Description

Spitfire: The Battle of Britain is a vertical-scrolling shooter that gives the player control over an RAF Spitfire aircraft battling against the German air forces in World War II. The game starts in Britain, but ends up visiting various landscapes including France and Germany. The player can move the plane to the left or the right and shoot the main weapon in order to destroy the German fighters. Destroyed enemies can sometimes drop power-ups such as rapid fire, heavy calibre, and extra gun pods. Up to four extra gun pods can be installed on the plane. Besides enabling the plane to fire multiple shots simultaneously, they offer additional protection. The heavy calibre gun shoots a more powerful missile that can penetrate multiple enemy planes and destroy them.

The player starts the game with three lives, but can get more by picking the rare extra Spitfire power-up. While the enemy aircraft are harmless, their guns are not, and a single missile shot by them is enough to destroy one of the player's Spitfires.
