Spelunky is all about the gargantuan, twisted, wonderful single player excavation, plumbing the depths time and time again, digging up hilarious death, and wangling your way onto the high score tables. It's impossible not to adore this game, and it's fantastic as a social experience too, battling friends to get the top treasure score and laughing and joking about your adventures. You need Spelunky in your life, there's no question about it.
WindowsResolution Magazine (Sep 03, 2009)
Spelunky, for every second that it’s running, shows you it cares. Usually through a period of twisted, systematic torture. Spelunky enjoys that. It’s just brilliant. I could witter on for pages longer, but it makes sense to leave at least a few of its many surprises intact. Of all the wonderful games released this year, Spelunky is the one I’ve kept coming back to, all the way through its beta, and intend to continue furiously playing for many more months. At just a few megabytes, there are no excuses not to play this. It’s a game that could well shape the indie landscape for years to come.

Combine the intoxicating flow with a catchy soundtrack and an undercurrent of dark humor, and you get a game that will devour many lazy afternoons.

Beneath some slight issues is a simply wonderful game. Challenging, addictive, thoughtful and beautiful, Spelunky is a stream of constant delight. The icing on the cake is that it's free, and a mere 8mb download from the link over on the right. There are no excuses not to play this. You have been warned.

The more you play Spelunky, the more carefully you will start considering your choices. Making the right decisions gives you that smug feeling again, and making the wrong ones will likely earn you a smack on the forehead at your own hand – and again this decision making which forms such an integral part of Spelunky will keep you playing, trying constantly to best your previous self’s efforts. And the best part? Spelunky is Free. FREE! What more could you possibly want? Well, if the vanilla Spelunky isn’t enough for you, there are also tons of mods available.

If you love the action and exploration of games like Terraria or Rogue Legacy you’ll like what Spelunky has to offer. The game is extremely easy to pick up and play but has so much hidden depth for you to explore and enjoy.
WindowsSoftonic (Sep 23, 2009)

Spelunky is a pick up and play experience but thankfully, one that's hard to put down.
WindowsTrue Game Headz (Mar 31, 2009)
All in all, “Spelunky” is a well-made game, with a consistent following. It’s a fair bit challenging for the average player, and includes new and exciting improvements with each version released. It’s a very addicting game; so addicting that you’ll wish you had more time to kill giant spiders than to play any other games in your library, and that’s after all the work you have! I feel sorry for you, but I can’t judge. I’m right there with you.
WindowsGame Kudos (May 14, 2010)
Spelunky isn't perfect. It's not the ultimate evolution of the platorming genre, or the ultimate evolution of anything really. In fact, it's the opposite. It's an origin story, casting your mind back to the days of bright, vibrant worlds with interesting characters and even more interesting settings. There's no part of it that truly stands out- the gameplay is interesting but flawed, the story is nonexistant and the graphics and sound are the exact opposite of cutting edge. However, somehow all these things combine to create a package that is fun, addictive, and ultimately memorable.

WindowsSoftonic (Nov 29, 2007)
Each level requires you to travel down to its bottom, collecting treasure along the way. Saving damsels in distress gains you a life, but means you can't carry other objects, like bombs and ropes that you need - so is it worth it? Retro and indie fans will love the way Spelunky plays with gaming conventions, and keeps being invented long after it should do, for a 10mb game! If you like platforming games, play Spelunky!
WindowsInsomnia (Nov 30, 2010)
So, to recap, for the benefit of the inevitably slow indie bums who might have somehow managed to get all the way down here: Spelunky offers no pleasure at all from killing things, since its controls are shit; no pleasure at all from maneuvering around its platforms, since they are randomly placed; no pleasure at all from navigating its stages, since they lack any sense of overarching unity or coherence; no pleasure at all from fighting its bosses, except if you've never fought bosses before (just as Mr. Yu has clearly never designed any of them before); no pleasure from seeing new enemies or "tilesets", since all of them are so universally uninspired and badly drawn that you are better off not seeing them at all: the game simply holds no visual or aural delights at all — and far too many downright ugly and annoying ones.
WindowsGameStar (Germany) (Feb, 2012)
