Sonic R

Simply put, Sonic R is one of the most visually impressive Saturn titles to date. Not to mention that it's an enjoyable racing game in its own right.

Overall, Sonic R is an outstanding achievement. The graphics push the Saturn to it’s limits and it never stumbles. The sound is great, even if you don’t like the cheesy music. The game play has the perfect mix of racing and exploring that really captures what it means to be a Sonic game. The only flaw in the Sonic R is the controls. Once you get past that, you are in for a treat. Sonic R is a must own!

The very first thing that someone will notice when they boot up Sonic R is how incredible the graphics are. The impressive "Sonic World" portion of Sonic Jam was thought to be a preview of the upcoming 3D Sonic Project. The truth is, that the graphics in Sonic R blow those in Sonic World away. In fact, I have not seen more impressive 3D on any Saturn game period. The textures look great, the frame work is amazing, and the pop-up has been extremely well masked by a "fading in" technique that works extremely well.

Im Rennen selbst hat man völlige Bewegungsfreiheit, einfach fantastisch! Die Grafik ist für Saturn Verhältnisse sehr gut!!! Da man nicht an einen festen Kurs gebunden ist, findet man auch schnell einige Abkürzungen/Umwege. Zum Rennen dudelt eine wunderbare Musik die den ganzen Spaß noch abrundet.

Sonic R is only the third appearance of Sonic on the Saturn, and is, in my opinion, the best of the three. Traveller's Tales, who also did Sonic 3D Blast, have created an enjoyable, though short-lived racing game.

When all is said and done Sonic R an enjoyable but short racing game. Except for the secret routes you can enter once you have enough rings and the 4 challenges to unlock the secret characters I leave this game! wanting more interactivity and more levels. If Sega is ever to have a sequel to this game these two issues must be addressed.

Alright, if you’ve ever heard of Sonic R, you’re no doubt looking at my rating of 80% and thinking I’m out of my freaking mind. When I received it, people smiled and laughed, and told me that it was the worst game ever made.

Sigue manteniendo el mismo estilo que en anteriores versiones, pero mejorando su concepto. Muy divertido y muy sencillo, sin más pretensiones. Quizás está demasiado limitado en cuanto a las opciones que ofrece.

"Sonic R" fue un juego con una calidad elevada, pero que desgraciadamente pasó algo desapercibido debido a la mala racha que había tenido Sega en los últimos años y al abandono de muchos de sus usuarios. Con el paso de los años, el juego fue conversionado a PC, y ahora acaba de aparecer en el recopilatorio “Sonic Gems Collection”. A pesar de sus fallos, es un buen juego que merece la pena ser jugado por cualquier fan de la mascota de Sega.

The phrase "ages 9 and up" comes into my head when thinking of SonicR. The graphics point to that age group as does the gameplay. At times the game presents hard to execute turns on the race track but other than that the difficulty is not very high. However, for some odd reason I enjoy and I guess I do fall in the "and up" category. SonicR is one of those games that you would just like to have around after your sick and tired of running pedestrians over (Carmageddon 2) or fed up with shooting monsters in the head (any one of a number of first person shooters).

SONIC R allie une bonne jouabilité avec une réalisation de qualité. On aurait bien aimé avoir plus de circuits. On note au passage quelques erreurs dans les traductions en français dans le logiciel ainsi que sur la notice.

Sonic R ist kurzweiliger Rennspaß, der Freunde des Knuddel-Igels schnell in seinen Bann zieht. Lange Winterabende verbringen Sie allerdings besser mit einer echten Rennsimulation.

In the end it seems Sonic R is a neat racing game, and a great 3D start for Sonic. Be warned, it is a racing game and not a real Sonic game. It has no story, but it does keep up with the Sonic traditions. Like I said, there are no battles with Dr. Robotnik or any of his little minions. All you do is run. Sonic R is a good game, but it is very short, and you'll probably beat it your first day, like all too many Saturn games.

Sonic R. is een typisch arcade-race spel zonder al die intelligente poespas. Het is absoluut geen hoogvlieger op welk vlak dan ook... maar het straalt een soort van nostalgisch sfeertje uit dat je keer op keer weer laat verder spelen.

Selbst wenn ich meine Kollegen aus dem Layout verstehen kann, die wegen der hirnerweichenden „Klingeling“- und „Quietsch“-Sounds genervt meine Bürotür zugeknallt haben, und selbst, wenn ich Musikstücke à la „fröhlicher Schlager-Pop“ hasse: Mir hat Sonic R Spaß gemacht, weil es schnell, witzig und einsteigerfreunlich ist. Trotzdem bleibt es nur ein netter Pausenfüller. Sonic-Fans und jüngere PC-Zocker dürften mit der Ferrari-Fassung des Igels richtig liegen.

Presque, car l'idée était bonne, un jeu de course utilisant l'univers si speed du hérisson, dans un jeu 3D d'une rare beauté, inventant de nouveaux personnages venus enrichir l'univers Sonic, malheureusement Traveller's Tales est retombé dans le principal travers qui caractérisait Sonic 3D, à savoir une maniabilité approximative et même rebutante, sans ajouter les éléments nécessaires pour procurer une certaine dose de fun. À défaut d'un hit, ce Sonic R en devient un jeu moyen et une fois de plus ou de trop, une nouvelle déception Sonic sur Saturn.

Unfortunately, the controls make it tough to stay in the middle of the narrow tracks, even with the analog controller. You often end up off the track or underwater, looking for a way to get back. I should also mention that there is some excellent R&B dance music that plays in the background of each stage, and two players can go head-to-head via a split-screen mode.

Sonic R for the Saturn features all of the lovable characters from Sega's previous Sonic games in a 3D racing game. Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Sonic, and the rest of the Sonic team are all ready to burn rubber...shoe rubber that is.

Over all, the game was fun to play and visually nice. Though this is one game I won't become addicted to anytime soon. If you have a younger brother or sister, they'll probably enjoy and appreciate the game alot more than you do.

Da habe ich nicht schlecht gestaunt: Schon eine Dreiviertelstunde, nachdem ich das Spiel gestartet hatte, flimmerte mir der Abspann entgegen. Zwar preist Sega es als Rennspiel für Kinder an, aber muß das heißen, daß jeder es an einem Abend durchzockt? Fünf Kurse und fünf Charaktere sind einfach zu wenig. Strecken, Grafik und Sound tummeln sich bestenfalls im Mittelmaß.

So, the goal of the game is a little different than normal racing games. We here at Game Revolution promote variation and love things that are different, just so long as they are fun. I found that I could not really sit down with this game because it is sooo different. I could never play the game long enough to find all the Choas Emeralds and stop Robotnik from ruling the world. Unless you think you can do better against his scheming ways, I don't recommend that you buy this game. Being a subject of an evil dictator isn't all bad; at least the trains run on time.

Admit it -- no one wants to hear that a Sonic game could ever be less than decent. Well, the truth hurts but it has to be told. Sonic R shares the same common problems that other less-than-decent games seem to have that hinder gameplay in more than several ways. Sure, it's in 3D but eventually after playing it for awhile you're not going to bother continuing on.
