There's so much more one could say about Tony Hawk 4 without rambling on, but it can only be done justice by going out and playing it yourself. Some of us can remember the old days when games like 720 on the NES were popular, and very little can prove how far the consumer market of electronic games has come more than Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4.

My thumbs are sore and my hands ache. These are good pains, though, caused by playing Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4 for hours on end. From the moment I put the game into my PS2 and the intro video started, I have enjoyed every second I have spent with THPS4. Lay your fears about this game to rest. It isn’t too easy; it isn’t too short, and it definitely isn’t just a rehash of THPS3. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4 is the best game in the series and is sure to make gamers everywhere very happy.

The more I play Tony 4, the more I keep drawing comparisons between it and Grand Theft Auto III. Let me explain. First off, the game's goals are so diverse, you can't help but come back for more, if only to see what outrageous challenges await you next. Whether it's driving a shopping cart around Alcatraz as Bam Margera or mastering a topless loop with Bob Burnquist, each challenge offers something unique. Second, Tony 4 completely immerses you in skate culture, the same way GTA3 made you feel like you were inside an episode of The Sopranos. Lastly, the Career mode gives you a ton of freedom, allowing you to putz around all you want. Plus, the online stuff is smokin'. Skaters and gamers are going to love this. It's one of those rare must-own titles.

All in all Tony Hawk 4 is a great game. I am not sure that I would agree with some other gaming sites and be so quick to give it Game of The Year recognition, but it is in fact worth playing. If you have played Tony Hawk in the past and you are burned out on the concept, then at least give this game a try and rent it for the weekend. I don't regret the purchase of this game and I don't think you will either. I may not be into many sports games, but aggressive sports like skating and snowboarding are definitely games I get hyped up to play.

Even with a new engine powering the game and larger, more detailed levels, these screens may not look dramatically different from THPS3. However, the changes should become obvious when you play it yourself later this month.

In the end, if you expected anything lower than a mid-9 for Tony Hawk 4, you're underestimating Neversoft's dedication to constantly improving the series with every new iteration. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 sports everything Tony Hawk 3 sported, but takes it all to the next level. With larger landscapes, broader move set, flashy as hell flat land tricks, a much more immersive career mode, revamped online mode, great roster, even cleaner visuals, and more improvements, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 is a must buy PS2 title for the upcoming holiday season. It's got everything you want, and nothing you don't. And while the soundtrack is under whelming to someone like myself, I'm sure there are countless who'll eat it up. Regardless, Tony Hawk is back once again, and still retains every bit of its addictive nature as the past three have. This one's a keeper, no doubt about it.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4 soared to infinite and WAY beyond my expectations for it. The same great Tony goodness is back with better graphics, more and cooler tricks (read: lazy a$$ manual), better sound, and the whole damn game has been completely revamped. The replay value goes through the roof with over 120 goals to complete (trust me, some of them aint’ easy), a TON of different gaps (where you jump from one thing to another without touching the ground) per level, there are new hidden characters that are a blast to play with once unlocked (including a certain somebody from the Star Wars universe, excluding Darth Maul), and...lets just say this, THPS4 is the butter on the corn, cheese on the sandwich, and hair on your head. Just like GTA: VC, every PS2 owner should own THPS4, and that’s no joke.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City is the other big name this holiday season and is being described as ‘bigger, better, badder.’ Tony Hawk returns with a similar stance: ‘bigger, better, faster.’ Not only does it boast huge levels with superior design, but also a fresh career mode that allows players to experience the surroundings more than ever. Since PlayStation 2 is the only version to feature support for online play and has the most accurate controls in my opinion, it goes unmatched. Even if you’ve been opposed to the concepts behind the previous installments of the series, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4 is refined enough to appeal to just about everyone willing to sit down with the latest serving of Hawk excellence.

GameCubeNetjak
Overall, there is a reason that Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4 is one of the most anticipated games of the season. It’s a vast improvement over its predecessors, and there’s enough play value to get considerably more than your money’s worth, especially if you try to complete all 190 goals in the game. While beginners might want to cut their teeth on some of the earlier games before trying this installment, veterans should have already been at the store before even reading this far. It’s that good. If Activision can continue to improve on the series in every installment as well as this game has, then the Tony Hawk franchise should be alive and well for years and years to come.
96
PlayStation 2GameSpy
Out of the three versions of THPS4, this is the best one. It may be slightly harder on the eyes than the GameCube and Xbox editions, but it has two huge advantages: the Dual Shock 2 and refined online play. Since the series started on the PlayStation, it makes a certain amount of sense that the control scheme is geared towards Sony's controller.

