Sol Divide tricks you into believing this is yet another Psikyo shmup, but it turns out to be something refreshingly different. The developer took this one in a unique direction that makes it stand out from the rest of its library, so you'll either love it or hate it, just like fans when it was originally released. It certainly isn’t the very best offering from the company, but it still manages to do what it does with the usual Psikyo flair. At the end of the day, why wouldn’t you want to have another digital arcade option on your Switch where you get to fight a giant two-headed snake while a Star Wars-style Sandcrawler stands tall on the background? If you want a unique offering from a revered Japanese developer, look no further.

Graphically, Sol Divide is stunning. The magnificent fantasy backgrounds are a sight to behold, some looking nearly photographic. Digitized bosses like dragons, golems, and minotaurs appear to have been animated using stop-motion techniques like those used in films like Clash of the Titans. Sol Divide could have been a surprise hit if it played like a conventional shooter. As it is, it looks better than it plays. Other drawbacks include lack of memory card support, and the fact that you don't even get a score! Even so, the extraordinary visuals kept me wanting to see what the next stage had in store.

I'm glad that so many classic Psikyo games are being re-released. However, Sol Divide: Sword of Darkness is one that only completionists should purchase because it's one of the most disappointing shmups that I've ever played.
