I know I’ll be playing this game for months to come, both online and off. Neversoft has done what I would have thought impossible a month ago. They actually created a game that sold me on the sport of skateboarding, at least in video game format. I won’t be programming my DVR for the next X-Games anytime soon, but I will be looking forward to the next Tony Hawk game while I continue to explore Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland.

There’s still room for improvement – THAW isn’t quite as wide open as we’d hoped – and it will be interesting to see where Neversoft takes the series on the next-generation consoles. For now, though, THAW is plenty hot.

Again, THAW for Xbox 360 is a phenomenal game…if you haven't picked it up already. Not to beat the flesh off a dead horse, but if you have the Xbox version already, it's not really worth your time or money. It's the same game with better graphics and a better controller. If you totally mark out for visuals and you want to earn some more Accomplishment points, then it might be worth your while. It's still a great title, but unless you don't already have it, it's not an essential purchase.

So, is THAW the best Tony Hawk ever? No, but it's definitely better than the last two. It's a throwback to the old-school Hawk series, yet it's a compromise at the same time. It tries really hard to please both jaded vets and exuberant fanboys, and for the most part, it succeeds, even if the story mode's a little short and on the easy side.

Tony Hawk's American Wasteland is a very solid game overall. The tweaks to the core gameplay, the addition of the BMX moves, and the inclusion of a massive city to skate around in are definitely appreciated. Neversoft is constantly improving the game, though it is questionable how they’re going to improve on it next time around. They have been receiving the same question for several years now and they always meet the expectations though.

Although most of the time I don’t like sports games, THAW is a triumph that even non-sports fans will enjoy. With all the content, THAW literally has something for everyone, and thus overcomes its flaws with brilliance. Hawk fan or not, sports fan or not, you can’t go wrong playing in the American Wasteland.

If it's got anything working against it, the lack of create-a-character in story mode takes away a personal touch. Still, there's a sense that even though this is a phenomenal game that ranks in the annals of some of the best of the series, maybe gamers could use a year off so that they can appreciate the quality of the series a little more. This cash cow's made Activision a lot of cheddar, but how much longer can they milk her?

Graphically very good, with a killer musical score, high-flying aerial tricks, and a free-roaming environment, THAW is a great title that picks up where THUG2 left off and advances the franchise with a bit more diverse gaming and all the entertainment elements expected from the series.

On the audio side I don't pay much attention to the sound effects, but the entire story mode is filled with voice-overs. No one I recognize, but that's ok. The soundtrack is vintage THPS, with a mix of Hip-Hop, Rock, and Punk. And sifting through some of the indie tracks you'll find cuts in there from Green Day, Public Enemy, Bad Religon, Oingo Boingo (back before Danny Elfman got movie contracts), Motley Crue, and even The Doors. But to be honest, I use the custom soundtrack option on my Xbox version. I love custom soundtracks, and it's nice to see it once again.

Danke Neversoft, danke!

All in all, Tony Hawk's American Wasteland is a great addition to the franchise and makes me eagerly anticipate the next installment. If the developers spend a little more time testing the next game to eliminate the bugs and give me complete control of my character's appearance in story mode, then the next offering will be a formidable title indeed. I highly recommend THAW to anyone who likes the previous games or skateboarding in general.

Trendsportmuffel sollten erstmal Probespielen.

I don't know what the future holds for he Tony Hawk series. And I am guessing it's going to be a little while yet before we get a chance to see the Xbox 360 version in action. It wasn't shown at E3 either. But in the meantime, this is yet another enjoyable game in the THPS series. And just like clockwork I have gone from "Great, another Tony Hawk game" to "This is another great Tony Hawk Game!" I can see the series getting a little tired, and it doesn't quite have that magical "aura" that the first couple did. But nonetheless there's plenty to keep you busy. Learning new tricks alone will be enough for you. But going online is also just as fun, and now you can do it on the Xbox. Another solid game from the skateboarding masters.

The Tony Hawk series is the best skateboarding franchise around, and the developers prove that time and time again with each new release and Tony Hawk's American Wasteland is no exception. If you are a fan of the series this game is a no brainier for you to pick up as soon as you can.

The biggest and best addition is the lack of load times. The creation of a seamless skating experience is a welcome one, but that just isn’t enough to warrant slapping a new picture on what is essentially last year’s game. The result is a title that feels less like a sequel and more like an expansion pack and that doesn’t warrant the $50 price tag. If Activision isn’t careful they’re going to milk their cash cow dry.

