PlayStationGame Vortex (2000)
Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2001 is one of the best golf games out there because it provides an entertaining and realistic golfing experience. If you're looking for a quicker way to get a tee time, then definitely focus, and get around to playing this game.
WindowsSvenska PC Gamer (Feb, 2001)
PlayStationGamePro (US) (Dec 06, 2000)
As good as it is, Tiger's latest offering still doesn't have the polish and pick-up-and-playability to overtake the genuine champ of PlayStation golf-Hot Shots Golf 2. Golf fans who don't like the cartoon style of Hot Shots Golf 2, or who want to play on real courses against real players, will enjoy taking a swing with Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2001.
PlayStationGame Informer Magazine (Feb, 2001)
Although I think EA has to get some new golfers on the roster, the shot-shaping controls and varying pro stats make this title a must-play for golf fans.
WindowsGameSpot (Nov 14, 2000)
Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2001 isn't a major step for the series, but its vast number of top-notch courses will make it worthwhile for many golf sim players. The improved graphics performance and multiplayer options since the last version also make it clear that developer Headgate Studios intends to make this series as authentic as possible. Even so, PGA Tour 2001 isn't quite at the level to challenge PGA Championship Golf or Links in terms of realism, but even fans of those series would admit that PGA Tour 2001 can be a lot of fun to play.
PlayStation 2IGN (Feb 28, 2001)
Tiger Woods 2001 is a very well-made game, and the pieces are in place for an excellent sequel next year once EA has the time to model a larger complement of courses and golfers. As it is, it offers excellent gameplay and graphics, but it'll be up to you to decide whether you'll run out of steam after completing the three courses that are available. They're three very good courses, and the Tour and challenge modes offer plenty of variations that stretch out their longevity, but it's still a poor selection in comparison to many other golf games.
PlayStation 2Sports Gaming Network (Mar 19, 2001)
In the end, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2001 is a fairly enjoyable golf game that unfortunately does not fully exploit the PS2's advanced processing capabilities. Perhaps next year's version will ship on DVD format and feature additional courses and golfers, along with an improved audio-visual presentation and some of that next-generation gameplay EA Sports promised.
WindowsGameStar (Germany) (Jan, 2001)
WindowsGameSpot (Belgium/Netherlands) (Feb 21, 2001)
WindowsPC Games (Germany) (Jan, 2001)
PlayStationSports Gaming Network (2000)
Tiger Woods 2001 has some good points. The new game modes are fun to play. However, the repackaged graphics and sound just don't improve significantly over last year's version. In some respects they are worse. While the play mechanics haven't changed much, they have taken a step away from this title being a simulation.
WindowsPC Player (Germany) (Dec, 2000)
Armer Tiger Woods.
PlayStation 2Adrenaline Vault, The (AVault) (May 18, 2001)
It’s a passable experience but Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2001 feels far more like a placeholder for next year’s title than an actual game in itself. The controls, gameplay modes and AI are all well designed, but the miniscule roster of three courses combined with an equally tiny band of six golfers doesn’t give players a lot of meat to chew on. The only real saving grace is the presence of the Play Now mode, which lets you leap into a high-pressure situation without having to play through a whole round of golf. Mix in well rendered 3D characters with terribly built 2D shrubbery, mediocre sound effects, a surprisingly taciturn announcer and you have a title that happily taps it in for par rather than shooting for an eagle, or even a birdie.
WindowsAdrenaline Vault, The (AVault) (Feb 15, 2001)
Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2001 brings a lot of interesting ideas to the table, including a nicely-done, TV-style presentation, as well as having mass quantities of incredibly customizable assistance. Unfortunately, it all becomes weighed down by cumbersome execution, whose faults are largely due to the unimpressive and questionable engine. While it’s occasionally capable of conveying the grandeur and beauty associated with some of the top-shelf, big-name courses that it displays, it more often than not collapses under its own weight. Texture tearing and blurring is an all-too-common occurrence, as virtually everything from sandtraps to green corners and even the balls themselves fall victim to this visual anomaly. When you consider that the game also suffers from below-average animations and questionable physics, most purists will find little reason to give digital Tiger a chance, especially considering the excellent improvements introduced by this year’s Links offering.
