THQ and Heavy Iron Studios team up once again for The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie. The game, based on the upcoming film of the same name, is a decent platformer that follows what I assume is going to be the plot of the movie rather well.

The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie is a very good and well polished game, the developer has obviously not just expected the game to sell on its licensed characters but instead on the quality of the game underneath all that, and there is definitly a good solid platform game here. Older platformer fans may not be gripped by the games cartoony style as much as younger gamers and may find more enjoyment in some of the darker platformers out there such as the excellent Prince of Persia games, but nevertheless the latest SpongeBob title is a solid, enjoyable and genuinely funny experience.

The SpongeBob Squarepants Movie is an excellent game, and one which makes prime use of its movie tie-in, very successfully. Because of the slight difficulty in some of the jumping sequences, and the long races, this is probably a game better for older kids and/or more experienced gamers. Younger players will be better off with the recently released Spyro: A Hero's Tail, or SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom, which are both easier games.

Instead of settling on oversimplified gameplay, The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie delivers an entertaining (and oftentimes challenging) mix of platform and driving sequences. Controls feel responsive and the camera rarely hinders your view of the action. And the humor of the show practically seeps out of every clamshell and bed of kelp you cross. The game uses a majority of the voice work from the show and makes the most of the visual style making up the SpongeBob universe.

The funkified whimsy behind SpongeBob SquarePants elevated it from standard cartoon status into a pop culture phenomenon. It sits right next to The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on that shelf of screwy cartoons with enough personality and charm to warrant mass production of toys, movies and all the paraphernalia that marketing mavens could conjure.

Did you ever notice that every generation these days seems to have a hit cartoon that no other generation seems to understand? When I was young, we had Ren & Stimpy. After that, came South Park. Nowadays kids, along with some adults, are foaming at the mouth over this Spongebob Squarepants, an innocent yellow sea sponge with an ugly tie and a good heart.

THQ continues its monopoly on children’s games for the PS2 through its shrewd partnership with the Nickelodeon network. This isn’t to say that they don’t deserve their success. After all, they do make some pretty good games based on the aforementioned shows. Most recently, thanks to the developers at Heavy Iron studios, they have produced another good title in SpongeBob Squarepants: The Movie.

Even though the controls can get you yelling at the screen, the overall gameplay is quite enjoyable. The humor and fun mini-games reel you in, and the added bonuses of unlockable treats such as trailers and costumes keep you playing more. They made a good attempt at making an enjoyable platformer for SpongeBob fans which is always refreshing from the hordes of junk movie-title games.

While there are plenty more impressive platform games out there, for its target audience this one is a winner. If you or your kid enjoys Spongebob this one will keep them entertained for a good long while. There’s enough variety in gameplay and hilarious bits to warrant recommending this title.

The ludicrously lengthy titled SpongeBob Square Pants has been charming children and parents alike since, what seems to be, the beginning of time. The delightful array of characters and vibrant storylines make for an adventure like no other, and alongside the release of the SpongeBob SquarePants Movie comes the video game. However, to much surprise, despite the seemingly consistent failure of TV show/movie inspired games, SBSP is a tantalising romp that breaks the boundaries of target audiences.

THQ and Heavy Iron Studios attempted to mimic the SpongeBob movie-going experience through a video game that takes players to several locations from the film. Battle For Bikini Bottom lived up to the show – does this game have what it takes to live up to the film?

Of course, there are areas which could have been improved. The twixt-level cutscenes consist of stills from the movie, which is not exactly enthralling, although the amusing French commentator does inject a bit of entertainment into them. The graphics, though usually bright and interesting enough, are occasionally a bit ragged. And the loading times are somewhat questionable. And yes, in the end it's rather standard fare with an amusing license slapped on. But I don't think that there are many people on this Earth who would presume The Spongebob Squarepants Movie to be some great gaming opus. For what it is, though - a game aimed at children who like Spongebob enough to go and see the film - it's worthy of commendation.

Kids today just don't realise how lucky they are growing up with such surreal cartoon fineries as Spongebob Squarepants. As an avid watcher of satellite television cartoon channels, I would class it (along with Fairly Odd Parents, Invader Zim and Samurai Jack) as one of the best non-adult specific cartoons ever made. The fact that it came 28th in Channel 4's recent '100 Greatest Cartoons' production suggests that many other people would agree with me - pre-adolescent or otherwise.

Spongebob Squarepants. A sponge. Who likes pants. Who’s called Bob. Who lives in a pineapple under the sea. Who has a friend called Patrick. Who is a starfish. Simple, really. This loveable sea dwelling sponge though has somehow managed to catapult himself from kids cartoon hero to global idol in the space of just a few short years, attracting a huge following along the way. Big in the UK, even bigger in America, there's a sudden craze with all things sponge in pants. The Spongebob Squarepants show has rapidly become one of the biggest phenomenons of cable and digital TV, and it's no surprise to see a movie not too far off into the distance.