Graphically, Tony Hawk’s 4 looks fantastic, with nicely detailed skateparks and characters who actually resemble their real-life counterparts. The wide selection of levels, each of which are packed with challenges, ensures that even the most hardcore skater is going to have his or her work cut out finishing this game quickly, and even if they do, the Park Creator option offers almost unlimited longevity. About the only criticism you can make of this game in fact, is that it’s just about impossible to play on the keyboard, with four directional buttons and seven trick keys requiring an almost unattainable level of manual dexterity. However, get yourself a USB gamepad and you’ve got a game that’s second to none…

XboxArmchair Empire, The
Somehow Neversoft has done it yet again, by giving the extreme sports gamer another high-quality title worth every cent. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4 has it all: huge and creatively designed levels, a great new trick system, improved graphics, another great soundtrack, and push-it-to-the-limit goals that even veteran THPS gamers will need time to master. No doubt about it, if you like good games you can’t go wrong with THPS4. It’s simply one of the best and most enjoyable gaming experiences around in any genre.

XboxGame Vortex
Online capabilities in Tony Hawk 4 would have been the icing on the cake in a near-perfect game. But to enjoy a full 8-player mayhem, you will have to have two games, two Xbox's, and eight controllers. Link them together, invite your 7 closest friends to your house, and have a serious skate session. Luckily, the game is so good that you're bound to know someone else who is already enjoying every drop of skateboarding mojo flowing from its veins, so finding a friend shouldn't be all that hard.

While this game is very excellent, I don't believe any game can be perfect. My only, albeit, small gripe is the lack of stuff you can use to customize your created skater. And no online support. Anyway, this game if very fun, and well worth the 50 dollars that will be spent on it. Even if this game was 70 dollars, I would still buy it because it is extremely fun. The combination of excellent graphics, high-quality sounds, vast gameplay, and very high replay value make this a very fun game worth the time, effort, and money. And with stages that rival Grand Theft Auto 3. You have nothing to loose. Now, will you please excuse me? I have some grinding to do.

Overall, Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4 was a great game for Playstation 2. It comes over almost completely intact for the Mac, but still feels like a console game. You lose the mouse and the menus can feel impersonal, but the game play is solid and will keep you coming back for hours.

WindowsArmchair Empire, The
One of these days, we at the Armchair Empire might have to tell gamers about a Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater title that isn’t any good. But until then, we’ll just have to gush about the gaming greatness that is the latest rendition of the best skating game ever, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4 (THPS4). Not only is this the greatest THPS yet, but as always is one of the year’s best games. Period.
95
GameCubeGaming Target
Excellent as always, the game repeats the ways of the past in which sound really does make the game. Audio effects strewn through the background are dead on every time. Listening to the scrapes of the rolling wheels of your board over pavement and screeches over the grinding of a railing has never sounded more lifelike. It's undeniably unreal in how far the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater has gotten, with now an entire wealth of character voices to add to every individual the engine pushes out (including the Create-A-Skaters themselves).
95
PlayStation 2GameSpot
While fans of the previous games will find the redesigned career mode a little foreign at first, it definitely makes for a longer game with a lot less repetition than you saw in previous installments, which asked you to play the game over and over again with each skater to unlock their secrets. The deeper single-player and improved multiplayer modes make Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 the most tightly packed installment in the series to date, and the slightly refined gameplay is still unmatched in the action sports arena.
94
PlayStation 2FileFactory Games / Gameworld Network
Big levels, a meaty Career Mode, tons of objectives and unlockable items, and Neversoft?s blue-ribbon gameplay system help to make Tony Hawk?s Pro Skater 4 into arguably the best game of the series so far.

