Star Wars: Battlefront

Overall, the game is great. People who love star wars or even those who don’t will probably dig this game. But if you hate battlefield 1942 style games, you probably won’t like this one.

Everything about this game screams Star Wars, from John Williams’ gorgeous score right down to the menus. Options abound as you can even choose between first and third person perspectives. And trust me; if you think the default third person view is cool, it ain’t got nothin’ on the first person view. I was blown away as a flood of memories came back to me when I jumped inside a turret on Hoth and saw an AT-AT lumbering towards our shield generator in that familiar, blue-tinted binocular view. It just felt so real I couldn’t help but laugh giddily until the first laser came tearing at me from the walker’s guns. Yipes! Despite the amount of options, the menu systems are easily navigable, proving that Pandemic spent some time on this game getting it right.

Battlefront has a lot to offer, and if you're an on-line gamer, it's an even sweeter deal. Star Wars Battlefront plunges you into the Star Wars universe like no other game can.

Mit Battlefront hat mir LucasArts einen Jugendtraum erfüllt. Endlich kann ich mich mit den beiden Skywalkers und den anderen Krieg-der-Sterne-Promis in epische Gefechte stürzen. Vor allem die Schlacht um Hoth samt Taun-Tauns und Walkern hat mich schwer beeindruckt. Die Gefrechte machen mir trotz gelegentlich aussetzender KI im Solo-Modus einen Heidenspaß. Dazu tragen natürlich die Spitzen-Grafik und der opulente Sound einen nicht unwesentlichen Teil bei.

This game gets a thumbs up but it screams for better multiplayer access. Lack of Game Spy support creates an inconvenience for Mac gamers in my opinion. For those focused on battling in the Star Wars universe, solo game play is satisfying and fun, but it's lack of game variants places it several notches below Unreal Tournament for multiplayer mayhem. Heroes are there, but they have questionable impact on the battle and mostly represent a danger that enemy players can avoid. For many gamers, lack of twitchy physics is a definite plus. And the game can be played in a window if that is your desire. If your into a Battlefield 1942 style game with a Star Wars setting, this game is a must. But, for as important as these things are, there is also the requirement to create a legitimately good game on its own merits. Battlefront achieves this balance, but not without a few groans and gripes along the way.

The infantry-oriented maps are probably the weakest part of Battlefront, because most of them are unimaginatively designed with bridged platforms that create obvious choke points, which limit the ability to flank and attack from unexpected directions. And let's face it, much of the appeal of Battlefront is the ability to hop into the many and varied vehicles of the Star Wars universe, so it makes you wonder why developer Pandemic even bothered with maps that have few or no vehicles.

This is one of those games that is successful in the delivering of instant action, but doesn't offer up much in terms of depth. If you thrive off of the online deathmatch scene, you'll fall head over heels in love with Battlefield. Otherwise, it'll likely only hold you interest for a few hours tops.

Pandemic has developed a title that hones in on the intensity and sheer size of the battles from both motion picture trilogies. War is waged on 10 different planets, including Hoth, Geonosis, Endor, and Revenge of the Sith’s Kashyyyk. Players have the freedom to choose who they’ll align themselves with in each of these conflicts. Naturally, vehicular units and personnel types vary by map. Players can pilot any vehicle, and upon death, can respawn as any trooper that they wish. In some cases, you may want a sniper. Other times you may need to fortify a base with someone wielding a rocket launcher. You really have to watch the battle unfold to determine the strategy that should be applied.

I have a real love/hate relationship with games based on the Star Wars Trilogy (and the soon-to-be trilogy of prequels). For every TIE Fighter, Jedi Knight 2 or Rogue Leader, we're given a Super Bombad Racing or Flight of the Falcon. The games really do range from the great to the truly awful. So when it was announced that Pandemic, makers of the so--so Episode 2 Clone Wars game, was working on a title that would make the large scale battles of the trilogies playable by up to 32 people at a time (depending on the version), I and a legion of fans were skeptical. The Battlefield games are great, and a Star Wars game that plays anything like those would be a dream, but would Pandemic be able to pull it off? The answer is a slightly hesitant yes.

