In terms of sheer gameplay, both are equally superb. So finally, after 15 years of non-stop trash talking, Playstation and Saturn fans everywhere can put their differences aside and embrace each other in the spirit of peace and harmony.

Seguirono applausi. Infine calarono in sala tenebra e silenzio. Qua e là flebili gemiti di gioia e malinconia.

Holy cow! Alpha 2's gameplay is solid as ever, and adventurous gamers can indulge themselves with new "custom combos". A survival mode is now available in addition to arcade, versus, and training. There's an autosave function, as well as a gallery of unlockable illustrations. Street Fighter Alpha 2 is billed as a "precise translation" of the arcade game, and it's hard to argue. Not even Street Fighter Alpha 3 (Playstation, 1999) could touch this masterpiece.

Overall, it is an awesome translation and I thank Capcom for doing such awesome job. Any SF or fighting fan should get this game!

Overall I was very impressed with the SNES version of Street Fighter Alpha 2. Despite not being quite as good as other versions of the game, I believe this is the highest quality port possible on the outdated hardware. I would highly recommend tracking this title down if your into 2D fighting games and don't own a Saturn, PS1 or newer console. Great job Nintendo.

There's a misconception in the videogame world that Street Fighter fanatics are a different breed of gamer. These quarter carriers have spent more money mastering the art of fireball flinging than it takes to buy yourself a law degree. Well, I've got news for you, the reason why the Street Fighter games have put so much money into Capcom's vaults is not just because of these hyper-fans. Street Fighter games are so incredibly well designed, they appeal to every skill level. That's why they're commonly regarded as the best fighting games on the planet (although there are plenty of Tekken and Virtua Fighter players who might have something to say about that). Street Fighter Alpha 2 is the best Street Fighter ever. Get the picture?

It’s a shame to think that we’re seeing the final generation of 2-D Capcom beat- ’em-ups on the PlayStation, with rumours flying that the current crop of home consoles will be unable to handle the graphical excesses of SF III. For the moment though, Street Fighter Zero 2 is guaranteed to restore any beat-’em-up fan’s faith in Sony’s machine and should pave the way for excellent conversions of Marvel Super Heroes and X-Men.

As far as arcade conversions go, this is near perfect. The backgrounds and character animations are only missing a few frames and the classic arcade soundtrack is fully intact. Strangely enough, the main fault in the game doesn't fall on the actual game, but on the PlayStation controller, which makes executing special moves very difficult. I would suggest picking up one of the available joysticks, which will have you throwing fireballs with the best of them.

Saturn owners should be pleased to know that Street Fighter Alpha 2's translation from coin-op to home is almost flawless. The graphics are solid and done in the same anime style as the first Alpha. The animation is topnotch, as are the sounds and music. The backgrounds are first rate, giving Alpha 2 some of the best scenery yet seen in a Street Fighter game.

All in all, Street Fighter Alpha 2 is the Street Fighter II that you know and love, with added gameplay features and improved animation. If you're a Street Fighter fan, or a fan of fighting games and do not yet own a Street Fighter game, then you would do well to pick this one up.

WiiNintendo Life
There's no denying that the original Super Nintendo port of Capcom's Street Fighter 2 arcade hit was extremely impressive and damn near arcade-perfect, but there's also something to be said for the job they did in bringing a very ambitious Street Fighter Alpha 2 arcade title to the console without having to sacrifice too much in the transition. Sure the visuals are a bit toned down and the brief loading times are irksome but overall the game is intact and still every bit as playable as it was in the arcades. Fans of the Alpha series will likely find this Super Nintendo release quite solid and a good bargain at 800 Wii Points. And anyone that has yet to give the Alpha series a try, now might be as good a time as any.

The moves are a snap to execute, thanks to responsive controls. The only drawback is that the fights are slow, even on the game's fastest turbo setting. Flaws aside, SFA2 is a good fighting game that remains (for the most part) faithful to it's arcade counterpart.