XboxXBox Solution (XBS)
Actvision O2 can do no wrong. At first I was worried this would just be a re-hash of THPS3, but the innovative new twist to the gameplay makes it fresh again. This game is just a hell of a lot of fun. If the older installments kept you trying to get better at the competitions and tricks, I highly recommend this game!
94
XboxGameSpy
It seems very strange to me that this game didn't have official Xbox Live support. It's a natural fit that really could have bolstered Xbox Live. Rather than dwell on that point, let's focus on the positive: this is still one of the best Xbox games of the year.
93
GameCubeNintendojo
While for the most part the tried and true Tony Hawk gameplay is still intact, this latest release in the series gives it a breathe of freshness. Both the casual and hardcore gamer will enjoy its fun and addictive nature. While the Spine Transfer and Skitch move may not change the gameplay drastically, they offer welcome additions to any players Combo routines. Tony Hawk is a game that defined a whole genre, and anyone who plays this game can easily understand why.
93
PlayStation 2Atomic Gamer
I would definitely recommend this one to anyone who has enjoyed a previous THPS game, as it is easily the biggest and best one yet. There are a ton of goals to complete, insanely hard challenges that'll keep you coming back, and the best online play yet.
93
GameCubeGamersMark
THPS4’s gameplay is essentially the same solid controls and moves as THPS3’s with the addition of the spine transfer which allows the player to transfer over a ’’spine’’ (two quarter-pipe ramps placed back to back) by pressing R2 when launching off of one side of the spine. Another addition is ’’Skitchin’’ cars by grabbing a car’s back bumper so it can pull you forward. (Like what Marty McFly does in the Back to the Future movies.) The game also includes some new moves and specials as well. If you’ve been playing this series since its inception you should be very familiar with its controls. However, this means that if you have never played any of the earlier THPS games you will face a bit of a learning curve.
93
GameCubeGameZone
Basically, what we’ve got here is a Tony Hawk game that refines and polishes nearly every conceivable aspect of the franchise and then goes the extra mile. Some of the stuff you’ll run across in this game, especially the mini-games, are downright surprising with their off-kilter approach and sometimes hilarious payload. The possibility of pulling off that impossible score is one step closer thanks to the new spine-transfer move and while a bit more innovation might have enhanced this already stellar production, I am hardly inclined to complain. As is always the case with a new Tony Hawk game: get it, it rocks like you won’t believe and you will not be disappointed.

GameCubeGameSpy
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 is one of the best titles available on the GameCube. Its depth and addictiveness is second to none. If the GameCube is your only console, then I wholeheartedly recommend this game. The Xbox's LAN capabilities and the PS2's Internet options give those versions more value. And the GCN controller is a poor substitute for a Dual Shock 2. While these are certainly notable detractions, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater for the GameCube remains a topnotch title.
93
PlayStation 2IGN
Easily the best Tony Hawk game yet, and online multiplayer makes it the best complete package in the genre. Even the silliness of the edited soundtrack isn't as bad as what happened to "Police Truck" in the original game, or the empty chorus to "Guerilla Radio" in Hawk 2. The score would make a little more sense had we not gotten so carried away last fall with Hawk 3, but some things you can't do anything about.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 does it again and brings extreme skateboarding to even more satisfying heights with its various challenges and added extras. This is the most fun you’ll have on a board without actually being on one. Go ahead and buy it, you can thank me later.

PlayStation 2Game Informer Magazine
Tony Hawk 4’s gameplay is just as seductive and overpowering as the previous entries in the series, but rather than sticking with the tried and true formula in its entirety, Neversoft revamped the Career mode and sought out new means to keep gamers on the edge of their seats. The outcome of these efforts showcases fine craftsmanship and an unyielding desire to take the series to new heights. While commendable in execution, the changes that have been implemented may in fact alienate a good portion of the fan base. For much of the game, rather than pushing players skills to the limit and forcing them to concoct massive combos lines, the challenges you are faced with seem more appropriate for Jackass: The Video Game than the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater series.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 is easily the best game in the series, and a bigger leap over its predecessor than any of the previous games were. The Birdman returns to the PC in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4, the latest installment in the acclaimed series to hit the PC. However, it’s still a port of a great game and, as the saying goes, better late than never.

If you get a real kick out of playing Pro Skater with other people, then the online mode is a sure selling point on the PS2. From what I've seen, it's very stable. Even if you aren't interested in the online portion, Activision and Neversoft have still nailed down another extremely solid sequel to the Tony Hawk franchise. Go ahead and pick your favorite system and help yourself to another dose of the best skating game franchise on the planet.

Activision's Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series has thrust extreme sports into popular culture since its inception in 1999. What began as an idea for a skateboarding game has become the de facto standard for all extreme sports titles to live up to. Many might say that just as Madden is to football, so is Tony Hawk's Pro Skater to extreme sports. It accomplished this so quickly because it defined what gaming addiction is all about. The formula of including the best pro skaters, most extensive trick list, a never-ending combo system, and brilliant level design keeps gamers coming back with frothing mouths.