With a review this mixed, you have to ask, is it worth it? Well, I am enjoying the game, but I know that the 360 version will fix a lot of the graphic issues present here. While it won't fix the story length, it would leave me with a choice. Do I enjoy the game now, or do I wait until next month and pick up the 360 version? If you are holding out on the next generation, you'll need to figure out if Live play and classic mode will be enough for you, because the 5-6 hour storyline won't tide you over for long. In the end I think this is a return to the roots for the Tony Hawk games' a return that is hampered by little bugs and the end of the console life cycle.

Tony Hawk's American Wasteland is a nice return to the series' purer skateboarding strengths. It's still essentially more of the same, but it's also dropped some of the zanier aspects that had taken the title away from its roots. I'd say it's the best Tony Hawk game since THPS4, and I'd recommend it to anyone who's either a fan of the series, past or present, or who hasn't tried out a Tony Hawk title in some time as it's great fun.

Multiplayer is definitely a nice addition for the Xbox. If you are a veteran to the series, this game may be a little too easy for you, although if you are a fan like me, you’ll still welcome it with open arms. If you are new to the series, it’s time to move out of the cave that you are living in and join the real world. As the game seems catered to non-veteran players, you will have no problem playing this game.

With what is essentially the third "reinvention" of the series, Pro Skater being the first and Underground being second, Tony Hawk's American Wasteland sees the series shy away from the unfettered destruction focus of the last two games and head back to its pure skateboarding roots. In fact, the game's story mode is based around old-school skaters, building a skatepark from the ground up and basically earning everything from scratch.

The Tony Hawk series has had the reputation for creating top-of-the-line skating entertainment that pushes the extreme sport genre for video games to the max. The latest Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland tries to continue that tradition onto the Xbox 360 console. While the game offers an amazing story mode, it just doesn’t have that spunk and originality in its gameplay that it used to have. In all fairness, this is still your best pick when it comes to this sport, but the overall experience is more like “been there, done that”.

Tony Hawk, the international man of trickery, is back for his seventh (or eighth – I'm starting to lose track) journey to stunt perfection. It seemed wise to go underground with such a dangerous sport, but this time Tony Hawk is taking his game to a place that no extreme sports game has gone before: a large, streaming world with the promise of there being no loading and no end to the areas you can explore. Sounds too good to be true, and it probably would've been had not been for the fact that this is the zillionth sequel to Tony Hawk's Pro Skater. This series doesn't make a habit of disappointing its players.

THAW is sure to please almost everyone who said "WTF?" when playing THUG 2. The story mode is fun, funny and yet not absurd enough to wonder what drugs were abused during development time. As mentioned this installment will gently ease any players back into the Tony Hawk series and while there is perhaps a little too much handholding at times, vets can always ramp up the difficulty as they see fit. While the Xbox 360 is the best looking of the bunch, it doesn't come close to showing off the power of the system since it's a visually upgraded port from the current gen systems. If you're playing THAW on the Xbox, GC or the PS2 you aren't missing out by not having the "hot system" of 2005. As I see it, Neversoft has brought the series back from the brink of no return in this sound and solid piece of game coding. I look forward to the next one and that's something I haven't said for quite awhile.

Overall, Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland is yet another solid addition to a top-selling franchise. A new story mode, a co-op classic mode, Xbox Live and a slew of other modes give this game high replay value. The difficulty isn’t too bad, although several challenges toward the end of story mode became fairly tough to complete. Anyone that enjoys the genre of extreme sports games is definitely in for a treat with American Wasteland. You now have the freedom to ride forever.

The gameplay that honed our reflexes to the point that we could easily snatch a bullet out of the air has mysteriously vanished in this latest entry. Long gone are the glory days of spending countless hours concocting massive combo strings to achieve the sickest score possible. In American Wasteland, thrashing holds little relevance. Rather than standing tall as the greatest skater in the world, you are now pushed to secure the undesirable title of helper monkey.

On an absolute scale, Tony Hawk's American Wasteland is an incredible game. For a novice player the learning curve is prohibitively steep, but if they dig deep enough they'll find a huge wealth of value in the story mode, online play, customizable elements, and tons of moves available to your skater. On the other hand, seasoned players won't find much here that they haven't already done a bunch of times in previous Tony Hawk games - if you feel that the series has been losing its charm over the years, well, this one is only going to reinforce that feeling. But if you're just rabid for more skating action, then American Wasteland won't disappoint you (much).

