At a $20 price point, Space Invaders Extreme is an absolute steal for DS/PSP owners out there. There's a lot of hidden depth to the single player experience, and you'll get a decent amount of use from the multiplayer aspect as well. I highly suggest picking this one up, even if you were never a big Invaders fan to begin with. It's a great game that just about anyone can pick up and play without feeling intimidated in the least bit.

PSPPlaystation Illustrated
Space Invaders Extreme takes the same care with the Space Invaders license. There are new game mechanics. Things are changed. But not all at once. There are new enemies: big enemies, small enemies, enemies with shields of different types. There are differences between rounds: sometimes enemies simply move down the screen, slowly, while at other times, the left half and the right half move independently of each other. There are different power-ups: a very powerful, but short-lived laser weapon upgrade, a bomb weapon upgrade, a wide-shot weapon upgrade and a shield. There are a variety of different enemy mother-ships, with different scores and effects. However, at its heart, Space Invaders Extreme is Space Invaders, providing the same fast-shooting, missile-dodging excitement it did 30 years ago.

Space Invaders Extreme is simply outstanding through and through. Nothing has been overlooked, and nothing feels left out. The upgrades to the Space Invaders formula make the game just as engaging as it was 30 years ago when it was first released.

We have been waiting for Space Invaders Extreme to come to the Live platform for what seems like an eternity, and it certainly doesn't disappoint. Polished and intelligent, this is a fiendishly addictive blaster at a bargain price point.

Unlike the DS version, the PSP does not offer an online mode. Included are two-player modes which are a lot of fun, but will require another copy of the game. The game runs smoothly in single or two-player mode. It manages to use the PSP's screen to good effect so that everything is easy to see. However, you may want to turn off the distracting, undulating background. Despite the modern casino-inspired soundtrack, the music pulses perfectly to the onscreen action, essentially marrying the audio with the visual. I found myself going into a musically inspired trance, allowing the beat to complement my timing of the weapons. The controls couldn't be easier. Move left, move right, fire. A more complicated control scheme does not a good game make.

Even if you’ve never tried Space Invaders before, the title is totally worth it for the sheer bang for your buck factor. When $20 buys you one of the best-updated classic games of all time, you have no reason to complain. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go ice my aching thumbs.

Space Invaders Extreme did the impossible - turned this long-time skeptic into a true believer. This isn't just a fun retro resurrection, it's a phenomenal action game that should be in everybody's collection. At $20 there's no reason to be without Space Invaders Extreme.

Considering how expertly Taito reworked Space Invaders' gameplay, prepare to be a bit disappointed by the predictable (if inoffensive) audiovisual overhaul. Your personal enjoyment of the techno soundtrack will vary based on your patience for shrill beeps and drum rushes, but you may need to turn off the PSP version's trippy full-motion-video backgrounds in order to keep up with the action amid the chaos. But, then again, Space Invaders was never intended to be a graphical powerhouse, and with its solid, pick-up-and-play action and an easily digestible $20 price point, Extreme makes for a perfect summer gaming distraction.

Space Invaders Extreme may not meet with the approval of purists that can only appreciate a clean, black-and-white retro look. It plays like a dream from the standpoint of control and is visually attractive, with gameplay that draws from the franchise's tradition and innovates in a limited fashion. Multiplayer that involves more than just taking your friend's place in front of the arcade cabinet is refreshing, especially with online or wireless play as an option. I'm a fan of not switching genres with these new versions of classic arcade titles, more the "upgrade rather than transform" school of nouveau retro. In that vein, I'd say that Taito and Square Enix scored a direct hit with Space Invaders Extreme.

Space Invaders may now be the unfashionable side of 30 but it's still able to mix it up with the best modern gaming has to offer. This is a superlative modernisation of a classic game

While the graphics are definitely dated, it’s the audio that makes the game stand out; crafting a classic game around music was definitely a gamble, and it really paid off this time. With a nice handful of stages, gameplay modes, and online connectivity, this game is perfect for those looking for something fun and easy to pick up. So do yourself a favor and give Space Invaders Extreme a shot. Get back in touch with your inner retro gamer.

There is so much scope and depth here that we could ramble on all day, but we’ll let you lot figure that out for yourselves when you buy the game. Because we are going to recommend that you do. Space Invaders Extreme is easily one of the best games we’ve ever played on the DS and it has some competition. As far as DS shooters go, it is king. There is nothing at all on the DS that can touch this if you like moving a space ship around and shooting things. Not even Geometry Wars: Galaxies. We have missed things out, and our hands are suffering from spasms, but we don’t care, because we’re going to play some more Space Invaders Extreme.

Minor quibbles aside, Space Invaders Extreme is just that -- an extreme and extremely revamped yet conceptually faithful update on a classic. In the mean time, though, just about anyone can play the game normally and be more than pleased with the offering. Fogeys like us that actually remember playing the games (even if we were wearing feety pajamas in the arcades) will eat up the loving attention paid to the original game, and newcomers will discover the building blocks for a timeless kind of addiction that only the true classics can provide. No matter what kind of gamer you are, you need this in your PSP library.

