Vraiment une belle réussite. J'en redemande !

The graphics and sound are good, with non-stop action from start to finish. Tiger Road is a good addition to an Atari ST library.

Snif! Snif! Snif!

Dare you think it? Can you believe it? Could it ever make sense? Can you cope? What do you mean with what? With Ken D Fish, that's what. Yeah, looks like our very own loveable, cuddly, harmless and everso innocent Ken D Fish has a pretty shady distant past.

TurboGrafx-16ACE (Advanced Computer Entertainment)
Good as Tiger Road is it belongs to Capcom's 1987 catalogue and has been bested both in the arcades and on the Engine since. Watch this space.

Predictably, the graphics here are fairly close to the coin-op's, especially the well-animated and well-drawn character sprites. Atmospheric sound effects add to the action - all it needs is a dose of extra challenge, and it would be a great game.

The backgrounds are often impressive, but diminutive sprites make the action confusing when it's fast and furious. At least the gameplay keeps interest burning for a while - particularly if the droning in-game music is switched off!!

I am all for simplicity, but this is a bit too simple for a beat ‘em up isn’t it? You are a sturdy little fellow whose job it is to get to the end of the game.

For all its faults, Tiger Road does have a certain charm, but the limited gameplay and sloppy bugs (such as the floating corpse) become more and more irritating. The sleeve claims that Tiger Road is "practically four games rolled into one". It looks more like one game stretched into four. The package includes a voucher for entry into a competition to win a trip to Silicon Valley, but even this isn't enough to revive a poor game with every limited lasting appeal.

If you accept the blocky graphics and at times messy use of colour there's some vestige of a good axe romp within, although it may not look it.

Though the graphics and sounds are well-done, they're not quite up to the standards set by earlier Turbo titles. Still, Tiger Road is an enjoyable contest, and it should be a hit with former Nintendo owners who are looking for something similar to classic NES games like Kung Fu, Kid Niki or Radical Ninja.

"Ryo Ken Oh's gone and done it now, hasn't he?" "What do you mean? What's he done?" "Well he's swiped all the children from the local village, and someone's got to rescue them! Who else is going to play computer games otherwise? Go on, off you jolly well go" "Oh, alright then. But where to?"

TurboGrafx-16Electronic Gaming Monthly (EGM)
Tiger Road is another middle-of-the-road fighting game that introduces your character into multitude of vertical and horizontal scrolling adventures. The action is nothing revolutionary, but it is presented well and supported by some clean graphics and sound.

Atari STThe One
A brighter colour scheme makes this version ever-so-slightly more impressive graphically than the Amiga. Otherwise the gameplay remains the same, but the unimpressive sound is a real lot-down, consisting of tinny digitised sword-clashes and title music. Not surprisingly it's a two-disk affair, but swapping has been kept to a minimum.

AmigaThe One
The sprites shuffle along unconvincingly and at times seem to be "floating" across the screen, while the black outline around most of the figures only help to make them look even more distant from the backdrops. A shame really, as if Tiger Road had same extra levels, weapons or gameplay elements it could have been outstanding.
52
Amstrad CPCACE (Advanced Computer Entertainment)
The Amstrad version is colourful, if slightly chunky, and quite comfortable in use. However, the strategic aspect is severly underplayed, and it's quite often a question of pressing the fire like crazy, or simply jumping out of the way. It's fun for a while, but not likely to cause much of a stir among devotees of the genre.

ZX SpectrumThe Games Machine (UK)
No risk of imagining you're in the arcades here - practically the only use of colour is in horizontal strips across the screen, which makes things confusing and helps the game no more than monochrome would. Jerky graphics also let down the gameplay, which in itself is adequate.

Atari STThe One for ST Games
Never a classic, Tiger Road now can't hold its own amongst the likes of Turrican and Gods, even at this price.

"Tiger Road", claims US Gold, "is a games legend in the history of software". Perhaps it meant a legend such as the Mary Celeste - a big box with nothing worthwhile inside.

It is a shame because Tora e no Michi looks good and can be fun to play, but the countless gameplay flaws and the brutal difficulty level just ruined it for me.

The controls are responsive, but no match for the relentless armies you face. Enemies appear from out of nowhere, and they're always pouncing on your head, where you are completely vulnerable (you can't attack up!). Also annoying is how these thugs constantly regenerate, so once you defeat an enemy, you turn around and he's right there again! One of the better stages has you actually flying around a series of obstacles - sort of a precursor to Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. I also enjoyed the bonus "training sessions", which challenge you to perform feats like putting out fire with your weapon. But these novelties can't save Tiger Road's poorly-designed levels and unforgiving gameplay.
