Too Human is not for everyone; its gameplay style and/or narrative themes may turn some gamers away before they can even jump into Asgard. The game is, however, a triumph in everything it aims to do. It tells [the beginnings of] an intriguing story through breathtaking cinematography and narrative, introduces a unique and effective combat system, and allows players to personalize their gameplay experience with an extensive amount of customization options. This is an excellent videogame.

The bottom line with Too Human is that there's unlikely to be a sense of indifference woven through its critical and consumer reception, there will be love, and there will be hate. Those who hate it will throw down the controller a long time before the ass-serving and seemingly shallow controls give way to fulfilling battles and a truly awesome character; while those who love it will stubbornly plough forward from death to death, ever-reaching for the next level, and the next level, in order to experience the sheer visceral pleasure of directing Baldur in his almost invincible dance of death.

I won’t argue that the game is perfect, hell it has a lot more problems that some other games out there; the one thing it does have that is very important is the fun-factor. The single player experience was enough to make me happy with my purchase but full on-line (can we get a co-op game to include offline play) co-op play helps me recommend this game even more. Too Human is one of the most addicting games that I put into my 360 in a long time and for that I want to ask Denis for my countless hours of my life back. If World of Warcraft had a baby with Star Wars and the doctor pumped it full of steroids the final result would be Silicon Knight’s Too Human; if that doesn’t sound like something you would be interested in try the demo or rent before picking up the full game at retail, available everywhere today. For me it was worth the wait.

I love games like this and I am more then willing to look past the flaws and learning curve to play the game and enjoy it. This is a buy for action and RPG fans, but you have to give it a shot for a few hours this is not your standard action game.
Overall the game has more negatives going on than positives. Too Human is a good game for one simple reason though and that is because it is simply entertaining to play. Forget the graphics, cut scenes, little glitches, stupid supporting AI and the voice acting and concentrate on the excellent gameplay engine Silicon Knights have built. You will find yourself playing the same levels over and over again to build up your character and power up your inventory, while having a ton of fun. If only the game offered a few more levels for us to explore, it would have made the game a much better experience overall. Luckily Too Human is the first game in a trilogy, so we are eagerly looking forward to more great games in the series very soon

Again, overall the game is very well done and should be played by anyone that like a good action game or even an RPG. If you liked Oblivion than you should give this game a try for sure. Odds are that you won't be disappointed. Online co-op would probably have been better if they would have allowed up to 5 people as then you would have been able to form a group using each character class. As it stands, there isn't much value to the different classes as is other than giving you a little replay value in the single player.
This is defiantly one of those games that you will either love or hate. A lot of games have felt that way this year and it is a real shame. Too Human was hyped up to be one of those games that gamers will adore for years. If you can look past the problems Too Human has then you will find a good game.

The environments boast secrets and forking paths, and random ambushes strive to make your umpteenth time through an area fresh, but it's ultimately the inspired intermingling of the disparate abilities bestowed on partnered players that makes Too Human worth playing. After logging more than two dozen hours on these battlefields, the long resurrection sequences and flakey targeting still drove me up the wall, but the unpredictable online alliances, the varied loot, and rewarding combat kept me going back for more. No, it's not perfect but it's still pretty damn fun.

After a long wait and much uncertainty, Too Human easily reaches the standards set by Silicon Knights' previous work. Merging the addictive qualities of Diablo with a thoroughly innovative and entertaining combat system, Too Human offers an engaging blend of instant gratification and long-term depth despite the occasional failing.

Having said that, Too Human is still an awesome game that I have not been able to put down for two and a half weeks, I have played one character almost to the level 50 cap, despite knowing that I'll be unable to transfer him to my retail 360 at the game's launch. The game is that well constructed, and when it's firing on all cylinders there' nothing out there that can beat it for sheer satisfaction. It's just that it doesn't become the sum of its parts, but each part rocks on its own. The best news is that this game is the beginning of a trilogy and the foundation established here bodes so well for it's follow up that the game Too Human wanted to be is just waiting in the wings, wings that better just be two years away.

There’s a lot to like about Too Human if you’re an action/RPG fan. However, if you’re not, it does little to bring new fans into the fold. You just get the impression it could’ve come closer to perfection with a bit more polish. For every great idea, like low-penalty deaths that don’t force you to replay sections, there’s equally flawed ones, like the lush, alternate-reality cyberspace you occasionally visit for light puzzling, that would’ve best been left on the cutting room floor. Similarly, it’s fantastic that we’re not subjected to load times, but do we have to watch a 25-second, unskippable cutscene—with bad collision issues—every single time we die. For me, my love of the genre, solid combat mechanics, and a new take on an old story, totally saved this sometimes overly ambitious effort. But for some, its flaws may prove so glaring that its engaging elements won’t sufficiently gloss over them, leaving me to wonder if this planned trilogy will ever see its second act.

In the end, despite its flaws, I'm having a blast with Too Human. The looting and leveling is incredibly addictive, and if you let yourself dig a little bit you'll find a surprising amount of depth in the combat system. However I can't help but feel like the game isn't living up to it's full potential. Hopefully with a couple more layers of polish, and a few additions, the sequel can achieve the level of greatness that the series should be capable of. The story is primed to explode in the next game, and I can't wait to see how it unfolds. Until then, I'll be combing the frozen wastelands for the last couple pieces of my epic armor set.

