Friend or Foe will take anywhere from 8-12 hours depending on if you are out to get the Achievement points for perfectly completing each chapter. That means you find all the DNA, the Keystone, and the Keystone door to unlock each arena. The tricky thing here is that you never really know when the stage is going to end – at least the first time. There are so many doors you walk through that lead to the next section, but once you exit the level, if you are short on any of the requirements you will need to replay that level. The good news is that you only need to find what you missed, plus you can upgrade your characters before replaying and collect even more gold points for additional upgrades.

The game’s graphics are respectable but not great. The key characters from the Spider-Man movies including Spider-Man, Venom, Green (and New) Goblin, Sandman, and Doctor Octopus look like the their movie counterparts although they’re considerably more comic-book and cartoony in Friend or Foe. The various environments look different enough and boast a good amount of variety. But on a purely technical level the game isn’t going to win any awards since the main characters aren’t super-detailed, the enemies are somewhat generic, and the environments don’t show off any insanely detailed textures.

Spider-Man Friend or Foe avoids the open-ended gameplay altogether, returning the series to its early Activision brawler roots. The results are generally good, and long time fans of the series will definitely enjoy the trip down memory lane. But newer fans might feel a bit constricted by the linear design and the lack of the high-flying action the series has become famous for.

The easy difficulty setting and lighthearted tone might cause older gamers to scoff, but there's no denying that Spider-Man: Friend or Foe is a quality game that the whole family can enjoy. Like LEGO Star Wars, it's a great game for a child or younger sibling, and thanks to the multiplayer mode, you can enjoy playing it with them. Quality kids' games like this don't come along very often, so if you have a Spidey fan in your family, don't miss out on this one.

You begin each level in a S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier, where you can switch your partner and upgrade your characters through tokens found in the levels. You’ll unlock new characters in these levels that you can then go back and use in earlier levels. The game supports two-player cooperative multiplayer, and allows the second player to come in and out of the game at will since the AI will take over otherwise. You’ll also find a simple versus mode that lets you pair off any two of game’s characters.

Spider-Man: Friend or Foe’s story doesn’t make a whole lot of sense but provides just enough logic to explain why Spider-Man is joining forces with sworn enemies like the Green Goblin, New Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Sandman and Venom. Basically, Mysterio has placed mind control devices on Spider-Man’s classic enemies and retrieving meteor fragments from around the world to power his army of symbiote-powered phantoms. S.H.I.E.L.D. has to make sure this doesn’t happen and enlists Spider-Man to travel to the various locations, defeat the mind-controlled enemies, break their mind control and have them join you.

Since combat is the heart of the game, you are swarmed by dozens of enemies at one time and you and your selected ally unleash a flurry of combos. Combat moves are divided into several fashions. You have an attack button and a grab button which you can combine to unleash combos. I can confidently say a lot of work was put into the characters specific movements and fighting styles. Spidey pulls off some amazing moves even before he is fully upgraded. Since the game is designed for a younger audience, the combo system is very watered down, but the positive effect is that it is easy to pull off a lot of fantastic and colorful attacks that can only come from the Marvel universe.

Like those games, Friend or Foe is even more fun when played with a friend. At any point during the game, a second player can join in and help out as one of the many sidekick characters. Unfortunately, the game doesn't support online play, so your buddy will need to be over at your place if you want to play. Even if you don't have a friend joining in, a sidekick character will always follow you around. The computer AI is very competent, and actually does its fair share of fighting.

But alas, the game is not free of flaws. You know the first one: repetition. No brawler / beat-‘em-up can exist without it. Friend or Foe runs on a set path: select a level, defeat all the enemies, and make your way to the unmarked exit (you’ll know it’s over when the screen turns black – just like The Sopranos). That’s a couple steps back from Spider-Man 3, only because that game allowed you to select from a variety of missions at any point in the game. Friend or Foe boxes you into the one-mission-at-a-time setup.

Friend or Foe is a great ride but only for about 8-12 hours. This game was way too easy for adults and even kids will breeze through the entire game in a few days of casual gaming. The levels do seem endless but in a good way. There are so many hidden passages and doors that really encourage you to explore each level thoroughly rather than just rush through them. One sign of a good game is that when I wasn’t playing Friend or Foe I was thinking about playing it.

