This game is essentially the definitive Mario 3 experience. On top of updated design, character models, music, and voice acting, it features 38 levels from the Mario 3 universe that you most likely have not played before, complete with added collectible challenges and character selection options. These bonus levels are chock full of extra content, from Super Mario World enemies like Wiggler to Super Mario 2's turnip chucking, and it's these little nods to other games in the series that really make this something special. The e-Reader was notoriously difficult to use, and many of the bonus levels were never made available in NA and Europe. SMA 4 provides a convenient way for you to play all of these bonus levels in one small package, effectively making one of the greatest platformers of all time even better.

So celebrate it. The VC price structure works in our favour for once, making this multi-layered 8 bit classic an absolutely indecent bargain. Download it. Thank me later. Or thank Miyamoto-san. He did most of the work.

„Super Mario Bros. 3” jest tytułem, do którego wraca się niejednokrotnie.
NESThe DOS Spirit (Aug 17, 2012)

Super Mario Brothers 3 made for us, indelible memories. You should take every opportunity to make your own memories with it as well. There is a strong chance that scenes from the game will be etched into your heart, with a potent emotional point of reference blended in. Something like an adventurous plumber collecting coins in clouds with silver linings. Something like sunny days and silver cups.

SMB3 cannot come any more highly recommended. It is widely regarded as the best game on the NES by many. Some would even say it rivals the magnificent Super Mario World on the SNES though the jury is out on that one. You owe it to yourself to try both out and decide for yourself.

Still to this day I keep on learning – over fifteen years' worth of secrets have been tucked away. Still to this day I keep on trying – there’s undoubted beauty in watching the refined play. Super Mario Bros. 3 is the back of my hand; the hours spent here since my childhood easily eclipse four digits. But in my most honest moment, I would admit, if I could go back and do it all over again, well, I know I wouldn’t. I’d stay forever young.

Game Boy AdvanceSuper Play (Sweden) (Nov, 2003)
NESNES Archives (Mar 13, 2008)
Super Mario Bros. 3 is often considered to be the best game on the NES and it is hard to argue with that assessment. If you don’t own this game then your NES collection has a large hole in it. If you haven’t played it in awhile or have never beaten it without warping, set aside a day and enjoy one of the best experiences the video game world has to offer!
Game Boy (Feb 05, 2006)
Quite simply, this game is really what SMB3 was meant to be in the first place. It's one of the greatest platformers of all time, and having an updated remake of it on the GBA is more that awesome.
NESThe Video Game Critic (Dec 13, 2003)
Super Mario Bros 3 uses the same gameplay as the first, but there's a lot more to discover here, with eight huge "worlds" to explore, each with its own collection of stages and bonus games. This was one of the first video games to employ interactive maps, allowing the player to move freely between the stages. New power-ups allow Mario to transform into characters with special abilities including Racoon Mario, Fire Mario, Frog Mario, and Tanooki Mario. Numerous mini-games add variety and supply bonus items you can activate between stages. The stages themselves are expertly designed and many feature multiple routes. You can't save your game, but there are continues available and "warp whistles" that let you skip ahead. Like the first game, the graphics and music are simple but brimming with personality. It's no surprise that most NES fans regard Super Mario Bros 3 as the greatest Mario Bros game of all time.

SMA4 packs quite a bit of great gameplay into a very small cartridge. It's the same SMB3 you know and love, but has enough new features to keep SMB3 vets entertained (including an ever-so-slightly altered ending which may make some purists cry foul). As with every installment of SMA, the original Mario Bros. game is packed in for some multiplayer mayhem, so this one is bursting at the seams with fun. Younger players will enjoy their first trip through this game, and older players will smile as they revisit the world of SMB3. This is one of, if not the best platformer ever created, so do yourself a favor and buy this one. You won't be sorry.

You have to see it to believe it, but Mario 3 is the best thing on any machine outside an arcade since, well, whatever used to be the best thing on any machine outside an arcade. Graphics and sound are superb, but the gameplay manages to defy even my highest words of praise! It's near flawless in its utterly stupendous incredibility and absolutely impossible to put down for anything less than a fire alarm - and even then you find yourself weighing up the odds! Mario 3 is so addictive it ought to get a government health warning. Hide the cartridge and people start to get withdrawal symptoms - it's that good! Anyway, why am I sat here writing this when I ought to be perfecting my technique? Sell your dad's socks if you have to, but raise the cash and buy Mario 3 as soon as you possibly can - then remember to thank us for telling you about it first!