While it’s sad that Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4 for Xbox doesn’t natively support Internet play, there’s still plenty to celebrate. Near-perfect single-player action will haul in fans of the series and newcomers alike, as the expanded move list and levels make for much more satisfying gameplay. The Two-Player and System Link modes are quite fun and introduce a new mix of matches for your competitive enjoyment. All in all, Pro Skater 4 isn’t a massive leap forward for the series, but a massive and refined expansion upon its original premise. Shaking free of the N64 and PSOne’s limited memory, this first next-gen exclusive Pro Skater is exactly what it should be: both bigger and better.

You’ll be hard pressed trying to 100% complete the career mode. You’ll sure as hell be rewarded by doing so with all the cash you earn by buying the countless tricks, clothing, movies, and other hidden objects in the skater shop. The Create-a-Skater and Park Editor are better then ever by finally getting the depth they’ve needed. The multi player has plenty of ways to play from, but with only two players split screen instead of having up to four (like the previous two X-Box games had). Also, no Live support is simply ludicrous on Neversoft’s part.

Welcome to the world of Neversoft’s Tony Hawk 4. Ok, I know you’ve all said it, “Extreme sports games are played out.” Well, Tony Hawk 4 will change your opinion entirely. The 4th installment has rid itself of the off the wall physics and outlandish trick scores that plagued Tony Hawk 3. No longer can I score a 700,000 point combo in the first 20 seconds of gameplay. Though that doesn’t help for bragging rights, it does add difficulty and realism to this installment. This, among many other improvements, bridges the gap to the latest Tony Hawk game and makes the game worth owning.

What can I say? The game still captures me and won't let go, for one more year Tony is the king of extreme sports. Adding just enough to keep it fresh as well as leaving the good points alone for the veterans. I hope that next year Neversoft takes advantage of the superior consoles and beefs them up before release. Other than that nothing to complain about another outstanding year for team Neversoft!

Neversoft has had the formula for fun down from the very start, and have done nothing but make it better since then. Once you start playing, you won’t be able to stop, and with more character-specific goals than ever before, reply value is cranked way up. With 190 goal, or Pro Points to earn, and a basketful of new movies, there’s no way you should find yourself bored with this one. However, 190 points with 13 skaters is slightly tedious, but throw in 25 cash icons in each level and it may become a chore to 100% the game with every character. But to fully enjoy this game, who ever said you’d need to do that? With pick-up-and-play gameplay that takes 5 minutes to learn but a lifetime to perfect, THPS4 is a masterpiece of a game, taking the highly respected series to a whole new level and well-worth your hard earned money.

Though THPS4 may not be the best introduction to the series due to its steep learning curve, it makes an excellent follow-up for the legions of THPS fans already out there. All in all this is a fine addition to the THPS lineage, although it does ramp up the difficulty quite considerably on the previous incarnations. This really shouldn't be seen as a bad thing however as you will get more enjoyment and lifespan out of this title than ever before.

Making sequels is a dangerous business. One slipup, and the developer gets accused of milking a franchise for a quick buck, of playing it safe instead of innovating, of letting a series slide into irrelevance.

After playing (and loving) Tony Hawk 3, it was clear that Neversoft would have to pull something out of their ass if they were going to sell me on Pro Skater 4. But to my utter amazement, they’ve done the unthinkable yet again. The restructured career mode and new challenges are exactly what the game needed, helping bring the series in directions I never even thought possible, but, at the same time, I’m not afraid to say that I’ve grown at least a little sick of Tony Hawk over the past few months. Maybe it’s because I’ve played each and every game in the series to the point that I see trick lines in my sleep, or perhaps it’s because this is Neversoft’s third Tony Hawk Xbox release in less than a year (and I own them all, I might add). Whatever it is, it may very well take an act of God to get me to buy into Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5. But with Neversoft behind the wheel, I wouldn’t be surprised.

You might ask yourself, "Self, since we already have three Tony Hawk games, what can a fourth offer?". Your self would answer that Tony Hawk 4 makes enough small changes to create an even better experience.

