Unlike the days of the 16-bit 2D platformer craze, when Mario and Sonic games were copied by every game developer with several truly admirable results, very few game companies have been able to mix the ingredients just right to build a 3D platform game of any real merit. Like you, I played Mario 64 with my jaw on the floor, giddy with the thought that this was only the first of what would surely be dozens of awesome 3D platform adventures. Little was I to know that I would have to wait six years to once again experience the perfect blend of 3D control, presentation, exploration and reward. Super Mario Sunshine, while perhaps not quite the revolutionary product that its predecessor was, is without a doubt, the finest and most enjoyable 3D platform adventure currently available.

Gawd knows how Nintendo keep on reinventing the wheel, but we're not kidding when we say they've done it again. Every moment of Mario Sunshine is a playful ounce of magic that sets your imagination on fire and makes your gaming mojo bubble up like an erupting volcano.
Even though the story sounds good for Super Mario Sunshine that’s not what's going to wow gamers. It's the fun, exploration, adventure, and action, platform gameplay that has always made us give hundereds of hours of our lives to Mario every time a new game is released in the series. Nintendo seems to have redone a lot of the gameplay, and it’s looking a lot like: Mario 64’s Properly Evolved Version that Shigeru Miyamoto always calls it. But as much as he say's it's not. I here to tell you this game is just as much "Revolution" as it is "Evolution". And if your going to travel across Se Life villages, Volcano’s, Snowy Mountains, Green valleys, and best of all Beaches. Mario Sunshine is definitely one this years best games.

In this episode of "Extended Play," we review the latest adventure of everyone's favorite plumber. Whenever a game is a sequel to a successful title, it falls under extra scrutiny, fueled by the expectations of gamers. So when a game must live up to the standards set by 20 years of quality titles, expect every aspect of the game to be picked apart by the gaming community. "Super Mario Sunshine" achieves the impressive feat of coming through such heavy critiquing with flying colors.
Playing this game makes me happy. I guess that’s the most important thing when all is said and done. I can’t remember when I had so much plain old FUN while playing a game, and not just in certain places but almost non-stop. Super Mario Sunshine is a triumph of game design. It is the best single-player experience I’ve had in ages. It’s easily the best GameCube title yet, and arguably the best Mario game ever. The wait was worth it...oh man, so worth it! Get this game and fall in love with it just like I have.
The exploration and puzzles are as appealing and diverse as ever, and the genius of design within always apparent. I also like the progressive 'shines & coins' system of challenges and rewards (the cloudy weather clears as you advance through the game), but due to a surprisingly steep difficulty curve, some really tricky bosses and a game camera that simply won't behave, SMS will drive some less tolerant players mad. Also many gamers won't 'get' the abstract (even weird) nature of the Mario games, and of course, there's not enough big guns in it for my personal taste. Apart from those quibbles I think we're talking true genius here. A worthy follow-up to one of the best games ever, and a substantial gaming challenge.
Game Informer Magazine
This is aged-in-oak proof that a game doesn’t need to be original to win over the hearts of gamers. When a new Mario game hits the market, there’s an underlying expectation that it’ll revolutionize gaming as we know it. Assuredly, this statement may seem like a stretch, but if you gauge the impact that each Mario release has made, it’s not so crazy after all. Think of this: If Nintendo never released Super Mario 64, what would the shape of 3D gaming be like? It’s a scary thought, especially when you take into account that almost every platformer on the market is in some way influenced by this legendary release. Of course, this was six years ago, and given the lengthy absence, everyone anticipated that Mario’s reemergence would bring about another mind-boggling gaming revolution.
Super Mario Sunshine is an excellent title, and almost certainly the very best GameCube title to date. It’s unfortunate that not only did the game direction take a more conservative route in sticking to the formula laid out in Super Mario 64, but also that reaction to this fantastic title in Japan has been rather muted. However, Super Mario Sunshine proves itself to rise above being merely a simple rehash and make a serious bid for game of the year. No self-respecting Cube owner should go without buying a copy of this hugely engrossing title.
Despite its sometimes frustrating camera and its sometimes wacked-out collision detection, Super Mario Sunshine offers gamers the ability to ride a flesh-colored Yoshi that spits a stream of fluorescent purple fruit juice at fat island-dwelling creatures, who then proceed to make blubbering sounds as they shake themselves dry. That alone, my friends, may well be enough to supply game designers with ideas for the next six years and beyond.
If you're even casually into platformers, Sunshine will have you wrapped around its little finger for a long, long time. This game has mass appeal, deep and challenging gameplay, and a whole lot of charm and fan service. If you don't mind the minor annoyance of F.L.U.D.D.'s voice or the occasional insignificant camera problem, you will fall in love with this game. The wait is over at long, long last.
Sliced Gaming (GameBiz)
Of all the games in my Gamecube collection, this is the one title that draws me back in, time after time. Mario Sunshine is utterly playable, and oozes quality. The addition of the FLUDD backpack was a wise decision, and really opens the 'fludd-gates' (sorry.) for some clever level design.
