AmigaACE (Advanced Computer Entertainment)
Detailed, colourful graphics (almost full-screen scrolling), great music and heaps of playability make this a brilliant conversion of the coin-op - even if it's not completely accurate. Just the kind of game to cheer you up.

More colourful sprites, full-screen scrolling and superb tunes make this even more fun than the ST version. If you're after an original and fun-packed game, check this sucker out!

128K sound on the Spectrum is quite amazing; five of the arcade tunes have been included to set the mood for a very playable conversion. Graphics are colourful, the only slight niggle being that some of the riverbank enemies are a bit indistinguishable from the undergrowth. But in short, Toobin' on the Spectrum is the best of the three version we reviewed here.

This is a faithful version of the coin-op without being a pixel-for-pixel conversion: the control system has been well translated, but more importantly: 16-bit Toobin' has all the fun and playability of the original. Check it out.

Looks, sounds and plays great. An excellent conversion of Tengen's weird and wonderful coin-op.

Join tube dudes Biff and Jet as they cruise down river and get their trunks into a twist with all kinds of trouble! Re-released under the Respray label, this is a competent conversion of a cult arcade game which did well in its day. Toobin' is enjoyable and challenging, with plenty of laffs and more than a few surprises, but falls down on long-term appeal. Still, definitely worth a look at this price.

This arcade conversion didn't do too well first time round, which is a shame cos it's a bit of a spanker. The graphics are bright and slick (and rather chucklesome), the vertical-scrolling is slippery smooth and there's a host of fabby 128K tunes. As for the game itself, we're into Bubble Bobble territory, in the sense that while it's okay for one player, it's really best with two. You can barge into each other which promotes, erm, friendly rivalry. With floating gates to paddle through, bonus cans to collect and some fiendish river designs, Toobin' is jolly playable. If you want another two-player game to beat your pals at, this is well worth the dosh. Not quite a Megagame but a wazzy little barg all the same - it's faster than a piece of string and almost as addictive

One of the more original coin-ops to appear last year was Atari’s Toobin’, based on that decidedly uncommon sport of sitting in an old motor tyre and shooting down rivers. In this country that is probably about as healthy as drinking raw sewage given the state of our waterways, but that did not stop it being a cute idea for a game. Toobin’ turned out to be surprisingly playable. I remember the first item I saw it I nearly walked past because it looked like one of those children’s novelty games. It is true there is nothing to obliterate, beat up or rip apart, but hey, give it a chance!

As with the Amiga and still with great tunes. Toobin' is one of the craziest games around. ST owners get your armbands out.

The background graphics are great, and thankfully the problem of seeing (or rather not seeing) your attackers doesn't arise on the Amiga. But the poor quality of the sprites is just not acceptable on the Amiga. Still, it's playable and the Hispanic tunes set a hot and sweaty atmosphere.

Decent scrolling, but some of the sprites are a little indistinct. Still, this conversion captures of the spirit of the coin-op, and its addictive and enjoyable.

Two of the coolest tube-dudes around, Bif and Jet have set out down the river in two big tyres, searching for a party! In between this and them are some of the wildest, craziest and nastiest stretches of water around, and they've not even been privatised. Appearing on the riverbanks are Indians, irate fishermen, penguins, bottle-toting drunks, mad Arabs, hillbillies, Sphinx, skulls, and many other totally uncool squares who throw various objects at the heroes. The water itself is full of tube-bursting things like torpedoes, sewer slime, and twigs and branches.

The paddling sounds are annoying, but a peppy soundtrack and a nice variety of other sound effects compensate. Toobin' is an enjoyable diversion at its competitive best when played against a human opponent. During the time of the game's release, Atari rewarded players who found all the hidden letters (spelling out TOOBIN) with a T-shirt.

The Japanese are renowned for coming up with abstract, off-the-wall game ideas like bubble blowing dinosaurs in Bubble Bobble and the brothers Mario in their surreal world. The ‘tubular dudes’ are in keeping with the tradition: two dudes in tyre inner tubes paddling their way down rivers.

Basically, it sounds packed with variety, doesn't it? Well, um, yes, it is... in theory. I only caught the coin-op briefly at the PC Show (for some reason it appears to be missing from all our local arcades) but I think the basic problem lies there. The pretty coin-op graphics were dead cartoony and appealing, packed with visual variety, and brought the basically limited gameplay alive. Now we're playing the same game in glorious two tone Speccyvision and it's lost out rather a lot. Suddenly it all appears too slow and too samey. It's not that I don't like simple games (I do) and it's not that I found the control system unfriendly (though it was a bit difficult to come to grips with), it's just that nothing about it grabbed me. I started playing with every intention of having a good time, but, unfortunately, Toobin' turned out to be a bit of a good time free zone. We did try it with two player and there was a bit more life to it, but only just.

Most players will not feel compelled to play Toobin' extensively, purely because of the game's rather limited design. However, it similarly makes a fun game to simply pick up and play for a short period of time. For gamers who want to play a simple game during brief lulls in time, Toobin' will please.

Weighing the facts, Toobin' is a game that has to be sampled before purchase. Some will be drawn to the quirky gameplay and find it an inviting skills-type game, overlooking the game's notable flaws. Others though, especially those familiar with the arcade game, may find Toobin's innovative ideas buried under a sea of unforgiving control and limited replay value. The loss of the competitive duel feature is unfortunate as well.

The system has breathed new life into older 2D games (such as Yars' Revenge and Ghosts 'N Goblins), but Toobin' is one of those titles that should have been left to the big screen.

[Budget re-release] In today's ever-more-competitive budget market, you can do a lot better than this for your £8. Spend your money on something like IK+ instead.

I love the classics, but I never cared for Toobin'. And I absolutely don't care for Toobin' ¿ if it was an exact port of the arcade game, it would have gotten a 5.0 at most. With the terrible controls, lack of water currents, and gameplay glitches, that knocks a few points off the score. It's not the worst Game Boy Color game, but it is one of most pointless.
