Development
The game took 14 months to complete. The design and writing process, conducted solely by Roberta Williams, was six months.
Manual
The original Apple II documentation contains a disclaimer stating that there might be mistakes in the game. According to an interview with Roberta Williams with Computer Gaming World (May/June 1982), the reason is that Williams accidentally placed a rhea bird in Australia instead of South America where it belongs to. She was visiting the L.A. zoo where the rheas where placed within the Australian area and so she adopted it into the game. When they discovered the mistake it was too late to correct.
She was correct about there being other mistakes as well. Peter the Great died in 1725, Catherine the Great was born in 1729 - therefore the game is incorrect to state them to have been married to each other...
