For frustrated SAS wannabes - or would-be Green Berets, to be completely accurate - Spec Ops 2 should be high on your wanted list. With an amazing level of realism and stupendous atmosphere, it's the yardstick that other such games will be judged by. And you'll just have to carry on regretting that you never joined up...
Power Unlimited (Feb, 2000)
One other way Spec Ops II adds to the realism is the lack of an auto-aim feature. The Green Beret’s guns don’t aim for them, so why should yours? This might make it more realistic, but could cause you some problems if the main reason you’re playing a tactical strike force GAME is because you’re not actually skilled enough to be in a REAL tactical strike force. But, if you’re looking for (sometimes frustrating) realism, Spec Ops II: Green Berets delivers.

Wegtreten!

This game is a major improvement over the previous offerings in the line. It is hoped that Zombie continues on to develop this line and take into consideration the feedback from the rather large SpecOps players community.
Gameplay (Benelux) (Jan 28, 2000)
Spec Ops 2 is a good game but one that probably should have been kept in the development stages for a while longer to iron out some of its inconsistencies. In recent months, other tactical combat titles have outdistanced the standard set by the original Spec Ops. Ultimately, the enhancements made here don’t equal the level of the competition and are not enough to compensate for a lack of storyline and mission cohesion. While the Rangers led the way, the Green Berets fall behind in the ranks of competition.

GameSpot (Nov 16, 1999)
In the end, Spec Ops II is a marginally better game than the original. However, the squad-based combat genre that had quickly moved far beyond Spec Ops is now even farther ahead of its sequel. Though its graphics are good and its weapons selection is terrific, Spec Ops II's bizarre and poorly matched mix of action shooter and combat-simulation elements comes off as unbalanced and, more importantly, unenjoyable.
If you buy just one tactical sim this year, it shouldn’t be either of these; neither can hold an M4 to ROGUE SPEAR or the original RAINBOW SIX, still the unquestioned leaders for armchair commandos. While there are certain elements that might appeal to some gamers — the exciting multiplayer modes of DF 2, the unique “Green Berets do DOOM” feel of SPEC OPS II — the Tom Clancy-inspired titles outclass them every step of the way.
And now the agony—Spec Ops 2 quite simply is not finished. It suffers from bugs and certain crucial design omissions—your buddies will try to shoot through you despite their Beret training, and they often can't navigate 20 feet across flat terrain without getting stuck or straying. Enemies are little better, and often seem intent on running through insurmountable hillsides. You can only save between missions, and some of the missions can take up to two hours to complete (frustrating repetition abounds). The worst problem is the most insidious—the odds are strong that you will be completely unable to get the thing to actually run on your system with some brands of video cards.
Game Over Online (Nov 29, 1999)
To sum all of this up, you can learn to like this game to a certain degree. I did occasionally have some fun working my way through some of the levels. The control problems make the learning curve very high, but you learn and get used to it. The game’s repetitiveness and very high difficulty turned me off and the other problems, big and small, kept me away. I hear rumors that Spec Ops 3 will use the LithTech engine. Well, I can only hope because Zombie just can't seem to get it right on their own as far as game engines go. I couldn't and wouldn't recommend this game to anyone for any reason, there is simply too many other games out there that deserve your money.
Gamezilla (Dec 01, 1999)
I think we all know what I'm going to say in this section. I wouldn't buy this game if it was marked down to $9.99; there are just too many games out there that have much better graphics. Red Storm Entertainment has set the standard for tactical shooters, but Spec Ops 2 doesn't even get out of the starting gate. Enough said, gentle reader. I give Spec Ops 2 a score of 41/100 -- maybe next time Ripcord will listen to what game players want; if not, then I see no hope for the Spec Ops series of games.
incite PC Gaming (Feb, 2000)
The action is realistic, but the graphics, poor enemy artificial intelligence, and poor interface keep this game from meeting its goals.
GameStar (Germany) (Jan, 2000)
