Besides these minor quirks, SC2 is a deep and complex foray into the Star Trek universe. The sheer amount of acronyms for the different spaceships alone is a testament to that fact. The campaign against the ISC is fun and engaging, although it would have been nice to see the Borg show up but Paramount likes to parcel out their license material among the different developers. The Klingons, for example, are always at war with the Federation, which isn't really the truth on the television show at least. Just as the television franchise is hitting a speed bump with Voyager, the Star Trek franchise in gaming seems to be improving dramatically. Titles like SC2 go a long way in solidifying the Star Trek name in the annals of PC gaming.

Should you get SFC2? If you enjoyed the first one, you’ll definitely enjoy the second. It enhances everything that made the original SFC enjoyable. If you’re not a Star Trek fan, or don’t like terribly complex games, SFC2 may not be for you. Be prepared for a rich, complex, and very rewarding game if you get it.

In this real-time conversion of the turn-based board game, Starfleet Battles, players control fleets of up to three ships that can do just about anything the ships did in the shows and movies. Transporters, shields, shuttles, weapon systems, and engineering are all available in a heavily icon-laden system. Volume 2 offers a higher level of replayability with a campaign mode in which players are free to roam about the galaxy, taking random missions as well as the occasional scripted scenario as they attempt to earn prestige for better ships. Fans of the original will not be disappointed.

Starfleet Command 2 is one of those games that you could spend several months playing and still not have mastery over every aspect. The amount of detail present in this title is staggering, from the complex interface to the convoluted plotlines and the history of the ISC member races. Taking inspiration from the naval-style battles that characterized the original, Taldren streamlined the gameplay and added more ships, races, weapons and miscellaneous options without causing things to become convoluted. Though it follows a path already forged by its predecessor, Starfleet Command 2 should encourage even the most lighthearted Trekker to step up and take a seat on the bridge of a Roddenberry-inspired starship.

Starfleet Command 2 is a satisfying real time strategy game. If you are a fan of Star Trek and enjoy these kinds of game, you shouldn't miss it. Even for the general public (myself included), Starfleet Command 2 contains enough features to warrant giving it a try. Once Dynaverse 2 is up and running, Starfleet Command 2 will be an accurate simulation of the worlds of Star Trek.

If you're a hardcore Star Trek fan or are looking for a challenging tactical naval space combat game, or are a fan of Starfleet Battles, Starfleet Command II is your cup of tea. It's deep, lengthy, and has a lot to offer to those who are willing to take the time to appreciate it.

The actual tactical combat in Starfleet Command Volume II is not only one of the best Star Trek games to date, but also one of the year's best strategy games. However, if you were to take the "Volume II" out of that sentence and go back in time one year, you would simply be describing the original Starfleet Command. In other words, there really isn't much new in the second game - just a host of tweaks and improvements which, taken together, don't really justify the release of a whole new game one year later. The developers should be proud that they were able to make improvements to a game that was really, really good in the first place and to manage to make the resulting game be really, really good. But with such a great core game engine to build from, they could have concentrated on bringing the campaign up to the high standard of the tactical game instead of making only minor adjustments to everything.

If there was ever a game made exclusively for hardcore Star Trek fans, this is it. If a Star Wars game was released that came close to the amount of realism involved in this title I’d be on it like white on rice.

Regardless of the politics that govern when a publisher releases a game, Starfleet Command II is clearly not ready for prime time. Abundant bugs, unbalanced campaign prestige, and a non-functional multiplayer campaign all mar an otherwise classic game. The new features that do function add a lot to the game; will Interplay and Taldren reveal this game's untapped potential in future patches? It's impossible to say. For now you'll have to settle for glimpses of what might have been.

Starfleet Command 2 really, really doesn't deserve a score this low. However, the bugs we faced were just too intrusive for us to rate it any higher. Yes, it is still playable, but the bugs and flaws push it below the "average" mark for games nowadays. If Interplay decides to release a Star Trek Pack or other discount (and patched) version, we can see ourselves giving SFC2 a full-blown recommendation. Real hardcore fans will of course be able to look past the game's faults but for most of us, the bugs and scattered design problems are too much to deal with and there are better products to spend our money on.

Despite the flat and uninspiring campaign. STARFLEET COMMAND 2 still boasts some of the best starship combat strategy available anywhere. Unfortunately, the single most important element that was to distinguish the sequel from its predecessor is very much a work in progress. If you’ve never played the original. STARFLEET COMMAND 2 is worth the purchase price. However, veterans of the previous game will find little extra gameplay to justify the expense. Save your money for a new set of Spock ears.
