The most noticeable improvement in this sequel is a vastly better story mode. But story mode isn't really the point: death-match mode is where the action is. New guns, new characters, better animation, and network play make this the best arcade-style first-person-shooter game available on consoles. Environments are enormous, and enemies are plentiful. Adding to the fun, you can use the enhanced MapMaker to create new levels. One minor gripe: Player statistics are no longer tracked and presented.

This game is great. It is the game all you FPS fans have been waiting for, it is a whole new level in FPS gaming and I think everyone should get it. It is better than both Goldeneye and Perfect Dark, and even better than Halo. With the astounding amount of things to unlock, the amazing multiplayer, and the Map Maker this game will keep you coming back. There is almost nothing bad to say about this game except for the fact that there really isn’t anything new and amazing in TS2, but if the formula works, why change it? Also, the story is pretty lame, but who cares when it is still fun.

Finally, an FPS game that has a fun and effective two-player cooperative mode in the story, and a multiplayer mode that is the tops of anything on the market for console games, TS2 is the pinnacle for which FPS’s of the future will try to attain. Enough reading. If you don’t have TS2, get it. If you already own it, shouldn’t you be trying to get that next character unlocked?

Free Radical took fans? comments about TimeSplitters to heart, and it?s developed a sequel to the PS2?s first first-person shooter that outdoes the original in every respect?and outdoes most other PS2 shooters in the process.

On the whole the game is a must have for any console owner. The story mode will pull you in (especially co-operative story mode) and the multiplayer mode will keep you coming back for more again and again.

Without question, this is the best FPS available on the PS2 and something everyone should have in their collection. Between the Story, Multiplayer, Arcade modes and all of the unlockables, this game will keep gamers busy for at least a year or ten. There's enough in this game to like that even non-FPS fans will be able to find something they like.

Praise for this title is just so easy to give; the game is basically synonymous with the word brilliant. With a multiplayer mode that's seemingly immaculate (easily rivals Goldeneye and Halo's), a single player mode that's well above average, and a control set-up that anyone can operate effortlessly, the game practically encounters no downward spirals. The few flaws the game does have are so minuscule that they're basically not even detrimental to the overall product. One of the finest, solidly-crafted games in years -- there's no question.

It’s a shame this game came out when it did. If Free Radical had managed to hold out another month or two they could have taken advantage of the recently added online components of all the next-gen systems. I can’t imagine playing TimeSplitters 2 online; well yes I can, and it sends shivers down my spine. We can only hope for online support in TimeSplitters 3 or whatever Free Radical has up their sleeve for their next big release.

If I haven’t convinced you by now, Time Splitters 2 may very well be the greatest FPS to hit GameCube. Ever. Barring a third installment to the franchise, I don’t expect the crown to be removed any time in the near future. Unless you have an aversion to really great games or first-person shooters, you should do yourself a favor and pick this one up ASAP.

66 Says: It's funny when you think about it. Sure Time Splitters 2 has received some great media coverage, but the upcoming Metroid Prime has stolen the show. Just like the thousands of others in the country who have gotten their hands on Metroid play-testing, I personally have to admit that from what I've seen so far TS2 is probably the best FPS of the year. Even the bloated Unreal Tournament 2003 (which I loved) couldn't fully compare to TS2.

The original game had several strengths including the novel map creator and refreshing character design and thankfully these both return in force in the sequel. Whereas the original could only create multiplayer maps now you can set up Story levels and even have the option to set up guards patrol routes. The AI is similarly improved, whereas before all enemies took a gung-ho approach this time they will be more varied. Some will attack without hesitation while others will use cover or stealth to gun you down. In a genre of bland and uninspiring characters, Timesplitters refreshingly introduced cheerleaders, doctors, aliens and Elvis into a stagnant world of mutants, cyborgs and military personnel. This time expect to control cowboys, sheriffs, monkeys, rock men and robots with the Japanese schoolgirl attracting the most attention. Timesplitters 2 will have that and more. This is definitely a must buy for shooter fans. I play it just to see a monkeys with a high powered Assault Rifle’s.

Free Radical Design and Eidos have a bonafide hit on their hands. The future looks extremely bright for this talented group of game designers. The insight and design shown in TS2 is without an equal. As an added plus, this game is both an audio and visual experience that shouldn’t be missed.

I was one of the lucky owners of a PS2 on the launch date of the system, and would have sold the darned thing due to a disappointing game lineup had it not been for the original Timesplitters title from Free Radical and Eidos. This game showed owners of the PS2 what the system could be capable of, and did a great job on lighting, gameplay, and overall enjoyment. Us gamers talked about what improvements could have been made … they listened … and the result is one of, if not the best FPS title that I have played so far for any console system.