Game Freaks 365
Overall, Super Mario Sunshine is a redone, reformed, and reconstructed version of Mario 64. Even though this holds to be true, the need for a Mario game is great, especially one this good. Believe me, this is way better than Mario 64 and I am a Mario 64 advocate. If you don't have a Gamecube yet, then THIS is finally your final reason to get one, other than all of those other reasons like Animal Crossing, Eternal Darkness, Metroid Prime, Resident Evil, and much more! You have no more excuses for not having one!
Indeed, learning to side-somersault, wall-kick, reverse-hover, and land on an outcrop the programmers thought was high enough can lead you to enter or complete stages out of order. You haven't played Super Mario Sunshine until you've run and sprayed water from your nozzle, slide stomach first along the ground, leapt up onto a wall, bounced off it, and hovered onto the building's roof. While second-rate developers are loading up their increasingly lame "animal avatars" with 30-plus power-ups that haven't been completely thought out or developed, Nintendo once again shows us how it's done: Take one character, round him out with four different nozzles, and create dozens of moves around each similar device to create countless variations on hovering, Turboing, squirting, and rocketing. That's the pinnacle of immersive gameplay in the year 2002 right there.
You can't hear his name without thinking of videogames. He's not just a mascot for Nintendo -- he's an icon for the entire industry. Recognizable around the entire globe, he is what Mickey Mouse is to cartoons. We haven't even mentioned his name, but you already know it. Mario. It's hard to own a videogame system and not know about one of the most influential franchises ever. Most gamers grew up with the Italian plumber and have come to respect the series for its consistent quality and defining traits. Where Mario goes, the rest follow. He led many into the side-scrolling world of 2D and ventured boldly without fail into the complicated realm of 3D. In brand names we trust, and Mario has always led the pack with this star power. Now, after nearly a six year absence, he's back again in a whole new adventure, debatably named Super Mario Sunshine for its vacation theme.
Overall, you just have to like the game... Heck, I totally love the game. It warrants a full-price purchase and should leave every Nintendo fan grinning from ear to ear. While it may not fully meet the anticipated hype, it does meet my expectations and I feel completely sublime.
The Video Game Critic
The music is wonderful, and many sound effects are throwbacks to classic Super Mario titles. You can save you place at any time, and the game has a reasonable learning curve. And last but not least, Yoshi is back! What more can you ask for? Well, a better camera system for one thing! You'll need to wrestle with it constantly, and sometimes even a simple jump can be difficult to execute due to the awkward camera angles. I'm also not a big fan of the new "triple jump" move. Nevertheless, Mario Sunshine is too innovative and fun to let the minor flaws like those rain on the parade.
At the end of the day, Super Mario Sunshine was definitely worth the wait. It’s the most fun I’ve had on my GameCube so far, with the notable exception of Animal Crossing. Mario Sunshine has more to offer than any other action platform game on the market today. Nintendo has injected the game with fun, something many games seem to lack nowadays. It’s refreshing to see Nintendo hasn’t lost its touch when it comes to its high profile titles. This one’s definitely a keeper that any self-respecting GameCube owner simply must have in his or her library.
In the same way that Super Mario World 2 doesn't directly feel like a Mario game, Super Mario Sunshine engenders a "side-story" feel. It lacks an epic quality - the knock down, drag out, "entire Mushroom Kingdoom at stake" vibe that has been common in so many other Mario games. Nonetheless, the game does deliver lots and lots of fun in an artistically rich dose of 3D platforming. Besides, it's great to get back to what Mario does best - jumpin on-a things!
¿Es perfecto? No. ¿Podría tener mejores gráficos? Ciertamente. ¿Mejor sonido? Pues sí. ¿Podría ser más divertido? ...
Exactly like Mario 64, then, and all fans ever wanted was a sequel. They’ve finally got an expansion pack. They’ve waited a while.
Six years, in fact. It’s startling, really. Developers have had six years to build on SM64, and they have failed to do anything but create shadows. Everyone was waiting for Nintendo’s guiding light, and it arrives, and it’s far above its imitators, but it’s some way below its inspiration. Super Mario Sunshine doesn’t score SM64’s ten; not because it’s a sequel, and not because it fails to emulate the dimensional shift, but because, shine for star and star for shine, it’s not as good. It’s not going to change videogaming; it’s the second best platform game of all time. Of all time. Celebrate that.
Super Mario Sunshine is a title that undeservedly gets overlooked when Super Mario Galaxy is described as “the true sequel to Super Mario 64”, but Super Mario Sunshine still shines brightly as a classic Mario adventure.
Overall, Super Mario Sunshine is nothing short of brilliant. It has its fair share of highly frustrating niggles, but they are almost totally eclipsed by the real joy and excitement the game can conjure up inside you with such alarming frequency. To my mind it isn't really that much like Mario 64 at all, but while it does many new things it keeps the very best of the series' design conventions and is undoubtedly worthy of the Mario name.