But then again, it really doesn't matter how you play it, or what sort of games you like. Super Mario Bros. 3 is utterly, utterly superb. The graphics and sound are brilliant and the size of the quest is mind-boggling (Andy remains boggled to this day). If SMB3 got jammed in my NES and I could never play another game, I really wouldn't care.

This is much more than just a fun game, although it certainly is that, too. This is a significant part of gaming history, one that you can now experience again on the bus, in a plane, or in your doctor's waiting room.

NESNintendo Land (2003)
The skill needed to complete the courses in SMB3 increases much through the game. The first worlds are like a nice walk in the park but the later worlds is the most difficult ever seen in an Mario game! This makes Smb3 a good game for both new videogamers and hardened powerplayers! I can´t praise this game enough so stop reading and go out and buy it right away!!

So is Super Mario Advance 4 worth your gaming dollar? If you're looking for a relatively inexpensive dose of nostalgia, or you've never played Super Mario Bros. 3, then this is an easy choice. If you're expecting remixed levels or sweeping improvements on the game, however, you'll likely be disappointed, because Super Mario Bros. 3 did not get the same treatment as Super Mario Bros. 2 got in the first Super Mario Advance game. That aside, though, for less than $30, you really can't go wrong with this title. They just don't make games like this any more, and this particular game really shows us how far we've come and that you don't need flashy graphics and surrond sound to have a mind-blowing game.
Game Boy AdvanceGamesCollection (Apr 10, 2009)

NESGame Freaks 365 (2006)
SMB 3 on the NES is just a great title, filled with secrets, fun battles against Bowser's bosses, and many items make SMB 3 a must have NES game. If they would remake 5 NES games, SMB 3 should be one of them. If you still have this in your closet, then bring it out and enjoy.
Game Boy AdvanceDeeko (Oct 20, 2003)
Super Mario Brothers Advance 4 is a conundrum... could a game this aged be released to a current generation system and manage to be one of this years hot holiday commodities? The obvious answer is "yes". To be frank, Super Mario Brothers 3 is considered to be the best, most creative Mario game that has ever graced a home system. The GBA incarnation, while lacking any truly new updates in graphics and sound, makes full use of the e-Reader, only adding to the overall potential that the game has to offer. It's perhaps the first game to actually use the peripheral in any truly rewarding sense (though Animal Crossing did a fine job of using it as well). All of these factors create Super Mario Advance 4 and it's an experience that will satisfy any gaming appetite. If you're simply craving a liberal dose of nostalgia or simply looking for a fantastic gaming experience, Super Mario Advance 4 is the way to go. A holiday hit? You know it.

Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Brothers 3 is a complete package and worthy of a purchase.
Game Boy AdvancePortable Review (Oct 23, 2005)
As for replay, this game has plenty of it. First off, while this game may not have a coin collection system, it does have an e-Reader system, which allows you to play levels never seen before. The e-Reader support adds some kind of a collection-type side-quest (despite the fact that you'll have to pay for it and that it's not REALLY in the actual game...). Also, the "Mario Bros. Classic" side-game returns, which brings about two ways to play with your friends.
NESVideo Games (Jun, 1991)

Game Boy AdvanceIGN (Oct 14, 2003)
Everyone has his or her own favorite game in the original Super Mario Bros. series. I stand behind my original belief that Yoshi's Island is the finest 2D platformer ever why do I think that Super Mario Bros. 3 on the GBA is a better game? Expandability. The fact that Nintendo has incorporated hooks that allow players to upload new challenges to the game isn't a new idea...PC games have been doing it for years, and anyone with an Xbox and Live support can do it in games like Splinter Cell But it's really a first for the handheld market, and what's more, Nintendo can do it inexpensively; the new challenges can and will be sold in packs of cards, at least until the end of this year, but the company can also sneak in "special edition" cards in magazines and future GBA boxes to continue the experience.
NESPlay Time (Dec, 1991)
Game Boy AdvanceChrist Centered Game Reviews (Jun 01, 2005)
Mario has long been the king of video games. Representing everything that was, and is, wholesome, fun, and carefree to the world, plus having some really hard levels, the Mario games have crossed multiple genres and platforms, from the platformer to the RPG, from the NES to the Gamecube. This game was the final one on the NES, and the first to introduce the World Map, a staple of later Mario Bros. games, including Yoshi's Story and Super Mario World.
Game Boy Advance64 Power / big.N / N Games (Oct, 2003)

