jevon Kearse.

Shooting people has always been at the heart of online gaming, so it's no surprise that the third person tactical shooter SOCOM: US Navy SEALs is currently throbbing away inside our PS2s with their newly strapped-on network hardware. And rather like the best Xbox Live offerings, Zipper Interactive delivers a pretty vast single player distraction to boot - a 12-mission, team-based campaign built around a Rainbow Six style dynamic. But with a £50 price tag for the game and a bit of multiplayer-oriented headwear, SOCOM still has a heck of a lot to prove.

The missions can be confusing, and despite a labeled map it's often hard to determine where to go or what to do. SOCOM is for strategic minded gamers only. It requires a sizeable time investment, but there is a real sense of accomplishment when you complete a mission. SOCOM is probably better known for its online mode, but I don't like to play online, so I haven't tried it.
