Sonic 3, by contrast, represents the apotheosis of the Sonic concept: Unlike previous games, the stages are linked cinematically (Sonic and Tails literally tumble from one scene to the next), and the characters have some stunning new techniques-I, for one, never thought I'd see a spiny blue hedgehog on a pair of skis.

Skaffa genast Sonic 3! Basta!
GenesisThe Video Game Critic (Sep 09, 2001)
The third Sonic game really took the series to a new level. The one huge improvement was the addition of the save feature. Other improvements include a much better two-player mode that allows you to select game variations and zones. The split screens are now proportioned correctly and look great. The graphics look better than ever, and there are some new power-ups as well. The new bonus stage lets you run around a huge sphere, but it's not quite as fun as the Sonic 2 bonus stage. Still, this is considered by many to be the pinnacle of the Sonic the Hedgehog series on the Genesis.

This 'hog's gonna take the blue ribbon at the state fair...and probably in this year's game cart sweepstakes, as well.

This is an absolutely fabulous game, without a doubt. This has got to be of the all-time classics for Genesis and one of those games you won't put down for a long time. Sonic 3 is definitely a game you should not pass up, especially if you have Sonic & Knuckles.
GenesisPower Sonic (Jan 10, 2014)
Sonic 3 has achieved what few others could. It is a tenfold improvement over all of the other Sonic games with great music, awesome levels, more items and more secret passageways.

Sonic's back! Back! Back! This game re-establishes him as King of the Hill, Top of the Heap and Life Emperor of the Platform Universe. Huzzah! Huzzah!

WiiOfficial Nintendo Magazine (Jan 10, 2008)
Perhaps it's not quite as enjoyable as the second game in the series, but it's still one of the best platformers ever created. The music is fantastic (rumour has it that Michael Jackson provided the game's score, and Sega dropped his name from the credits after those allegations started), the graphics are some of the best you'll see on a Mega Drive game (check out the end of the first zone where the whole land is set on fire), and it's faster than a cheetah driving an F1 car. Essential.

GenesisGame Players (Mar, 1994)
After a disappointing Sonic 2, this one really blasts onto the scene. Detailed modeling and amazing animation make it even better than Sonic CD! Blue lightning strikes!

It's not all roses though. The puzzles are still poorly implemented (see: the infamous barrel puzzle in Carnival Night Zone) and it feels like a missed opportunity not to release this with its companion piece, Sonic & Knuckles, at the same time. You know, seeing as they were originally two halves of the same game. Still, it's Sonic 3, one of the absolute highpoints of the hedgehog franchise, and of 16-bit gaming in general. Snap it up.
WiiIGN (Sep 11, 2007)
Sonic 1 we called impressive. Sonic 2 we labeled great. Sonic 3, though, is the best of them all – and deservingly earns the highest score of the trilogy. But we recognize that the issue of its connection to the so-far-unreleased Sonic & Knuckles is a point of contention, and it may make even serious fans want to wait a while before investing 800 Wii Points here. If that's you, we understand. But we're going to give Sonic the benefit of the doubt this time and stand by the quality of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, even as a standalone game. Because compared to the trash he's been involved in lately, just Sonic 3 alone is pure gaming gold.

GenesisAll Game Guide (1998)
Picking up where the second game in the series left off, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is indeed true to its forebears. Players guide the running, jumping, spinning, dashing, swimming, hedgehog through six huge zones of play (including Carnival Night and IceCap Zone), each with a different theme. The music matches the levels extremely well, and the graphics are the best yet, especially terms of the lushly detailed backgrounds. Split-screen two-player races have returned from Sonic 2, as has Tails the fox. This time, however, gamers playing the one-player mode can pick up controller two and have Tails airlift Sonic out of danger. Other fresh features include tons of new enemies (including Knuckles the echidna), a special Insta-Shield super move, new special stages (involving dodging red spheres while grabbing blue ones), and a save feature, which is very helpful since this is the biggest, toughest, least linear game in the trilogy.
While it's somewhat disappointing that Sonic 3 doesn't flaunt it's 16-meg muscles as much as you might expect, it's still an instant classic that'll hit gamers of all ages and skills right between the eyes. If you take the time to venture off the beaten path and explore Sonic's world more thoroughly, you'll find that the fun will increase exponentially.
GenesisPlay Time (Mar, 1994)
GenesisPower Play (Mar, 1994)
The same procedure as every year!
WiiNintendo Life (Sep 07, 2007)
If you’re a fan of the previous iterations then this will be a no-brainer – Sonic 3 certainly manages to offer more than its fair share of super-fast entertainment, but those of you that were unmoved by Sonic 1 & 2 should probably give this a miss – it’s not going to change your perception.
Xbox 360IGN (Jun 11, 2009)
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is a fantastic game, but you can find it elsewhere for cheaper. This package adds a few things you can't find in most other Sonic re-releases, such as online play and leaderboards, but those really don't add much. Even with all of the downsides, this XBLA game is a great trip down memory lane for the remaining SEGA fanboys.
Xbox (UK) (Jun 17, 2009)
It's not Sonic & Knuckles, but that's about the only serious criticism that can be levelled at such a confident and polished sequel. Not quite a stone-cold classic, but close enough to make the low asking price a no-brainer.
Xbox 360Gamestyle (Jun 21, 2009)
For 400 Microsoft points, Sonic 3 is not just a pleasant trip down memory lane, but a welcome return to a series that has gone awry. In retrospect, it may not be the best in the series, but compared to recent outings it can almost be called a classic. Also, don't forget the imminent arrival of Sonic & Knuckles brings with it the connectivity ability to play as Knuckles in Sonic 3, which makes this very worthwhile.
WiiGameSpot (Sep 12, 2007)
Back in the 16-bit days, Sonic fans had to wait almost two years for the release of the third Sonic the Hedgehog game after second one. But thanks to the Virtual Console service, Wii owners only had to wait three months. At first glance, it'll probably seem incredible to you that Sega needed any length of time at all to produce what, on the surface, merely appears to be a formulaic follow-up to Sonic the Hedgehog 2. However, once you really dig in, you'll come to appreciate the many little improvements that help set Sonic the Hedgehog 3 apart from its predecessors.
Xbox 360PAL Gaming Network (PALGN) (Jan 28, 2009)
Sonic 3 is a fast and entertaining platformer, although it may be worth considering buying it inside of one of Sega's larger collections.
GenesisSEGA-Mag (Objectif-SEGA) (Feb 04, 2008)
Wii1UP (Nov, 2007)
Something is horribly amiss about Sonic's third outing. Is it the fact that the game wasn't fully completed and half the content was held back for the "sequel," Sonic & Knuckles? Is it the messy level designs, which seem to have been constructed specifically for the sake of bogging Sonic down with small, annoying impediments? Is it the dull and forgettable enemies? The tepid soundtrack? The irritating bonus stages? Ah, maybe it's all the above. Sonic 3 is, in retrospect, the point where the series' star lost some of its shine -- a decent if unremarkable game. Given its pedigree, "decent" isn't good enough.