But that's hardly a quibble. This game is a godsend. Like Scarface to Pacino, this game forever secured Mario's legacy, as well as the NES's, and Nintendo's, and humanity's at large.
Game Boy AdvanceNintendo Official Magazine (NOM) UK (Oct, 2003)
SMB 3's transition to Nintendo's handheld has been near-perfectly achieved, but the most important thing is the game has barely aged at all. The level design is spot on and the sheer innovation of the enemies and power-ups is still the best in any game we've ever played. You're reading this review like you don't know this already. It's Super Mario Bros. 3! Stop reading and go GET IT!

This is the most impressive SMA yet with expandability, coupled with the best Mario adventure for the regular NES. GBA owners would be foolish to pass it up.
Super Mario Bros. 3 is the largest, most detailed, graphically superb, audio enhanced, three-meg masterpiece loaded with perfect power-ups and extraordinary execution, most fun-to-play game I've seen on the Nintendo.

Game Boy AdvanceGamekult (Oct 21, 2003)
Game Boy AdvanceNintendojo (2003)
Still, it seems that this game is poised to be a major let-down. Newcomers to the game who are accustomed to the current game generation may be turned off by its astonishingly short playtime and lack of "100% clear" bonuses, while veterans will find very little reason to pick up this version unless they're willing to pony up for the e-Reader cards. It's my fond hope that the Super Mario Advance series will end here. As nice as it is to relive fond goomba-stomping memories, it's high time that Mario and Luigi moved on to something new.
90 (GAF) (Apr 28, 2003)
There are many secrets, powerups and bonuses that can be found througout SMB3, and the game holds up pretty well, even for now. When the game was released as part of the SNES "Super Mario All-stars", it was the one game that went through the least amount of changes. It was simply that good. The only thing that stops this game from getting a 10 is that with so much to do, it's near-impossible to play through the game in one sitting without warping. A save function could've benefitted greatly. Despite this and the huge production run the game received, Super mario Bros. 3 still remains a great find for any NES collector.
Overall, as I said before, I find this to be the best of the series. It's also one of the best 2D platform games you will ever play on the NES, or any system. One of the cool features of this game is the screen in which you control Mario as he selects a level. This little feature was later "borrowed" in quite a few games, such as one of the Adventure Island games and it was also used in later Mario/Wario games (some of the Game Boy adventures that appeared after this, and also SMW itself). Even though it doesn't include the save feature, I enjoy this game more on the NES than I do in the Super Mario All Stars collection on the Super Nintendo. To sum it up, this game is a gem. It doesn't have the slightly more classic/basic feel of SMB, but there are a lot more options and the simple fun is still intact.
WiiGameSpot (Dec 19, 2007)
Those who already love Super Mario Bros. 3 and have the desire to play the original NES version again will be pleased with this Virtual Console release. It's like reconnecting with a best friend that you haven't seen since you were little. Meanwhile, those who haven't yet immersed themselves in its jump-heavy sweetness have been given a golden opportunity to do so. This is 500 Wii points ($5) well spent.
Game Boy AdvanceNintendoWorldReport (Oct 17, 2003)
Nintendo’s egoistical attitude toward multiplayer and gameplay extras in Super Mario Advance 4 is disheartening; still, it is impossible to remain bitter at a nearly perfect conversion of possibly the finest videogame ever made. Those interested solely in the remixed levels that don’t already have the required hardware should probably rethink the purchase. Anyone looking for Super Mario Bros. 3 on the go, however, should snag Super Mario Advance 4 without a second thought.
Game Boy (UK) (Oct 14, 2003)
SMB3 is exactly the game we wanted and expected to get, except now with mid and end-of-world save points. The levels are still as engaging and well thought out as we remember, the boss levels (the bobbing ships!) are still as tricky to navigate, and the raccoon/leaf power-up still lets you soar through the sky and make use of any cloudy portals and other bonuses. Oh, and it's still hatefully unpleasant to see a demonstrably simple level cut you down repeatedly because you went for haste over cautiousness.
Game Boy AdvanceGamePro (US) (Oct 20, 2003)
Admittedly, Super Mario Bros. 3 seems like a weird step back from Super Mario World and Yoshi's Island, two successors to this game that are already available on the Game Boy Advance (if you haven't already, get those games before getting this one they're a little more accessible). But that doesn't make it any less of a classic it's a test of your true gaming mettle, a must for the Mario completist, and validation for your sense of nostalgia.
Game Boy AdvanceGameSpy (Oct 21, 2003)
Given the short list of negatives above, I'd have to say that this is technically the least desirable version of Super Mario Bros. 3. However, the least accomplished version of an awesome game can still be pretty damn great, and such is the case here. Players who missed the first two editions probably won't even notice the shortcomings, and this is the only version of SMB3 that can easily be played on the go.
Game Boy Advance1UP (May 09, 2004)
Mario Advance 4 isn't perfect, but it clearly tries its best to get there. Even with its cropped screen dimensions and the awkwardness and added cost required to access its eCard features, Nintendo has managed to cram a mind-boggling amount of fun onto a tiny cartridge. Whether you were inculcated with SMB3 fanaticism by Fred Savage a decade ago or have lived a deprived life and never touched the game, this is a title that deserves to be in your GBA collection.
Game Boy AdvanceGaming Nexus (Aug 21, 2003)
There’s a part of me that wants to embrace this version of Super Mario Bros. 3 with open arms, and another part of me that feels a bit betrayed that Nintendo didn’t do more with this classic. It’s still the great game that it always ways, and that’s why it’s so easy to recommend, but for once I would like to be here reviewing a 2D Mario game I haven’t played before.
Game Boy AdvanceGameSpot (Oct 17, 2003)
SMB3 purists may be annoyed with some of the minor tweaks that have been made to the original game, but that shouldn't stop them from experiencing this incredible platformer all over again.