Lesen Sie selbst!

Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland is a solid game that will give enthusiasts of the franchise yet another opportunity to tear up the competition while kicking butt and taking names. And, for the first time in several years, it doesn’t just add new tricks. It adds something that should have been here from the beginning of its time on Xbox -- online play. They’re a little late, but I’m, as well as others, glad to see the developers finally make the transition and take the Tony Hawk series into the 21st century. There’s not much more to say about Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland, so let’s end the review with one last verse from Madonna’s Hollywood. ‘’Check it out, this bird has flown.’’

It is old. This is true. The series has seen seven chapters now and many of you might run into the feeling that it's merely grinding its wheels at this point. But at least Neversoft didn't opt for Tony Hawk's Underground 3 and instead implied feeling into their effort, and the result will certainly reward fans. Tony Hawk's American Wasteland is one of the better grinders to come off the pike in some time, and those who don't mind building up million-point combos will find themselves in la-la-land for quite a while. Now if I could only get Aunt Bertha to get into the game. That'd be wild.

At the end of the day, this is another Tony Hawk game. If you liked the other ones, you’re bound to like American Wasteland. If you hated the other ones, you’re bound to hate this one. It isn’t perfect but the game is a lot of fun to play and still incredibly addictive. While the game’s limited variation from previous Tony Hawk’s titles prevent it from being a completely fresh experience, what is available does provide a solid skateboarding experience that combines the best aspects of the previous titles with a few new touches to offer a largely pleasing and enjoyable experience.

While I would argue that Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 was the purest skating experience so far, Tony Hawk's American Wasteland is the best that the series has been in a while. All of the new additions are an improvement, and the story's return to a focus on building a career rather than destroying your surroundings is welcome. Finally, Xbox owners are able to take their game to the online community. And issues such as an absence of an online park editor, a short Classic Mode, as well as story and presentation shortcomings are not enough to ruin the fun. Hopefully, future installments will only improve these areas.

There's nothing cosmetically wrong with Tony Hawk's American Wasteland. Sure, the story is a little short, and yes, they lied about no loading times, but this game is just as good as the previous instalments. However, that's the downfall right there. It's almost just the same as THUG2 - and to be quite honest, I'm starting to think NeverSoft are running out of ideas to keep the series fresh.

XboxOperation Sports
Through the deeper story mode, the sense of reality created through the L.A. environments, and the rock-solid Xbox Live experience, Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland accomplishes all of those things. Whether it’s your first or seventh Tony Hawk purchase, it's still worth every penny.

XboxVideo Game Talk
While it may not be the "best" of the Tony Hawk series, American Wasteland is right up there and definitely headed in a better direction than the way Underground went. There is nothing inherently wrong with the gameplay to keep it from getting a really high score. The trick system is solid, the online play is great, and the single player experience is good enough. The only real problem with the game is that we've simply had too much of Tony Hawk over the years, without a lot of innovation. Activision and Neversoft should step back from the series for a little while and release something in a couple years that will give fans enough reason to come back for more.

Some of the goals you're given to conquer in Story mode feel dull and shoddy, but there's always a whole bunch of them on offer for you to try your hand at including simple, oddjob side missions to earn a bit of cash for a new haircut or fancy hat to make you look cool in front of your pals. Thankfully, the bad vehicles and novelty rides from both THUG games are gone, and in their place is something a bit more useful - the BMX. This is a whole new mode of transport, complete with its own tricks and challenges, with a control system that's been tinkered with somewhat since the Dave Mirra games. If you're not already sold on Tony Hawk's games it won't change your mind, but it's a welcome and unobtrusive addition to the skateboarding action nonetheless.

Tony Hawk America's Wasteland is another excellent chapter in this wonderful series. I strongly recommend it, especially to any fans of the series. If you aren't a fan of the series, it's a great time to start playing since the plot is essentially one giant tutorial for learning skills and tricks versus Tony Hawk 1-4 where they threw you into the fire. It will also be more accessible to a general audience with the ability to get off of your skateboard and get to hard-to-reach areas with ease. Highly Recommended.

Tony Hawk veterans will definitely be happy with the gameplay improvements in American Wasteland. You still have the largest trick library thus far and a seamless re-creation of L.A. to skate/BMX in. The Tony Hawk series is the most prolific franchise in console games that doesn't revolve around a ball. I know what you're thinking- you want a power drink-fueled run with the Hawkster to the point that you're careening from empty pool to empty pool, seeking out the ultimate zen in tricks, and somewhere in the transition, you want him to skate right over the camera so you can see the trucks in detail, as if he was about to smack you in the face with them. Well...you won't get that this year.

