There are a lot of changes in Ghost Recon 2 the biggest of which is the change in perspective. The previous game was played from a tight first-person view, with only a reticle and minimal information, such as health and ammunition, on the screen. It was often too close, offering very little in the way of peripheral vision, and it was tough to know if you were fully protected by any cover you were hiding behind. Thankfully, the developers decided to make this the focus of the gameplay changes, and you can now see your soldier's body, with the camera positioned just behind his shoulder.

Ghost Recon began as a PC franchise and was brought over to Xbox two years back. Though a number of people loved the original on Xbox, I found it to be ugly, cumbersome, frustrating, and, frankly, not much fun. Ghost Recon 2 -- a game not only made for consoles, but made specifically for Xbox -- fixes many of the problems I had with the original, making for one of the best shooters on Xbox.

Soldats, Rompez !

I have never really been a huge Ghost Recon fan, but I rented the original Ghost Recon on Xbox and found it to be a decent game, but with a lot of flaws. Ghost Recon 2 fixes everything that the first one had problems with. Graphics are improved, and gameplay is far superior to that of its predecessors. The campaign mode is fairly entertaining and chances are you will play it a second time. The multiplayer mode whether online, or offline is still a solid piece of work. Definitely worth playing on Xbox Live. However, as I mentioned early on in this review, is Ghost Recon 2 really better then the GR 1 and Island Thunder before it? The answer is a solid “Yes”.

All but three of the single-player missions (there are three missions in the campaign where you're not accompanied by your squad) can be played cooperatively with up to four people split-screen, through system link, or over Xbox Live. The cooperative mode, especially over Live, is a blast and it's worth the price of admission by itself. You can also set up several variations on the single-player missions in which you must infiltrate points on the map armed only with a silenced pistol, kill every enemy, or defend a position for 10 minutes.

If you're someone that likes a good challenge with a good first person shooter story line, then this is the game for you. You will definitely enjoy the storyline, graphics, and everything Ghost Recon 2 has to offer. If you're someone that hasn't preferred first person shooter games or doesn't like anything of a very hard difficulty, then you should at least try it. You can rent it (which I recommend) at your local store for a cheap price, play it for a bit, and then decide if you want to purchase it or not.

This is a game that could, and should, convert people to 'realistic' shoot-em ups, but it doesn't have enough on the surface to have that kind of appeal. Dig a little deeper and you'll find a game that is worth putting some time into and will almost certainly be enjoyable from beginning to end. It's the first hurdle that's the problem, so if you haven't poked the first tentative toe into this genre, now is the time to start. For those of you who enjoy a challenge and a bit more depth in your action games, Ghost Recon 2 is the game to play.

I’m officially getting a little tired of the Tom Clancy squad-based shooters. Now, don’t get me wrong – I think they’re good games and deserving of the devoted following that they have, but they’re all starting to blend together. Take Ghost Recon 2, for example. On paper, it seems to have a lot of novel features, like a new third-person perspective, improved squad controls, and a graphical overhaul. While it indeed has all those things, it feels more like a merger of the Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six franchises than a new game.

XboxEurogamer.net (UK)
If the game shipped without online, we'd have to bemoan some of the issues slightly louder than we have; rushing AI nonsense, invisibly camouflaged enemies and lack of longevity would push an otherwise very accomplished game down to the realms of a seven - and if you're not planning to go online with Ghost Recon 2 then consider that a fair reflection of what the Campaign is worth. Not bad, but certainly not great, and not quite up to the standard that Rainbow Six offers. Online, though it's not perfect; we've had our fill of overpowered deathmatch-style gaming to tolerate it this time, but fine, if you like that you'll get on just fine here.

Actionreiche Terrorhatz im Team - leider ohne Multiplayer-Modus. [...]

Still, if you can overlook those issues, Ghost Recon 2 is a feature-packed game, with a great campaign and loads of side modes to keep you busy. The multiplayer modes work extremely well online, and we'd be shocked if the online community didn't become one of the biggest on Xbox Live outside of Halo 2. So though it's far from perfect, it is a good overall game.

Thanks to the "Lone Wolf" addition the points for concept raise a lot. The graphics aren't up to par and the gameplay is decent at most (which is not good enough for such a title). The sounds are very good but then I'm not talking about the weapons. If you've got Live and you like this type of games, then I would suggest buying it. Be warned though, the game contains a lot of downpoints and in my opinion there aren't enough pro's to make up for the con's.