For most of the 1980s, there really wasn't such a thing as "prerelease hype" in the video game industry. But that all changed with Super Mario Bros. 3, which not only packed a strong print and television campaign in the US, but had the promotional help of The Wizard, a video-game-themed motion picture that promised frothing young gamers a peek at the next installment in Nintendo's masthead series, before its release. The hype may have been manufactured, but it turned out the game more than deserved it. It delivered interesting new tweaks to the fundamental platformer formula that the original Super Mario Bros. had staked out, and it created the single largest, most fully-realized Mario world that had been seen up to that point.
NESMegablast (1992)
Game Boy AdvanceGamezine (Sep 12, 2003)
Game Boy AdvanceGame Shark (Nov 10, 2003)
Overall Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 is pretty faithful to the Mario All-Stars version in 1993 and does look quite snazzy on the GBA. If you need something to play and want a challenge, this game will give you that familiar challenge you crave. However, if you still know how to beat this game in under an hour or expect significant change since All-Stars, I would suggest looking for something else to play.
WiiWiiDSFrance (Nov 13, 2009)

Playing Super Mario Bros. 3 is a dizzying experience. As one of the finest exponents of the genre, the ride it takes you on is as memorable as it is extraordinary, making it a vital acquisition for lovers of platform games.

On the other hand, if you missed SMB 3, you can add at least one point to the score, pushing the game into the must-have category. It is no coincidence that Super Mario Bros. 3 sent shockwaves through the industry when it was released. By flawlessly mixing so many gameplay elements such as a world map, item collection and management, puzzle-solving, varied level design, platforming action, mini-games, and much more, it stands as a true masterpiece. Super Mario Advance 4 offers everything that made SMB 3 brilliant and wraps it into a nice, visually enhanced package.

Certainly highly recommended if you're a fan of platformers, though if you're new to 'this sort of thing', we recommend you first check out either of the previous Mario Advance titles. And if you've played them all before, then why are you still reading this?

I suggest anybody with a GBA get this game, unless you have one of the other two versions and aren't interested in having a portable version. If you do get it, I also suggest trying to find a used E-reader (or buy a new one) and getting at least the E-reader level cards.
NESN-Force (Dec, 1992)
If you haven't played Super Mario Bros. 3 on your NES, you don't know what you've been missing. Go out and get yourself a copy now - it's the best thing since N-FORCE!

This game is going to have one WIDE audience. I mean, COME ON! It’s a MARIO title! Old fans will snap it up simply because it’s a re-release of and old classic they enjoyed years ago. New fans will check it out because it’s (a) a Mario game, and (b) something they missed out on all those years ago. And e-Reader fans will want it considering it has e-Reader support. So this game won’t be hurting for a fan base.
