If you come to Space Rangers 2 looking for sobriety (or sober, for that matter), you'll probably still get sucked in—it'll just take longer. What at first resembles a straight-up freeform trading sim soon detours impishly into genre jambalaya. It's like walking onto a Baz Luhrmann set where everyone's somber and serious, then suddenly belting symphonic renditions of "In the Name of Love" as the whole house bops and swings. Don't get me wrong, the particulars are deep and methodical, but Space Rangers 2 is the Cindy Lauper of space-trading sims: It just wants to have fun.
Space Rangers 2 is the deep, dynamic, non-linear (yet surprisingly accessible) RPG experience that PC gamers grew up on and haven't seen much of lately, as console style RPGs continue to influence the market. Unfortunately for the US market, Space Rangers 2 has yet to find a publisher here in the states which means you'll probably have to go out of your way to find one of the handful of retailers that carry the UK import. Make no mistake about it, you should. The RPG world has a new high water mark.
There is not a single second wasted in the entirety of the game and there is no mistaking it for a small game. Space Rangers 2 is epic in scope, gargantuan in size, and goes so far beyond fun it borders on ridiculous. I am absolutely drunk in love with this magnificent title and have forced myself to finish this review just so I can get back to saving the universe - with a little pillaging on the side.

I have always found games loosely following genre definitions more appealing than conventional titles, because even a small thing like the RTS bit in Giants: Citizen Kabuto can add another dimension to a game and make one feel a part of and in control of a bigger world. Space Rangers 2, however, has lots of bits and many pieces from all over the place, but instead of being a mess of disconnected gameplay elements everything is coherently built and easy to use.
Given the high quality of the main game, tons of gameplay available through mini-games and side-quests, and the fact that the original Space Rangers is also included on the DVD for a fairly low price, this is something that gamers should add to their collection. Coming to grips with the scope and sheer amount of freedom may take some time, but that time is well spent.
What makes Space Rangers 2 so successful, even beyond its addictive “one more turn” exploration and trade, is that it delivers a constant stream of surprises. We can definitively state that there is no better turn-based-real-time-first-person-arcade-adventure-shooter on the market today. It’s not perfect, but its loveably awkward dialogue, riotous fusion of different genres, and care-free attitude make it one of the best games this year. Even better, since we Yanks missed its predecessor, it comes boxed with the original Space Rangers. In other words, Space Rangers 2 shouldn’t be missed by any self-respecting PC gamer.
I had Advance Wars: Dual Strike, Radiata Stories, the online client for the Spycraft CCG, and a ton of other games to play and review. I was playing them before Space Rangers 2, and after I installed the game, I basically didn't touch any of them again until after I had beaten Space Rangers 2. After I had purchased the game, I replied to the guy with the MIT alumni address and told him, "Well, you've now completely sidetracked my review schedule." Not only is the best game I've played this year...it probably just cracked my top 15 games of all time.
Essentially, the game’s amazing, but I had to put myself in quarantine for a week to make sure it’s actually something I have to recommend to the world. Because it might be just because it’s precisely aimed at my soft spots – emergent situations, freeform universes, sheer quirkiness, and being constructed by an underdog developer in the middle of nowhere (Vladivostok, apparently). And it’s not that it doesn’t have enough flaws for a more sober minded reviewer to kick it down a little. But sober-minded reviewers give the latest merely competent game in a big franchise ninety percent because it exists, so to hell with them. Space Rangers is, in the language of the illiterate, Teh Aw3s0m3.
There's something about sci-fi that just 'does it' for me. Not just all sci-fi mind, mainly the 'utopian future' thing. You know, Blade Runner, 1984, Brave New World, V for Vendetta - that kind of thing just has this alarming rip on me. But mention sci-fi to your typical non-geek on the street and their first words will undoubtedly make that faint uttering of "what, you mean like Star Trek?" Philistines, the lot of them.
You’re crouched outside a cave. Near the entrance stand two burly guards packing heat. Do you: Attempt to sneak past them? Bait them away by dropping pictures of Madonna touching tongue with Paris Hilton? Wander away to the southern mountains to join a Feng Shui monastery? Or just crouch and gobble that buttery Taco Bueno burrito you’ve been carting around?
When I first heard rumblings from the gaming underground about a 2002 European game called Space Rangers that was never released in the States, my reaction illustrated the greatest hurdle the game has to overcome -- tittering at the cheesiness of the name. It was the same reaction I got from people in the office who asked what that silly-looking brightly colored space game on my monitor was, I had to answer "Space Rangers 2: Rise of the Dominators" and listen to them giggle. It's a silly title for the sequel to a game that not many people have heard of. Here's the thing, though: Once I actually got them to sit down and play the game, their giggling changed to gasps of awe as they got sucked into one of the most elegantly designed and compulsively enjoyable games released in recent memory.