Spider-Man: Friend or Foe feels like an arcade-style beat-em-up. You punch, kick, throw, rinse and repeat, ad nauseam. Enemies are pretty easy to keep at bay, and the only real difficulty comes in with the mid-bosses and main bosses. It's not hard to figure out how to kill the next bad guy, it's just a matter of staying interested enough to do that. The incentive to do well is tokens. When you die, you lose tokens. You can obtain more tokens by keeping your combo level up. After each level, you can spend your tokens on character upgrades like power and health. Goodies like hidden artwork and Versus Arenas are hidden throughout the game, but they aren't exactly hard to find.

Overall, Spiderman: Friend or Foe is an average game with some above average moments. To a comic geek like me, the comic feel and bright graphics were a welcome change of pace. Above average voice acting and a fun story round out the presentation of the title. It won’t redefine any genres, but it’s a fun diversion. Lack of online co-op hurts and detracts from a pretty solid game.

Overall, Spider-Man: Friend or Foe is an incredibly well-made game that is a lot of fun, although it's a bit on the easy side. Whether you play through with a friend or solo, you'll find a solid title that's great for casual gaming sessions.

This game should be rated CT for Carpel Tunnel. The repetitive button-mashing on the PC is sure to cause some kind of long-term damage. As is with most "Games for Windows" titles, you can hook up your XBOX 360 controllers and let your thumbs do the work. The combo system may be repetitive on the fingers, but there are some really interesting combos and attacks for a game directed at the younger audience.

When I first started to play the game I was really enjoying the game but after a couple of stages I noticed the games biggest problem: repetition. All of the stages are setup almost exactly the same and the majority of the enemies are the same character models only with different colors and textures to match the stage. The combat, which is the biggest part of the game, also becomes a rerun of punching and kicking through countless waves of enemies. The progression of the levels is nearly identical for each stage: Show brief cut scene of enemies, take out enemies, cue another cut scene of enemies approaching, take out enemies, and show cut scene of harder enemies approaching. Even the boss battles are almost identical to each other which were really disappointing.

There's really not much else to the game beyond the fighting, either. There's a little bit of exploration, in that there are DNA samples and secret arenas scattered throughout the game, but more often than not you'll just stumble over them in the course of playing the game. Spidey can double-jump and use his webbing to swing over small gaps, but platforming is minimal. When you do die, be it at the hands of an enemy or from falling off a platform, the only penalty is that you'll lose a couple of tech tokens, a type of in-game currency that falls out of defeated enemies and smashed objects. You use the tech tokens to upgrade the abilities of Spider-Man and friends.

Xbox 360ActionTrip
Spiderman Friend or Foe for the Xbox 360 has a lot going for it and players can have a good time as long as they understand that this is a game that has been targeted towards a younger audience or the causal gamer. That does not mean the overall quality is low. Quite to the contrary, the graphics look great on my HDTV and voice overs and dialog are good (Some of the comments from the ships computer between missions had me laughing out loud several times in particular). Spiderman Friend or Foe does not take itself too seriously with its not too intense story and the robot enemies and that's the way you should approach it as well. There is certainly a place for a beat-em-up that is not too difficult to get into and play, but if you are expecting more depth and characters features, then you would be better off replaying Marvel Ultimate Alliance.

Although the Spider-Man movies have been credited with helping comic-book movies mature and take a more sophisticated turn, the problem with all of these complex, serious heroes and villains is, well, that they're all so complex and serious. They lose sight of the fact that Spider-Man is far more entertaining when he's wheelin' free and crackin' wise rather than stressing out about the whole "with great power" thing and generally being riddled with angst. The webslinger is in loose, smart-aleck form in Spider-Man: Friend or Foe, a beat-'em-up that doesn't get bogged down in character development. Instead, the game puts the focus on the kind of combat that's simple but showy, with an art style that reminds you that comic books shouldn't necessarily be so somber.

PlayStation 2GameSpot
The low level of challenge, the cartoon-inspired look, and a tone that favors humor over pathos certainly make it seem as if Spider-Man: Friend or Foe was designed with a younger, less sophisticated audience in mind, but for what it is, this is a well-crafted game.