As a dedicated fan of the Tony Hawk series, it was interesting to see how the series evolved from its early Tony Hawk Pro Skater years to its Underground phase. Each Tony Hawk game seemed to always pop up on a new console whether it was the Sega Dreamcast or the PlayStation 2, so it wasn’t a surprise when Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland landed as a launch title for the Xbox 360. Among the few Xbox 360 launch title originals and a large number of multiple platform releases already on the shelves, nothing much sets this American Wasteland apart from the one already available. Then again if you missed it the first time around you might just want to check this one out.

The venerable Tony Hawk series makes it's debut on the Xbox 360 with it's latest iteration, Tony Hawk's American Wasteland. While the title takes some advantage of the Xbox 360's graphical punch and utilizes the new and improved controller very well, it's exactly the same game our own Clay Shaver reviewed earlier this month.

The Tony Hawk series of games has been a massive success on all the platforms in the past. Now on its third series of titles (Pro Skater, Underground and now American Wasteland), it was a foregone conclusion that a version from the most recent set would be brought to the Xbox360, the first of the next gen consoles out of the gate. Back to the roots went the series with American Wasteland, stripping away all of the destruction themes of the past and starting over from scratch with the "skate punks earn respect" approach seen in early titles. While the gameplay itself is the great fun players have come to expect from the series, the developers have made the decision to not repeat their actions of the last generational jump. If you own the original version of THAW on the Xbox, then you already own this one as well.

In life, there are some things that are simply inevitable: death, taxes, Christmas, etc. Since 1999, there's been a new addition to that list—every fall will see the release of a new game in the Tony Hawk series. This year is no exception as the guys at Neversoft grind (pun fully intended) out yet another sequel in the form of Tony Hawk's American Wasteland. Since Neversoft is never content to merely make sequels, American Wasteland is essentially the third new iteration in the series' history—following in the footsteps of the Pro Skater and Underground games. It's a credit to the developers that they've been able to make so many games in this franchise in such a short amount of time yet haven't made a single game that felt like a rehash or an attempt to simply cash in. Each year's new installment of Tony Hawk is a lot like each year's Madden—the core gameplay might be the same as the last year's, but there's always something new in the mix that makes the current release unique.

The Tony Hawk series is the most prolific franchise in console games that doesn't revolve around a ball. Since its PlayStation debut a little more than six years ago, we've been treated to annual updates to an already-great series. Each one brings something different to the table, but how long before that table breaks under the weight of so many sequels?

Since 1999, there have been few video game franchises as prolific as the Tony Hawk series, from its Pro Skater beginnings to last year's THUG 2. And with each iteration, developer Neversoft finds a way to create a great game that keeps the masses coming back for more. Tony Hawk's American Wasteland continues the trend set by its predecessors by providing a rich gaming experience that will keep the controller glued to your hand until the break of dawn.

For a series that has had the tour, the persistent environment created for Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland is the perfect shot in the arm. But it seems this series needs additional life support to be interesting into the next-generation. The gameplay engine is showing its age, and the graphics hurt the story mode with some pretty poor cut-scenes. The online functionality is fab and the technical side of the gameplay is spot-on, but I’m not convinced this is enough to bring games that bailed (pre-Underground) back onto their boards.

In fact, the only noticeable differences between the PC version of THAW and any of the console offerings is the look of the game and option on online play for up to eight players, (which the GameCube edition lacked). Otherwise, the PC version looks sharper than the PS2 and GC versions, but that's something that's bound to be expected. In summary, if the PC is your gaming platform of choice and you've been itching for a bit of skateboarding action, then American Wasteland isn't a bad choice at all, (until the next inevitable Tony Hawk's game, of course). However, if you've already got American Wasteland on another platform then there's really no reason to merit splashing out with another thirty-quid to play something you already have, just because it looks a bit flashier.