It is well worth your time and money for this title. I really enjoyed playing it and am looking forward to coming back to this title to play the harder levels. Definitely a top pick for me, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I am.
While I tend to be more of a fast-paced action or FPS gamer, there are times I like to slow it down a bit and play something that’s a little more heavy on just sitting back and calmly enjoying myself. A while back, there was a game that really didn’t get a lot of recognition here in the States called Space Rangers, but despite its lack of popularity over here it was one of those rare gems of a title that you were happy to run across. Well, Russian developer 1C has released it’s sequel called Space Rangers 2 : Rise of the Dominators, and despite a little less than stellar title (the name, not the game), the game delivers a lot of solid gameplay and enjoyment on many fronts.
Apparently this game, as well as the original Space Rangers game, was designed and released in Russian before being translated to English for the US release. The fact that it's translated isn't bad, because lots of games are translated. The problem is that the translation, although getting the point across, isn't top-notch. You'll find yourself being pulled out of the game experience by sentence fragments and some frankly strange phrases.
Space Rangers 2 combines an eclectic mix of commerce, action, and RTS-elements, along with a strong visual presence. With that being said, it may falter because it tries to do too many things, instead of one aspect really well. However, you will probably grow fond of this variety of gameplay, mainly because it is a fresh approach to gaming, something that is always appreciated. And throw in a vast amount of replay value (and a free game too boot) and this title should go far. I just wish they would advertise a little better.
Needless to say, this game has a lot to offer and a lot to do with only some minor things really affecting how much you can enjoy the game. If you're looking for a game that will last you for a while, this one certainly fits the bill.
Space Rangers 2: Dominators ist ein gutes Weltraumspiel das mit seiner Mischung aus Strategie, Weltraum-Simulation, Action und ein bisschen Rollenspiel auf jeden Fall Spaß macht. Durch die Möglichkeit das Spiel immer wieder anders anzugehen und der Freiheit die Hauptstory nicht zu beachten bietet sich ebenfalls eine gute Wiederspielbarkeit.
Space Rangers 2 is a deep and innovative strategy game that allows you to venture through the galaxy, battling enemies, exploring new worlds and embarking on exciting quests! At first glance the title might seem like one of many other strategy games, however once you give it a chance you’ll discover a game unlike any other!
A topic of conversation at the IC-Games office was how many games Space Ranger 2 actually is. It’s a space sim, it’s a text based adventure, it’s a 3D shooter, and it’s a trading game. And it comes with the original game as well. A very impressive package with something for everybody.
Graphics are not what make this game. But when you add on the addictive gameplay, easy controls, great storyline and replay value, you have one solid game. When you add in the price tag this is definitely one you should consider if you like space games. I know I will be playing this one even when I have finished the review.
Space Rangers 2 succeeds in nearly every important area. It isn't the most beautiful or best-sounding game out there, but it is one of the most diverse. If you've got a craving for a sci-fi set RTS with in-depth robot building and retro text adventures, you'll want to give this a shot.
I actually looked this game up at the EB Games and IGN website before I actually received it for review. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect and wasn’t sure if I did want to buy it based on mixed reviews of the game, but once I started playing, I was hooked. It’s a completely addictive, open-ended, and intriguing game. I didn’t even play the first game, I actually didn’t even install it and I still have to say that this game is great. It’s completely original in game-play and story that this is probably in the top ten games on my list.
It has its flaws, but Space Rangers 2 remains a crazy, inspired, over-the-top, and addictive blend of gameplay.

Space Rangers 2 isn't a disappointing game by any means. In fact, it's quite entertaining when the story starts to pick up in the latter stages of the game. Unfortunately, the lack of direction at the outset of a campaign and the arduous learning curve turns away many players not willing to invest time in the title. I didn't enjoy the story of Space Rangers 2 more than a cinematic title such as Freelancer, but the game elements between the story increased the fun factor exponentially. Many times, I found the mini-games more enjoyable in a diversionary fashion when yearning to escape from hunting dominators. Space Rangers 2 should be purchased by lovers of the old school text-based style, RTS fans, or folks looking for a decent space adventure tale. Players should expect to spend a vast number of hours in the Space Ranger universe attempting to sample the plethora of gameplay.
Space Rangers 2 is the type of game that can easily pass underneath the radar. It's just one of those whacky "European games" from a developer, Elemental Games, that I've never heard of until recently, and considering its competition, I'd probably leave it on a store shelf and go on with my life, completely unaware that it's one of the best and most rewarding PC titles of 2006.
Look, there's a 8 down there in the review box. It's a compromise. For me, it's easily a 9, but for you, it might be a 7. That's the problem of assigning numbers to subjective experiences. But if you want to know what the game is like, read the review, go buy the game if it sounds interesting, and then make up your own mind. Real life, you see, offers even more freedom than this game does. It just has fewer lasers, no aliens that we know of, and no cool space heroics. And if you miss these things, this might just be the game for you.
