It’s a good game overall, especially for people who like strategy games but aren’t very fond of the frantic pace that something like Starcraft brings to the table. Conquest also lacks the complexity of a tabletop trading card game or series-based board game, which is fine by me. And there are plenty of reasons to keep playing: by completing the campaign mode as each faction, you will unlock a neutral faction for the one-shot "Skirmish" mode (which is basically a fast-paced version of the main game). Star Trek: Conquest isn’t for everyone, but I found it to be very fun.

Star Trek Conquest isn't for everybody, but no Star Trek game ever has been. Sadly, Star Trek Conquest lacks a multiplayer option, but the game would be a lot less fun if you always knew your opponent's position and strategy anyhow. If you like strategy games and miss seeing Star Trek on your television then Star Trek Conquest is definitely worth your time.

Conquest does one thing, and does it well. Freed from all the TV actors and even the characters themselves, the game instead just rests comfortably in providing a tried-and-true game of strategy with enough variety and differences in play style to make every race feel like they can tackle the game differently. Granted, the limited scope means you won't be able to play the game for marathon sessions, but it's perfect in few-hour bursts.

Star Trek Conquest is a mixed bag. It offers good turn-based strategy fun while missing the mark on its skirmish/arcade battles. The minimalist presentation of graphics and user interface might bother some of you, but at the core of this game is some nice fun for Star Trek fans or strategy buffs. The game clocks in at only $15, so that's a plus for those hunting down a sweet bargain.

Star Trek Conquest is an interesting game to say the least. The core game design is fun, but the amount of options, polish, and multiplayer (or entire lack thereof) brings the experience down more than a few notches. On PS2 the title is $15, and as a “beyond budget” title we could see Star Trek’s appeal. On Wii, you’re asked to pay double the price for a game that offers one real mode, a bonus combat sandbox, and nothing beyond that. If the designers had a chance to big with the Conquest series we could see some serious potential here, but as it stands there’s just too little to justify the price tag, and only hardcore Trekkies and hardcore strategy fans need apply.

'Star Trek: Conquest' ist solide Brettspielstrategie mit ein paar guten Ideen, denen aber der Feinschliff fehlt. Immerhin sind die Spielidee und das optische Design sauber umgesetzt worden. Allerdings fliegen die Fans hier mit äußerst wenig Umfang in gar nicht so unendliche Weiten – als Budget-Titel ist das gerade noch akzeptabel.

I want to start this review off with the notice that this Star Trek game does not let you play as Kirk, Picard, Janeway, or even that dude Sisko. Scott Bakula? Nope. Instead, you'll pick up the role of one of six races and fight to the death in a collection of star systems. And that's pretty much it.

It would not have taken much effort to make the minor improvements necessary to elevate Conquest from a mediocre title to something worthy of the Star Trek brand. The presence of a true campaign mode containing even a minor overarching plot would improve the play experience significantly, and adding in some favorite main characters from the series (instead of a slew of secondary chumps for admirals) might appease the Trekkie crowd. The limited gameplay itself is solid enough to warrant a few hours of space combat, but as a Star Trek title, Conquest simply doesn't live up to expectation.

If the Wii iteration carried the same price tag as its PS2 cousin I could definitely recommend picking this one up. However, as it stands the price is a bit much for what you get here. Throw in a lack of any kind of multi-player and you have a game that is fun for an afternoon and not much beyond that. Hardcore fans of the series should give it a look, as long as you can get past the out-of-place story, and fans of the strategy genre will find a little solace here, but everyone else need not apply as Star Trek: Conquest is too simple and too bland to warrant its price tag.

As a turn-based strategy, Star Trek: Conquest isn't all that bad. I found the enemy A.I. to be a lot harder than I would have liked, and most of the time the game felt very lopsided. I liked the fact that resource gathering, while not completely gone, wasn't as detailed as other games from the genre. Still Conquest is not a strategy game for Star Trek fans, it is a Star Trek game for strategy fans. Novice players in this genre simply need not apply.

If you put aside the ridiculous choice of time to be releasing a Star Trek game, that has seen nothing new happen with the franchise beyond the postponed Star Trek: Online. And the up coming film featuring young Kirk and Spock, which I might add is not the audience of this game (Next Generation). Putting aside the bizarre lack of content, and the fact that each time you play you feel like your setting up a “quick match” on most other games, and the fact you achieve relatively nothing of worth when you win. This game is a sound bit of fun for a Trek fan but I better not find out you have been spending above 20 pounds on what feels like a budget release.

