For those of you searching for a copy, know that this is perhaps the rarest NTSC game, so you're better off finding a PAL copy, because it's the same game and it will play just fine. Also, more importantly, remember that the NTSC version is simply an import with a different UPC sticker, so it's nearly impossible to tell the difference if you don't know what you're looking for. For those of you who've never played the Master System, find one and get this game, it will change your opinion of it forever.

With all of the attention put on the Genesis Sonic games there are a lot of people that forget about these 8-bit adventures. With brand new levels and some interesting bonus stages this stripped down version is actually worth playing, even if you've grown tired of the original 16-bit title. The game is a tad short and I'm not sure how many times you'll want to come back to it after you've beaten it, but it's well worth a few hours of your time. With a game like this it's easy to see why Sonic the Hedgehog was so successful, here's hoping that Sega can rediscover some of that magic and create a new Sonic game all of us fans have been waiting for.

The Master System Faithful can be thankful that even though the flow of titles has slowed to a trickle, carts like Sonic the Hedgehog make them well worth waiting for. Sonic speed, graphics, and gameplay - you can't touch that!

So, on the whole, this little 8-bit, step-down conversion of SEGA’s flagship mascot platformer is just curious and unique enough to merit both your consideration for download, and taking up its own space alongside the original in Nintendo’s Wii Shop. It’s lucky to get that space, too -- because, if today’s been any indication, it doesn’t even matter if you’ve put out an official press release to reserve your spot.

I don't like how Sonic on the Game Gear forces you to proceed at a very slow, deliberate pace. The bonus stages let you bounce on trampolines and bumpers to grab rings, but they aren't very thrilling. Slow-down often rears its ugly head, especially after you grab a power-up. Taking a hit only causes one ring to fly loose, but your total is reduced to zero anyway. No score is displayed when the game ends, and that's too bad. This portable Sonic is respectable, but if you've already experienced the stellar Genesis version, this will seem awfully tame.
