I have played almost all of the real time strategy games to be released in the past few years and most have come and gone rather quickly. This one however, will most likely be on my hard drive for months to come. Am I a Star Wars fanatic? No I would not say that. But I will say that it is a blast to be able to play the races and units familiar to the Star Wars World. And that makes it just fresh enough to garner a well deserved 4.5 GiN gems from this reviewer.

Lets get this out of the way first. This game is smokin’ folks. Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds delivers a fast paced action packed Empire stomping, Wookie howling, Rebel Alliance whooping, Jedi slashing, Sith Lord choking good time. Remember it’s all in the Star Wars universe, and it’s all good. So on to the descriptions of gaming goodness.

Thanks to those Mac loving Stormtroopers at Aspyr Media, I’ve been able to lead TIE-Fighters, Imperial Walkers, Rebel Speeders and even Jedi Knights into fearsome combat. That’s right, my friends, Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds (SWGB) has landed on the Mac OS. Aside from sporting just about every major vehicle and character in the known Star Wars universe, Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds promises real-time strategy (RTS) gamers intense combat on a grand scale.
WindowsActionTrip (Nov 26, 2001)
Galactic Battlegrounds is a fun and solid game that despite having dated graphics and a lot of resemblance to an "Age" mod, it finally delivers the RTS Star Wars game that will satisfy the fans who have waited for a long time for a RTS game worthy of the Star Wars legacy. Galactic Battleground is a must for any Star Wars and strategy game fan and while not the most original idea, is very fun.
WindowsGameSpot (Belgium/Netherlands) (Nov 28, 2001)
WindowsGameSpot (Nov 20, 2001)
Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds will send Star Wars purists into a tizzy. Tauntauns on Tatooine? Dewbacks in outer space? Naboo Fighters tussling with X-Wings that haven't been invented yet? TIE Fighters with shields? And since when do Wookiees have tanks? The Star Wars universe already requires a willing suspension of disbelief, but most fans at least expect some internal consistency.
MacintoshMac Addict (Nov, 2002)
This is one of those rare movie-based games that's both fun on its own terms and true to the original. Fans of either real-time strategy games or Star Wars should snap up this title—but expect a bit of a learning curve if you aren't already a StarCraft expert.
WindowsGameplay (Benelux) (Dec 28, 2001)
Star Wars meets Age of Empires 2.
MacintoshAppleLinks.Com (Aug 19, 2002)
The best thing about Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds (SWGB) is that you can kill Jar-Jar Binks. That could have been the whole game as far as I'm concerned; Jar-Jar trying to get away, perhaps one leg already broken, while a host of AT-ATs and TIE bombers quickly close in on him. I'd have bought that game if it were only that, and several more as gifts for dear friends. Lucasarts, take note.
WindowsIGN (Nov 19, 2001)
I've used the "two great tastes that taste great together" metaphor quite a few times in the past but I was wasting it; this is the game that that phrase is made for. A lot of people will tell you that Galactic Battlegrounds is based off of Age of Kings (known to the wider world as Age of Empires II). But despite their fancy education and their nice teeth, those people are liars. The fact of the matter is that Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds is pretty much Age of Kings right from the start.
WindowsGame Watcher (Aug 11, 2003)
So for the ones who played Age of Kings, Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds might be a bit boring. It can be considered as an unofficial expansion of AOK if you ask me.
WindowsGameSpy (2001)
This is Star Wars as you never imagined it. Tank clad Wookies fighting a horde of Gungan Warriors as the Galactic Empire and Rebel Alliance join forces to stop a vicious assault from the combined forces of the Trade Federation and Royal Naboo armies. Sure, the game isn't pre-designed with such a scenario in mind, but it's a possible situation. Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds takes on an almost irreverent twist as it successfully brings the Star Wars franchise to a very playable and entertaining RTS.
WindowsGameStar (Germany) (Dec 05, 2001)

MacintoshGames4Mac (2002)
Star Wars – Galactic Battlegrounds hatte großes Potenzial.

WindowsComputer Gaming World (CGW) (Mar, 2002)
The graphics are dated and the game isn’t particularly innovative, But most reservations get thrown out the window once you start playing. This game is fun, pure and simple. And it does a nice job of recreating all the glorious conflict and warfare of the Star Wars saga.

Verdict.
WindowsPC Games (Germany) (Dec 18, 2001)
WindowsG4 Tech: Tech TV (Nov 21, 2001)
The developers could hardly have released a bad game when using the AOE II engine. There is a reason "Age of Kings" is at the top of so many all-time lists. If you didn't get enough of AOE II with the "Conquerors" expansion, or if you would like to continue playing the same game with a new set of pixels, you will find the experience satisfying. Similarly, if you are a "Star Wars" fan who is trying the RTS genre for the first time, "Galactic Battlegrounds" is a good choice. It's not the best game LucasArts has ever released, but this title certainly bodes well for the resurgence of LucasArts gaming.
MacintoshTechtite (2002)
While it is a blast (no pun intended) to pit 50 stormtroopers and Siths against Jedi and Rebel soldiers, there's the sneaking feeling, that it could've been even better.
MacintoshmacHOME (2002)
Perhaps our expectations were too high but we thought that we'd get more from this game. A must-have for Star Wars or AoE freaks, but not necessary for casual game fans.
WindowsGamekult (Nov 23, 2001)
WindowsSuper Play (Sweden) (Dec, 2001)
WindowsGame Revolution (Nov, 2001)
Star Wars fans, this is it - the game we've all been waiting for! No, I'm not talking about the amazing Star Wars Rogue Leader. I'm talking about the only game in which you are allowed to shoot Gungans! Yep, Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds is the name of the game and, if nothing else, this game scores points for that trait alone. I just wish you could shoot a particularly annoying Gungan, but no luck.
WindowsGame Informer Magazine (Dec, 2001)
Poorly developed mission structure, lackluster graphics, and silly storylines hamper this game, but ultimately it becomes obvious that not a lot of work went into Galactic Battlegrounds. It seems a complete travesty that the powers that be can’t seem to get a Star Wars RTS right with all of the potential there is for something spectacular.
WindowsGame Informer Magazine (Dec, 2001)
There’s no denying that Galactic Battlegrounds was a monumental undertaking for LucasArts. The amount of work that went into this project is very impressive, encompassing every aspect of the Star Wars universe. Instead of focusing on a specific timeline, LucasArts tapped into the classic trilogy, Episode I, the expanded universe, and was also granted the freedom to design its own stockade of vehicles, troops, and structures. Rather than scrutinizing which vehicles and factions should be included, LucasArts threw caution to the wind and incorporated everything. Within the six civilizations, players can construct and command over 300 different units for skirmishes over land, sea, and air.