At the end of the day the question is, is Tony Hawk's American Wasteland worth the money? It's kind a qualified answer. If you own an Xbox or PS2, there's no reason to shell out $10 more for the Xbox 360 version -- it's the exact same game with less noticeable graphical flaws. However, if you've been away from the Tony Hawk franchise for a few games and just dropped a bunch of cash for a 360, it's time to get re-acquainted with the King of Extreme Sports Games, even if some of the tricks may be well above your skill level and the story mode might be less than engrossing, you'll probably still have fun. However, even if Tony Hawk's American Wasteland is a good game, the action is feeling a little "samey" -- even compared to THPS4. Maybe it's time for Neversoft to completely retool the experience.

Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland comes to the Xbox 360 with nothing updated aside from the visuals. Yes, another day, another lazy port. The game is the exact same skateboarding title you’ve heard about on Xbox, except now it costs ten dollars more and you get a few additional polygons.

Schade!

I really have a love/hate relationship with the series. Some of the fundamentals are nailed right on the head (such as the combo system and level design), but other basic elements (physics, congruency, etc.) need to be drastically improved. Though some may argue that the Tony Hawk series grew stale long ago, I believe there is still room to improve, but developers Neversoft are likely going to have to change their design philosophy again in order to breathe new life into it. I almost feel that the series continues to get near-perfect scores based on the virtues of the original Pro Skater, but I can't, in good conscience, do the same.

In all honesty Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland isn’t a bad game. If you’ve never played a Tony Hawk game before, or haven’t played the series since the earlier games, it’s definitely worth a look. The controls are as tight as they ever were, and there is a substantial amount of content here. However, if last year you played through THUG 2, and you were bored with doing many of the same things over and over again, it’s probably a good idea to steer clear of this one. Maybe Neversoft won’t take a year off, but that doesn’t mean you can’t either.

While the gameplay in Tony Hawk's American Wasteland is still sharp, and the game still looks and sounds just fine, this seventh installment just seems to lack that special spark that made the series so much fun in the first place. The Tony Hawk series has always worked because even if you stripped away all the goals, pro skaters, and extra fluff packed into each annual installment, the simple act of finding lines and skating freestyle across the levels was great fun. Even with a handful of new tricks, simply skating around and grinding out huge lines only goes so far, especially when the levels are set up to make doing so incredibly easy. It's enough to make you think that maybe the series needs a year off to give it time to incorporate some dramatic new ideas that could revitalize the once-great franchise.

If you're a die-hard fan of the Tony Hawk games, American Wasteland is a solid addition to the franchise. Just be aware that you probably won't be seeing much innovation, and the gameplay is a little shorter than we're used to for the series. Tony Hawk newbies might want to make this one a rental before taking the plunge. It's short enough that you can get a feel for it without getting overwhelmed.

My first encounter with Tony Hawk Pro Skater came on my Sega Dreamcast and with great skepticism. I'd heard the hype, read the reviews and wondered just how good this game could really be. What I experienced was a revelation, and for three more installments of the franchise I was hooked. I loved the game. I took ownership of my little skater dude in his earning new stats, new clothing and skateboards. I competed in tournaments with a ferocity I had never exhibited in real life. I wrecked my roommates in vicious games of horse, tag and that multiplayer game where you trick off things to get it to turn red or blue. Then Tony Hawk went from Pro Skater to Underground and did exactly what I didn't want or need: Neversoft added a plot. That makes about as much sense to me as adding a plot to Madden ... oh wait, never mind they did that already. The series lost me with THUG and its silliness and wannabe CKY antics.

The story in THAW is actually pretty good for a game of this type. You fill the shoes of Random Midwestern Skater Kid #3, whose had it with the slow thinkers and constant hassles from The Man, gets on a bus and heads to the city where skating was born. After being robbed of all your 4H trophies the second you step off the bus, you meet Mindy, THAW's answer to Florence Nightingale. She takes pity on you and your sorry clothes and haircut. Mindy directs you to the local gear and coif shops and adds insult to injury by informing you that if you want to make it in Los Angeles, you also need the right look. I'm sorry.....what? Now reborn with new threads and trendy liberty spikes, Mindy clips the cord and you begin your journey through the streets of Los Angeles, eventually crossing paths with some skaters squatting in a place called The Ranch.

American Wasteland drops the ball with the story mode. It's too easy and it's too short. Some of the new additions, like the terrible BMX biking and even the cooler stuff like bert slides, are pretty worthless. The music is awful, and the world isn't as big as it was promised to be. Those complaints are my biggest ones, and even though I'm disappointed in so many ways, I still enjoyed the game. After I unlocked all of L.A. and I could skate around freely without worrying about goals, I had a lot more fun. I hope that Neversoft does a lot with the formula before they produce another Tony Hawk game. Make the game longer and the goals harder. Sift through the garbage in the gameplay and keep all of the good, helpful stuff while getting rid of the trash. Overall, fans of the series should probably check this out, but I'd say that Underground is still the best in the series.