PlayStation 2Computer and Video Games (CVG)
It is easy to find quibbles with Ghost Recon 2 for the PlayStation 2 - its quest to achieve minimalism as been taken way too far - but it isn't a bad game. Military obsessives will love it and, providing those who play it are prepared to put in the time required to learn its quirks and foibles, they should be rewarded with a fairly satisfying experience.

PlayStation 2Game Chronicles
I’ve said some negative things stuff about Ghost Recon 2 in this review. And it’s a shame, because the game probably suffers more from the limitations of the equipment than it does due to poor programming. Other than the poor AI and the dead-shot enemies constantly dropping you without warning; the story is believable, the overall gameplay mechanic is solid, and the graphics and sound are both top-notch. But when the combat gets heavy, the PS2 just can’t keep up, the framerate crawls and the game becomes uncontrollable. So bad so, that not even a lame online mode can make up for it. It’s obvious that the graphics-heavy Clancy games are tailored toward the beefier Xbox console, and the PS2 versions ported strictly for sales dollars. On the Xbox, Ghost Recon 2 rocks – on the PS2 however, it just doesn’t measure up.

XboxGamePro
Ghost Recon 2 could have been an outstanding sequel to what is perhaps one of the best military shooter series ever made. Instead, this follow-up tiptoes along a thin line that separates old irritating habits and totally new features that don't necessarily make the gameplay better.

PlayStation 2Playstation Illustrated
The overall experience I had playing Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon 2 comes with mixed reactions. While I enjoyed the initial challenge of the game, I soon realized that the game is more or less based on the “try and try again” mentality. Each pass through the missions seems to get easier and easier because the computer’s A.I. just isn’t there. All of the actions are scripted, making the game turn from challenging to very easy in no time at all. If you’re a fan of Tom Clancy games, you may want to pick up Ghost Recon 2. But I would recommend a rental for most gamers so that you can check out both offline and online gameplay to see if either is something you want purchase the game for.

XboxGame Revolution
In militaristic video games, the propaganda of an infallible America is usually kept to a brow-beating minimum, but this is not the case in Ubisoft’s tactical action shooter, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon 2. With a Teen rating set against a heavily violent backdrop, Ghost Recon 2 is a web of duality and confusion, a mixed bag of cutting-edge features and annoying flaws. Thankfully, some great graphics and a strong online component save it from the ravages of war.

PlayStation 2Game Informer Magazine
I applaud Ubisoft for trying something new by making the Xbox and PS2 versions of Ghost Recon 2 entirely different games. However, like most titles in the Tom Clancy shooter library, they simply don’t feel that different. Basically, if the Xbox version Ghost Recon 2 had a minor stroke and lost some of its motor skills, but could still function, you’d get this game.

PlayStation 2GameZone
A flawed experience from start to finish, Ghost Recon 2 on the PS2 has its share of really good action-packed moments, but its glitches are just too hard to ignore. The new third-person perspective is a nice change indeed and the online multiplayer mode is handled excellently, but this is still not the sequel we were hoping would make us forget the poor PS2 version of the original Ghost Recon.

PlayStation 2Futuregamez.net
So what happened? Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon 2 really only links to the PC games in name only. This game is a major letdown. Unless you're planning to play this game online you're much better off getting your action fix elsewhere. The biggest crime is that this game has gone even further from the superb squad based management then the first title - and that was one of the biggest complaints about that game! Why is it that a company such as Ubisoft feels they have to "dumb" down the game for console gamers. A poor action title that's hard to recommend to anyone besides die hard action fans.
60
PlayStation 2IGN
Even if the emphasis on cautionary camping suits you, Ghost Recon 2 is still riddled with online issues. Over the headset, voices often fallout. Over the wire, the game can get so laggy that just shooting straight becomes an impossibility. Should you opt to play something interesting like a 16-player Supremacy match, you'll happily find yourself dealing with the same poor framerate and lag. You'll also have to deal with the perspective locked in the third-person, too. These kinds of presentational issues really work against a title that has the feel done pretty well.
60
PlayStation 2GameSpy
It's really a shame that Ghost Recon 2 for the PS2 didn't turn out better, as it would have been a nice companion to the excellent Xbox version. As it is, the game feels a bit rushed, as if it could have used a few months more in developments, particularly when it comes to balancing some of the combat. Ubisoft was ambitious in developing the two versions of the game separately, but it may have been better off simply creating one game for both systems.
60
PlayStation 2Worth Playing
Ghost Recon 2 is less a step up than it is a reimagining of the entire series, ignoring everything that made up the first game. Instead of making improvements, the development team made a game to appeal to a different crowd than their original audience, and I honestly don’t think the decision was a good one. No offline multiplayer, only incremental graphical improvements, and the cumbersome third-person view make Ghost Recon 2 a release that is much less than what it was expected to be – no, what it should have been.