Well it is a mixed bag but Too Human will play better as you play it again and again and as you understand the combat strategies. It has suffered from it’s over long development but not critically and I think eventually it will be worth the cost of purchase.
Too Human is a reasonably fun romp in lootville, the character customisations and modifications are sophisticated and entertaining. Unfortunately it is ruined by the fact you are basically invincible and will respawn after you die without any penalties. I can't help but feel this will only be appealing to the guys who just love to loot and not really concentrate too much on everything else. Recommended, but with reservations.

Is Too Human a dismissible "hack and slash" best eternally shelved with the likes of Kingdom Under Fire as reported from E3 2006? At times in the thick of battle it sure feels like it. But even when staleness creeps into combat and urges to "save and quit" grow, there's the enticing payoff of leveling up one more time in the quest to reach level 50 or trigger the next extensive cut-scene unraveling a story on-par with, or better than, most of what you'd find running on the Sci-Fi Channel. Diablo may continue to skirt around ever appearing on Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3, but Too Human is finally here and has a legitimate shot at successfully picking up some of the big production action/RPG-on-consoles slack.

Too Human has the makings of a memorable trilogy. The first game has set a decent foundation for its sequels but will have a lot to do before it is considered a successful franchise. Don’t get me wrong, the game is fun, but despite boasting tonnes of replayability, it fails to deliver and is marred by its repetition; not enough variety with regard to the enemies and as a result the combat gets boring. Other than that though and the obviously annoying camera, Too Human is actually pretty fun but is only really going to appeal to those with a high threshold of patience.

For everything Too Human does well, it feels as if there is something holding it back. The character customization options and great class and skill system are the kind of foundation games should be built on. But then it’s all made rather moot by the fact that dying doesn’t matter and all of the enemies scale to you. The sense of accomplishment just isn’t there. If you’re the kind of gamer that loves outfitting a character and scouring the land for that one epic loot drop, Too Human will excite you and then some. For the rest of us, it’s a decent game that will entertain you until the next big release comes along.

It’s a shame that Too Human’s combat is so repetitive, because it’s certainly a very ambitious project. The vast amount of weapons and customizations is fantastic, but it can’t save the actual gameplay. A more thought-out sequel would be great, because it has potential to be a vastly improved experience if they just added a better combat engine.

Give it a damn shot! Rent it and try It out. The game has its highpoints and big falters but is solid in the end. They online helps it alot along with loads of good downloadable content such as armor, weapons and even new classes to chose from for your character. This is a good fix until youget ahold of Gears Of War 2 or Fallout 3 which I am eagerly waiting for. It has a great storyline and is a fun game to help you learn of Norse culture and mythology. The end of the game scene is a beautiful prelude to the2nd coming and to what Loki has in store for Baldur and the Aesir!

Despite all this, it works. Unbound from the lumbering storytelling, when you and a friend are tackling levels at your leisure, hurling crowds of mechmen skywards, it’s exactly the sort of brainless destruction the game should be. The lack of four-player support is a tragic misfire, but if the presumptive claim that two more Too Humans are indeed to follow, perhaps we can hope for that from the next game. Perhaps, too, the sequel will better grasp why people play action RPGs. This one, though, is certainly not too human -- if anything it’s not human enough, an unquestionably fun time but critically hamstrung by a mystifying lack of sympathy for its players.

So, when all is said and done, is it a good game? You bet it is. Sure, it's not everything to everyone and it's not without it's weird glitches (the camera, the generally woeful cutscenes, etc) or even the occasional bug (getting stuck in place which required a restart, for example) but what's there is great fun. The combat is fast, frantic and fun, requiring you to think and move quickly, and each of the classes are very different to play. Sure there's not much variety in the type of bad guys you come up against but the enemies which are present are generally very nice to look at and very satisfying to obliterate with your weapon of choice. It's easily the best action RPG on the 360 and arguably the best on any of the modern consoles. If you're looking for something to tide you over until Diablo III gets here, you could do a lot worse.

Too Human is a controversial title at best, it really isn't as bad as many people are making it out to be, but it's nowhere near a flagship exclusive like Gears of War. What this title is though is a breath of fresh air to the common shooter on the Xbox 360. I do feel that any RPG fan or hack and slash genre fan should try this out, but it is definitely the title you should 'try before you buy', the gameplay style is very different and not completely consolidated as a genre so you really have to play the game to find out if this is something you'll enjoy. It has its major control issues, and the occasional bugs such as the disappearing enemies, but if you can get over the design flaws and hold on to the hope that there will be a patch, then Too Human might just be the title for you.

I wouldn't recommend taking anyone's advice on whether to purchase Too Human but would rather recommend you download the demo from Xbox Live and try it for yourself - but be sure to play through the whole thing and give yourself a chance to get used to it before making up your mind.