In the beginning, there was Goldeneye and Perfect Dark on the Nintendo 64, which single-handedly proved that first person shooters could be enjoyable on a console system. Next came TimeSplitters, which was a rushed product, but it still managed to become one of the best PlayStation 2 multiplayer games ever created. Fast forward to 2002 where Free Radical Design (formed by several key members from Rare's Goldeneye and Perfect Dark teams) has kept the tradition alive with the release of TimeSplitters 2.
92
GameCubeGaming Target
Overall, TimeSplitters 2 is all that and a bag of chips. The multiplayer modes are fast, frantic and sorely addictive. Free Radical has created a worthy successor to GoldenEye that is varied and ultimately, fun. However, what it comes down to is that the game doesn’t make enough leaps in bounds in single-player to really put it in stardom. Nevertheless, you owe it to yourself (as well as your mom) to pick this game up. There’s a reason why I’ve been playing this more than Metroid Prime. Wholeheartedly recommended.

GameCubeIGN
Point. Aim. Shoot. The concept behind 3D first-person shooters seems simple enough, but it's the execution (pardon the pun), that makes all the difference. UK-based development giant Rare got it right when it released GoldenEye 007 for Nintendo 64 in late 1997, a shooter that borrowed and polished elements from FPSs on PCs and added enough new ideas to the mix to make the experience a worthwhile one. Since that time, Rare's Bond shooter has remained something of a console FPS benchmark -- still one of the best available, and constantly challenged by newcomers to the market.
91
XboxIGN
The game's single-player mode is marked by what I think is a weak attempt to bring a story to a series of unconnected levels. It also lacks innovation. There is nothing present in any of the levels that hasn't been done before in other first-person shooters. Indeed, some of the single-player stages in the game even come off as a tad shallow at points. But regardless of all these minor complaints, everything is forgiven, for what TimeSplitters 2 does correctly -- and there is a lot -- it does so with a level of polish and perfection that few competitors can match. From the unparalleled sense of speed and unmatched control accuracy and comfort to the amazing cooperative mode, unbelievably deep and brilliant multiplayer modes, sheer options, and MapMaker feature, there is some much to love about this game that it's hard to list it all.

PlayStation 2Gaming Target
Throughout all of gaming history, there’s been those certain titles that change the way we think about games and gaming in general. The ones that rip through every standard boundary we ever came to know, and make us reconsider what exactly is “great.” From next-gen gaming, there’s titles such as Goldeneye 007 the game that revolutionized console first-person shooters in practically every way possible. On PC there’s the legendary Half-Life, a game that was light-years ahead of its time when it comes to integrating story with gameplay–never before had gamers experienced such a blatantly amazing product.

Although it's impossible to live up to the mythology created around a certain Nintendo 64 first-person shooter based on the James Bond license, Free Radical has the unenviable job of having to do just that. Split like rogue atoms from the cluster center of Rare in 1999, Free Radical burst onto the gaming scene in 2000 with a built-in heritage in console first-person shooters and a company name, though strangely different, to live up to.

The bottom line, though, is whether you'll want to buy it. With so many top quality games coming out over the coming weeks, TimeSplitters 2 is certainly one of the best five new console releases out before Christmas - whether you commit yourself to this over the other great games coming out will depend on your love of first person shooters. The two single player modes combined will keep you going for ages (not to mention single player vs. bot possibilities), while the multiplayer charms (tons of maps, modes, level designer, link modes) put it easily on a par with anything else out there. And it's got monkeys in it, which instantly makes it an essential purchase.

PlayStation 2Adrenaline Vault, The (AVault)
Unique in presentation, fluid in controls and exceptional in multiplayer, Timesplitters 2 is a superior sequel in almost every way. Playing against others was fun before, but the single-player modes were atrocious. That problem solved with some cheeky storytelling and some very well designed levels, the sequel is a complete game rather than just a multiplayer vehicle. Owners of a Multitap will get the most mileage from this release, but co-op play and solid solo challenges against bots will add even more value. Well worth the investment, Timesplitters 2 has lived up to the series’ potential.

Dit spel is zeker en vast een must have voor iedereen die van een goede shooter houdt. Een sterke story mode en verslavende challenges houden je gedurende een lange periode meer dan zoet. Immersion isn't the focus here: it's the fast-paced, smooth gameplay that will keep you hooked and coming back for more. Frantic, but never completely overwhelming, you'll need to move fast and shoot even faster to stay alive - the twitch factor is high, don't expect to use too much strategy, just go in, guns a-blazin'. Free Radical really got the point of making TimeSplitters 2 first and foremost a console game in every aspect of it's design, keeping the adrenaline pumping at every turn - if anyone whines about not having a mouse and keyboard here, throw your Wavebird at them.

Hell, even without the yearned for online feature (please include it for TimeSplitters 3! Oh please oh please oh please…), TimeSplitters 2 is still a phenomenal title that you will want. With an improved story mode, loads of additional features and easy to learn controls, TimeSplitters 2 moves you past the trouble of having to learn complex rules and gets you right to the heart of the matter: fragging your enemies. Oh what an amazing title for all FPS fans out there, it's almost balanced in terms of graphics/animation, sound, story, gameplay etc, but with familiar elements from other titles and extra little features that give the game it's originality. If you enjoyed Rare's Goldeneye and Perfect Dark, love a change in gameplay and storyline, and have $45 to spend, then this is an ideal purchase!