Tony Hawk's American Wasteland (THAW) is the latest in the very popular Tony Hawk video game series. As is the goal with every Tony Hawk game, Neversoft is trying to rework the system and create a new experience for veterans of the franchise while at the same time appealing to a new crowd. Unlike past Tony Hawk games, though, the changes in American Wasteland center more on where you skate rather than how you skate. The result is a surprisingly fun yet disappointingly familiar experience. It is not to say THAW is a bad game, it really is enjoyable. It’s just that after so many Tony Hawk titles, the games, on some level, begin to feel the same.

Unfortunately for Mr. Hawk, his American Wasteland suffers from a lack of polygons. Most objects in Neversoft’s title are not defined enough for the standards that have already been set by other launch games on the Xbox 360. Non-player characters and player models are blocky, environments are low poly, and most textures are not well defined. In comparison to the original Xbox version of American Wasteland, there is an improvement on the Xbox 360, but it’s not as large a jump as other franchises have made while transitioning from the current generation to the next-gen platform. In fact, comparing the two games on a visual basis is like comparing a kick in the groin to a punch in the nose, only you wouldn’t pay for either one.

So when it's all said and done, what do we have? Tony Hawk's American Wasteland is a mix of the incredible, the mediocre, and the downright vomit-inducing, served up as a videogame shake that tastes somewhat above average. If they got rid of the elements that have nothing to do with thrashing, and focused solely on skateboarding like the series did before it started to go through all these crazy name changes (and like fans of the series have been clamoring for since THUG), Neversoft would have had one of the best games of the year.

Given that the game engine has reached a point where we can't realistically expect big changes for our hard-earned $50, the game's minor-at-best changes to the game design are to be expected. However, with the braindead goals, non-charismatic cast of characters, and relatively limited level list, the game is unfortunately relegated to rental status, with its best points making us reminiscent of the days when you actually had to be good to beat a Tony Hawk game.

A bit of mixed feelings with this latest "Tony Hawk American Wasteland" game for Xbox 360. At first the game looks alright but I was really hoping that developer Neversoft didn't tear up whole LA into nine areas. It would have been much better, like San Andreas if the player could just skate on and on. New tricks are at your disposal which will let you do some impressive combos. Graphics & Sound are alright and for the first time, 'Live' support is included. A game with great fundamentals ever but mainly for Hawkers or skateboard novices. If you still want to try it out, I suggest download the free demo first on X-Box Live before you buy it. It's just good advice.

After playing the PS2 version and waiting endlessly for things to load, this version was a breath of fresh air. The game offered a few hours of fun play. Overall, the game is a little too easy.

Regardless of how it looks or sounds, American Wasteland just feels like a step backwards from previous Tony Hawk games. The levels aren't nearly as interesting as they should be, it's far too easy, and they didn't add much to the over all game play. Even if you've mastered all of the older Tony Hawk titles you may still want to try this one out before you sink your $50 on this installment. It's not a bad game; it's just forgotten what made the first six entries so good. Let's hope Neversoft realizes their mistakes and gives us something really special for the 2006 model.

Tony Hawk American Wasteland will appeal to Tony Hawk fans because it's more of the same in a different wrapping. I quite enjoyed Underground 2's last story and it was my favorite out of the bunch, but American Wasteland is trying hard to win me over. Concerning the Xbox 360, this is in no way a next gen title; it's a graphically enhanced port. I'm sure next year we will have the proper launch of Tony for the 360. In the world of sequels it isn’t always a good thing to keep slapping another title onto the franchise; Rocky V was a total joke, and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles should never have made a third film, so can the seventh generation of Tony Hawk’s family of games still pack the awesome punch of the original? Innovation while staying true to the original heart of the title has kept film franchises like James Bond 007 from losing their loyal fan base, a lesson Neversoft seems to have taken to heart Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland ups the franchise’s ante with more levels, unrestricted classic play, and the addition of parkour moves and a BMX bike while still keeping the skate punk tradition alive.

“Skate or Die!” Ever since those words blasted over the 4” full-range of 720° at my local arcade, I’ve been hooked on skating games. Sucks that I had to wait ten years for another decent skate franchise to surface (no offense to Epyx and their half-pipe doing in Summer Games). Activision and Neversoft nailed Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater the first time, firmly grabbed my attention, and I haven’t looked back since.