Space Invaders Extreme is a definite must-buy. While it’s got some minor nagging issues that hurt it, especially given how the arcade-ish nature of the game lends itself towards multi-player action, the game as a whole is fantastic. Anyone who’s ever enjoyed a game of Space Invaders owes it to themselves to give this a shot, and anyone who hasn’t had a chance to should at least try out the trial game…and then play the Taito Legends collections to partake of more SI games.

In light of all that though, Space Invaders Extreme is still an exceptionally worthy addition to the franchise, giving you a healthy dose of nostalgia while still throwing enough good new ideas into the mix to keep the game fun in the short amount of time the experience lasts. Also, since the title is only $20, you aren't really losing much of an investment if you grow tired of it after a week or so of playing.

While some aspects of Space Invaders have aged over time, the quality of fun certain hasn’t left. Space Invaders Extreme is the perfect companion on the go, whether or not you have friends with handheld gaming systems. It can keep you entertained on a five-minute way for the bus, and it will keep you busy when the days are slow. With the budget price tag of $20 for both the PSP and DS version, it’s not matter of when or why to get it—it’s a matter of which one you should get. If you’re going to be playing it alone all the time, the PSP version is the way to go because of its wide screen and superior sound quality. If you have friends who enjoy having a little bit of fun, it’s the DS version you want.

As far as retro recreations go, Space Invaders Extreme is near the top of the heap. Sure, the control scheme and general concept may be rather basic, but basic isn't always a bad thing, and the new perks only add to the manic experience. If multiplayer is important to you, opt for the DS version, but either will deliver hours of thumb-numbing fun.

The graphics are crisp and sharp, not too snazzy and not too lazy. It all feels just right. It is simple, but intelligent. It feels fresh and familiar. Not too easy, not too hard. Space Invaders Extreme is a walking oxymoron. It does what a good shooter does and balances risk with reward, encouraging you to play it with flair and rack up huge combos then shoots you down for getting ideas above your station. Essentially, Space Invaders Extreme becomes an experience that I think everybody should get in on, but I'm also fully aware that it's the kind of game that can't really be appreciated unless it's played. None of my prattle can do much to change that. But, if you are sitting on the fence about this one, I urge you to take the plunge and pick it up.

Xbox 360Hooked Gamers
Overall this is another terrific XBLA update of a classic from yesteryear. Anyone with a fond memory of Space Invaders or a love for shooters should definitely pick this up at its 800 MSP ($10) price tag. However, if you already own a previous version of Extreme, be aware that there is little in the way of new content other than the revamped graphics.

Xbox 360Console Monster
To conclude, Space Invaders Extreme is extremely good. It’s one of the better re-makes on the Xbox Live Arcade though the lack of game modes is a slight disappointment, despite the fact that the ones evident in the game do a great job of keeping players entertained. Whilst the 800 Microsoft Point price tag may be a little too high for the content on offer, it certainly isn’t too high for the fun it provides.

This is the perfect portable game as it takes the 70s arcades and puts them in your hand. If you own a handheld, the obvious reason is that you want quick bursts of gaming on the go. The game will keep you occupied on a bus journey or a flight to the south of France. It doesn’t need to hold your attention for any longer. It’s got unlimited playability because of that. It is undiluted gaming at its most basic.

Xbox 360GameSpot
Whether or not you grew up on, have already discovered, or are experiencing the franchise for the first time, Space Invaders Extreme is a refreshing redux of a seminal shooter that shouldn't be passed up. The challenging campaign will have you struggling to beat your buddies' leaderboard high scores by acing specific shots and triggering back-to-back fever bonuses, and settling your scuffles online could make for some long, technotronic nights in which time becomes irrelevant.
80
Nintendo DSPlayDevil
It is a perfect game for all game players new and old and is great for a short blast or if you are looking for a few hours of entertainment. The only criticism of the game is that the gameplay can get slightly repetitive despite each level offering different challenges. This could put off some of the more casual gamers but we at Playdevil would highly recommend this game and as an added bonus it can be picked up relatively cheaply both online and from your local games retailer.

It’s an impressive game and despite the fact a hacked PSP has the largest shmup catalogue that exists on pretty much any format, it’s an impressive title. An essential purchase for any 2D shmup fan. Let’s hope the best Space Invader game in the series gets a western release.

Nothing should stop any self-respecting gamer from picking up this title. As Namco proved with the release of the utterly sublime Pac-Man Championship Edition in 2007 on the Xbox 360`s Live Arcade, it really is possible to teach an old dog new tricks. Space Invaders Extreme is undoubtedly a triumph and is utterly essential for anyone with even a passing interest in the genre and gaming history itself.