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon 2 for GameCube should be a non-stop fun, addictive military-themed shooter. It seems to have all the right ingredients. There is a fairly predictable, but nonetheless intriguing storyline. There are some smartly implemented solo and squad-based gameplay mechanics complemented by relatively tight control. You can shoot things. You can explode things. What's not to like? The unfortunate answer is the overall execution of the port. It's a wee bit sloppy, which doesn't entirely ruin the experience, but certainly puts a dent in it. The result is a game that's enjoyable at times and nearly unplayable others, largely because of a sometimes poor framerate, or stupidly implemented artificial intelligence squad members. Although Ubisoft gets points for including cool Solo and Firefight modes for gamers who don't want to worry about strategy or planning, it loses those points for omitting any multiplayer experience from the GameCube port.

PlayStation 2Daily Game
While the squad command system for GR 2 has been tuned to make it more accessible, the elementary AI of your teammates makes you wish they were all dead. Team members will sometimes ignore orders or get stuck behind objects. Online gameplay, which is the cornerstone of almost all the Tom Clancy games on both consoles, is decidedly un-fun. It's laggy, and lacks enough game types to keep anyone interested for long. Unlike the other Tom Clancy titles for PlayStation 2, which were absolute gems, Ghost Recon 2 is an almost abysmal effort. It's hard to believe Ubisoft published this game, let alone green-lighted it for final production in the shape it's in. If you really need tactical team action, go grab SOCOM II, or play the Xbox version of GR 2.

PlayStation 2Fragland.net
It's a small conclusion this time. Unless you're really sick of SOCOM and want a descent online shooter, this game's nothing for you. If you're not planning on playing online, don't even bother. I even forgot to mention some flaws, but I'll just stop here. You get my point.

Ghost Recon 2 completely fails to live up to its predecessor in every way possible. I was hugely let down by this game, as I expected much more from the people that brought us the Sam Fisher series. I feel like this game relied too much on the Tom Clancy legacy and did not even bother to actually deliver a game worthy of such a quality-evoking name.

PlayStation 2Gamers' Temple, The
In this case multiplayer means only online as there is no split-screen or cooperative which is really a shame. There are problems with the online play like lag, a LOT of voice dropping over the headsets, a very long account setup (sure you only do it once, but jeez...), and graphics. What I mean about the graphics is that they are not nearly as clean and detailed as the single player mode, which weren't that great in the first place! Starting a game takes way too much time and there are just plain and simply better squad based online shooters for the PS2 that you would have more fun with.

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon 2 fails to live up to the lofty expectations of its own brand thanks to simplistic gameplay, lackluster presentation, a lack of co-op play, and an overall dearth of polish. Players who simply can't get enough of modern-style shooters may find some redeeming value in the game, but for the rest of us, there are much better alternatives out there.

I'm really surprised how poorly Ghost Recon 2 for the PlayStation 2 turned out. Uninspiring level design, terrible squad AI and minimal multiplayer support all contribute to a frustrating and ultimately dull gaming experience. I simply can't recommend this title to military shooter enthusiasts, let alone newcomers to the series.

Ghost Recon 2 is, more or less, how not to release a game. First of all, both the PlayStation2 and Xbox games should have been equal, but the PlayStation2 version is far inferior. To make matters worse, not only is this GameCube game a port of the PS2 version, it's lacking the multiplayer qualities that may have made the PS2 version slightly bearable. It's too bad that the GameCube's release list has grown quite small in recent months, but please put your cash towards something more worthwhile than this tossed-together title – Ghost Recon 2 for Xbox, for example, is a much, much better investment.

Yeah, as far as new gadgets go, there's a camera gun in Ghost Recon 2 that allows you to fire around corners. Big whoop! So many things in this game are either unpolished or retarded that it’s hard to care about the subject matter. The PC version of the sequel comes out later this year and, despite my love for the original Ghost Recon (I play it almost daily), it must be said that this reviewer isn’t getting his hopes up. It's games like Ghost Recon 2 that make you wish for a personal year-long hibernation, after which all the crappy videogames in the world will have been magically fixed. Never fear, SOCOM II, your crown is still quite safe as the premiere PS2 military-themed shooter.