Given just how much fighting goes on across the five Star Wars films we've seen to date, it's surprising that it's taken this long for someone to marry the films' vast, iconic battles to a Battlefield 1942 style premise. It seems, in hindsight, like the obvious thing to do. Although, to be fair, it's not entirely accurate to say that nobody's thought of it before - many have tried to emulate the sprawling conflicts of Hoth, Endor and Naboo, but the key thing is that outside of the space combat genre, no one has succeeded to any significant degree. With Star Wars Battlefront though, Pandemic Studios crushes those pretenders with a sinewy, Force-ified claw. And a Sarlaac pit. And Droidekas. And AT-ATs and snowspeeders. And so on.

While it's not without its problems (vehicles, for instance), Star Wars Battlefront is certainly one of the better games in the franchise's canon of titles. It's also one of the best online console games around, as the Xbox hasn't yet seen a large scale warfare games like this. Despite a few lags and slowdowns, the multiplayer action is always involving, and it gets pretty challenging when you're playing against a bunch of other humans. If you've got an Xbox Live account, you owe it to yourself to give Battlefront a try. If you don't, you might just want to rent this one and buy the upcoming DVDs instead.

Specifically geared towards multiplayer online play and spanning all six Star Wars films, Battlefront takes Battlefield 1942, slaps a Star Wars skin on it, and hurls you into team-based skirmishes where you are free to play on any side (Republic, Separatist, Rebel, or Empire) and pilot any vehicle from X-Wings and Spider Walkers to TIE Bombers and AT-ATs. And though heinous sitting-duck A.I. keeps the single-player experience a bit wan, waging galactic civil war over the internet with real live people destroys, despite slight technical flaws and cumbersome aerial vehicle controls.

Over the last two decades (or since the release of "Return of the Jedi") there have been quite a few Star Wars video games. Actually, that's a bit of an understatement: with over 100 titles spread across just about every game system ever made, Star Wars is arguably the deepest series in gaming history. Part of the greatness of the franchise is that its content allows for a wide variety of games, from space flyers to fighters, first-person shooters to third-person actioners, and even an MMORPG. It's a bit surprising, then, that there hasn't been an official large-scale multiplayer shooter in the vein of Battlefield 1942. Sure, we've seen mods that feature stormtroopers and far, far away locales, but they've never been created by LucasArts. That's finally about to change, however, with the release of Star Wars Battlefront.

Even after all the hype, Battlefront manages to stand tall as a great game that does the best job we've yet seen of playing out the battles of the Star Wars movies. Though the game has some balance issues that may hurt its long term appeal, it's still likely to become a huge favorite online. But beware - if you don't have online access for your PS2, Battlefront probably isn't the game for you.

Frankly I've been a bit tired of the usual first-person shooters lately, but Star Wars: Battlefront has been a breath of fresh air. Its combination of action, strategy, and Star Wars makes this game very compelling. If you have a broadband connection to the internet and you like Star Wars and/or first- and third-person shooters, maybe with a little strategy and driving thrown in for good measure, this is the game for you. You will have to put up with GameRanger and the smaller Mac community of players though, unless you prearrange to meet up with friends on a Direct IP server somewhere. If you only plan to play single-player then it's a fun game, but there's no storyline and I suspect some people might get bored playing the computer after a while.

It's darn good, but not without faults of its own. On Xbox and PlayStation, Battlefront offers a distinct style of play that has not yet been exploited or overdeveloped as it has on the PC. There's a very likable, very direct approach to its combat. It uses high quality visuals and sounds to implant a legitimately Star Wars experience into our heads, but it's careful to never beat us with the franchise. There are large, epic battles. There is a great emphasis on cooperation, and it's a very intuitive game. On PlayStation 2 and Xbox, all this works extremely well, despite its inherent AI and longevity shortcomings. On PC, unfortunately, the problems are all amplified by an overwhelming amount of competition that simply makes Battlefront look a bit simplistic.

The best thing about Battlefront, though, is that it works so well online. Finding and joining a game is no problem for Xbox or PS2 owners. Both consoles are supported by dedicated servers, and finding a good game to jump into is usually a breeze. The Xbox supports up to 24 players per game with a dedicated or non dedicated host, which exceeds the PS2's max of 16.