While fans of the previous games will find the redesigned career mode a little foreign at first, it definitely makes for a longer game with a lot less repetition. The deeper single-player mode and improved multiplayer modes make Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 the most tightly packed installment in the series to date, and the slightly refined gameplay is still unmatched in the action-sports arena. In short, anyone with even a remote interest in either the genre or the real-life sport should purchase this game as soon as possible, provided he or she is willing to invest in a quality gamepad.

Personally I think this game is definitely worth a purchase, although my opinion is probably positively affected by the fact that I haven’t played either one of the first 3 Tony Hawk games. Gamers who aren’t a hardcore fan will get this ‘I have seen this before, only with uglier graphics’ feeling after a while. Those who don’t have problems with a bit of déja-vu will have a very good time playing this fourth episode of the Tony Hawk series. The 190 very varied goals produce hours of fun … but beware: the first weekend of gaming can cause blisters...

Ok, as mentioned above, there is blood, as well as some objectionable songs on the soundtrack. There is also a little bit of bad language, none of which involve the Lord?s Name in vain, which is definitely a plus. The content descriptors say that there are suggestive themes, but there are none that I can see. The game is pretty clean in that respect, but not as clean as Mat Hoffman?s Pro BMX 2, but this is the far better game. Check it out.

With a Greatest Hits price of $19.99 or even cheaper these days, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4 is well worth an investment when it comes to skateboarding games. The THPS series has always been the best games of their particular genre, compared to other "extreme sports" games. In my mind, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4 is the perfect skateboarding game that encompasses all of the best things from the series before they went in a new direction with the Underground series. There hasn’t been another "Pro Skater" title since. The value of the game has been diminished since the shutting down of the online servers, and it will be missed by the few who still held this game as the pinnacle of the series.

Vicarious Visions proves that its GameBoy Advance ports of “Tony Hawk 3 & 4” were no flukes. The redesigned mission structure and expanded universe of tricks from the next-generation installments of “Tony Hawk 4” made the cut. Unfortunately there are so many technology-imposed sacrifices in this 32-bit port (increased draw-in, choppy animation, no mini-games, etc.) that any other version of “Tony Hawk 4” should be considered before this one. Portable PSOne owners with a long road trip ahead or despondent third-world gamers will be this title’s most likely consumers.

Absolutes Suchtgame!

What else can I say about Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4? It's easily the best version yet, and is as solid and polished as I would expect. I'm not really sure how much new ground they can cover in the next installment, as I really feel the series has plateaued. Maybe the next next-gen iteration will have more photorealistic visuals and perfect online play, but for now, THPS4 is probably about the best an extreme sports game can get.

In spite of the tough start newbies are likely to experience, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 is a fun and addictive rush that anyone should try out at least. Besides, I'm sure that by now players are certain of what they're getting into when playing THPS games. They have always offered a solid slice of skateboarding goodness, bringing a few pleasing innovations with each new installment. So you can't go wrong either way. It's just a question of how much you enjoy skateboarding as a sport.

I've put plenty of hours into THPS4 and have decided that if you have never played any of the games in the series, I urge you to pick this one up straight away. If you don't think skating is for you, give it a hire anyway. Veterans of the series on the other hand, will be able to make a solid choice for themselves - you know what to expect from the game. Overall, THPS4 passed my enjoyment meter, though the series is getting old after the fourth instalment. They should leave on a good note and try something new.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 may not be a perfect game, granted, but there is no doubt in our minds that this is one of the titles to beat in 2003: addictive, highenergy (and nonviolent) fun with lots of surprises, replay value and a driving rock soundtrack to boot. A skater couldn't ask for much more than that.

If you enjoyed the previous Tony Hawk games, you will probably like this one too. It still has the same core gameplay mechanics, but with some very good improvements. Of course I also recommend it to people who haven't tried the series before, the easy-to-learn and rewarding gameplay should appeal to pretty much everyone who likes platform or action-sport games.

When it all boils down to it, there's no doubting that this new instalment of Tony Hawk just about manages to scrape it as the definitive skating game out today... and that's after we've taken the shockingly impressive Aggressive Inline into account as well.

Is there anything left to say? Definitely. We're guessing that newcomers are now wondering whether this is the game to rob them of their skating virginity, and those of you with as much vested interest as we have will be wondering whether this is going to do anything new for them. To the newcomers, we'd say no, don't go for THPS4, go for THPS3, which is happily available on budget for less than 20 pounds. Easier, tighter, brighter. Go now. The rest of you? It all comes down to one thing - are you bored of THPS3? Do you moan about it to your friends? Would you say you're now bitter, cynical and jaded when it comes to skating games? If you are, then THPS4 is unlikely to reawaken your passion for the series, but if you honestly do fancy more of the same in brand new arenas with a lot more actual content than previous editions, this is definitely worth your money.