Game Over Online
There is no doubt that Super Mario Sunshine is a great game, but whether it is worthy of purchasing is almost completely dependant on how much you enjoyed Super Mario 64. In other words yes, you will get your money’s worth. Sorry to say though, after waiting six full years for a true sequel to be released, a few gameplay tweaks and a graphical revamp is not enough to make up for the lapse of time between games. Nevertheless, Mario is back and I’ll take what I can get. This is one of the best games currently out for the GameCube, it’s just not as innovative as I had hoped it would be.
Adrenaline Vault, The (AVault)
Super Mario Sunshine can’t live up to the reputation of Super Mario 64, but then we have to wonder if any follow-up could. When you look past the shadow of its ancestor, you will still find a game that’s rock solid, fun to play and a must-have for any GameCube owner. While there are still a few glitches in the camera work, and not every segment is brilliant, this title contains enough moments of unrequited fun to keep you coming back for more. As with most modern releases, you can beat Super Mario Sunshine without finishing its full 120-Shine quest, but chances are you’ll come back for more after you’ve hammered the last boss, if only to spend a bit more time flipping, hosing and generally having a blast. Even if it weren’t the only solid platformer on the system, Super Mario Sunshine would be well worth your dollar. As it is, there’s no reason not to pick it up.
Super Mario Sunshine didn't possess the same "wow" factor that the game before it or the game after it had, and in retrospect, it isn't quite as good when compared to other contemporary games as Super Mario 64 was in its day and Super Mario Galaxy is when compared to other Nintendo Wii platform games. Regardless, it is a thoroughly enjoyable Mario title that, while extremely difficult in places, is nonetheless a title that most gamers will have a lot of fun with. The FLUDD gimmick is a neat twist that adds more gameplay depth to the standard series formula, and the plethora of ways that players can earn their Shine Sprites adds a great deal of variety into the mix. Give that the game has earned Player's Choice status and should currently be available as at a discounted price, it definitely is a title worth picking up, especially since gamers can use an old Gamecube controller to play this 2002 release on the Nintendo Wii.
All Game Guide
To be perfectly blunt, Super Mario Sunshine is hardly the groundbreaking title players have come to expect from the franchise, as it follows the blueprint of Super Mario 64 almost to the letter. Yet as textbook a sequel as Super Mario Sunshine is, it still happens to be as enjoyable and addictive as Super Mario 64 was when it first appeared in 1996, minus the sheer wonder you experienced while journeying across a virtually uncharted 3D realm.

All said, is Super Mario Sunshine worth the purchase? Definitely. Is it a great game? Absolutely. Will it set the world on fire like just about every Mario game before it? 'Fraid not.
Nintendo's software lineup has always revolved around a core group of major characters who appear in games that, more often than not, turn into system sellers. You always get the impression that games featuring these characters are going to be given a little extra polish to ensure that everything comes together just right, even if it means that the game has to be delayed for months or years at a time. So, inevitably, games like Super Mario Sunshine are eagerly anticipated. Super Mario Sunshine is the first truly major release on Nintendo's GameCube, and it is the first starring role for Nintendo's most recognizable character on the system. Once you get past the excitement over the fact that the latest Mario game is finally here, you'll find a game that's generally pleasing but heavily reliant on a few new moves that seem more like gimmicks than gameplay innovations.
Sci-Fi Online (The Sci-Fi Channel)
All in all, this game is worthy of the Mario title and is incredible fun to play. However, there are some inexcusable bugs that should have been fixed before releasing this on a hungry market.
Is Super Mario Sunshine the worst video game I've ever played? Absolutely not: there is actually plenty of fun to be had, as long as you're willing to undergo bouts of frustration amidst that joy. Is Super Mario Sunshine the worst Mario game I've ever played? Well, it will not rank as my favourite, that's for sure. I much prefer the classic 2D platformers of olde, with the noted exception of any edutainment titles he was forced into. The strange thing is that I feel as though the GameCube editions of some of Nintendo's top franchises have been relatively disappointing. For example, I love the Legend of Zelda series, but Wind Waker was the first game I wouldn't recommend to people. As for the Mario series, I feel somewhat similar about Super Mario Sunshine. It's a alright game in its own right, but it certainly did not evoke the high spirits that other games have done in the past. Or perhaps I am just picky. ...No, it's definitely the game.
Super Mario Sunshine is an okay game. The controls are solid, like in all the Mario games. It will keep you occupied for many hours, and is very fun. But, to be blunt, it is not nearly the best game for 'Cube out there.
Upon finishing this title, I had mixed opinions of the game. While I enjoyed the addition of FLUDD, I found that controlling him was somewhat annoying and often detracted from an enjoyable experience. My initial wonderment at the graphics was very quickly replaced by boredom with the repetitive nature of the levels. The happiness I gained when I realized I'd be controlling Yoshi was almost immediately replaced with nausea when I realized how little his character added to the game. Throw in somewhat decent sound effects plagued by repetition and the lack of a decent soundtrack and you'll find yourself liking the game less and less.
