Holy cow! Alpha 2's gameplay is solid as ever, and adventurous gamers can indulge themselves with new "custom combos". A survival mode is now available in addition to arcade, versus, and training. There's an autosave function, as well as a gallery of unlockable illustrations. Street Fighter Alpha 2 is billed as a "precise translation" of the arcade game, and it's hard to argue. Not even Street Fighter Alpha 3 (Playstation, 1999) could touch this masterpiece.

Overall, it is an awesome translation and I thank Capcom for doing such awesome job. Any SF or fighting fan should get this game!

Overall I was very impressed with the SNES version of Street Fighter Alpha 2. Despite not being quite as good as other versions of the game, I believe this is the highest quality port possible on the outdated hardware. I would highly recommend tracking this title down if your into 2D fighting games and don't own a Saturn, PS1 or newer console. Great job Nintendo.

Saturn owners should be pleased to know that Street Fighter Alpha 2's translation from coin-op to home is almost flawless. The graphics are solid and done in the same anime style as the first Alpha. The animation is topnotch, as are the sounds and music. The backgrounds are first rate, giving Alpha 2 some of the best scenery yet seen in a Street Fighter game.

The moves are a snap to execute, thanks to responsive controls. The only drawback is that the fights are slow, even on the game's fastest turbo setting. Flaws aside, SFA2 is a good fighting game that remains (for the most part) faithful to it's arcade counterpart.

There is no denying it, you can argue all you want, but the Saturn is just a better 2D system. The PlayStation, in comparison, is no match for the RAM cart, and the extra 2D processing power of the Saturn. It's by that reasoning that some of the best Capcom has to offer ends up getting top treatment on the Saturn. Street Fighter Alpha 2 may not be the best Capcom has to offer, but you'd never know it with this flawless presentation.

Alpha 2 proves that 2-D fighting can at times be better than its polygonal brethren. Even though the concept of a Street Fighter rehash sounds very old, Street Fighter Alpha 2 proves itself to be among the best fighting games on the market, be it in the 2-D or 3-D arena. Players jaded by performing the same moves with the same characters for years, take note: Capcom managed to put it all together in Street Fighter Alpha 2, creating a fantastic fighting package that mirrors the arcade version.

All in all, Street Fighter Alpha 2 is just a solid fighting game and nothing more. Fans of the earlier games would really like this latest (or earliest as the case may be) installment. For the rest of us it's just 2D fighting business as usual.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it—but keep tweaking and re-releasing it until the horse is dead (and while you're at it, block that metaphor!). This latest port from the arcade hit serves up eighteen characters, a few brand new, most familiar and a handful known only to those who unlocked secrets in previous games. Twenty new backgrounds look great, a Custom Combo option lets you design your own special attacks, frame rates are high and the game is priced to move at $29.95. Yes, it's a bit dated, with its completely 2D layout and its silly energy-ball weapon fixation. But it's still scads of fun, perfect for blowing off some steam at the end of a hard day. It also remains one of the only hand-to-hand combat games that a novice can play well on a first try. Okay, so maybe it isn't Van Gogh. Maybe there are some "better" fighting games out there, strictly speaking. And maybe the PC will never really be the right platform for this kind of contest. But who cares? It's great fun anyway.

Let's face it, there are just certain games that shouldn't be made on the 16-bitters. Sure, they tried pretty hard and came relatively close, but overall SFA2 on the Super NES is more of a chore than anything else. There's a slight load time right before the battle and the sound sounds like it's being playing through a coffee can - a poor quality coffee can at that. Sodom's name was changed to Katana - I wonder why? The graphics were good but the poor control pretty much negated that. Speaking of poor control, I think back to Super SF2 and remember how well that played compared to this one. Oh well, maybe next time.

Warning: Unless you DO NOT own a Saturn or a Playstation, you should not be playing this version of Street Fighter Alpha II. Actually, unless this is your only option in the world, stay away. It's not the most terrible fighter available for the console, but the under the hood of the SNES you can almost hear heavy breathing going on.