Too Human is a good game that will provide most players with a lot of entertainment. Fans of both action tiles and RPGs will find a lot to like, but know that the game doesn't nail either genre perfectly. However, loads of challenging (though repetitive) enemies, tons of customization options, an obscene amount of collectibles, and an enjoyable co-op mode make the game a pleasurable experience. Hopefully the sequels, foretold by the ending in Too Human and detailed in our one-on-one interview with Dennis Dyack, will take advantage of the game's highlights and correct some of its faults. As it stands, the game is a fun, solid title that doesn't quite live up to expectations.

Ultimately, if you're willing to learn the ropes, there's some good fun to be had in Too Human - and gamers that know what to expect are less likely to be disappointed. If you're looking for a single player, run-and-gun action RPG with an engrossing science fiction story, setting, and characters - this isn't exactly it. But if you're a hack-and-slash RPG fan with a taste for the occasional co-op game, you could do worse than Too Human.

Overall, the first instalment of the Too Human trilogy provided an intriguing story line, a relatively enjoyable new combat system and a few hours of enjoyment. That being said, some camera issues, minor control quirks and the length of the single player campaign do affect the overall experience. If asked to recommend the game as a solid buy or a rental it would really depend on the gamer themselves. For most casual players I would steer them towards their local video store, but for fans of this genre I would most likely tell them to pick up and buy this game.

Too Human ofrece un competente entretenimiento de consumo rápido, aunque reiterativo y excesivamente fácil. Pese a ello cuenta con algunos elementos que lo salvan del olvido: Buena música, acción sencilla y sin complicaciones, y agradable tratamiento y personalización de armas y objetos son sin ninguna duda sus principales virtudes. Por otra parte otros factores destinados a separarlo del resto -como el argumento o el componente rolero- pecan de escasa profundidad, aunque sin embargo hacen de lo nuevo de Silicon Knights un título muy correcto, pero del que probablemente se esperaba más como inicio de una trilogía.

They say it is unwise to look a gift-horse in the mouth, but some players may do just that to Silicon Knights after a few hours with Too Human. Considering the many-year struggle the game has been through (it was originally slated for a PlayStation release), Silicon Knights had time to polish the game and send their brainchild into the fray with its shirt tucked in and its hair combed. Despite falling short, Too Human ends in a way that suggests there will be future games made, which will thus permit the developers to take what they got wrong and make it right. That is, of course, lest they consider themselves “too human”.

For a game that has spent more than a decade in development, Too Human definitely shows plenty of strengths and weaknesses from this long duration. On one hand the combat is a fresh take on standard action titles with a well-balanced management system to fully upgrade and customize your character, while on the other hand the game is constantly plagued by inconsistent targeting, a weird co-op variant, and a half-hazard story dealing with two different styles of narrative. Too Human is not a bad game, far from it, and from the many things that the game offers, there is often more good than bad, and action fans will love what Too Human offers.

Letzten Endes schaffen es allein die wunderschöne Musik und das brachiale Kampfsystem mit seiner einzigartigen Steuerung, dass Baldur trotz vieler unfertiger Details immer weiter in die Intrigen der kybernetischen Götter vordringt. Auch den motivierenden Sammeltrieb schieben die Entwickler mit vielen normalen, einigen starken und sehr mächtigen seltenen Gegenstände an. Unterm Strich haben die Kanadier eins tatsächlich geschafft: Too Human ist wie ein gutes Buch. Es regt die Fantasie an, damit sich im Kopf des Publikums ein großes Epos abspielen möge. Schade nur, dass ein Spiel mehr tun muss, als Stichpunkte für die grauen Zellen zu geben. Silicon Knights hätte im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes mehr zeigen müssen, um jenes Epos zu inszenieren, von dem vor zehn Jahren womöglich die Rede war.

"Too Human" tenta captar a mecânica de "Diablo" e adaptá-la para um universo futurista, inspirado na mitologia escandinava. Faz isso melhor do que "Hellgate: London", por exemplo, mas ainda não consegue justificar os quase dez anos de desenvolvimento e todo seu "hype". Embora não traga tantos problemas quanto o jogo da Flagship (que curiosamente também demandou longos anos para ficar pronto), existe uma perceptível inconsistência em quase todos os elementos do jogo: as batalhas se tornam repetitivas com uma certa rapidez, a campanha é curta, o visual nem sempre é bom e por aí vai. Trata-se de um jogo muito divertido sim e que, inclusive, apresenta alguns momentos marcantes, mas nada que possa colocá-lo no mesmo patamar de jogos inovadores desta geração, como "Mass Effect", por exemplo.

Even though I sound highly critical, Silicon Knights should be commended for trying something different in Too Human. It does succeed in laying down a good foundation for any future games, and there is potential if they get a sequel out in a reasonable time. The present game is worth a playthrough, and if you’re a fan of dungeon crawlers you’ll enjoy this and find some serious replay value. The multiplayer mode is a major disappointment, and for me is the difference between must have and maybe rent. I’ve put about 25 hours total into Too Human and cleared each level twice with one character. If there were a fully fleshed multiplayer mode that supported at least four people, I would have logged three times that.

