The controls, while simple in nature, are very different from those in most games, and I think most people give up before really getting into the game. Another problem is that the first part of the game, where there’s not too much story, is rather large. Compared to the size of the entire game it is nothing, of course, but when you’re starting the game you don’t know that. I don’t think that was a mistake in the design, though. The beginning is great the way it is, because the game needs a large intro. The problem is that many people have way too short an attention span. The final problem that this game has is orientation. We are all used to having automaps - there is none in this game, and you can’t see very far (at least not on my computer). Most people will get lost in the village in the beginning. This takes quite some time getting used to, but believe me, it is worth it.

Overall Soulbringer delivers very well on all fronts of the RPG genre. It's unique approach to combat and magic, the interesting storyline, and the usual RPG joy of gaining some newer, tougher weapon or level up, make this a very enjoyable title indeed. One that I actually went through and completed and I haven't felt the need to complete a game in many, many months. The graphics are a minor let down in this game but don't let it put you off, there are plenty of surprises in this title and the more you play, the more enjoyable it tends to get.
If you are an RPG fan I would sincerely recommend you this title as a must-have. It will provide sufficient quantities of medieval fun until the end of the month (if you're very persistent and don't lay off it for days, 'cause it's not that short) when Diablo two appears.

Soulbringer is a BIG game. After several weeks of playing I'm still only in the second chapter of a total of five. I'm looking forward to finishing it, though. My wife just got Diablo II, so keep an eye on the Now Playing list to see which one wins (and keeps) my affection... Now, if you'll excuse me, I have some revenant-killing to do...

Soulbringer is one of the more addictive games that I have played in recent days. Despite some of its failings, it plays well for those who can adapt to the quirky combat system and awkward control scheme. It has been quite a long time since I found myself awake until 5am playing on my PC, but Soulbringer has kept me coming back for the story and the innovative gameplay. Infogrames did a decent job of melding adventure elements into an exciting role-playing frame. Sadly, the problems with the graphical engine and the interface prevents Soulbringer from reaching its full potential. However, if you can look past the control problems and remember that few modern fantasy stories are truly original, Soulbringer is an amusing detour into a rich and vibrant world, worthy of a spot on the shelf of any RPG aficionado.

You really have to work hard at this one if you want to have any fun. It starts out slow and quickly becomes confusing to the point of senselessness. Soulbringer takes the brilliant concept of starting you out knowing nothing about the game itself and teaching you about the world and the story as you go. Unfortunately it doesn't make things clear soon enough for you to appreciate the good points of the game. The story isn't that great, the graphics aren't anything special, and the strengths of the rest of the game seem to fall by the wayside as a result. But having said that, a small amount of fun is there for anyone with the patience to see it through.

Game Revolution
Soulbringer is a pretty good romp. It's got decent graphics, lots of depth, a cool combat system and it's really long. Really, really long. That's one of the best things about RPG's - if you enjoy the trip, you'll get plenty of entertainment time for your money. And what could be more important than money to you, or me, or the "hardest working man in show business?" How about soul?
It's unfortunate that Soulbringer's lackluster graphics and poor interface compromise what's otherwise a fairly standard action/role-playing game with an interesting combat system. It's even more unfortunate that it was released in the United States around the time that so many other excellent computer role-playing games were - which makes Soulbringer especially difficult to recommend.

GameSpot UK
Soulbringer contains some interesting plot development, quests and challenges, but too much formula to be original. It's pacing is wrong too. If you're the kind of person who sat through Star Trek: The Next Generation in the hope that despite three series of absolute tripe it would get better - which it did - then this game will fit your kind of pacing well. Many others will just switch off, perhaps advisedly so, with the arrival of Diablo II and the promise of more immediate thrills.
Electric Playground
Soulbringer takes a nice shot at trying to add some spice to an otherwise very ordinary RPG adventure, but ultimately it just isn’t enough to save this title. It’s far too slow of an experience with a far too familiar story.
Despite playing the game for a week straight (forcing myself at gunpoint after about the third day), I simply could not get any further than about four hours into the game. I died at every turn, from brigands, conjured assassins, and poisons. Dying 15 times in a row is not fun. Soulbringer was a game that could have been good, but falls by the wayside because of bad implementation. If you can get past the horrors of the interface and the terrible voice acting, you may find a pretty good, original story buried within. But be warned, playing the game is an exercise in patience. Interacting with the game takes a lot of time, and you will probably die more than a few times trying to do so.
Computer Gaming World (CGW)
But as much as it gets right, it blows. The 3D engine looks great, but ultimately is extremely frustrating, as you’ll spend more time just trying to position the camera and move your character than you will actually solving any puzzles. The motion-capture animation looks great. but it’s butt-slow — I was loathe to pick tip items I needed or to open doors just because it took too damn long. The interface is needlessly ugly and confusing, and the inexplicable lack of an auto-map makes it hard to keep track of where you are. It’s not awful, but it could have been way, way better. Wait for the bargain bins.

Overall, when compared to the quality of other games under Interplay’s banner, I had been expecting to be blown away by this game. Instead it was a buggy, unresponsive, unintuitive, frustrating experience. Let's call it the Ed Wood of video games and be done with it.
