It's just a squishing short of being a great game, but I was pleasantly surprised with this DS SpongeBob. Developer Tantalus came up with a beautiful 3D engine to make for one of the better-looking games on DS, and publisher THQ put enough love and support into this to make it last long and stand out from the flood of rush-job platformers parents have the choice of this holiday season. I could have done with some higher production values -- some animation sequences would have been nice to pepper the story, and we miss all those great character voices. A little more of that fun touchscreen play and those adventure elements would have gone a long way as well. Other than that, The Yellow Avenger is an easy recommendation for fans of the SquarePanted one, and even those who don't get SpongeBob might like to float around in this game for a little while.

A cute and fun game that is sure to please most families, especially fans of the show.

There are plenty of problems in Bikini Bottom and they're all retold, again and again, inside SpongeBob SquarePants: The Yellow Avenger. Combining some mildly interesting, yet highly recycled, platforming with light adventure elements provides a tolerable diversion for fans of the series, but it's nothing to get excited about. And for those who have no clue about what this squishy yellow fellow is all about there's no reason to pick this up. Spend that cash on a few of the DVDs instead.

The graphics in Spongebob Squarepants: The Yellow Avenger are average, but admittedly they accomplish the job well enough. Although the experienced PSP gamer will notice it's a little behind times. I really have to hold any negative judgment because we know they aren't going to spend ultra hours developing Spongebob like some of their other franchise players. It's a "kids" game so they would say, and we all know the production values are usually lowered for those type of games. For details they have it pretty much nailed, the main characters look close to their TV counterparts and the world seems to be matched equally.

He's square. He's yellow. He lives in a pineapple under the sea, but most importantly, he can absorb water faster than the leading quilted picker-upper (guaranteed!). SpongeBob SquarePants is Nick's king of wisecracking, bringing the silliest of intelligent humor to gamers with titles like SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom. His humorous friends and villains made for great game characters, and his environments were as fun to explore on PlayStation 2 as they were to watch on the show.
