Star Wars: Battlefront II surpasses the first in just about every way possible. The game has more depth, a better single player mode, and new in-game actions. Pandemic and LucasArts have outdone themselves.

WindowsAll Game Guide
Battlefront II is a superior game to its predecessor in almost every respect. It's almost as if the designers at LucasArts took every fan and reviewer complaint and addressed them, in the process creating an enjoyable game not to be missed by fans of either first-person shooters or Star Wars.

PlayStation 2Worth Playing
In the final analysis, Star Wars Battlefront II is far superior to the game which spawned it in all areas. The landscapes look great, the character system provides some depth of play as well as a sense of worth, and the space combats are the "twitchiest" I've seen without being uncontrollable.

If you were a fan of the previous Star Wars Battlefront game, you owe it to yourself to pick up this far superior sequel. Actually, scratch that. If you're a Star Wars fan in general, head out to your local game store to get your hands on a copy of Star Wars Battlefront II. LucasArts has added a ton of new features to an already great game, resulting in one of the best Star Wars games ever. The Force is strong with this one, indeed.

The first Battlefront game didn’t offer much in terms of a rewarding single-player experience, and in this regard, the presentation in this sequel is still lacking, consisting entirely of grainy stock footage and dialogue over shoddy in-game sequences. While it would be nice to see George Lucas empty out his pockets to liven up this aspect of the game, the story that is conveyed is quite interesting and loaded with material that Star Wars fans have been dying to learn about. The missions in this mode no longer solely revolve around capturing points on the map. You’ll find yourself undertaking protect, destroy, and assassination missions as well. All told, the single player component now offers roughly seven to eight hours of must-play material.

But there are some new upgrades that help round out the experience. Most notably, ship-to-ship space combat that can occur between planetary battles. The notion of hopping into an X-Wing, shooting down a flight of TIE fighters and then boarding an enemy Star Destroyer to disable its shields is one that has been deeply rooted in many a Gen X'ers mind. This is now possible, and while space combat is not as refined or complex as say X-Wing Alliance, it opens up the game beyond ground-based combat. One wonders why it took so long for a Star Wars game to comprehensively feel like Star Wars.

Star Wars: Battlefront II has so much going for that it’s almost possible to forget its flaws. Most are negligible, but one stands out. The battles, no matter how entertaining they are, have been presented to us many times before. They’ve been presented in Star Wars games, in war games, and in other action titles over the past five years. Protect your troops, defend your base, find an important item, etc.

If it’s more of the same action-packed battles you crave, Star Wars Battlefront II for the Xbox will not disappoint. With more playable maps, including the excellent space combat battles, and the inclusion of heroes and villains makes this a particularly satisfying Star Wars games fans will love.

If Battlefront II seems like it's treading over familiar ground, that's because it is. If you already played the first game, you won't be surprised to see the same maps in this one. You'll keep fighting on the icy wastes of Hoth, the steamy swamps of Dagobah, and among the buildings in the dusty town of Mos Eisley. Some incremental feature improvements, like the new single-player campaign modes, playable Jedi, and space battles have also been tossed in for good measure. While there haven't been any radical changes made since the first game, Battlefront II remains a worthwhile choice for Star Wars fans looking for a good team-based shooter.

This is as good as that. To maintain competitive nature of the game the numbers of heroes are restricted to one per side. Well it’s anyone’s guess that one is enough to make the enemy go bizarre. Although all the game is well built and exciting, when it comes to pointing out the moment of the game there are a few prizes to guess it. It’s the point at which when you manage to sneak into an enemy fighter and just wait for the enemy to thin out and then cautiously sneaking out with it. It’s really thrilling to see the enemy confused when you start attacking with their vehicle. This hits the enemy hard and by the time the enemy understands this, the player can do a lot of damage and create a lot of havoc in the enemy camp. If players face some problems with fighters, they will just plainly hide it behind a rock, fix it and resume fighting. Really a thrilling experience!

The new space dogfights are decent, but it's not like you've all of sudden stepped into the Rogue Squadron series. Levels are fairly short, and you're never that absorbed into things before a poorly-compressed cutscene pops up to introduce the next mission. Even a faceless clone yearns for a life of significance every now and again.

All in all, Star Wars: Battlefront II is more of the same from last year, with a few additions tacked on for good (and not so good) measure. If you loved the first game, you will be in familiar territory once again… the feeling of déjà vu hits hard on the maps you’ve played before. Battlefront II is also a great way to recreate those childhood fantasies of being smack in the middle of Hoth, Mos Eisley, Dagobah and the like, but in order to really experience the fun the game can offer you will need either a bunch of friends to play with or an Xbox LIVE account.

I know what some might be saying, "Joel you gave Battlefront II the same exact score as the original Battlefront". And what I would say to you is you're right, I did. And I did this because I truly believe that the developers did a nice job of upgrading the game in many areas. But on the same token, I don't think they upgraded everything enough to take it to the next level. Should Battlefront fans go run out and buy this game? My answer is try this game as a rental first and see if you like the changes. If you do, you will have yourself a game that you will probably playing for months on in.

Even with the spotty AI, rehashed maps and sounds, and the been there, done that feeling this game is still one of the best online experiences currently available. With up to 32 player matches, the ability to use bots, and the incredible amount of customizable options this game will be played for a long time to come. If the first game didn’t impress you, this one won’t change your mind. However if you loved the first one, you will certainly appreciate all that Pandemic has added to its sequel. So if you meet all the criteria you need to own this game, it is more than worth its weight in Republic Credits.