PlayStation 2PSM (Dec, 2001)
PGA 2001 is the first major step forward for golf titles, but it's still lacking in a few key areas. The limited number of courses will probably hurt it more than anything else, though.
PlayStationGameZone (Jan 15, 2001)
This is a challenge and the controls are suspect, but the graphics are terrific. If you want to play a golf game, you may want to stick with a PC version, or go with another multi-player capable versions (like Cyber Tiger).
PlayStation 2GamePro (US) (Mar 08, 2001)
Leaning on the selling power of its namesake, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2001 limps its way through a mediocre round of golf that's less fun than its proud PGA predecessors, and doesn't even dent the PS2's graphical capabilities. Worst of all, you must hit the ball with analog controls. Gone is the tension and timing of hitting the X button. The fairways look good, but the tree and grass textures are simply ugly, especially from mid to long distances, and Tiger's nasally voice-overs don?t help the experience.
PlayStationVideo Games (Jan, 2001)
PlayStation 2Game Informer Magazine (Apr, 2001)
All of the elements of a cool game are here. The sounds are very authentic (although there is a lot more cursing when I play), the graphics are worthy of the PS2, and the controls…Well, the controls are something else. I can see setting up a shot for a draw or a fade, but being able to do it while the ball is in the air is a little like shooting fish in a barrel. Not only that, but there’s no way to change the swing mechanism. You have to use the analog control. That in itself is enough for me to frown. This coupled with the fact that if you don’t make a perfectly vertical movement with the stick while swinging, you’re either taking a mulligan or you’re so far in the rough you need a machete to get to your ball. On the plus side, there is some nice voice work done, and the different challenge scenarios will keep things interesting for you should you tire of the Tour mode. Unless you’re a Tiger fanatic, I’d give this one a rent then leave it alone.
PlayStationIGN (Dec 05, 2000)
The game's a solid golf game that should please the fans of console golf sims, but not those that are into deeper sims on the PC or more arcade-oriented efforts like Hot Shots Golf.
65 (Dec 18, 2000)
WindowsComputer Gaming World (CGW) (Mar, 2001)
TIGER WOODS PGA TOUR 2001 is basically last year’s game with a few improvements. Unfortunately, with games like LINKS 2001 and PGA CHAMPIONSHIP 2000 on the shelves, dated graphics and questionable ball physics make it difficult to recommend this incarnation. Hopefully, Headgate Studios will use the coming year to work its magic on the franchise.
PlayStation 2Game Informer Magazine (Apr, 2001)
Overall, this game falls way short of my expectations and makes Swing Away look even more appealing.
PlayStation 2Digital Press - Classic Video Games (Apr 22, 2007)
There is very little reason to revisit this game. It still plays a decent version of golf, but when 2002 (not to mention later games as well) did everything so much better, it's hard to go back. This may appeal a bit more to those who enjoy more realistic golf, but the wealth of features offered by other games in the series adds a lot more replay value for the money.
PlayStation 2GameSpot (Mar 06, 2001)
The most frustrating aspect of this game is not its general mediocrity, but that it is so close to being a genuinely good golf game. It has all the makings, and with some minor tweaking of the controls and a bit of graphical cleanup, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2001 could have been an exceptional title. The competition is lean on the PS2, with the only other option being the superior, albeit cartoony, Swing Away Golf, also published by Electronic Arts. But if golf isn't golf for you without those PGA masters and true-to-life courses, then Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2001 may meet your needs.
PlayStationGameSpot (Dec 01, 2000)
Unless the new uniform look that EA Sports has adopted for all its sports games and the addition of Tiger Control really get your motor running, there is little to attract players to the game. Those simply looking for a good PlayStation golf game are better off looking at the Hot Shots series than picking up this antiquated, middle-of-the-road golf game.
PlayStation 2Gamekult (Apr 25, 2001)