I was understandably excited when Activision announced that Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland would be available for the Xbox 360’s launch. I really didn’t know what to expect, seeing as how the current Xbox has already been privy to a skate title of the exact same name. Virtual skating is a tough job, but somebody has to do it….

Activision brings another current gen title to the Xbox 360 so nobody misses out. Just like GUN, there isn't much here besides a port of the current-gen versions. You'll be able to notice sharper graphics and more details, which add to the game considering it wasn't the greatest looking game in the first place. The game is also smoother and doesn't show signs of framerate droppage that would occur once in a while on the Xbox version. I don't see why they felt they needed or get away with charging $60. It's fun but not a true next-gen title.

They say that the number seven is a lucky number. Well, lucky for me, I was given the chance to review Tony Hawk's American Wasteland -- the seventh home console iteration of the behemoth Tony Hawk franchise. Having felt this series had been Hawk'd up one time too many with when the Tony Hawk Underground games came out, I've had a pretty good break from the franchise. Before playing it, I was eager to see how the game would translate on the new Xbox 360 console, despite the negative hype the game received since its underwhelming unveiling during the Xbox 360 MTV preview. Despite the bad press the game has gotten, American Wasteland is still probably the most complete Hawk game, and it will be should be enough to impress long-tome fans of the franchise while the developers work on making a true next-gen game.

For gamers who still haven't sampled from the Tony Hawk buffet, Tony Hawk's American Wasteland wouldn't be a bad way to get started. Since it compiles many of the environments and gameplay elements of the prior game, it's quite a sampling of the entire franchise. However, anyone who's played any of the earlier games will want to rent, or even pass on, this game. It's full of great ideas from the past, but the storyline lacks any elements of fun, and the other gameplay modes and areas are available in earlier Hawk titles. It's really time Tony, Activision and NeverSoft all put this franchise out to pasture, because after playing this, I was very happy that I had never gotten rid of my copy of THPS 2.

Neversoft has created yet another Tony Hawk skateboarding game in the franchise. This new game called Tony Hawk's American Wasteland uses the core base of the Tony Hawk's Underground series. So instead of focusing on the basic skateboarding gameplay, it throws in a neat story in there as well. American Wasteland is on all platforms, but is it worth paying the extra cash for the 360 version? Sadly the answer is no. American Wasteland is a terrific game, but it's not worth paying for it on the 360, especially if you already have a copy of it on another console.

While American Wasteland is not a bad game by any means, it definitely is way below the standards of the 360. With a short and easy story and classic mode, you won't play this one by yourself for long. The multiplayer is fun online if there were actually someone to play it with. I'd highly recommend playing the current generation version and saving yourself the extra $10 expense. There is no reason to buy it for the 360 unless you don't own the current generation release.

Tony Hawk fans will probably find Tony Hawk's American Wasteland a must-buy, but I really think the franchise is starting to get as overexposed as Mega Man. (Okay, maybe not that bad.) Since I last reviewed this title on the PS2, I must say, I think I may have given this game more credit than it deserved. In hindsight, while it still remains a decent title, because of its replay value, it doesn’t seem as comfortable on the 360, and in the end, can be very frustrating to play. Still, it can be fun, but unfortunately, you aren’t going to get much more out of the 360 version as compared to any other.

Don't let the recent name changes or Tony Hawk's debut on a new video game system fool you. Tony Hawk's American Wasteland is the seventh Tony Hawk game developed by Neversoft in as many years. Over the years the series has had installments that made dramatic changes to the formula, but the more recent installments have focused less on gameplay or structural changes and more on including a story. American Wasteland is the game that finally makes good on the story thing by offering a plot that's far more interesting than it has been in the previous two versions. It also attempts to put all its levels together into one big take on Los Angeles that's free from loading times.

To give a little credit where it's due, you have to hand it to Neversoft for managing to keep the Tony Hawk franchise alive as long as it has, in spite of losing the Pro Skater tag and dragging the series away from its board-based roots into the more surreal, motorised contraptions found in the two Underground titles.

Tony Hawk should be ashamed. He should have thought about signing a contract to a series that would end up like Wasteland. The title is appropriate not because it's tied into the story, but because the game is a wasteland of stupid, unfunny, and irritating challenges. The $60 price doesn't help matters.