In an age when the likes of BioShock, Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4 rule the FPS genre there may not be much room for droll titles like TimeSplitters 2, but it still manages to feel unique and pertinent; an uplifting change to most of the market. The single-player is still not perfect and the lack of any online modes feels somewhat antiquated, but for a fast-paced, light-hearted and surprisingly cavernous First-Person Shooter, they don’t come any better than this.

If that's your excuse though, you're only hurting yourself. This is a perfect example of how a game can fall into a crowded genre and stand out based on gameplay alone. So many play styles can only translate into one thing -- boundless replay value. The most flattering endorsement I can give the game is that you'll be playing it long after the holidays, and perhaps even next year's festive occasions have come and gone. While beating single-player scenarios isn't such a chore, anyone who can take advantage of the multiplayer functions needn't fear a thing in the world. Finally, we have the game that Perfect Dark wasn't. TimeSplitters 2 is less a sleeper hit than a lesson to the industry at large: Gameplay is king, and right now, Eidos and Free Radical are sitting on a gilded throne, laughing their unoriginal asses off.

Most improved sequel probably. Game of the year ’eh, maybe. Shooter of the year ’hmm, could be. If you’ve been reading the site for the past two months, you might remember that I wrote up the preview of TimeSplitters 2, commenting on its improved features, newly focused gameplay, and other facets that improved upon the original game. Well, after spending a month playing through all three systems, absorbing every nuance and feature, I can truly say that Eidos has a surefire multi-platform hit on its hands, one that no gamer, I repeat, NO gamer should be without.

On top of getting sucked into the fast and furious gameplay, everybody know that most of your time will be spent messing around with the map maker program. Everything plays out though with the addition of the map maker which will keep you designing your own world for months to come.

The original TimeSplitters was released for the PlayStation 2 in late 2000 (shortly after the system's launch) and was developed by Free Radical Design, a group of ex-Rare employees who had worked on the legendary GoldenEye 007 for the Nintendo 64. While TimeSplitters featured deathmatch action that pulled down the pants of GoldenEye's multiplayer mode and taunted it, the game's single-player mode was a slapdash affair, totally devoid of storyline and strategy.

TimeSplitters 2 is all about options. While it isn't a huge, story-driven first-person shooter, it doesn't attempt to meet that goal. Instead it provides a top-notch collection of great modes, great maps, and solid weaponry. While it's in some ways disappointing that such an option-packed and fun multiplayer game doesn't have any online multiplayer capabilities, TimeSplitters 2 represents the ultimate evolution of the split-screen first-person shooter. At any rate, if you're someone who can't deal with split-screen multiplayer, then TimeSplitters 2 will probably feel like one gigantic missed opportunity to you. But anyone looking for a solid, console-style first-person shooter with enough options to keep you playing for a long, long time will find that TimeSplitters 2 definitely does the job with style.

TimeSplitters 2 may very well be the best split-screen multiplayer-focused first-person shooter ever created. Back when console technology wasn't quite powerful enough to allow you to play first-person shooters as they were meant to be played, such games used to get a very bad rap on those platforms. Older systems simply didn't have the muscle to make shooters look like they were supposed to, and the lack of online support for consoles meant that players were stuck playing multiplayer matches on a split screen.

Well, I wish this game wouldn’t end, and I know the next chapter won’t be out for a couple of years (if there is another), but this really is one of the best games I’ve ever played. Forget Halo, this game is an infinite more amount of fun. Halo might have its vehicles, and Red Faction might have its Geo Mod, but this is an even more original experience. TS2 is not going to hold the powerful memory of games like Zelda, Metroid or Half-Life because it never takes itself too seriously. I think it is best described as a brilliant advertisement for what these folks are capable of handling in the future. I feel that we’re going to see much more from this team and that hopefully someone will write them an amazing story that takes advantage of all the brilliant but scattered elements they were able to bring to this production. But by no means would I encourage you to hold back and wait for the next effort. In fact, the only criticism I will hold against Free Radical now, something that was a serious game-foul on their part, was the lack of a jump. Feel blessed, Free Radical. I enjoyed this game a lot but have high expectations for your next project.

TimeSplitters 2 really shines in its multiplayer mode. Up to four players can compete on a single console, more if you linkup multiple systems. Sadly there is no Xbox Live support. On the upside, you can use a third-party application, such as the GameSpy Tunnel to play TimeSplitters 2 online.

This is one of the best console FPS titles available, it stands up to our friend Halo, but on its own terms, taking the best of Goldeneye's stealthy single player action and Quake 3's fast and furious style multiplayer gaming. And thanks to the arcade and challenge modes there is a huge replay value that will keep you returning to this title time and again.

TS2's music is exceptional and appropriate for each stage, including a jazzy score for 1932 Chicago, religious hymns in Notre Dame, and electronic music for Planet X. It took a while for me to fully appreciate this one, but Time Splitters 2 is a well-constructed shooter that's both goofy and fun. Some may find it shallow, but never underestimate the all-important monkey factor.

Finally, Timesplitters 2 brings back the cool map editing mode from the first game. While there have been a few improvements made to the map editor (such as the ability to create 'story' maps complete with objectives, enemies, and event triggers), the weaknesses that hampered the original map mode have been carried over.
