From the moment I put this game in I could see that a lot of hard work, love and dedication was put into this game. The game is stunning, the sound is great … some aspects worked so well but then a few glaring flaws popped up. The camera behaved beautifully and then it went all wonky, the uninspired God of War clone combat was a bit of a let down. This all leads to one thought ….. this title was rushed at the end. A few more months in development and this game would have received my highest praise. But this is still a very solid game to share with those young gamers close to your heart. So, on my continuum, Sonic Unleashed sits close to my “greatness” bookend but not quite there.

I have mixed emotions about Sonic Unleashed, I wanted it to be an amazing game and in some respects it is, but in others it missed the mark. The intro movie and high-speed levels are really enjoyable while they are moving along at blazing speeds and not being interrupted by tedious jumps. The Sonic the Werehog levels are also a nice change of pace, but a few of the puzzles and jumps became more frustrating than fun. The graphics look amazing and this is a game you want to pull out to show your friends the power of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, but it just doesn’t seem as polished as it could be. It is definitely a step up from the last few Sonic the Hedgehog games and hopefully a great sign of what is to come.

Hunting around the intermittent stages that follow each village on the world map for medals isn't exactly fun or enticing, whether you're in hedgehog or werehog form. It occasionally hints at a compelling use of the day/night dynamic to serve as the occasional puzzle, but the overall dated and confused design bogs down the experience and serves as little more than padding to the otherwise thoroughly engrossing main stages. That said, the ample selection of side missions provide more entertainment than they probably should.

Sonic has finally done it! After years of subpar titles, he finally managed to star in a game that does not reek of game design manure. Sure, there are some issues with cameras, controls and weird gameplay addition decisions but at least it was a good attempt. There certainly is lots of room for improvement but taking all into account Sonic Unleashed is just a good game that will keep you busy for quite some time, even if it is just to retry that insanely timed mission for the sixtieth time. A must buy for any Sonic lover and a recommendation for anyone that doesn’t know Sonic and would like to play a decent platform game.

The Sonic levels are extremely fun and bring back the memories of yesteryear, and the night-time levels will leave players wondering why Sonic Team continues to torture their fans by continuing to add pointless things to prolong good gameplay. If you can get by the fact that not every level takes place in the day, Sonic Unleashed should take the average gamer no more than ten hours to complete. As for which one to get, aside from the obvious drop-offs in visuals and sound it gets, the Wii version is probably the best. Sure, waggling from time-to-time will be tiring, but Sega fortunately gave players the option of choosing the standard nunchuck and remote controls, along with the options of having to use the Classic Controller or the GameCube controller, which makes everything a whole lot easier. Either way you look at it, Sonic Unleashed is the best 3D Sonic game to date, it’s just too bad Sega insisted on the werewolf gimmick.

To be quite frank, Sonic Unleashed is half great game, and half unnecessarily unleashed. The Sonic levels are extremely fun and bring back the memories of yesteryear, and the night-time levels will leave players wondering why Sonic Team continues to torture their fans by continuing to add pointless things to prolong good gameplay.

Despite the game’s clumsy story progression and repetitive werehog combat, it manages to be the best Sonic game released in recent memory. This is thanks mostly to the excellent hedgehog levels that evoke memories of classic Sonic titles while still managing to feel fresh and new. While everyone’s pleas for a return to form for the series weren’t completely satiated, the hedgehog portions of this title are a huge success and give hope for the future of this franchise. If Sega can get the adventure aspects of the next Sonic working as well as these speedy hedgehog levels, Sonic’s next outing could be just what longtime fans have been longing for.

Sonic Unleashed is not a horrible game, but there are certain elements that this game could do without. What will have many gamer's hopes up is the developers really nailed the Sonic portion of the game, but the pure sense of speed, action, and exploring. It will make gamers have flashbacks of earlier Sonic the Hedgehog days. Hopefully the next game in the series will focus more of this then adding a new gimmick to the series.

Xbox 360TeamXbox
I appreciate Team Sonic’s effort to mix the old with the new, and there’s definitely some potential in the alter-ego mechanic. Unfortunately, they don’t blend especially well in Unleashed, an experience that had me alternately stoked to get to the next traditional level and a bit disappointed every time the sun went down. Unleashed isn’t quite the return to form that Sonic’s patient fans have been waiting for, but it’s easily the franchise’s best console effort in years. And, the brilliant speed-based platforming moments prove that his handlers definitely have the potential for a great game tucked away somewhere. Those clinging to Sonic’s 16-bit rock star days will enjoy riding the nostalgic wave through Unleashed’s best blur-inducing moments, just as long as they prepare themselves for the pace-breaking combat levels.