« Tout ça pour ça » serait-on tenté de dire au premier abord. Trop répétitif, voir basique, Too Human déçoit, en regard des ambitions affichées par Silicon Knights. Malgré tout, ce hack n’slash audacieux se dote d’un univers si original et attachant que ceux qui souhaitent s’adonner à « autre chose » peuvent éventuellement se laisser tenter. Terminons sur une note optimiste en espérant que ce premier essai n’est qu’un brouillon. Et que ses deux suites s’avèreront forcément meilleures.
I enjoyed upgrading my character and gathering new gear, but if you are under the impression that Too Human is anything more than a mildly entertaining (and mildly flawed) way to collect loot and experience, you’re going to be disappointed.
And you start thinking it's more of an eight out of ten. But then there's the 12 hours it took to get to the point where the game clicked and you realise, for all its charm, that it's a game that you shouldn't hate. But it's not one that deserves your love either.

It’s just a Diablo-style game under all the gloss, but that’s probably enough to get most Action/RPG fans addicted. The Norse mythology fuelled story is interesting, some of the environments are stunning, and the diversions into Cyberspace and hidden areas are fun and give you plenty to do - but Too Human ultimately comes down to lots and lots of samey combat, lots and lots of loot sorting, and lots and lots of character micro-management... and a long wait until Too Human 2 and Too Human 3 for any real pay off.

It took us just under 10 hours to complete our first run through of Too Human (the ending is particularly underwhelming, neither whetting our appetite for the next game or resolving any of the plot's twists). Ultimately it's a game that has failed to deliver on its promise or reach its potential, but it does plenty of things right, there isn't anything like it on the 360 and it retains a certain addictive quality we rarely experience.

Too Human as an RPG is a fairly average affair and although there are some innovative approaches made, they don’t really work as well as you would like them to. This game should have been so much better considering how long it’s been in production, but it’s not and it shows.

Too Human is a disappointment for anyone following its development, but an entirely playable and enjoyable experience for those willing to ignore the unnecessary hate following Silicon Knight’s latest title. Like I have mentioned before, the title isn’t without its many flaws and problems, but the good aspects of the title heavily outweigh the bad, and the amount of hate for the game seems disingenuous. That said; it feels like the game could have benefited from another year of development time, which might sound crazy given the game’s delays. The huge amount of items in the game and fun cooperative play will definitely bring you in, and the different classes and paths to take justify at least a second play though. It’s easy to find yourself taken away by negative press, but give the game a chance – there are far worse ways to spend your money.

Too Human is something of a mixed bag. There is an excellent game here, but it's buried beneath layers of problems. In the end, the game simply doesn't live up to the lofty claims made by director Denis Dyack. But despite its faults, Too Human's unique concept and addictive, fast-paced combat manage to hold it together. Fans of Norse mythology will easily find something to enjoy here, but with its short playtime and incomplete story, Too Human's price tag may be hard to justify.

Too Human is an interesting game disguised as a terrible action game. Those looking for intense battle sequences and graceful bossfights will find themselves disappointed while those looking for a holdover until Fallout 3 releases are in the right place. It's good, but it could have been great. Hopefully the next two in the trilogy will right what's wrong with this first outing.

This seems like a cop-out list of qualifiers but as long as players don't take Too Human too seriously and don't mind some of the games negative aspects, like the game's tendency to lock on to enemies that are already dead or the massive, empty environments or a quarter-realized "cyberspace" that allows Baldur to interact with the "real" world and they're playing with a friend, there is some enjoyment to be had. Honestly, when you want to tune out and just hack through hordes of rushing enemies for a half hour, Too Human fits the bill.

Ultimately though, when you start to crave any given section of the game to end just because you're so utterly bored of it, when you're hacking your way through another swarm of metal enemies utterly identical to those you fought in the last twelve (almost) identical rooms, you're inevitably going to start to feel like there's something not quite right with Too Human. And you'd be right.
Too Human certainly doesn't lack ambition or potential, but after nearly a decade in development it really needed to deliver in spades to satisfy gamers who are spoilt for choices on Xbox 360. There's little doubt Too Human fails in this regard, with its clunky, dated feel and some really questionable design decisions. Yet at the same time, there are glimmers of greatness visible if you squint hard enough at the fantastic techno-mythological story world, or the combat system that can be spectacularly fun when it works properly. In the end, the game really is just too human: flawed, ageing but with the potential to do great things. Thankfully there's a solid demo available, so do yourself a favour and try before you buy.
In the end, Too Human is all about players sculpting their ideal killing machines. If you enjoy leveling and looting, it’s well worth a look. If you only have a moderate interest, Too Human’s aggravating gameplay and irreparable plot won’t deliver many thrills. Maybe another nine years of development time would have helped.

In conclusion, Too Human feels unfinished and broken. After 10 years in development, you'd think that maybe it would have a lot less bugs and problems that it actually does. Unfortunately that's not true. Too Human is packed full off good ideas, but Silicon Knights have pretty much made a mess of those ideas - which is a terrible shame. I played through the game thinking, "If only they had done this right," or, "If only they could have done that". I really suggest you leave this game alone. If you are a hardcore Diablo lover, maybe pick it up to rent or buy it in a few years time. But for everyone else there are just too many flaws to make this game a fun and interesting experience.

