'You get to be Jango Fett.' We can't find a flaw with that statement.
Sometimes, it just pays better to be a bad guy. Take a ride on the dark
side in Star Wars: Bounty Hunter, courtesy of LucasArts.
One
Man Army
Assume the role of Jango Fett, the most feared
bounty hunter in the known galaxy. As a mercenary who swears allegiance
solely to the highest bidder, you've been hired to hunt down the elusive
leader of a mysterious cult. Set on the shadowy side of the Star Wars
universe, this third-person adventure spans 18 enormous levels in six
alien worlds.
Shoot First, Ask Questions Later
Notoriety comes at a price, as nearly everyone with a blaster rifle you
come across will likely take aim at you. Fortunately, Jango comes
equipped with his trademark akimbo blasters and can pick up any weapon
the opposition drops. Just about every imaginable piece of sci-fi
weaponry is up for grabs, including thermal grenades, flamethrowers and
missile launchers.
Carrying an arsenal like that must keep Jango
in pretty decent shape. Along with the ability to run and jump, Jango
can also climb ledges hand-over-hand, strafe, duck and dodge. With his
powerful jetpack, Jango can cruise in style. Not only is flying a blast;
it also allows you to explore just about every nook and cranny from
Tatooine to Endor.
Out Of This World
Speaking of
which, each of the areas is solidly based in the Star Wars universe.
You'll constantly find yourself blasting your way through seedy space
bars, combat arenas and Sarlacc pits.
A savvy mercenary needs
more than pure run-and-gun skills. The levels test your mental abilities
with hidden areas to discover and loads of buttons to push and switches
to activate. You can use your handy scanner to identify non-friendlies
and glean other useful information.
Keep in mind that certain
quarries must be captured alive. One slip of the trigger finger and your
prize money is forfeited.
Sights And Sounds
The
developers at LucasArts have done a tremendous job ensuring that Bounty
Hunter immerses players in the Star Wars universe. The action moves
along at a brisk 60 frames per second. With all those high-resolution
texture maps and spectacular lighting effects, you can practically smell
your smoldering blasters as laser fire fills the screen. For a sharper
and clearer image, select the Progressive Scan option when playing on a
TV set that supports that feature.
Equally good is the soundtrack
of classic Star Wars music. Mixing familiar John Williams tunes with
newly written tracks, Bounty Hunter is truly an aural treat. The music
deftly changes mood and pace to reflect the on-screen action.
The
pros at Skywalker Sound have faithfully reproduced sound effects from
the Star Wars movies. Star Wars: Episode II's Temuera Morrison
reprises his role as Jango Fett, Leeanna Walsman returns from the same
movie to voice Zam Wesell. Veteran screen and voice actor Clancy Brown
brings his signature gruffness to the role of Jango's arch-nemesis,
Montross.
Give In To The Dark Side
Few Star Wars
video game franchises have allowed players to experience the dark side
of the Force. Not only does Star Wars: Bounty Hunter succeed at
immersing players in a morally ambiguous netherworld, it does so with a
remarkable level of detail and polish.
