Some games grab you and bring you firmly into their world. With its dynamic lighting, great physics, and reactive world, Ion Storm?s Deus Ex: Invisible War was one of those games, and we thought it was one of the best games last year. As awesome as it was, though, it?s now clear that Invisible War was more than just a great game: It was a dress rehearsal for Thief: Deadly Shadows.

Back in 1998 Looking Glass Studios launched a new genre in gaming, the “stealth simulation”. The late 90’s was a time when FPS games were flourishing. Quake, Doom, Heretic, Hexen, Duke Nukem, and countless other titles were all the rage, but Looking Glass decided to try something different.

Put simply, Thief III, sorry, Thief: Deadly Shadows is a fantastic game in its own right and a worthy sequel that has arguably been worth the wait. It won’t be for everyone, but if you possess a little patience and are looking for some unbeatable atmosphere (at least one level deserves some kind of award for atmosphere so thick you couldn’t cut it with a knife), then it’s my pleasure to recommend it.

Thief 3 is a worthy successor to the Thief games of 1998 and 2000, Garrett is back and sporting a new coat and toys.

Deadly Shadows on kunniakkaan laadukasta jatkoa Thief-sarjalle.

This is a very unique and interesting stealth game. It is fairly easy to get into and will provide many hours of entertainment. Don't miss out on this, there is so much fun to be had in this title. A must have for thief fans.

FOR CENTURIES THE CITY has stood, a bastion of civilisation in the wilderness. Poised on the knife's edge between the corruption within and the external threat of pagan forces it is a dark, magical and ultimately dangerous place. But it is also perfect grounds for a skilled thief to ply his trade.

Instead of run-and-gun action titles, the "Thief" series focuses on stealth and cunning -- consider them "3-D sneakers" instead of "3-D shooters."

When the original Thief: The Dark Project hit PCs back in 1998, it revolutionized stealth gameplay in a way that no other game had. It provided an unparalleled level of immersion, requiring that gamers pay attention to such elements as sound and lighting in order to complete their missions as Garrett, a wily and cunning thief. The release of a great sequel in 2000 only served to briefly satiate the series’ fans, as everyone wanted more. However, the game’s developer, Looking Glass studios, folded shortly after the release of Thief II, so it seemed as though a third entry in the Thief series would never happen.

Unlike many gamers on the market, I have always been a great fan of stealth games and The Thief series has created a way to fill that gaming need. On top of that, I get to steal stuff. Thief and Thief 2 have earned a place among the greats of PC gaming. As such, I have to hold my breath when it comes to Thief 3. Sequels to such excellent games, especially if it is the third in the series, tend to fall from their pedestals. Driv3r did it, Lords of the Realm 3 did it, and so I began to fear that Thief 3 would suffer the same fate.

Finally, the game also excels in the story department. While in most games you’re presented with a bare bones story merely for the sake of giving you some abstract reason for what you are doing, but Thief is different. You’re presented with a very compelling, well thought out story that keeps you driving forward. As simple as this may sound, the story of the game really will add a lot to your enjoyment of this game, as well as helping with the immersion factor.

In the years since Looking Glass created the stealth genre, it's gravitated more towards action, with Splinter Cell, Hitman, and Tenchu always leaving the option, however small, for a "guns blazing" scenario. Deadly Shadows, however, is not stealth action. The pace is gradual--so gradual, in fact, that if I hadn't been reviewing this game, I probably would have given up after a few sessions. I'm glad I stuck with it, though. The goodness creeps up on you. It takes a while for Deadly Shadows to get going, but once it does, it will grip you.

Even though Thief: Deadly Shadow lacks more polish in certain areas, and especially in the AI department, the fact remains that this is one very enjoyable and immersive PC game with plenty to offer to the fans of the series. The background story is great, the fantasy world is rich and enthralling, and the ability to explore the open-ended environment during intense and fun missions will certainly have you playing this one till you've finished it. Again, the third-person view is a non-issue and if you crank up the difficulty level to hard and endure some silly AI issues, I'm sure you'll have a blast playing this game. But...buy it - don't steal it. Garrett may be a master thief, but you're not. (This has been a Public Service Announcement by the Jolly AT Editors).

I've pillaged around in the Thief universe's perpetual darkness again with Ion Storm's "Thief: Deadly Shadows," and while I enjoyed myself and the bag of goodies on my back fattened with each long, challenging mission, a few of its contents were frankly a pain to carry around.

Thief: Deadly Shadows definitely has its moments, and then it has things like its artificial intelligence issues and frequent loading times. The game was developed jointly for the PC and Xbox and feels a bit out of place on both platforms, as though sacrifices needed to be made in both cases. Fans playing the PC version will wonder why the developer bothered to incorporate an optional behind-the-back, third-person perspective, which works pretty well and looks pretty good but isn't nearly as atmospheric and ultimately isn't as useful as the first-person view, which lets you see and hear the world in clearer detail. Those playing the Xbox version of the game will frown at the sluggish, often choppy frame rate, which represents an obvious compromise that was made in exchange for the dynamic lighting and other fancy special effects.