So yeah, while Too Human doesn't really seem to excel at any of the things it attempts to do, it still ends up being fun to play despite the flaws. Sure, it's annoying to see that damn Valkyrie death animation every time you die, and I'd love to be able to pick out my long range targets, but I still find myself coming back to play for an hour or two every night, at least until I hit 50 with my Defender. Even then, I'm looking forward to fully leveling another class (I've sampled the other 4 for the purpose of this review), and I'm hoping to team up with some folks for that Elite Armor in the end game. So while the story element feels like a failure to me, the actual gameplay is still fun in the end, and it's enough to keep me coming back for more and more. Go into this with your expectations tempered, and I think you can honestly get some enjoyment out of it.

Too Human is repetitive, unbalanced, and frustrating, made complete with an uninteresting story. However, if Silicon Knights improves upon all the things I mentioned in this review for their sequel, they are going to have a much better game on their hands, a game that I would gladly sign up for. Hopefully it doesn't take another 10 years.

The game might have been something ten years, or even five years ago. Now it's plagued with control issues, a terrible camera and a story that fails to enthrall until right near the end. This game is worth a rent, unless you're truly addicted to RPGs.

Alla fine ? Beh, certo non è un brutto gioco, nonostante le pecche di telecamera e sistema di combattimento tendente alla frustrazione del giocatore. Chi ha apprezzato Diablo o la saga di Dinasty Warriors potrebbe comunque trovare non pochi motivi di soddisfazione da questo gioco, mentre gli amanti delle meccaniche di ruolo più pure forse storceranno un poco il naso per la scarsa possibilità di diversificazione dell'approccio. La commistione mitologico fantascientifica della trama ha un suo valore intrinseco, ma sembra ancora non perfettamente affinata, così come certe meccanismi del gioco stesso. In definitiva, un possibile capolavoro in esclusiva a Microsoft che però alla prova dei fatti si è dimostrato un gioco decisamente migliorabile. I was actually really getting into this for the first 4 or 5 hours Jung, but then I just got sick of misfiring all the time and hitting air instead because the targeting system, is fighting with the camera control. 6.5/10.

Those looking for a solid action RPG to play on their Xbox 360 would do well to give Too Human a look. The game does have its fair share of problems but it still manages to be an addictive action RPG experience. If you're the kind of the gamer that likes to play action RPGs to constantly get new items and improve your character then you might find Too Human worthy of your attention. You can even play through the game multiple times with your character in an effort to keep levelling them up and to gain better items. Some will be deterred by its problems however and it's a real shame a mess has been made of subtitling the game. I would have also liked to have seen an offline/local multiplayer option included as that would have added extra value to the game. Too Human's not a bad game then but it certainly could have been better.

With ten years of development behind it and the talented team behind Eternal Darkness, what happened here? Too Human is a mess of a game, a patchwork of levels stringed together with an incoherent storyline, visuals that could be described as glorified Xbox graphics and a control system in place that is almost unusable. Add to that the fact that the gameplay is so repetitive and the character development tree so rudimentary that you are unlikely to remain interested throughout the full duration of this short adventure. Too Human? More like "too bad".

And while the universe concocted for Baldur and his cybernetic, neo-Norse mythological counterparts intrigues, the spotty narrative glosses over too much essential material, while the naturalistic "cyberspace" segments seem contrived and unnecessary. Too Human deveria ser um título excelente. Reza a história que dificilmente um jogo com parto difícil nasce saudável e Too Human é um desses casos. É um bom jogo, com ideias interessantes, mas por lapidar, que esperamos serem recuperadas e melhoradas nas suas supostas sequelas. Falta um tom verdadeiramente épico à história, mas a acção com um companheiro humano é recompensadora, sendo possível trocar objectos. Os problemas técnicos assolam esta produção, o desenvolvimento da personagem é quase irrelevante pela falta de penalização em caso de morte e a aventura é linear. Problemas que impedem de colocar Too Human na lista dos imprescindíveis.

Usually when I play a game I don’t like, I can point to one or two things and say, “if only they would have gotten this right”. But there are too many things like that in Too Human. I’ve barely scratched the surface on all the things that bug me about this game (zombies? Really?) but I hope I made it clear how much I disliked it. I hope I also made it clear that you may like it. In fact, it’s a guarantee that someone will. Just not me. I don’t need games that make me this mad for so little payoff.

Too Human wanted to be a god amongst games. Too Human’s Ideology, customizable aspects and dual thumbstick controls all beg for a great gaming experience. Unfortunately Too Human disappoints by delivering nothing more than a standard hack n’ slash adventure. Glitches, poor A.I., and generic gameplay all contribute to Too Human lackluster showing.

Despite being in development for so long, Too Human could have still benefited from even more time. Much of the game feels half finished, and while the franchise has been designed from the beginning as a trilogy, if all three installments had been stuffed into one release the chances of it wearing on the player would have been lessened. It’s an incredibly repetitive game that has a lot of depth on the surface that becomes irrelevant once it’s put into practice. Fans of dungeon-crawling loot hunts should rent, but everyone else will tire of its shortcomings even before its brief campaign is complete.