Xbox 360Video Games Daily
The Sonic stages make for some very good platforming action and are quite entertaining, but they lack the depth that Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast offered; while the Werehog was another failed attempt at trying to make Sonic something he isn't. Diehard fans will once again enjoy this title, but for the Sonic franchise, it's another missed opportunity.
70
Xbox 360Worth Playing
Sonic Unleashed is the best that Sonic the Hedgehog has been in years, but this is probably damning it with faint praise. The Sonic segments are fun, and die-hard fans will probably be quite satisfied with them, but everything else just isn't. The werehog segments are playable but rarely enjoyable, and they make up a much larger bulk of your gameplay time then the Sonic the Hedgehog segments. The medal collecting is just aggravating. If it were just possible to play the Sonic segments and occasionally werehog out, the game would be fine, but forcing gamers to hang around the werehog or hub levels, fighting with the camera and looking for shinies, will become less fun. If you're willing to sit through two-thirds of a mediocre game, there is something fun to be found here, but ironically, how much you'll enjoy this latest Sonic game depends entirely on your patience. Rent first.

As it stands, Sonic Unleashed is not the drastic reboot they claimed it would be. The problem the game faces once again is focus. While the core speed gameplay proves to be the most enjoyable part of the experience, it also has to contend with the unfortunate baggage of hub worlds, bad level design (Eggmanland is one of the most poorly designed final stages I’ve ever seen), terrible camera, and yet another ho-hum gameplay style dragging it down. These unnecessary parts hanging off the side prove to be more time consuming than the sum of enjoyable parts, and make one wonder if Sonic Team really learned anything at all these past years. It's half of a good game, but like a terrible movie with a great soundtrack, it's really up to the player whether or not they'd be willing to slog through the awful in order to get to the moments of brilliance.

It’s a real shame because, apart from the Werehog stages, everything else has been done pretty darn well when you compare it to some of the previous titles. As an overall package, Sonic Unleashed is a hundred times better than its last next-gen outing and despite a few niggles is as enjoyable a Sonic game as we’ve played in a long while. Not only does it look fantastic, with some beautifully realized locations and well-designed dash stages, but the thrill of controlling Sonic at such speeds makes for an addictive and gripping experience.

It's such a shame that the Sonic series has fallen by the wayside the past few years and whilst it's definitely an improvement over the 360's first taste of Sonic; it's still not right. If you can stomach the layers of non-Sonic-esque hogwash, you'll experience some of Sonic's best moments this decade. Until the Sonic Team realise what the Sonic fans want which is fast speeds with high octane action, then this franchise could almost be dead in the water.

This is better than Sonic’s last main game. But that doesn’t make it good. I’d like to think Sega is on the right track, and that the next game might cut out a lot of the padding and focus on speed. But I’ve been hoping that for a decade now. As it stands, it’s hard to recommend Sonic Unleashed. There are some genuinely fun parts of this game, but they just aren’t worth everything that surrounds them. Maybe next time...

The main character’s name is SONIC – it’s a reference to how fast he can run. Why must the game include all this other random crap, especially when it isn’t all that polished anyhow? We understand that Sonic runs through levels so quickly that a game without excess junk would be shorter. But we’d happily play, replay, and replay over again a game that lasted only a few hours if it reminded us why we fell in love with this character in the first place.

Really, Sonic Unleashed is kind of a video game equation of sorts. If half the game is solid but far from perfect, and the other half is pitifully bland and repetitive, then the result equals an experience that ends up disappointing almost as much as impressing and entertaining. Even with no expectations going in, we can't imagine many in our ADHD generation holding patience enough to wade through 20-to-30 minute intervals of repetitive room clearing again and again just to find enough Sun tokens to unlock the next decent racing portion. It just isn't enough fun to warrant the effort.

If there's one last thought I'd like to leave you pondering, it is this: if Super Mario Galaxy can succeed in creating an all-ages experience that delights hardcore fans while welcoming first-time players and still introduce new gameplay experiences in the process, then why should a new Sonic game be any different? Moreover, shouldn't the decisions of the developer be held accountable, rather than those of the under-10s market? If you talk down to your audience and pander but never challenge, then you can't expect them to respond with respect – just soft, expressionless gamer-faces as vacant and harmless as the game they're playing.

Earlier in the year, I specifically said "if Sega can avoid marring the experience with boring apocalyptic stages, a gimmick, forcing us to play with anyone other than Sonic, Tails, or Knuckles, and avoiding disastrous cut-scenes, then all will be good." It's like Sega did this to spite me or something. They did exactly that, although not so much the apocalyptic stages. Regardless, in this adventure, there is a total of about 60 minutes of quality gameplay. The rest leaves me deeply upset with Sega and the hole they've dug for Sonic.

I really wish I could say this Sonic game was worth while. The asking price is just not good enough; this game should be discounted now! It is a much bigger improvement over the last Sonic game, but anything is better than that crap. Buy this if you are a Sonic fan, others should pass on the blue hedgehog again.

Ultimately, this simply isn't the fresh start Sonic fans were so desperately hoping for...but at least it's not as execrable as the last two efforts. It's not hard to spot the foundations for a beautiful, charming Sonic Renaissance beneath all the extraneous chaff, but Sonic Team seems wholly incapable of focusing on what makes this franchise so special. It's truly a shame, because their proprietary new graphical engine cranks out some spectacular vistas -- if only it were more fun to traverse them.

