The Testament of Sherlock Holmes

The Sherlock Holmes series from Frogwares is overall very impressive, offering the best production values of any modern adventure I can think of. The Testament of Sherlock Holmes is no exception to that string of successes. I don't know if it's the best game in the series since I've only played Nemesis and Testament and the demos of most of the others, but it's certainly one of the best adventure games that will come out this year.

The Testament of Sherlock Holmes is exactly that: a testament to the care and attention Frogwares have paid to the Sherlock Holmes name for nearly ten years. It’s the culmination of the developer's own growth as well as feedback from critics and fans alike, and is sure to impress both in bucketloads. From the sumptuous locations to the intriguing plot, from the comfortably familiar characters to the multiple control schemes to suit any preference, the game ticks all the boxes for a truly first-class package. Add to that the more accessible puzzle approach and you've got an appealing package for old and new fans alike. Sherlock Holmes may never have behaved this badly before, but it’s possibly his finest hour.

Frogwares have done an excellent job of telling the Sherlock Holmes stories and, for the most part, the Testament of Sherlock Holmes fits that pattern perfectly. There are a few linguistic missteps in the dialog (and in the naming of the game itself) that bring the final grade down a notch, but the really impactful error is in the ending of the story. I'm so conflicted about this ending that I feel I have to split my final grade for this game. So it's B+ if you're a Sherlock purist, like me; or A- if you're a little more forgiving of interpretive storytelling, as this really is a very good game.

Frogwares' Sherlock Holmes series has been hit-or-miss with past installments. Despite a few dubious design choices and iffy controls, The Testament of Sherlock Holmes proves to be both a good start for newcomers and a welcomed return for longtime fans of the series.

Dank der starken Technik und der Ego-Perspektive fühlte ich mich beinahe wie ins heruntergekommene London des Jahres 1898 versetzt. Auch die Detektivarbeit macht Spaß: Es ist richtig unterhaltsam, am Tatort herumzuschnüffeln und die Indizienkette Stück für Stück auf dem Notizblock zusammenzufügen. Leider haben die Entwickler das Spiel zu sehr mit unpassenden Minispielen gestreckt: Warum ist beinahe jede noch so einfache Tür mit einem eigentümlichen Spezial-Mechanismus verschlossen? Und warum schwankt der Schwierigkeitsgrad so stark? Oft kam ich auf Anhieb auf die richtige Lösung, manchmal erst nach sehr langer Zeit.