Space Rangers 2: Rise of the Dominators was a surprise only because the game came out of nowhere (or Europe) and features and impressive amount of dynamic content allowing gamers to really dive deep into their own persona and live it out virtually. There's quite a bit to see and do here and the immense replay value and RPG elements provide an incentive to keep on flying. While the game won't win any awards in its presentation, it certainly shall for being one of 2006's sleeper hits, as long as we're allowed to skip over the introduction.
Space Rangers 2 is at its basics an adventure/RPG set in space. The game (released in Europe for quite some time and finally released in North America) is centered around a galactic struggle with a mechanized race known as the Dominators which showed up out of nowhere to give the five main galactic races a pounding. The Space Rangers are the first line of defense against these invaders and are pretty much an autonomous organization built as military and trade support. Players will need to climb up the Ranger ranks, gain new equipment, kill lots of dominators, help research thrive, and eventually take out the three main Dominator command units. How that happens is very open for interpretation.
Let's just get it out of the way early and say that Space Rangers 2: Rise of the Dominators is old school. Old Old Oldy McOld from Oldston, Oldsylvania. No foolin'. The graphics are pretty dated and mostly 2D. There aren't any eye-popping cut-scenes or processor-taxing effects. It's a mostly cerebral game that provides a complex, screw-aroundable universe rather than a streamlined or cinematic experience. Even some of the best bits in the game are essentially text adventures.
Eigentlich haben es solche Genre-Mischungen wie Space Rangers 2 in der Praxis schwer, denn vergleichbare Titel weisen in ihrer Disziplin immer mehr Komplexität auf. So kommt die ambitionierte Mischung im Echtzeit-Strategieteil keinesfalls an Dawn of War heran oder bei der Weltraum-Handelssimulation an Freelancer oder Darkstar One. Ähnliches gilt für die Weltraumkämpfe, die vergleichsweise spartanisch gegenüber Master of Orion 2 wirken, aber die Verknüpfung all dieser Elemente funktioniert erstaunlich gut und bringt ein hohes Maß an Abwechslung. Zusammengehalten wird die Mixtur mit einem lebendig wirkenden, frei erkundbaren Universum und einer Palette an Quests, die teilweise großartig sind, auch wenn sie nur auf Textniveau ablaufen z.B. der Knastaufenthalt. In Kombination mit der großen Handlungsfreiheit funktioniert Space Rangers 2 ziemlich gut und verbreitet trotz der störenden Musik und der nicht mehr zeitgemäßen Grafik eine ordentliche Portion Weltraumabenteuerspaß.
We missen de Star Control-humor in dit spel. SR2 is desondanks een dappere en degelijke poging. De game bevat heel wat gamespirit en heeft een erg groot 'kleine enthousiaste ontwikkelaar neemt het op tegen de bigbudget firma's en verdient daarbij onze steun'-gehalte.
Weltraum-Missionen, Echtzeit-Gefechte und ein dynamisches Wirtschaftssystem, garniert mit einer Prise Rollenspiel. Das macht Laune, erschlägt Sie aber mit Funktionsvielfalt. Empfehlenswert ist SR2 für Spieler, die Darkstar One, Freelancer & Co. mögen und bisher einen Einschlag von Echtzeit-Strategie vermissten.
Space Rangers 2: Rise of the Dominators displays a gleeful irreverence for genre conventions, throwing different gameplay styles into a mix that turns out to be bursting with random variety and imagination. Vladivostok-based Elemental Games and Cinemaware Marquee have released a title that is equal parts real-time and turn-based strategy, trading simulator, and even text adventure. It could best be described as the accidental creative byproduct of a collision between Elite and Sid Meier's Pirates! , yet Space Rangers 2 strains against such attempts at categorization and has a habit of constantly surprising you with the unexpected. The creative daring involved in this design strategy is refreshing and works well for the most part, but the lack of focus and over-ambitious reach could irk some gamers.
We can’t guarantee that this is a game for every one, but it has its charm and should easily appeal to fans of space-based trading and stats games in particular. Space Rangers isn’t going to blow you away, but it may just suck you up for a few long evenings.

All in all, Space Rangers 2 is a fun game. I would suggest picking it up if you're a fan of science fiction, and I would suggest taking a look at it if you aren't. I think only those who hate space and everything to do with it would dislike this game.
Hier kommt zusammen, was niemals zusammen gehört hat. Der "Ich kurve in 2D durchs Weltall"-Teil hat mit den 3D-Planetengefechten nur eins gemeinsam: Beide sind auf Dauer langweilig. So wiederholen sich die Missionen im All immer wieder. Ausserdem frustrieren die an Masse stets überlegenen Aliens selbst geübte Raumschiffkämpfer.
