Sega's iconic platform hero dons those natty red boots once more and brings a welcome dose of team-based shenanigans to PS2

The perennially perky blue hedgehog brings his finger-waving antics onto the PS2, along with an entourage that'd put JLo to shame. Joined by long-standing friends such as Tails, Knuckles and Amy, as well as some of the spiky ones' adversaries over the years, Sonic and his pals combine their individual skills to create the ultimate furry fighting force.

Battling evil through the medium of spinning, flying and sheer strength, you'll put together a crack team of woodland creatures, hell-bent on wreaking havoc. In search of the usual Chaos crystals, you'll play as Team Sonic, Team Dark, Team Rose or Team Chaotix, all of which have their own individual strengths and weaknesses. The all-new configuration feature means that you can employ different characters for certain areas and challenges, and either spin, jump or fly across a range of obstacles in brightly coloured environments. Each team has their own storyline and specific side-quests too, with individual outcomes depending on which path you choose to take. There's the option to put your team-building skills to the test against a friend in the two-player challenges as well, and unlock additional modes and races as you go along.

    • Play as one of four teams, with 12 different characters to get to grips with, including Sonic, Tails and Knuckles

    • Experiment with multiple paths and experience different story outcomes depending on where you choose to go

    • Learn your team's individual strengths and discover the best ways to negotiate environments, solve puzzles and defeat enemies

www.nintendo.com – GameCube:

    Three's company

The developers at Sonic Team hope that lightning strikes thrice in their latest 3D adventure, Sonic Heroes for the Nintendo GameCube.

Sonic Heroes harkens back to the fundamentals that made Sega so successful--tightly-designed levels and high-speed thrills. Sonic mainstays such as loops, jump pads, speed boosts and spin jumps make a welcome return, along with a new three-character team system that allows you to switch heroes on the fly. With four different teams to choose from, you're sure to find a side that suits you best.

    Features

    • Each of the four playable teams features a fresh storyline.
    • Sleek graphics and sizzlin' framerates combine to create stunning visuals.
    • It's the first new Sonic game on the Nintendo GameCube.
    • Round up your friends and blaze through 8 multiplayer modes.

The four different teams--Team Sonic, Team Chaotix, Team Dark, and Team Rose--offer four unique styles of play. For the first time in the series, players can freely switch among Sonic, Tails and Knuckles. No matter which character you currently control, the other two remain at your side, ready to jump in whenever the situation calls for it.

Each character has unique abilities that help the team get past certain obstacles. Tails can spin his two tails like a propeller and can fly short distances, while Knuckles puts the heroes in a power formation and smashes through blocks and baddies. To reach the goal of an enemy-infested stage, you'll have to think strategically and utilize each character's abilities.

    Bottom Line

Thanks to a magnificent Sonic exclusive on the GCN, 2003 may become the year of the hedgehog. The snap-neck speed of Sonic Heroes may make it unsuited for those prone to motion sickness, but ravenous Sonic fans will delight in its old-school elegance.

Atari Australia Press Quotes - GameCube:
"Sega has for the most part gone back to the roots of the franchise, taken a good look at what made the original games fun and applied the same formula to a 3D game. Some of the stages in Heroes are downright amazing. They're so fast, so unpredictable, so completely chaotic, that I can only compare them to a rollercoaster thrill-ride. And it's during these levels where the teams are zooming along and tearing through corkscrews that Heroes is everything Sonic fans could hope for. 8/10" - IGN.com

"In many ways, Sonic Heroes is the way the series originally should have made the 3D transition. The two-player game can be fun, with special (unlockable) areas to run through in split-screen mode." - Gamespy

" Vibrant, energetic environments have long been a staple of the Sonic series, and Heroes uses the GameCube’s graphical strengths to its absolute advantage to produce some magnificently detailed, colorful textures. Everything from the picturesque nature of the rail canyon to the shimmering blue water at Seaside Hill and the lush greenery in the Lost Jungle is picture perfect. " - Avault.com