There are things about Sonic Unleashed that reminded me of how great this franchise could be when done right. It’s just a shame those parts weren’t the true focus of the game. Part of the allure of the Sonic series was how fast it played, and while it is true the running levels are shorter, they’re a lot more fun. Instead of cramming beat ‘em up levels down our throats, why couldn’t there just be more running levels? It’s a shame there’s only 50% of a good game here. Maybe one day, Sonic will see a return to glory, but for now, it’s like he’s running in place.

Sega's marketing departments gave British retailers the opportunity to have this game up for sale half price a week after it was released. This particularly desperate grab for customers shows how Sonic Unleashed is clearly devoid of great merit. It's too fiddly and obtuse to appeal to children, and too generic and tacky to cater towards the discerning taste of a gaming adult. The only possible reason you'd have for wanting this game is because it's cheap. The Sonic series presently feels something like a sinking ship, and the only possible thing Sega could do to redeem the series is design an HD version of Sonic 3.

Sonic Team has talent, we know that they do, but the Sonic series on consoles has been terrible for a while now. It's time that the developers hit the drawing board once more and look for a way to properly translate Sonic into the 3D world for the current generation. It's really hard to recommend a game like Sonic Unleashed when other platformers like Ratchet and Clank Future or Super Mario Galaxy are doing so much better of a job in the genre. It's a safe bet that hardcore Sonic fans will enjoy the day sections of the game, but nobody out there is going to have fun with the Werehog stages. It almost feels as if the game was handled by two different teams, both with very different levels of talent and completely conflicting gameplay philosophies. If you're a true hardcore Sonic fan, give the game a rental and enjoy the day stages. Otherwise, don't bother.

Sonic Team couldn't leave well enough alone and just accept a three-hour game with some decent replay value. Instead, they tossed in one of the dumbest "twists" in the history of gaming. A werehog? Really? Stretchy arms? Did anyone actually believe this was going to be fun? Gone are any elements of speed, replaced with mindless and poorly designed brawling segments with some terrible platforming sections.

Sonic Unleashed Dissociative Identity Disorder is 1/3 fun and 2/3 garbage. It's a shame because Sonic Unleashed started out strong with an impressive opening movie along with a cool introductory level. This only lasts for a short moment, then you will be driven completely mad an hour later from sitting through unnecessary dialog sequences and mindnumbing beat em' up levels. Team Sonic should have never left the beast out of his cage! The stretchy arms fur ball version of our beloved hedgehog is an abomination that never be spoke of again, lock that beast up! This is only one half of the bad, the other half comes in with some ill produced adventure sequences that carry on a declining landslide of a storyline. Sonic Unleashed had promise, and actually part of the game is pretty decent, but its too bad the entire game wasn't completed with the mindset of "Day" Sonic. Sorry Sonic, gamers pass on this one.

In other platform titles like the Mario games, you collect necessary items by finishing a level or task. But in Sonic Unleashed, the medals have nothing to do with finishing a level. The end result is that you’ll have to replay levels multiple times in order to find enough medals to progress. The amount of backtracking required in Sonic Unleashed is absolutely inexcusable, and this mandatory medal hunting is the nail in the coffin. However, there isn’t enough of the traditional view and mode in Sonic Unleashed, and too much playing with the Werehog. All I can do, and it kills me to say this, is advise you don’t get this game. Simply because it’s a poor game, with a score propped up by a better, more traditional Sonic available to play. Sadly it’s not available to play with enough.

Admittedly, Sonic Unleashed is marginally better than the execrable 2006 effort, but that's incredibly faint praise and only useful as a benchmark to the most blinkered fan. Compared to Mario Galaxy or Ratchet & Clank - heck, even compared to Crash Bandicoot, another platforming mascot mired in mediocrity - Sonic Unleashed is an obviously poor effort from a series that is still hopelessly lost in the modern gaming landscape.

Even disregarding the years of built-up expectations held by fervent Sonic fans, Sonic Unleashed comes across as a poorly conceived experience -- a mish-mash of disparate ideas and sloppy execution that shines occasionally but largely just disappoints to a significant degree. That it fleetingly succeeds only adds heartbreak to an already negative reaction.

Sonic Unleashed is a difficult game to enjoy, which is a shame because the graphics are the prettiest in any recent Sonic game. The 2D running stages, modeled after various cities, are fantastic to look at; even the same old grinding down rails is a joy when blocks and blocks of suburbs sprawl down below. Enemies are a little generic at times (Dr Eggman needs to stop building robots and get some friends), but it's hard not to appreciate little touches in certain stages, like dutiful pelicans who point out the way for Sonic when he gets lost.

The epic storyline is inappropriate for a Sonic title, and the endless, unskippable cut-scenes are torture to watch. The boss battles are too frequent, too long, and often too difficult. Was this game even play tested? Irritating tightrope-walking sequences, confusing objectives, boring slide-the-block puzzles, frequent "you can't go here yet" messages, cutesy sidekicks, vomit-inducing voices, and fatal water are just a few of the torments Unleashed inflicts upon the player. Bad games happen, but to create something as supremely unlikeable as Sonic Unleashed, you really have to make the effort!