So, we've finally gotten our hands on Too Human, but what we’re delivered is a RPG heavy on grinding, its least appealing element, and light on story development, its most interesting offering—even if does feel haphazardly thrown together at times. What’s on-hand for launch is quick-and-dirty RPG play, but here’s to hoping Microsoft and Silicon Knights will utilize XBL for some DLC. Ultimately, despite the game's disappointments with a short length and excessive battling, we’re intrigued to see what becomes of Baldur and the Aesir in the coming sequels.

Even with all the game's problems, I still managed to enjoy Too Human somewhat, simply because it did an excellent job of tapping into the part of my brain that wishes I had spent more time playing with dolls growing up. I enjoyed collecting new equipment and upgrades, outfitting Baldur with increasingly cool-looking armor and weapons, and generally perfecting my vision for the ultimate Cyborg-Norse badass. If collecting loot and customizing characters doesn't hold much interest for you, then pass on Too Human.
Too Human is a very competent action-RPG let down by clunky controls and a pervasive air of sloppiness. It's definitely worth a look for the dungeon-crawling Diablo crowd, but most will regard it as nothing more than an ambitious curiosity which never quite comes together.

I hope this score of 6.5 reflects those feelings. In a time when our industry makes too big a fuss over numbers and letters in the esoteric business of grading games, the score itself won’t be able to accurately describe both the vertigo and crash I experienced with Too Human. But the score decently sums up my recommendation for this title. My best friend asked me if he should buy Too Human, and I said "No." The game impressed me some, but it disappointed me much more.

Fehler sind menschlich und daher ist Too Human schon fast zu menschlich. Auch wenn ich Fehler hier nicht als Bugs ansehen mag, sondern eher als falsche Entscheidungen der Entwickler beim Gameplay. Warum muss ich mit dem rechten Analogstick das Schwert führen? Warum darf ich die Sterbesequenz nicht abbrechen? Warum macht man sich so viel Mühe mit den Zwischensequenzen, wenn sie derart langweilig herüberkommen? Was sollen diese aufgesetzten Rätsel in der Zwischenwelt? Fragen über Fragen, bei denen die Entwickler unserer Meinung nach einfach die falschen Schlüsse gezogen haben. Kurzweilig mag das Action-RPG durchaus Spaß machen, doch auf längere Sicht ist es einfach eine große Enttäuschung, was den Kauf zum Vollpreis sicherlich nicht rechtfertigt.

Too Human is another game that falls in the “could have been much more” category. Even though this game has been in development for many years, there are just too many design flaws that keep it from becoming a “must have” game. Hopefully the next game in the series will fix many of these flaws and become the game we all hoped it would be.

A mon sens, il y a sous ces énormes débris quelque chose d'un grand jeu, quelque chose qui aurait pu nous marquer. Mais objectivement il n'en est rien, accumulant fragilités, bugs et mauvais choix de la part des développeurs. Ce Too Human loupe le coche et parvient fébrilement à retomber sur ses pattes. Malgré ça, c'est avec une certaine envie que j'attends le second volet de cette trilogie, car la base est tout de même intéressante, à Silicon Knight d'apprendre de ses erreurs.

Difficile de donner une note à Too Human tant il semble déséquilibré. Pour chaque élément réussi, pour chaque idée lumineuse, on découvre une maladresse et une lourdeur. Si vous vous délectez d'une customisation poussée, si vous appréciez de batailler ferme pour donner corps à un personnage unique, alors peut-être que le soft, malgré ses faiblesses, parviendra à vous combler. L'histoire en revanche, ainsi que les combats, ne sont pas à la hauteur de ce que Silicon Knights nous laissait espérer. Reste un fait incontestable quel que soit l'angle adopté, Too Human constitue une déception. La profondeur de cette déception dépendra bien évidemment des attentes que vous placiez en lui.

As the first part of a planned trilogy, Too Human doesn't do a particularly good job of setting things up. If anything meaningful happens in this game aside from establishing a villain, it was lost on me. The only way I got anything interesting out of it was to start searching for web pages devoted to Baldur's place in Norse mythology to see how many liberties Silicon Knights is taking with its fiction and to see what sorts of things could lie ahead in the next games. As a game, the action is a little too straightforward for its own good. The latent loot fiend in me had fun uncovering new items, slotting runes, and finding blueprints for new items--but even that stuff doesn't feel as fleshed out as you'd probably expect. In short, large parts of Too Human feel like they were designed to the standards of the last generation of consoles, not this one.

I really wish there were more positive things I could say to outweigh the avalanche of grump. It's not that bad, but then "not that bad" is the highest praise it deserves. A more cohesive game, with an engaging story, might be able to overcome some of its many flaws. But this game, with this story, and this many problems, is always going to be on shaky ground. It's rather fitting that this is still being touted as the first part of a trilogy, since it definitely feels like one third of a potentially interesting game.