One of the many reasons why 1998 was such a groundbreaking year for gaming is Thief: The Dark Project, a game that helped invent what's now commonly referred to as the stealth action genre. Though two other noteworthy stealth action games were released that same year--Metal Gear Solid and Tenchu: Stealth Assassins--Thief's brand of stealth was the most convincing, and it went on to become the most influential. The original developer of Thief and its similar sequel is unfortunately no longer in business, but Eidos and Ion Storm thankfully snatched up the rights and have finally delivered a new chapter in the series that's suitable for longtime Thief fans and newcomers alike. Like its predecessors, the new Thief: Deadly Shadows features a memorable protagonist, a great setting, and some very interesting missions. It also happens to suffer from a variety of miscellaneous, minor flaws. These are unfortunate, since Thief: Deadly Shadows is great game, for the most part.

If there’s one last problem to cite, it’s how repetitive the game can be. Most of the game follows the hide-and-go-thief pattern. Despite the large arsenal, you will find yourself using just a few items, Then again, stealth is also the best part of the game. Lurking in the shadows, waiting as the enemy passes you by—it’s during these quiet moments that the game glows.

Überthief Garret is back in Thief: Deadly Shadows, the latest entry in Warren Spector and Ion Storm's cult series. It has to be said the third- and first-person game gets off to a rocky start and has a few continuing problems, but if you're willing to stick it out through a couple of slow-paced early levels, it quickly hooks you and won't let go.

The slow-burning story is fun, and the dedication to stealth results in game mechanics that easily surpass the competition. It's an essential purchase for anyone who values an atmosphere of great gameplay over body counts.

Minor difficulties aside, Deadly Shadows is a fitting continuation of an excellent series. Without the guns, gadgets, and radars of modern-themed games, it's a much tenser experience, and the cunning level design and excellent sound effects draw you into its world. The variable difficulty levels mean no one should get seriously stuck, but there's still plenty of challenge for those that want it. The master thief has returned to steal your time -- we advise you let him!

There's something so pleasingly honed about the overall structure of Deadly Shadows and how that integrates with the gameplay mechanic - and in terms of getting your money's worth, there are few games that suck you in quite as much. Playing for long periods never felt like an obligation - there was rarely a time when we were playing just to see what came next, but more because we wanted to. If it wasn't for the dreadful lack of optimisation we'd be celebrating Thief's arrival on console a whole lot more, but even so, Deadly Shadows is the kind of console game you could have only dreamed of a few years back and it definitely bodes well for the future. For now, it's almost the complete package and warrants your attention.

As a devotee of the first two games in the Thief series, I was looking to get my hands on Thief: Deadly Shadows (the third and likely final entry in the series) long before it went gold. I replayed the other games in anticipation, and tried to brush off nagging concerns that this game was going to be a dismal console port like its Ion Storm-released cousin, the dreadfully disappointing Deus Ex: Invisible War. Why was I afraid? Because this was the first Thief game to be released simultaneously on X-Box and PC (this review is of the PC version; I am poor and do not own an X-Box, sorry to say), and when it comes to simultaneous console/PC releases, it’s usually the PC version that gets the shaft (witness the aforementioned DE:IW).

One of the things I've learned over the years is that the tone of a review can be very important. Since I'm going to spend considerable time in this review listing things that were annoying or flawed about the latest version of the Thief franchise, I thought it was important to establish something up front: Thief: Deadly Shadows is a terrific game. All of the stealth gameplay, intricate level design, Byzantine story branches, and delightfully larcenous action makes a welcome return in this edition. The godfather of stealth-action games is back. Unfortunately, while Thief: Deadly Shadows stands as an equal to any of the previous games in the series, it doesn't exceed them -- nor does it move the franchise forward as much as it was obviously designed to do.

The things Thief: Deadly Shadows does right, it does very well, and some very good stealth gameplay can be found here. However, you can’t help but notice the flaws. The City could have been much larger with more to explore, Garrett could have used a lot of new moves, and the optimization issues will almost certainly drive you a little nuts. Even though Deadly Shadows is a fun game, a myriad of smaller problems keep it from truly stealing the show.

Despite sensationally attractive visuals and familiar gameplay techniques that have worked for other games, Thief doesn't have the innovation or sound mechanics that gamers demand and can easily get from titles like Splinter Cell.

I found Thief: Deadly Shadows more fun than not, but the repetitive nature and framerate problems dampened my enjoyment. I couldn't help feeling that it was a PC game slapped on a console. The pokey turning rate, long load times and saving/loading blues would be mostly or fully solved on the series' native platform. The Xbox version of Thief: Deadly Shadows is a decent console port of what I understand to be a somewhat better-executed PC game. That said, it's worth a play if you like stealth gameplay and don't mind playing the second-best version.
