Stolen isn’t a bad game, it’s let down by the annoying wakeful guards and the fact that a lot of the lights in the level can’t be shot out with Anya’s pistol, leaving you no room to really hide. The game relies on a check-point save system and you can save your check-pointed progress at any time, you do have numerous bonus things to unlock and the environments are large and full of little sub-things to steal. The mini-games add an extra layer of challenge and some players might find the difficulty a little daunting, since no-matter what you do to remain undetected, the guards will sound the alarm as soon as they wake up from their enforced slumber – some people might argue that’s what they would do, but we’re in a comic-style game where the laws of reality are already askew, knocking them a little further in favour of the stealthy player would have been nice.

Although developer Blue 52 officially closed its doors last month, the studio's last project managed to sneak out onto store shelves. Published by Hip Interactive, Stolen is a stealth action title that borrows elements from a number of established franchises and spins them into a game that is derivative, yet enjoyable.

The story mode really won't keep you busy for long. It can easily be beaten in one sitting, which is really short in this day and age. Not to mention there is no reason to play the missions over again due to the lack of variety. With no multiplayer, there is no reason to buy Stolen even if you are a fan of the genre. Try it for a rental, but it's not even worth that, unless you've run out of your craving for Sam Fisher.

While these are good building blocks for a stealth title, the game falters where most do: level design, plot, and enemy AI. The enemies are painfully dull, and since you can't apply lethal chokeholds, you'll soon find it quicker to just run around them. The levels and missions are equally unremarkable, which makes for yet another promising stealth title that doesn't live up to its potential.

I must admit this one gave me a hard time, as it did not appear to have any obvious flaws that I could point out, and yet I didn't enjoy it all that much. The hi-tech gadgets are there - yet you don't need them. The massive levels are there - yet most of them are plain boring. The place is full of security cameras and guards - yet you can easily deal with them once you've familiarized yourself with the gameplay mechanics. Well, you get the picture. My verdict is that Stolen is doomed to dwell in the realm of mediocrity forever.

It isn’t easy to create a good stealth game. Only a select few titles have been able to correctly implement the distinctive elements that the genre requires, while still keeping a good amount of intensity to prevent things from getting tedious. The difficulty in pulling this off is evident in developer Blue 52’s first project, Stolen, which introduces new and interesting ideas but fails to capitalize on them. This makes for a disappointing game that, while not doing anything horribly wrong, had serious potential to be much better instead of bordering on the edge of mediocrity.

XboxGameZone
Stolen, the latest title published by Hip Interactive, is a third-person stealth action game that puts players in the shoes of a cat-burglar as she breaks into highly secure buildings in order to steal precious rarities while avoiding guards and traps and the like. Stolen takes a lot of familiar elements from other entries in the stealth action genre, but unfortunately fails to merge them into compelling gameplay. Instead, the game suffers from simplistic gameplay, weak AI and a general lack of polish. If you are a stealth action fan, you’d do well to look elsewhere.

If you really love stealth games of sexy ladies in black suits you may want to try this game for a while but there are enough other options like Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory that will offer a lot more for your money.

PlayStation 2Worth Playing
Overall, Stolen was mostly disappointing, although it had some redeeming factors to make it somewhat enjoyable. It borrows heavily from other titles, but it needed some more refinement before it could have been a smash hit. With the current price tag, I can't recommend this to other gamers due to the sluggish aspects of the game. If this were a value game, I would suggest giving it a try, but only if you were running low on games.

Stolen feels like a budget title being sold at full price, and with so many good stealth games already available, there's simply no reason to play this one.

XboxIGN
The main character in Stolen may be a thief, but the feeling of playing the game is like hanging out with a collector. With several pieces of gameplay that were lifted from some stellar games it would be hoped that the result would be at least a decent title. But sadly, that's not the case here and the result is a game that provides a clumsy rehash of things that have been around before. For those that are hungry for a new stealth title, Stolen is a possible candidate for a bargain bin purchase, but this is otherwise completely skippable.

PlayStation 2IGN
Stolen has a couple of different essential elements with its acrobatics and its general stealthy action. The acrobatics are simple areas in which the buxom thief, Anya Romanov, can run, jump, swing, and climb her way through different obstacle courses that are placed throughout the game. There is no goal tall or far away enough to hold Anya back from her target. But really, this game is all about the stealth and the stealing.

Stolen klaut ...

XboxThe Next Level
Unless you’re seriously starved for an alternative stealth game, it’s hard to justify Stolen as a recommended purchase. The logic is non-existant – why is it that choking a guard won’t bring him down? And would it have killed the developers to incorporate more intelligent AI parameters? Clearly, a lot of development was poured into mirroring pre-established stealth games. It’s too bad the game lacks the enjoyable gameplay elements to make playing worthwhile. With its relative short length and “son of Splinter Cell” gameplay, Stolen ends up being nothing more than a rainy day rental.

Overall, Stolen just doesn't have much to offer to even the most diehard stealth fans. Once you complete the game there's no reason to ever play it again. There are no difficulty settings or interesting unlockables; there are only a few concept stills you can access by performing well in each level. In the end, Stolen feels like a budget title being sold at full price, and with so many good stealth games already available, there's simply no reason to play this one.

Just when we thought that the videogame market had reached its critical mass of espionage characters, Stolen creeps, ever so stealthily, onto our Xbox and thankfully departs with the same level of covertness. Chances are that most gamers will never know of the existence of Stolen, a game that is more of a concoction of previous stealth titles rather than something truly original.

There's nothing extremely wrong with Stolen. It's just so generic, despite its few twists, and its B-grade action movie cinematics and plot are absolutely the stuff of dozens of other also-ran action games of the current generation. Believe me, I've lost count. If Stolen had come out a few years ago as it now is, it would have been a solid game, heralded for its few creative tweaks to the genre. But with so many different games that offer much more fully realized, original stealth experiences on the Xbox and PS2, this one's circling the bargain bins from the moment it enters shops. If you're a hardcore stealth fan and you've polished everything off, it's still just a rental.

Halfway through the jewel-heisting adventure of Stolen, I crept up behind a pudgy guard in a dark corridor. I must have been a little sloppy about it, because right as I pressed the button to put a sleeper hold on him the guard turned around. Somewhere in the mysterious guts of the game lines of code collided in a train wreck of bugs. The chokehold turned into what looked like an aggressive make-out session between the guard and Anya, Stolen's shoplifting heroine. The guard's cry of, "There she is!" repeated itself into a never-ending loop. "There she is! There she is! There she is! There she is! There she is! There she is! There she is! There she is!" It followed me around the level until, fed up, I decided to supplement my own soundtrack.

Some games are just obviously mediocre. Others give you a little bit of hope before descending into the doldrums. Stolen is the latter. While the idea of taking stealth away from burly military men and personifying it in the form of a buxom female art thief is an interesting one, completely mediocre execution on every level renders this game a missed opportunity for innovation and entertainment.

Stolen is a tale of wasted potential. That's not what it's really about; it tries to be a smart thriller with political intrigue at the wheel, but the story isn't very well written or implemented, so you won't even notice all that. It's a stealth title featuring a sexy female thief, and in a world dominated by ultra-cool and macho Solid Snake types, the black leather clad Anya Romanov (think Underworld) is a welcome as well as delicious sight.

Let's keep this one short and sweet, as writing pages about garbage is a waste of time, both for the writer and reader. I'm just going to savage Stolen and leave it bleeding on the sidewalk, an act probably not nearly as fun as if it were being performed on the heroine of the game, but infinitely more satisfying as a whole. As computer entertainment, Stolen is DOA, and here is why.