Too Human has been in production in various forms for 10 years, but somehow, it still feels like an unfinished game. The plot is half-baked, the gameplay is simplistic, the replay value is hurt by the lack of variety, and glitches are commonplace. While the very basic framework of a fun game is there, it's weakened by all the flaws. In theory, the simple push-stick combat system works great for a Diablo clone, but the lack of abilities means that combat quickly becomes repetitive, and as a result, fights become boring mighty quickly. I wanted to love Too Human, but the end result is just too incomplete to really enjoy. If any of the game's features had been fleshed out a bit more, it would have been a significantly better title, but sadly, that may have to wait for the inevitable Too Human 2 instead.

It's up to SK to listen for once to the critics and gamers and fix these problems if the second installment is green lit. Too Human has the foundations of a great game and for that matter a stellar series, it's just a bit misguided. With the proper attention to detail Too Human 2 could very well be the game that Denis Dyack promised, but for right now it's only a shadow of the god it could be.

Then again, the repetition found throughout most of the game's bridging mechanics may have been poised to sink this ship all along.

Overall, the problem with Too Human it just doesn't stand out in any meaningful or significant way. While stuff like the graphics, controls, gameplay and inventory and item system each seem satisfactory on their own, collectively they combine to produce a generic RPG that doesn't really seem strong in any particular aspect. The premise combining Norse mythology with a cybernetic world is somewhat interesting but the lack of any real character development in the storyline beyond the typical "evil guy vs good guy", not to mention a terribly disappointing end, results in the game's potential strongest point, i.e. the story, to only being a notch or two above mediocrity itself in implementation. If you're the type of gamer who is easily had by RPG's in your quest to level up, then Too Human will probably keep you occupied from start to finish, but even then you can do that with a rental. For everyone else, go play Mass Effect instead.

There are further idiosyncrasies to note, including awkward camera angles and the occasional glitch (for example, doors that won't open when you approach them, but open if you leave and return). These and other issues don't make Too Human a bad game, but they make it a disappointing one that revs its engine only to come to a screeching halt moments later. When that engine kicks into full gear, the slicing and dicing can be surprisingly enjoyable. Sadly, these moments are too few and far between, making Too Human stand out as a perfect example of awesome but unrealized potential.

Most gamers are bound to complete the main campaign very quickly and when they do, they'll have precious little to remember it by. What's more to the point, Too Human offers a rather lousy rendition of well-known characters and deities from the Norse mythology. The gameplay feels like it could've amounted to so much more than a routine sequence of smashing the living crap out of the same types of enemies over and over again; alas, it didn't. The classes and the huge amount of skills are mildly entertaining. You could rent the game and try it out, but that's as far as I'd go.

We like to think that when a studio takes an extremely long time to produce a game, it's because they're making such a ridiculously good, polished product and the delays are just due to their perfectionism. However, with Too Human, it seems like the game was ripped apart and put back together many times during those years and it ended up with a lot of vestigial or half-finished features from the various versions. It's possible you might enjoy it but overall it's a hard game to love. Now that Silicon Knights finally released the game and the monkey's off their back, maybe they'll bring a clearer vision to the planned sequel.

Et comme tout cela se joue aussi en ligne, c’est à qui possèdera la plus belle armure, la plus grosse épée. Evidemment, pour parvenir à impressionner ses pairs, il est indispensable de se coltiner des heures et des heures de massacres confus dans des environnements parfois hideux, de supporter cette prise en main ratée et de tenter de suivre les circonvolutions enfumées d’un scénario saugrenu. Beaucoup jugeront que le prix à payer est bien trop élevé. Mais la félicité du guerrier collectionneur passe forcément par quelques – longues – souffrances, non ?

Balancer ce genre de lieux communs n'est jamais très glorieux, mais en l'occurrence, dire que Too Human, on l'aime ou on le déteste, est tout à fait à-propos. Car en dehors des indéniables qualités du jeu (univers intéressant, l'aspect RPG très travaillé...), le joueur devra faire face à de non moins indéniables défauts (réalisation bancale, combats brouillons, lourdeurs dans le gameplay...). De quoi largement et sévèrement diviser les foules en somme. Quoi qu'il en soit, il est évident que l'objectif de Silicon Knights de s'imposer avec un Dungeon-RPG original et spectaculaire n'est pas rempli. Trop d'imperfections, d'approximations ternissent leur production. Pourtant, les accros du genre, adeptes du level-up à outrance et aimant passer des heures dans l'inventaire de leur héros, trouveront dans Too Human de quoi assouvir pas mal de leurs envies. Dommage que le reste du jeu ne suive pas vraiment. Voire pas du tout.

Deprived of a decent storyline, innovative mechanics, and limited variation in either enemies or environments, Too Human is barely worthy of a weekend rental. It's an extremely repetitive treadmill set in a world you'll never get a chance to actually learn anything about thanks to the almost complete lack of exposition. Whatever points it scores for its somewhat interesting approach to combat are almost instantly retracted once you perform them for the umpteenth time on the same robot that fights in the same way. Unfortunately, Too Human can't even provide decent graphics at a consistent framerate, as graphical hitches and choppy visuals are a regular occurrence. All of these negatives leave little reason to recommend Too Human.
Too Human, more than most other releases, has unfortunately fallen victim to its extended development. There are a lot of ideas in place, but none of them are implemented particularly well. The result is an overcooked mess, a game which would be occasionally entertaining were it not for the fact that it clearly could have been so much more. For Too Human, hype was the game-killer. It's certainly not terrible, but the unrealized potential and clunky design secure it a foothold which falls well short of good.