The game is more akin to Jet Grind Radio now; like a platformer on wheels, but there is nothing wrong with this. With multiplayer which almost mirrors previous instalments, Tony Hawk 4 isn’t as essential as the publishers would like to think. It does contain new gameplay, but the series is perfectly good as it is. Undoubtedly Tony Hawk’s 4 is a great game, but the only direction now for the series to go is in expansion. Extra modes, extra levels and extra characters, but no more gameplay innovation. The series has reached its pinnacle, which is why Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4 isn’t a necessary purchase. It’s the perfect game, but one which we’ve all seen before.

If you are a THPS addict, pick this one up. Casual fans might want to wait for THPS5 (or 6 or 7, since you know they are coming), especially because this game has no online play. Come on, Activision, this series just begs for Live support!

The recipe is successfull and holds the essence of the Tony Hawk titles - but THPS4 could have offered a more. Perhaps. Maybe. We can always wish. What I left totally unmentioned were the extra-features of the game, and I should probably give you a short conclusion of them. Create-A-Skater is a feature which gives you the ability to create your own personal skater with your name, country, hometown and birth-year. You can set the appearance of the skater to your liking, this including clothing. Nothing earth-shattering, but quite fun nonetheless. The other feature is Create-a-Park -editor where you can build your own park from scratch. Being quite limited, yet free enough, it is a nice little addition although leaves room for improvements. The real Tony Hawk revolutionarized the ramp-world and attempted bold, never-before-seen tricks such as "the 900" - so why don't you, Neversoft, follow his footsteps and go beyond your previous success?

Activision and Neversoft have found a cash cow in the Tony Hawks series of games, ever since skateboarding was deemed to be hip and cool once more. This success has enabled the expansion into several other "extreme" sports genres with licensed names such as Matt Hoffman and Kelly Slater. With the release of the fourth game in the potentially never-ending series, have Neversoft come up with something different and exciting, or are they merely milking the cow this time around?

Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 was the first of the series to be ported to the Macintosh. Like most good sequels, it built upon the foundation of the first game and added key features to make it a must-have title. Now, Aspyr Media brings Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 (THPS 3) and Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4 (THPS 4) to the Macintosh platform. If you’re familiar with Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2, then THPS 3 and THPS 4 should be like riding a bike. A graphically beautiful bike with fluid game play and hour upon hour of challenging, fast, fun game play.

If you don’t own many or any Tony Hawks games then this may be something fresh for you, but for a lot of people it is more of the same. You wouldn’t eat four bowls of toffee ice cream would you? You may have one toffee, then a chocolate. If they are to make another game, which they most likely will, it would have to be more revolutionary than this effort.

Ultimately, then, Neversoft has presented us with their latest package and the receiving is bittersweet. There's a new design scheme. It's sweet because it's different, bitter because it takes away a lot of what made the franchise cool. And so it is with the whole game. The new is cool, but then you realize that what we had wasn't so bad in the first place. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 marks a bend in the road. We've gone down it and there's really no going back to what we had before. As such bends go, this one isn't really terrible. The game is still very playable and it will likely keep you busy for nearly as long as its immediate predecessor. How much more or less time you spend with it is really up to personal preference. Whatever you expect, though, don't think this one is more of the same. It is to a certain extent, but not so much as it isn't.

Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4 is a well made game, it just serves no purpose. There's not enough game in here to make it interesting for those even slightly outside its strict target audience, and there's not enough new abilities in here to make it interesting for many who already own THPS2 or 3. I feel like this game's some kind of inside joke I don't get, and no one on the inside wants to explain it to me. Regardless, for skateboarding fans, an afternoon at the local skate park watching the talent is more fun than playing this game. And there, you have the potential of watching some kid wipe out, which is always a good time. Take your camcorder, remember. People will happily pay good money to watch the misfortune of others.

It didn't win me over, but like any Tony Hawk title, TH4 still has that strangely addictive quality, and Tony Hawk veterans will relish the challenge. Regardless, it's plain to see that a shift in the series was necessary, resulting in the subsequent "Underground" line of titles.