When all is said and done, this is a decent game that captures the epic feel of the massive Star Wars universe in one box, but the delivery certainly leaves a lot to be improved upon. I wanted to love this game (what Star Wars fanatic wouldn't?), but the fact is that this game is good but not great. The game needed about another 3 to 6 months of development time to get some of the bugs worked out (specifically the AI and the weapons loadouts), but I have a feeling the pressure was on since they timed the game's release with the release of the original trilogy's DVD iteration. I guess we'll have to wait for at least one to two patches for this game to truly be done, which is monumentally disappointing.

Let’s be blunt: Star Wars: Battlefront is no KOTOR. Of course, it’s no Super Bombad Racing , either. Battlefront is a decidedly average Star Wars game that is extremely fun as a rental, but wears thin with repeated play. If you have a lot of friends on Live that have Battlefront, there are worse ways to quench your online gaming thirst until Halo 2 comes out. Otherwise, put the money for this game toward the Star Wars Trilogy on DVD (Hayden Christiansen and all); you’ll get much more replay value out of that than out of Battlefront.

Upon loading up Battlefront for the first time you’ll likely be struck by two thoughts: Wow, this is a lot like being in the movie and Who the hell stuck a woman’s stocking over the camera? Seriously, go pull some pale nylons over your head and you’ll get an idea of the weird visual effect employed in Battlefront that most developers delving into their graphical toolbox have had the good sense to avoid. It doesn’t improve the visual quality any more than screwing up your eyes makes people more attractive, except by virtue of the fact that it’s harder to see.

Battlefront may have succeeded in presenting the life of a frontline soldier in war a little too well. Once you get past the glamour of those first few battles, all that's left is more of the same, battle after battle, war after war.

It's clear from the outset that the deeper you're immersed into Star Wars lore, the more you'll get out of Battlefront, but it's not a game entirely devoid of merit for non-fans. The game's multi-format roots make the game very accessible, as does the setting, so Battlefront could very easily be "My First Online Shooter" for quite a lot of people - and it will definitely ease people into the genre gently enough. Battlefront isn't going to win any Game Of The Year awards, let's not kid ourselves, and certainly doesn't do anything revolutionary with the genre - but it is an enjoyable, well put together title, with the odd flash of brilliance. Let's be frank - if you're not a Star Wars fan, you probably won't be buying this game. This one's unashamedly for the fanboys.

Trots de många varianterna för en spelare blir det precis som i alla spel av den här typen för enahanda om man spelar ensam. Det är omöjligt att utnyttja de taktiska möjligheter som spelet erbjuder och det blir mest en enmansshow med lasergevär, där man egentligen knappt påverkar utgången av slagen. Men som en bland en trupp gamla rebellvänner som rycker fram genom Endors skogar eller som en av de 32 mänskliga passagerarna på en republikansk skyttel blir det en helt annan sak.

Lucasarts teamed up with Pandemic to bring us another installment from the familiar world of Star Wars. I know, I know, Star Wars games are like Star Trek Movies: you have a 50-50 chance that the game is going to suck or disappoint you (That's in my humble opinion, Star Trek fans; don't write me--I've got "Botany Bay" tattooed on my butt. Star Trek II ruled). Every so often, one of these games from a Galaxy Far, Far Away comes along and gives you a few moments of glory and fun. Such is Star Wars Battlefront.

I can't deny the attraction of playing through pretty much every Star Wars battle of note throughout the entire series, and I like that you get to choose how you want to play through them, but that's really all this game offers. You'll never feel like you matter while playing Star Wars Battlefront.

Mal balancé au niveau des classes, avec des véhicules à la conduite peu gratifiante et pourtant ravageurs, le titre cumule les tares au point de se contenter d'être un gros jeu d'action plutôt primaire et bancal. En étant fan, Batllefront peut toujours jouer sur la corde sensible, mais il ne faudra pas être trop exigeant.

La différence entre Battlefront et un mauvais mod gratuit pour Battlefield joué sur une connexion RTC et un écran LCD préhistorique ? 55 euros. Après, c'est vous qui voyez.