Dass dieses Spiel fast vier Jahre Entwicklungszeit hinter sich hat, merkt man höchstens an der leicht veralteten Grafik. Die Idee, die Kampfbewegungen auf den rechten Ministick zu legen, ist ein weiteres Ärgernis. Schwammiger gehts nicht. Die immer gleichen Gegner in fast identischen Spielumgebungen sind ein weiterer dicker Minuspunkt, aber der Überhammer ist die öde Wiederbelebungs-Animation, die Sie sich rund 100-mal ansehen, aber nicht abbrechen dürfen. Das ist gerade mal "ausreichend".

When I started Too Human, at first I was amazed that the issues which I thought were going to drive me nuts didn't really affect me at all. I was worried about the fixed camera angles and the overly-simplified control scheme, but all through the first level I was happily bouncing along murdering and destroying without a single disappointment. Then the rest of the game happened and I was reminded that just because a game has been in development for a decade, that still doesn't mean it's necessarily any good. The atrociously unbalanced difficulty, ridiculous loot management, infuriating death penalty, and overall poor design of the title rob it of any real joy it could provide. I don't know how you spent your last 10 years, but I'm going to spend my next 10 trying to forget that this train wreck ever happened.
Personally, I think that Too Human, Haze and Lair form the evil triumvirate of the biggest letdown games this gen. Too Human is too easy, it lacks any kind of narrative structure to keep the player going and, well, the game, when viewed from a distance, is a boring one. I'd really only recommend this game to two kinds of people – the Diablo guy who is obsessed with loot drops and equipment upgrades, and the person who read this review and said, "He's being harsh. It couldn't be THAT bad…" Well, it is. But its no big deal, really, Fable 2 and Gears of War 2 hit before the end of '08, so one bunk exclusive won't dent the 360's armor too much. Lets all just hope that this planned trilogy fizzles out; I really don't want to play this game, its sequel or its sequel's sequel, ever again. C'mon Silicon Knights, give us Eternal Darkness 2 instead of this silliness!

At the very least, the cyber-Norse concept of Too Human is a good one that's worth exploring further, just not in this context. The game is simply schizophrenic; it attempts to be all things to all people and never succeeds in executing any of them well. The end result is in dire need of polish and focus, and that doesn't solely apply to gameplay mechanics. There's absolutely no reason why a game released in 2008 should have a bug where characters can fall through solid ground and into some pseudoabyss.

Yes the loot can be cool, and cleverly named, and assigning skill points helps you to develop new abilities but because the enemies get more powerful with you, the very last battle you fight feels exactly like the first. If this doesn't bother you, you can jump right into a new campaign with your current character upon finishing, so that you can bring Baldur up to the level 50 cap. You'll get about half way there on your first trip through, an effort that will take 10 - 15 hours, depending on how much time you choose to spend in the menus. However you choose to play, by yourself with the full, messy story unfolding in front of you, or with a friend, bereft of a narrative but beset by twice as many enemies and twice as much potential loot, Too Human provides and uneven and ultimately unsatisfying experience. If to err is human, than the game's title is unfortunately, particularly apt.

Too Human had a lot to live up to after 10 years of imaginings and re-imaginings, and it's sad that a game which was slated for greatness fell so far from it. There is a certain point in a game's development cycle where losses should be cut. Too Human has been on life support for years, technically alive, but without the majority of it's facilities intact.

On nous promettait monts et merveilles, Too Human était censé enflammer les foules et tirer partie de la puissance de l’Unreal Engine 3. Au final, après plus d’une dizaine d’années de développement, Too Human n’est rien d’autre qu’un hack & slash ultra-classique et souffrant d’un nombre incalculable de défauts. Difficile de croire que Microsoft Games ait « payé » pour un tel résultat tant ce Too Human a tout du gigantesque pétard mouillé. Une vaste comédie qu’on aura tôt fait d’oublier ! Dommage, tout n’était pas forcément mauvais.

Too Human is een actie-RPG waarin het RPG-aspect er niet toe doet en waarin het actiegedeelte zelf niet sterk genoeg is, om het spel te dragen. Wat overblijft is een lineaire, eentonige rit waarin je honderden, nee duizenden dezelfde vijanden ombrengt op dezelfde manier.

I want to say that Too Human is flawed, but it's not. A flaw would suggest that mistakes were made, but when you see the game in action, it becomes quite clear that everything has been done on purpose. Silicon Knights made no mistakes when it chose unresponsive analog controls, nor was it an accident that the game is designed with regular player death and repetitive unskippable cutscenes in mind. These arrogant decisions were all made on purpose and as such, Too Human is its creators' perfect vision. It's just a shame that the vision is absolutely terrible and should never have been turned into a videogame. Thank God it's as short as it is, because I was more relieved than disappointed to find it was suddenly all over.