The dark side rears its ugly head in only a few minor technical areas: Some of the maps, particularly the lush Yavin 4 and Felucia, suffer from heavy lag, and the game occasionally locks up or crashes outright during bigger confrontations. But overall, as a thrice-burned Star Wars fan, I'm pleasantly surprised by this game's quality. Ironically, it debuted on the same day as the Episode III DVD; by comparison, Battlefront II makes you wish Mr. Lucas had let the game designers have a crack at his screenplays, too.

Basically, Star Wars Battlefront II improves on every aspect of the original Battlefront. Playable hero characters are the flashiest and most memorable improvement, but the new combat modes and troop types help make this a vast enhancement over the first title in the series. There is a real gritty edge to the gameplay, all with no learning curve, thanks to a helpful training mode and a slow-starting story mode. For fans of the original, this is a must-buy title. Anybody who wasn't totally won over by the first Battlefront should definitely check out the sequel. However, if you hated the title before, there's too little changed in Star Wars Battlefront II to make you a fan of the series.

It sounded like the coolest idea ever. Still, Lucasarts delivered on its promise. It let you play as either the Rebel Alliance or the Galactic Empire in a series of epic, multiplayer confrontations spanning famous Star War locales. The game, of course, was the original Star Wars Battlefront. By all accounts it was a particularly huge game. And it wasn't just its scope or attention to detail, either, it was the fact the whole shebang was multiplayer and online ready.

Star Wars Battlefront II is another solid online shooter that sacrifices depth for dynamism and tactics for ultra-violence. Armed with a healthy Internet connection, this game will hold at bay the forces of boredom for months. Switch off that connection, though, and witness the biggest turn to the lame side since the new Star Wars movies. Get or get not, there is no try.

All in all, if you're looking for an engaging multiplayer experience, I'd sincerely stick to more refined shooters like Battlefield 2. It delivers so much more in terms of gameplay. Still, if you are really-truly hardcore about the Star Wars universe and you scoff at the "silly nuts and bolts weapons" and thing halogen lights are strangely appealing, with a patch here and there, Battlefront 2 just *might* be the experience you are looking for.

It's because of this that we're inclined to rate Battelfront II a considerable amount lower than its father. Of course, we must still consider that the underlying mechanics behind online shooting and the collaborative use of Star Wars branded vehicles is still obviously decent. So we must then come to a nice and healthy 7.0.

Battlefront II for the PSP boasts a lot of ways to control your Star Wars experience, whether it be co-op battles over ad hoc wireless, the chance to down Gungans as Boba Fett, or control Jedi over a variety of maps. Ironically, the one thing that taints the experience is the controls. Although it gives you four ways to configure them, none of the options made me feel really comfortable. And for an action game like this, if you don’t like the controls, you aren’t gonna get your kills. This Battlefront II doesn’t have the driving story of the console version, but it does give you the predominant experience – including the not super-fun space battles. There is a certain charm to this game, but it’s basically a big Jedi mind trick.

While Battlefront was a dream realized for many Star Wars fans, Battlefront II is an odd case of déjà vu that boasts two major additions: Jedi and starships. Conceptually, those bonuses complete the Star Wars mystique and lend a much greater degree of authenticity to the game -- even eliciting a deep sense of satisfaction if only because we finally can wield lightsabers and fly starships. Now even though these additional options are granted, their implementation is flawed. And so more than its predecessor, the faults and quirks of Battlefront II stand out and become glaring because the new adds feel unpolished while the old gripes manage to rear their heads for a second time. In a product that should have remedied issues of the past without adding to them, this is a problem.

"Sequel The Best Selling Star Wars Game of All Time." That's what the back panel of Star Wars: Battlefront II proclaims. Best selling? Of all time? This seems off tto me, yet NPD numbers seem to prove it true, at least across all platforms. But it seems strange, with so many classic Star Wars games that have popped up over the years. X-Wing;Tie Fighter, which of course begat X-Wing Vs. Tie Fighter; the classic Super Star Wars series for the SNES; Shadows of the Empire, one of the few good Nintendo 64 games for the first dry months of the console's lifespan – even budget classics like Yoda Stories (not the Gameboy version!) should have sold quite a few copies to curious fans.

These guys sure know what Star Wars fans want. In the first three single-player levels of Battlefront II, you get to exterminate Gungans, Jawas, and Ewoks. Smart. But guess what else you'll get to fight in those first few stages? The control scheme. The PSP just isn't made for shooters, and this is one of the most ambitious around.

Star Wars Battlefront II for the PSP is simply the Death Star. It's an immensity that is chock-full of destructive power, symbolized by the multiple re-creations of the biggest and baddest battles in Star Wars history. Its seemingly flawless exterior is made up of snazzy graphics and authentic pewpewpew laser sound effects. Yet, for all that is good about it, like the original Death Star, it has one flaw that slipped through construction, a flaw that is significant enough to blow the entire thing apart. That flaw is the terrible framerate during multiplayer. If you're into single player, the game is actually quite good...

Overall Battlefront II, like its predecessor, is decidedly mediocre. Being able to play as a Jedi is definitely one of its strongest qualities, but it really doesn't make up for a really lackluster massive battlefield shooter. While it has many different gameplay dynamics, they aren't always utilized properly and rarely can turn the tide of battle, a burden that the player must often shoulder. With a group of friends this can be a really fun game; unfortunately that scenario isn't all that common. So if you were a fan of the first game, this one is definitely worth a shot once the price gets a little lower.

Bof bof.

One major new feature is the ability to engage in space battles, but these aren't the least bit fun. Destroying a huge battleship by mindlessly pelting its hull is shallow, and traveling between ships is a tedious process. In fact, these space battles are so worthless that the game actually gives you the option to skip them altogether! And you will. The single player experience is only mildly amusing, and the multiplayer split-screen mode is unsatisfying. There's plenty of eye candy and cool concepts abound, but Battlefront 2 does a poor job of putting you "in the game".