Xbox 360GameSpot
It can be a real kick in the pants to fight alongside some of Spider-Man's greatest villains as well, and you can switch back and forth on the fly between controlling Spidey and his sidekick. When controlled by the artificial intelligence, your sidekick can take care of itself pretty well. As awesome as it might sound to finally get to play as these villains, the sidekicks simply don't have as many abilities as Spidey, which makes them inherently less interesting. This ends up limiting the appeal of the game's two-player support, although it's consequently less disappointing that there's no online play.

Xbox 360Defunct Games
If you're looking for a cute little action game for a younger gamer then you could do a whole lot worse than Spider-Man: Friend or Foe. The game is a fun two-player experience, full of great characters and some really good voice acting. I do question the game's price point and easy difficulty, but this would make for a really good weekend rental. There's some fun to be found in the second Spider-Man game of 2007, but not everybody is going to enjoy it as much as the younger set. There are a lot of really good ideas in this game; I wouldn't be opposed to seeing some sort of sequel that improves on all of the problems that bring this first installment down.

Many months ago, I saw a teaser for this game that made me think it would be a free-roamer like the other Spiderman games. This would have been great, but it unfortunately resembles a watered-down version of Marvel Ultimate Alliance (only with two players instead of four). It’s nothing more than an exercise in button mashing as you travel through bland environments and pummel countless nearly-identical baddies. Everything from the level design to the controls to the half-assed boss fights reminds me of a sub-par PSX title rather than a next-gen effort. Could have been a great free-roamer if the time and effort was put into it, but it’s not even worth a rental as-is.

Adding to the game’s lack of creative level design is the dumb enemy and ally AI that makes combat both a breeze and frustrating at the same time. In levels where you’ll be jumping from platform to platform be prepared to see your chosen sidekick slip to his or her death and waste precious Tech Tokens as they’re instantly resurrected. The Phantoms aren’t even very intelligent and while they do manage to wallop you good on occasion, it’s nothing teamwork and power-ups won’t fix. Really, this is a game you should be playing with a buddy since a friend won’t be making many of the same mistakes your ally makes during the game. Plus, you have the benefit of having a friend jump in at any time during the game and coordinate attacks together to chain some pretty mean character specific combos, making for a better cooperative experience.

Spider-Man: Friend or Foe is a simple beat-em-up game for kids. There’s something nostalgic about its style that makes it inviting and fun to play. While I recommend this game for younger audiences who love Spider-Man or comic books in general, the older crowd might require something meatier to hold their interest. For them, Spider-Man: Friend or Foe will be good for a brief rental, but not much more.

WiiWorth Playing
Activision's chance to capitalize on the Spider-Man license should not fall on deaf ears, though, because the simple mechanics and easy gameplay in Spider-Man: Friend or Foe are the perfect fit for any young Spider-Man fan or casual gamer looking for an action title for the Wii. During the holiday season, it will make a great gift under the Christmas tree, but it's not the superhero game with which most gamers will be looking to update their gaming libraries.
60
WiiGamers' Temple, The
The good news is that the game is aimed at younger Spider-Man fans who more than likely won’t question the story’s validity and plot holes that border on insanity (Harry Osborn is the “New Goblin” from the third Spider-Man film, yet Green Goblin, his supposedly dead father, is alive, well and still has access to Oscorp’s weapons and gadgets… what?). The game doesn’t just stop with tailoring the story for the younger set; the gameplay also has its sights set on the attention spans of 8-year-olds. Friend or Foe is, at its core, a simple yet mildly enjoyable beat ‘em up adventure. There isn’t a gamer on the planet that will have a problem breezing through this very easy game, and chances are their younger siblings won’t have too tough a time either.

Friend or Foe is a generic game which is salvaged by the co-op play. For new or young gamers this is a great title, but for those who have been around the block, there's nothing to see here.
60
PlayStation 2Gamernode
Once again, though, the simple combat really looms as a shadow over the game. Even with completely different characters, it always boils down to hitting melee a few times, maybe grabbing a guy or two, and if you feel like it using your special attack. Unlike similar titles where you have a plethora of skills to utilize and upgrade, Friend or Foe really limits your options.
60
Xbox 360Gamernode
If you've got a younger or new gamer at home, Friend or Foe is a good game to enjoy with them. The hop-in hop-out co-op gameplay and easy difficulty make this a winner for those not used to gaming in general. For those who have played similar games - or any games, for that matter - though, Friend or Foe is just too easy, and offers too little in terms of features and replay.

