SEGA 32XAll Game Guide
Still, Space Harrier sticks to its Arcade roots and remains a total joy to play. No fan of the game who owns a 32X should be without it. It's one of the few must-haves on the system.

The game doesn't just look pretty - it also plays brilliantly too. I wouldn't be lying if I said the gameplay is tough, but it's addictive too. In fact, I think the Engine version is a tad more playable than the coin-op original! What higher recommendation can I give?

Sure, it gets repetitive, but if you're looking for a genuinely thrilling arcade experience, nothing else on Virtual Console comes anywhere near it.

The speed and instant playability of the coin-op have all been transfered to computer superbly, and these attributes alone make the Amiga Space Harrier the most faithful of the conversions from the coin-op yet. Fluid movement, fast paced gameplay, a driving soundtrack and all action blasting - what more could you want?

Atari STThe Games Machine (UK)
Elite have converted a difficult coin-op with a high degree of success. The presence of multi-load brings things to a grinding halt between levels and the crackly speech does the ST no favours, nut the end result is a well presented, highly exhilarating, though shoot-'em-up with graphics to be proud of.

Space Harrier does have a few flaws that keep it from greatness, but if you can overlook repetitive game play, similar level designs, and a few cheap deaths, then you are just the person Space Harrier is looking for. If you own a Master System and love 3D shooters, then there's no reason for you to delay picking this game up right now!

Well, this is a lot better than shoving 50p into a hydraulic machine gadgi and dying three times before you've even had a chance to stick your bum on the chair. I reckon, if you're the sort of person who can't even stand losing 2p in the bubble gum machine, this is the conversion for you. Not only do you get all the entertainment value of brilliantly smooth full-screen scrolling, incredibly breathtaking and mega-fast action, you also get it for the price of 40 goes one of those fancy metal machines you have to wait ages to get a shot at. Bargain or what?

Atari STST/Amiga Format
By the time you've reached the fifth level and ridden the back of a dragon you'll be hooked on the spectacular action of Space Harrier. Because of its high quality graphics content you just can't write it off as arcade fare. It really is an excellent conversion and its screen velocities alone should ensure equally fast sales. Get Ready!

AmigaComputer and Video Games (CVG)
Altogether you have ten levels to deal with in this Amiga version - the same as the ST. They get tougher as you go - speeding up - so that it is going to take you quite a while to clock it. Space Harrier fans will be well pleased with the 16-bit versions.

I never really rated SH in the arcades. To me it was just Sega saying ‘We’ve got a new, even faster 3D routing, and we’re gonna use it’. However, SH on the Amiga is a masterpiece of programming. The scrolling is just as silky smooth as the arcade, and as for the update on the sprites themselves: Brilliant. Colour has been used really well, too. Sound is good. Elite have successfully managed to take the original Space Harrier tune and jazzed it up a bit. All the in-game effects are there, as well as speech. SH has finally been converted perfectly. It looks good and thankfully it plays very well.

Space Harrier's an old game, but this latest version is close enough to the arcade classic to make it a nice trip down memory lane for players who love the game. If you've never seen the game before, by all means take this Harrier for a test flight.

SEGA 32XIGN
This is a fantastic home version of Space Harrier that is practically pixel perfect. If you dig the arcade classic, then you will certainly dig this port. However, it is disappointing that SEGA did not offer any new content on the cartridge despite coming out on the 32X almost ten years after its arcade debut.

Welcome to the Fantasy Zone! In 1985, Sega unleashed two arcade games that would lay the foundation for a string of successful single-player titles utilizing the graphics engine, and a similar style of gameplay. The games? Hang-On and Space Harrier. It's not hard to see their legacy. Games like After Burner, the Outrun series, G-Loc, and Power Drift all display obvious resemblances to these two classics. Space Harrier also appeared on numerous other game consoles and computers during the 8 and 16-bit era. This was one wildly popular game.

Despite improvements to earlier versions of Space Harrier, the game is still a little dated. If you've already played the arcade game and the cartridge versions that have been released since then, you may very well want to skip this one.

Space Harrier is a classic, and there's little doubt as to whether it deserves that status. If you're going to play it, you can seek out some of the compilations that carry it (Sega Ages on the Saturn), find the arcade cabinet, or stick with this version. Any of them are fine, though you might as well try to get something extra on the Saturn

Space Harrier is weird but original. It's is a 3D game where you control a man with a jet-pack flying into the screen. Objects scale as they approach you. This was a pretty popular game in the late 80's when the graphics were still impressive. Your man flies a few feet above the ground, shooting everything in sight while dodging missiles and other objects. The bizarre adversaries you encounter run the gamut from stone heads to UFOs to giant mushrooms to dragons. There are bosses at the end of each stage. It's a hectic shooter, and objects like pillars approach very fast and can be tough to avoid. Space Harrier looks and feels very similar to Afterburner, and the gameplay is just as shallow. In fairness, it's pretty close to the arcade version, so if you liked that, you'll like this.

An uninspiring 3D shoot'em up and a somewhat 'incomplete' conversion.

WiiIGN
The second appearance of the Space Harrier series on the Virtual Console is just as disappointing as the first, and only highly nostalgic fans of this particular version should consider spending 500 Wii Points to download it. It's just unfortunate that that's the case, though, since Space Harrier is actually a capable classic game -- these emulated, downgraded ports just don't do the original concept justice. There is a more faithful conversion of Space Harrier that was released for the TurboGrafx-16 years ago, which could conceivably come to the VC itself some day in the future. And if it does, maybe it will prove to be more worth your while. But for now, stay away. Keep your Points saved for later, or else spend them on a different Master System title that doesn't make that machine look quite so bad.

Oh! Detta var nostalgi. Ett av de sista spelen jag gav mig på hos min gamla Spectrum var Space Harrier. På den gamla harven var spelet uselt. På Amiga är det bara dåligt – alla 3D-effekter till trots.

Space Harrier is awful. It doesn't deserve any amount of interest because it sucks. It's one of the worst games I've ever played. I thoroughly enjoy suck, if it sucks right. But there are some games that just suck so bad they're not even enjoyable. This is one of those games. It's so bad on so many levels that it nearly defies imagination. Just look at how much I wrote up there, I couldn't believe it myself and I probably didn't cover everything.

Sorry, but there's no way you can do a game like this on the Master System. In Harrier, you control a man flying over a planet surface, shooting all types of monsters and objects that come over the horizon. The intense scaling really requires some hardware support. Heck, even the Genesis couldn't pull this off. The rough animation and obvious "shape stamping" makes the screen look like a total mess. The more objects you have on the screen, the more ugly and confusing it looks. Control is good, and there are a few voice sound effects, but overall this game is a lost cause. If you're looking for some fun arcade action, stay away from this.