SEGA SaturnDefunct Games
There is no denying it, you can argue all you want, but the Saturn is just a better 2D system. The PlayStation, in comparison, is no match for the RAM cart, and the extra 2D processing power of the Saturn. It's by that reasoning that some of the best Capcom has to offer ends up getting top treatment on the Saturn. Street Fighter Alpha 2 may not be the best Capcom has to offer, but you'd never know it with this flawless presentation.

Alpha 2 proves that 2-D fighting can at times be better than its polygonal brethren. Even though the concept of a Street Fighter rehash sounds very old, Street Fighter Alpha 2 proves itself to be among the best fighting games on the market, be it in the 2-D or 3-D arena. Players jaded by performing the same moves with the same characters for years, take note: Capcom managed to put it all together in Street Fighter Alpha 2, creating a fantastic fighting package that mirrors the arcade version.

SEGA SaturnGame Revolution
All in all, Street Fighter Alpha 2 is just a solid fighting game and nothing more. Fans of the earlier games would really like this latest (or earliest as the case may be) installment. For the rest of us it's just 2D fighting business as usual.

Most SNES owners didn't even know this game existed. Timing was mostly to blame, as while Street Fighter Alpha 2 was certainly well known in American arcades in early 1996, by the time this obscure 16-bit port was released at the end of that same year most Big N loyalists had already moved on to the Nintendo 64. Luckily, those that missed it then didn't miss much -- this watered-down edition had to make a lot of compromises to fit onto an SNES cartridge. And, today, those same drawbacks will probably turn off potential purchasers of this new Virtual Console release as well.

SNESLens of Truth
On a system known for its genre defining 2D titles, seeing SFA2 on the Super Nintendo is pretty disappointing. The actual gameplay is a close match to its 32-Bit Saturn \ PS1 counterparts, but all the time you’ll spend waiting during matches just does too much to damage the experience. It may be a rare find in its original (SNES) form, giving it some appeal to collectors of both SF and the SNES, but as a game it’s a definite skip. SFA2 is one of the best fighting games of all time, not to mention one of my favorite, just not on the SNES.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it—but keep tweaking and re-releasing it until the horse is dead (and while you're at it, block that metaphor!). This latest port from the arcade hit serves up eighteen characters, a few brand new, most familiar and a handful known only to those who unlocked secrets in previous games. Twenty new backgrounds look great, a Custom Combo option lets you design your own special attacks, frame rates are high and the game is priced to move at $29.95. Yes, it's a bit dated, with its completely 2D layout and its silly energy-ball weapon fixation. But it's still scads of fun, perfect for blowing off some steam at the end of a hard day. It also remains one of the only hand-to-hand combat games that a novice can play well on a first try. Okay, so maybe it isn't Van Gogh. Maybe there are some "better" fighting games out there, strictly speaking. And maybe the PC will never really be the right platform for this kind of contest. But who cares? It's great fun anyway.

SNESElectronic Gaming Monthly (EGM)
Let's face it, there are just certain games that shouldn't be made on the 16-bitters. Sure, they tried pretty hard and came relatively close, but overall SFA2 on the Super NES is more of a chore than anything else. There's a slight load time right before the battle and the sound sounds like it's being playing through a coffee can - a poor quality coffee can at that. Sodom's name was changed to Katana - I wonder why? The graphics were good but the poor control pretty much negated that. Speaking of poor control, I think back to Super SF2 and remember how well that played compared to this one. Oh well, maybe next time.

Warning: Unless you DO NOT own a Saturn or a Playstation, you should not be playing this version of Street Fighter Alpha II. Actually, unless this is your only option in the world, stay away. It's not the most terrible fighter available for the console, but the under the hood of the SNES you can almost hear heavy breathing going on.

This game might have some appeal as a way to explore an aspect of gaming from days gone by, but it’s poorly implemented—it actually tried to install DirectX3 on my machine, Nostalgia aside, there are much better fighting games. This game is really nor worth your money unless you are a die-hard STREET FIGHTER Fan.
