The Sum of All Fears is timed to be in store shelves this Friday in time for the movie of course. Red Storm's always been quick to move on their own franchises with expansion packs and sequels springing from the Rainbow Six franchise on a pretty constant basis and it makes sense that a title would come out to coincide with the film. Or maybe the film coincides with the game, I can't keep track.

WindowsGameSpot (Belgium/Netherlands)

The Sum of All Fears is a very good first-person shooter game. The story evolves, there are a number of challenges that will require you to think your way through a situation rather than just go in firing. This is entertaining and addictive game playing.

WindowsGame Chronicles
The Sum Of All Fears offers more of what we have come to expect from a Tom Clancy and Red Storm game. There are a few interesting additions that almost make me wonder if this game was more of an experiment for the designers to try out some of their ideas before implementing them in future products. I’m guessing this is the last game we see of this “type” before Red Storm unleashes entirely new and ground breaking design changes in the genre – things that are only hinted at in this game.

WindowsActionTrip
Bearing in mind that this game is more of a marketing stunt than a bona fide game project, TSoAF plays decently enough. I like the fact that it's a lot more action-oriented and that the controls are dumbed down, because you can just sit down, relax and play a mission or two. However, all the tactical features (and some RPG features) from Ghost Recon are gone, and that causes the action to get rather repetitive and downright boring after a while. At normal settings, my guy would auto-aim, and with some deadly accuracy too, which narrows my duties to carefully moving around and guessing where the programmers have placed the awaiting tango. The enemy AI is well-done, in a sense that it has to look for you first before it shoots. In other words, the bad guys cannot spot you and cap you from a mile away. Though this is a welcome feature in terms of realism, it makes my job even easier, as you can catch some of the terrorist off-guard.

While it's clear that The Sum of All Fears was rushed for the movie's release, it's a surprisingly solid game. Though the single-player campaign game is too short, the multiplayer is decent, and a few of the game's single-player modes are interesting enough to warrant a few tries. What's more, The Sum of All Fears is easily one of the most accessible tactical shooters ever made, so it's a good starter game for beginners.

WindowsGameplanet
All in all, SOAF is good but not quite great. The inclusion of the "newbie map" is a double-edged sword - while it does definately make the concept much more approachable to newbies, it damages the playability for the hardened gamer and subtracts any longevity that this title might otherwise have had. It's a good blast through for the solitary gamer and offers unique rewards to those who are able to play it in a networked environment, without being stunning at either. The game's budget price largely makes up for it's shortcomings and makes this an attractive buy for seasoned counter-terrorists and trigger happy newbies alike. Check it out.

The Sum of all Fears is een weinig indrukwekkend pc-spel dat vooral omwille van de lage prijs miscchien een aankoop rechtvaardigt.

I’m sorry to say this as a conclusion, but most games based on movies tend to be lacking in many areas and The Sum Of All Fears is not an exception. The gameplay lacks action (for a shooter), the sounds are plain inadequate and the enemy soldiers aren’t flexible enough.

Is The Sum of All Fears a game you'll want to play? Hardcore fans will probably not find enough value in it, though you can toggle enough options to make it at least mildly challenging -- it's really aimed at casual gamers. Because it's so forgiving, it's a great way to introduce someone to the tactical shooter genre. If you're a veteran of Red Storm's games, you might want to catch this one after the price has been marked down -- even $30 might be a bit much. But if you're looking to try out tactical shooters for the first time, The Sum of All Fears is a good place to start.

WindowsFragland.net
The 11 missions are not nearly enough to keep you occupied for more than a week (on the harder levels - easy can be finished within 1 day) and if you really want a game that needs tactics, you can better look for something else.

PlayStation 2Gamekult

WindowsGame Revolution
The big problem here is trying to figure out exactly who this game is for. If you own Rainbow Six or Ghost Recon, you'd be paying cash money for less than half of what you already have. If you haven't played RS or GR, then try them out because they're both much better than this. If you find you don't like having to take time to carefully plan and execute a complex mission, then more visceral action games are likely your bag and you needn't apply here. You might think that Rainbow Six without the strategy is half the game, but the more you play The Sum of All Fears, the more it becomes clear that that it was far, far more than that.

GameCubeGamePro
The Sum of All Fears even falls short of second-rate. It’s a game that unfortunately should have never been ported from the PC it tarnishes the super-cool Tom Clancy world (though the game doesn’t carry his name) that once before seemed like a remarkable place in the gaming universe.

GameCubeGameSpot
This first-person shooter from Red Storm Entertainment suffers from graphical problems, poor control, and terrible AI, and on top of all that, it can be beaten in less than two hours your first time through.

Ever since catching The Hunt for Red October in theatres back in the day, I've been one of the patriotic many that have been hooked on all things Clancy. When Rainbow Six first launched on the PC, I was taken by its depth, strategy, and precise tactical control. Red Storm is universally equated with quality shooters in my mind, and so it truly pains me to look forward to a game such as The Sum of All Fears on GameCube and then feel as betrayed and disappointed as I am now. This is not the way we prefer to experience our Tom Clancy universe, and frankly, I'm a bit saddened by what Cube fans must settle for in this neglected PC port. Please do not be enticed by its stylish olive-drab packaging when you find this title sitting on store shelves, as it will surely do the same to you.

The last level? You have to take out four guards that look just like the other guards. You're in a castle, full of fireplaces with 2D flames that have two frames of animation. Foes carrying pistols still have their left arm out as if they were carrying rifles. The game ends with you running into a courtyard, then flicking to the teammate still caught in a wall glitch, and steering him to safety. And then, the game ends. When you start considering Die Hard: Vendetta as a GameCube work of art compared to this, you know you're playing the worst game of 2003. The producer of this catastrophe, and those responsible for allowing this unfinished glitch-fest into the public's hands, should be fired. Preferably out of a cannon.

WindowsGame Over Online
With Rainbow Six and surely, another Ghost Recon title coming out later, Fears unfortunately resembles more as an interim title. Raven Shield, the true successor to Red Storm's close quarter battle game, will run on an Unreal engine so the longevity of this close quarter game is in question, especially if they are depending on this game to develop a vibrant community. Whether Fears will develop into the next Rainbow Six in terms of fan popularity will ultimately be based on whether the theatrical release will fetch Fears enough attention. In spite of these shortcomings, Fears features excellent production values. That really cannot be discounted on any level; visually or aurally. It is a fun, if short trip to Clancy's world of counter-terrorism and military operations. Based on a real piece of Clancy fiction this time, the literary elements transform the gaming experience into something all the more enjoyable.