Space Invaders Extreme is a fast-paced, stylish shooter that every hardcore DS owner needs to buy. It’s probably the best old-school action the system has to offer this side of Contra and at only twenty bucks, there’s no reason not to pick it up. Some minor quirks stop it from becoming a classic, but all in all, this is one hell of a way to celebrate an anniversary.

Seriously, though, what do you want for $20? It's more than worth the price, even if you're not familiar with the series. It's been around for thirty years for a reason, and there's no better time to discover it than with Space Invaders Extreme.

Space Invaders Extreme for the PSP is quite possibly the best reboot of a classic game you will get to play this year. Somehow, Taito and Square Enix managed to take a 30-year old formula and inject new life into the classic shooter to make this one seriously addictive game for gamers both young and old school. You cannot go wrong with this one.

Xbox 360IGN
Space Invaders Extreme is entering a pretty crowded virtual shelf, with amazing retro updates and influences like Pac-Man Championship Edition and Geometry Wars, two games I personally feel are far superior throwbacks than Space Invaders Extreme is, at least on the Xbox 360. The Xbox Live Arcade version of Taito's 2008 handheld game might have all the same elements that made an incredible shooter on the PSP and Nintendo DS, but as a console experience it's dialed down to simply "good."

Kenelle Space Invaders Extreme sitten on tarkoitettu? Kokeneelle pelaajalle taas peli on turhan helppo. Vaikka suojat on poistettu (ja osin siirretty vastapuolelle), ammuksia on varsin helppo väistellä, eikä toiminta juuri muuksi muutu pelin kuluessa.

Space Invaders Extreme's simple arcade shooter gameplay mixed with present-day style is an easy fit for Xbox Live Arcade. Of course, if you already own the game in another form, there's little new here that will make you want it, but personally, I can see myself buying it again for XBLA, just because I enjoy the core game so much. At any rate, it's $5 cheaper than the retail handheld versions, so you're getting an extra affordable edition of a universally-praised shooter.

Like Pac-Man Championship Edition, Space Invaders Extreme has brought back an old game in a fresh way. It’s enjoyable, and brings back nostalgic memories of playing the original Space Invaders in arcades (because I was too young to know that the game was already fifteen years old). However, Space Invaders Extreme is easily overshadowed by two comparable XBLA games: Geometry Wars 2 and Pac-Man Championship Edition. Add in the fact that it’s already been out on handhelds for a year, and this coat of paint doesn’t feel as fresh as it should. If you’re a fan of Space Invaders, this is a no-brainer, but if you’re just looking for an addictive Xbox Live Arcade game, download the demo first.

Xbox 360Game Revolution
We can stop and wonder how Space Invaders Extreme will shape up against heavy hitters in XBLA like Geometry Wars, but kudos has to be given to Taito for trying to spice up one of their oldest franchises. While not being the first ever re-imagining of Space Invaders, Space Invaders Extreme is certainly the most striking, both visually and mechanically. It plays mostly like past versions, and the additions made in terms of online only make this 10 dollar (800 Microsoft Points) game more enticing to buy, considering how much the DS and PSP iterations cost.
75
Nintendo DSThe Video Game Critic
Although the playing field is smaller, this DS version packs every bit of pizzazz found in the PSP edition. The aliens burst into colorful explosions and frenzied backgrounds overwhelm the senses. I like the layout of this DS version better, with all the gauges and indicators relegated to the top screen. Pleasant electronic beats and digitized voices also add to the experience. High scores are saved automatically. Space Invaders Extreme isn't destined to be a classic, but as a celebration of the original game, it plays the role very well.

Space Invaders is supposedly most entertaining in its four-player mode, so it's a shame that the online component never worked for me. The single player is fun for a short amount of time, and the way the music integrates with the game adds to the quality of the game in a big way. I'm not quite sure that the experience provided by the game is worth the $10 it's priced at, but if you have some friends and more than a couple controllers you might get some kicks out of it. I like and respect what the developers of Extreme did with the game in this update, and it's clear that they're a talented crew. It seems, however, that what was great fun 30 years ago is just a tad bland now, regardless of how much spitshine has been put into the product.

It's simple enough for anyone to play, but with enough nuances to challenge experienced gamers. And the whole package is smoother and shinier than Nuno Bettencourt's hair.

At the budget price of $20, we still recommend this reinvention of a timeless classic. The PSP version has a slicker visual presentation and better music quality, but lacks the online play, so if you own both, you'll have to decide which of these is more important to you.

I really dislike the bonus rounds. Not only do they disrupt the flow of the game, but they're generally a lot less fun that the normal waves! Extreme does have some innovative audio effects. Pleasant tones are played as you shoot each alien, creating a little song in the process! High scores are saved, but since "continuing" retains your previous score, it's rather confusing. I'm really not sure what to make of this game. Space Invaders Extreme lives up to its name, but it really lacks focus and left me feeling unsatisfied.
