Taken as it is, however, and speaking as someone who never played the Wii U version, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a pure delight. I've been away for games for the best part of a month, because life got in the way, but this was the perfect game to "water" my "plants". It's as much fun as video games get - a bright, breezy, uncynical, accessible, game that just wants to make players happy. And it did. It cheered me right up.
GamesRadar (Apr 20, 2017)
Three years on: still a classic, and with its biggest weakness fixed. If you own a Switch it’s a no-brainer – especially if it’s your first time.
Cheat Code Central (Apr 20, 2017)
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a game that rekindles a fire you may not have even realized was fading. This racing game is absolutely incredible. It takes Mario Kart 8, an absolutely fantastic game, then improves upon it by offering the sort of Battle arenas and experiences we adored in previous games, the ability to play it anywhere in any way, and various quality of life adjustments. Everything has been tightened, fine tuned and is firing on all cylinders. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe isn’t just here to help you coast through the launch window, it is a game that will offer comfortable cruising for years to come.
The Telegraph (Apr 28, 2017)
With Battle Mode restored, the bumper pack of tracks and the neat nips and tucks, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the fullest and most finely-tuned entry the series has seen. As well it should be. While there can be legitimate eyebrow-raising at full price for a three year old port, there is enough work here to offer value to even the most seasoned MK8 player. And crucially for Nintendo and the Switch, it is a splendid celebration of its host console’s charms.
Nintendojo (May 08, 2017)
As I pointed out above, this is the same exceptional racing game that bowed in 2014, but as my review hopefully attests, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the definitive version of it. Everything that made Mario Kart 8 special has returned and been amplified, and the additions (including new characters, plus one secret one that I won’t spoil) make for an even richer and varied experience. Along with Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a must-have for Switch owners. It’s a party on a cartridge, but even played solo it’s a blast. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe will be played in perpetuity for many years to come, and will do a wonderful job of tiding fans over until the releases of Arms and Splatoon 2 (something I had doubts about — yeah, those doubts are officially gone). You officially have two games that make a Switch worth buying, so get to it if you haven’t!
The Video Game Critic (May 11, 2017)
Once I started playing Mario Kart 8 Deluxe it was hard to stop. The gameplay is well balanced, although I wish there were more ways to defend yourself from shells. The controls feel great and the revving vibration is remarkable. Unless you are absolutely sick of Mario Kart 8 for the Wii U (not likely), this Deluxe version is a good investment.

Nintendo Life (Apr 20, 2017)
It's the definitive Mario Kart 8 experience, content-rich and a delightful feast of comedic, cartoonish karting action. It's a game that continually raises a smile and, occasionally, induces that trademark Mario Kart rage as shells strike and positions are lost. It's addictive and unifying, unfiltered fun that draws in anyone daring enough to take up the wheel. If you're a Switch owner, it's an easy choice.

Though I found things I didn't absolutely love about Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, I do believe it's the best Mario Kart game since Double Dash!! on the GameCube. If you give it a shot and like what you find early on (and there's a good chance you will), you should discover numerous reasons to return night after night, for dozens or maybe even hundreds of hours of total enjoyment. And since you can head online to race against friends or strangers, compete locally with up to 7 friends (if you have the hardware) or even tackle everything all by yourself, there's no reason the thrills can't last forever. I just wish the game had been absolutely perfect. Is that really so much to ask?
Switch Player (May 04, 2017)
Absolutely essential for Switch owners who love fun, racing, and didn't buy it on the Wii U. Packed with content, this is the definitive Mario Kart experience - and it's hard to see how it will be topped.

Mario Kart 8 was already a great game on the Wii U. Now on the Nintendo Switch it's even better. Bringing everything from the previous games into one package and putting it on a new system was a great call. This is the one Mario spin-off series that always delivers consistent thrills, fun gameplay, and also keeps things simple. If you want to be great at Mario Kart, there's certainly challenge and depth. If you want to just have some friends over and have a good time, it's also here. Putting aside some small online frustrations, this is a flawless game, which you can now take with you anywhere. Unless you already own this for Wii U, and don't plan on letting go of that system, this is an absolute must buy for anyone who owns a Nintendo Switch.
JeuxActu (Apr 20, 2017)
GameSpot (Apr 20, 2017)
For Mario Kart fans, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe might look like more of the same with small Double Dash-inspired tweaks. But thanks to a series of updates both big and almost unseen, it's the version of Mario Kart to get. If you don't own a Wii U or skipped out on Mario Kart 8 the first time around--or even if you've played it before--Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is worth your time. It plays beautifully on Switch in both handheld and docked mode, and its core racing is as exciting as ever. And, most notably, it completely revamps the original's lackluster Battle Mode, rounding out an already great racing game.

There’s not too much more that can be said about Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. It is effectively a “remaster” from the Wii U original to the Nintendo Switch. The extra content is great, and the addition of the battle mode back into the game is the masterstroke; I do believe that a sizable number of people will spend more time playing that than the racing game itself. As Nintendo’s second big release on the Switch following on from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, I have no trouble believing that this will solidify the console’s rapidly-growing reputation of offering far more than people thought it would prior to launch. It might be a flawed experience, but that’s almost irrelevant when you consider just how much of it there really is on offer. This is how you do a “HD remaster”.
GameCrate (May 03, 2017)
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the definitive Mario Kart experience. It’s got the most complete roster of characters, tons of tracks, a litany of game modes, and an ultra-polished presentation mixed with pitch-perfect gameplay. A must play for all Switch owners.
Attack of the Fanboy (Apr 20, 2017)
Mario Kart 8 was without a doubt one of the best games to release on the Wii U and now it has been improved on even further on Nintendo Switch. The game performs better than it ever has, this time with a crisper look that really shines both in docked and handheld forms. While it is disappointing that no new race tracks were added, the completely overhauled Battle Mode complete with eight arenas makes up for that easily, making Mario Kart 8 Deluxe the definitive Mario Kart experience to date.

The Jimquisition (May 03, 2017)
I say this without hyperbole and not as a stealth insult to anything else – I quite genuinely believe this to be the finest addition to the Switch’s library so far. I can’t argue with how much I’ve been playing it and how much I want to keep playing it, even as I type this. It’s exactly this kind of compulsive experience the Switch needed, and if that had to be the result of a remaster, so be it.

It’s a damn fine remaster of a truly magnificent game.

It has Dry Bones in it, or haven’t you heard?

Gamekult (Apr 20, 2017)
TechRaptor (May 25, 2017)
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe gives players the full package right from the starting line. With an enormous roster of both characters and raceways to select from MK8 Deluxe brings over all of the content from the Wii U edition of the game and then goes and adds more content. While those wanting the single player experience might not find too much to race for, as a multiplayer title this is a great one to challenge your friends to.