Star Trek: Conquest is an enjoyable strategy game which needs more depth and variety to be truly arresting. It does what it does well, however developer 4J Studios have succeeded in making the game perhaps too simplistic, and definitely lacking any narrative pull or long-term appeal. It will no doubt appeal to fans of the series who relish Klingons and the Dominion, but for those without interest in the franchise there just isn’t quite enough here to attract.

With six different races in the game, and each one playing differently to the others, there’s enough scope here to keep hardened strategy fans playing for a few hours at least. Although the gameplay is rather limited when placed against a similar full-price game, at under £20 there's little to complain about. If you want a sci-fi strategy title with elements of Sim City, Command & Conquer and some action thrown in too this is, at the very least, worth a rent.

There is a dearth of new Star Trek content these days, but games like Conquest aren't the answer. The concept here is a decent one, combining turn-based galactic conquest strategy with real-time battles. However, both elements are in pretty terrible shape.

Star Trek: Conquest is a classic example of a great concept that doesn;t live up to it's potential; there are some very interesting ideas on display but, like the vastness of space itself, they remain largely unexplored. While the game initially gives an impression of great variety, the actual gameplay is very limited, as the small number of ships, structures and upgrade options, combined with the samey look of each star system and battle, causes tedium to set in fairly quickly. If you're a Trekker then you may gain some enjoyment from taking command of the fleets of various races, but there's nothing here to draw in anyone who isn't a fan of the TV shows. Beam me up, Scotty - I've got better things to do than carry on playing this.

Anyway, yes, Star Trek Conquest punches gatling-phaser holes in purist Trekdom all over the place, but it still works on its own humble, low-budget, strategy board-game level. Space-warts and all.

If you're not already a Trek fan, you're probably not reading this and almost definitely will not play the game -- no tragedy there. However if you spend large chunks of free time debating the relative merits of Captain Picard and Captain Kirk, there's probably a teensy bit of enjoyment to wring out of this bare-bones game. Just do yourself a favor and pick up the cheaper PS2 version (or really, just rent it).

WiiGame Chronicles
Star Trek: Conquest was way too rushed and seems for all practical purposes a quick cash in on the intense popularity of the Wii console at the time this was being made. The game is pretty average or a bit below and is not worth the full price but it does play decent even though it does not have much depth. Although it plays well it is poorly designed overall and there were no finishing touches or polishing to the final product.

Regardless - this is a classic example of a solid game suffering from poor execution. I can't recommend this title at anything but the lowest of price points, or as a rental for someone who has already beaten Mario Galaxy and just about any other first party Nintendo game. The Star Trek franchise fails to live up to even the lowest of expectations as a game, and anyone interested in the ultimate fate of the U.S.S. Enterprise will have to wait until the next film is released in 2009.

Star Trek: Conquest has the look and feel of a free online-based RTS offering, but without the whole online part. The game's Achilles' heel, of course, is its complete lack of depth. The manual combat system is unusable and a quick look at your race's strengths and weaknesses gives you all the strategy you'll need to dispose of your opponents. The visuals are sub-par, the gameplay is shallow and you can't play against your friends. Even as a budget title Conquest is a failure, so my recommendation is to boldly go elsewhere for your next Star Trek fix.

Which just about sums Star Trek Conquest up. The strategy element makes the first level of Advance Wars look like Kasparov versus Deep Blue. There's not even a story to follow. Once you've won a campaign, all there is to do is set different variables or pick a new race and start again. The skirmish mode lets you skip the strategy bit and just shoot spaceships, but there are much better spaceship-shooting games out there. Even at GBP 19.99 Star Trek Conquest isn't worth the asking price, even if you're a "Trekkie" (or "Spockstic" as I prefer). The game only offers a couple of hours' entertainment and they'd be better spent watching the TV show or one of the films, or trawling the Internet for erotic Wesley Crusher fan fiction.

Technically, Conquest could be worse, since it loads quickly and has no real technical issues. But there is simply no reason to play this game or spend the money on it. Whether you put that time and money towards someone's indie strategy title, "Star Trek" episodes, or just giving up on this gaming thing and buying a bus ticket to Des Moines, you will have a better time than if you buy and play Conquest. It's an offensively bad use of a cherished license, and it's an offensively simple and thoughtless strategy game.