Spider-Man Friend or Foe falls short in just about every aspect. A sub-par story with abysmal level design and combat so easy it will make you want to run and cry to your Aunt May, will quickly turn any gamer away from this game. If you need something Spider-Man for this holiday season, turn elsewhere, for there is no fun to be had here, unless you are under the age of ten.
55
Xbox 360Kombo.com
Spider-Man: Friend or Foe is a good idea on paper, but in simplifying the engine they have used in their other Marvel-based games, Activision may have done the game too much of a disservice. The challenge is severely lacking and there is not much in the way of variety in terms of enemy characters. The focus is squarely on Spider-Man and his partners. Given the fact that you spend the entire duration of the game fighting minor variations on the same few enemies, the game loses much of its replay value.
54
Xbox 360Xbox360Achievements
Overall a repetitive and boring experience, the game is very much catered to young kids. After the disastrous Spider-Man 3 and now this pile of garbage, fans might have to wait until SM4 hits theatres at another shot. Rent it for achievements or buy it for your kids, but make sure you know what you're getting into.

I could see this game being the holy grail for younger players, as it's an easy game to pick up and play, with characters and situations you'd love to play with and in, and enough challenge to maintain interest. For older players though, the appeal is severely limited, thanks almost entirely to the weaknesses of the enemies. All they needed to do to make this a solid game would be to pull back on the playable characters and make the foes more interesting to battle. As it is, it's a fun couple of hours, but hardly enough to engage most gamers. A rental will answer any questions you have about the game, and will help you kill an afternoon.

Jammer Spidey, jammer.

The action-adventure brawler, developed by Next Level Games and published by Activision, started out with a unique idea - that Spidey would battle a horde of mysterious baddies with the help of his sworn Marvel-universe enemies. Ultimately, Spider-Man Friend or Foe feels like a lazy attempt to cash in on the character's license. The game is obviously geared most toward the younger set, but even kids like a bit of challenge, right? Despite its downfalls, the game has its moments. Hero attacks are fun to see, many of the upgrades are well-designed and exciting to watch, and the voice acting is redeeming – during battles, we found ourselves longing to return to the "helicarrier" just so we could hear the ship computer's jokes. But mostly, we just longed to be done with Spider Man: Friend or Foe.

And that's what's ultimately so frustrating about Spider-Man: Friend or Foe. Some of the web upgrades are actually fun and rewarding to use, but they feel completely unnecessary because the gameplay demands nothing of the player. As a test, we replayed an entire stage in the first level of the game using nothing but a single attack button. We sailed through with a yawn. As another test, while trying out the game's two-player co-op mode, we took Spidey and our chosen foe/partner, Silver Sable, to a cliff-top stage in the game's island-themed level. The predictable number of predictable-looking Phantom enemies spawned around us, and we set our controllers down, let the game continue running, and walked away for 30 minutes.

Seeing the variety of characters in Friend or Foe all under one banner is nice, but really offers no real variety between any of them. Playing through with the same few characters is not very difficult at all. The battle arena is average at best, bringing the button mashing to head to head gameplay. I find it very difficult for telling anyone to rent Friend or Foe, let alone purchase. Such a blatant rip off of Marvel Ultimate Alliance does not even deserve a spot on your shelf.

Spider-Man Friend or Foe is a surprisingly poor product considering all that the developers needed to do was effortlessly copy someone else's character design onto someone else's game design. They could have been done and dusted with an uninspired but playable Marvel franchise in time for cookies and comic books. Instead, this offering has little redeemable features and is better side-stepped.

A game like this had potential to be more than just button masher for the kids. Perhaps Next Level Games wanted to add more puzzle elements or a variety of enemy encounters, but somewhere down the line it was decided to stick to the basics and play it safe. The only hope is that some young kids will get some level of joy out of a game that is barely a game at all. The only saving grace for this beat’em up is the fact that it has the Spiderman license attached to it. For some, that may be enough to warrant attention.

At least last year's Marvel Ultimate Alliance was exhaustive attempt at packing in more content than any previous isometric brawler. Having so many different characters and permutations (not to mention online play) offered a fair incentive to carry on, even when your brain was being numbed by the inherent repetition of the gameplay. By comparison, Friend or Foe is limp and insipid, with a mere fraction of the features on offer in Raven's surprisingly decent effort.
