Another Code: Two Memories is a unique DS game that has an open market to flourish on. So far its success has been moderate in Europe and Japan, but with the US version out this month it is hoped this superb adventure game gets the attention it deserves!

Another Code is one of those games you shouldn't judge by its cover — or rather, by reading the back of the box. It will tell you it's about a 14 year old girl named Ashley who must find her long-lost father on a remote island. This father, incidentally, spent years researching human memory in a secret government lab. While this description is correct, the words "secret government lab" led me to expect some sort of cheesy sci-fi/mystery affair in which one would ultimately Save The World From A Dangerous Experiment™. Instead, Another Code (entitled Trace Memory in the US) revealed itself to be a quiet and intimate character-driven story punctuated by simple, though often quite memorable, puzzles.

The gameplay is one of the best parts of this game, as no game could have been so instinctive, as you can play a bit differently from the way you are playing common adventures titles, whether it is on consoles or on PC. The game is perfectly using the two console screens, as well as its touch screen and microphone.

Sod it. Another Code is the best game I've played on the DS and is getting marked accordingly, whether you like it or not. And if you complete it and feel short-changed by the length? Just take it back to Game, or flog it on Ebay. Then you've lost little or nothing and you've had just a gorgeous gaming experience you'll never forget.

Adventure's Planet

Just Adventure
What it does offer, though, is a game that takes advantage of the full capabilities of the Nintendo wonder-machine. It couldn't exist on anything else in anything other than a truncated form, unless you want to fork out for a tablet PC with two monitors! So, if you're looking for some old-school adventuring with a new twist, own a DS (and there are more and more reasons to own one every week, it seems), enjoy the idea of a Nancy Drew-esque story with a supernatural/sci-fi twist and can put up with the short running time, head out to the shops this weekend and pick it up. It's guaranteed fun for young and old alike.

Adventure's Planet

"Another Code: Two Memories" is a briljant point & click adventure game for your DS featuring some of the best design work I have seen on this new handheld console and the game is very addictive. It's well designed and easy to master as well. Unfortunately it's way too short since after 6-10 hours I completed the entire game. And while there are lot of puzzles to solve and other riddles ... replay value is too short since most of the time you'll remember what to do or what to search for. You could ask yourself wether this is really worth your money. But right now, this is really the best point & click game I have ever played on a handheld console. Besides its innovation that the game brings to the genre, using the touch screen with the stylus is always a joy. In other words, a great adventure game but ... a bit too short!

Trace Memory is an excellent way to kill $30 dollars and a few hours...and I do mean a few. The game is over before you know it, though there is some replay value with a second ending and trying to find every item and unlock all of D’s story. The puzzles are fun, if not challenging, and there is a great variety and use of the DS. The story is one of the main draws, not even breaking character to explain the controls, since the DS is a character! Finishing this game will probably leave you hungry for more, both because of its size and its story, and the game even teases you with the possibility of a sequel. See you in two years, Ashley!

Another Code: Two Memories is the first point&click adventure for the Nintendo DS, a bit like we know them from the early PC era. A much spoken about title that wasn't supposed to be released outside Japan but due to the many requests from fans did come to the US and Europe. A title that got a lot of attention but got released earlier than expected... does the early release bring problems?

Computer and Video Games (CVG)
Despite these flaws, Another Code is such a charming and superbly presented title that it's hard not to recommend, albeit it with certain provisos in place. If you're a quality-deprived adventure game fan or simply looking for a refreshing, unique alternative to the current crop of me-too titles on other systems then you absolutely owe it to yourself to give Another Code a whirl. Just be aware that the game's brief playtime and innate genre flaws mean that you probably won't be playing for all that long and while you are, you aren't necessarily going to be having fun absolutely all of the time.

Pelit
Silti tekijöille pitää nostaa hattua: he eivät ole sortuneet keinotekoisiin pelinpidennyksiin, kuten äkkikuolemiin tai tiukkoihin aikarajoihin. Lisäksi Another Code todistaa, miten hyvin DS sopii seikkailupelien alustaksi.

I played through to the end, and I think that most who pick Trace Memory up will do the same, but that's what the caveats that here is some serious frustration in the quest. Struggle through, though, and you'll be rewarded with a few moments of pure puzzle transcendence.

I loved this game all the way through. It is short, so if you’re still in doubt, pick it up later when it drops in price. But do yourself a favour and try this one out sooner or later. I’m hoping for a sequel, or at the very least more adventure games for the DS. Graphically this game is stunning. The music is excellent but all other sounds were average at best. Fast loading times, interesting story and great use of the DS its functions make Another Code a fantastic game. This is not a very difficult game but thanks to the DS it has several unique puzzles. At the very least one puzzle will totally wow and amaze you once you figure it out, but sadly you don’t need to solve this one to beat the game so I think a lot will miss out on a great experience.

Trace Memory serves up an interesting story with a handful of inspired puzzles that are all too quickly conquered. Fans of adventure games seeking a quick fix and a new sort of mind-bending puzzle-solving will enjoy this game while it lasts, but making it last is one puzzle that this game doesn't quite figure out.

As an adventure game on-the-go for younger gamers, Trace Memory offers a solid challenge and a very good presentation and use of the touchscreen. Older gamers can give Trace Memory a miss – although it demonstrates the possibilities, it’s not quite up to the task; it’s not all that engrossing.

Gamestyle
Another Code is not a game without its problems: its short length, its stilted dialogue, its murky 3D graphics, its ridiculous name (seriously, what will the sequel be called?!); and yet there is an ineffable quality to the game that transcends these shortcomings. This is a game that will hopefully be succeeded by others of its kind. It's a seminal stepping stone to a family of similar titles which can afford to go the extra mile and get it right. Another Code may be a small first step, but it's a good one.

If you know what you're dealing with, then Another Code can be a hugely immersive experience that's totally unique among handheld games. Sure, adventure games have appeared on handhelds before, but none have been so perfectly tailored to the strengths of the system. If you need you thirst for adventuring quenched, Another Code is an essential purchase, but novices need to bear in mind that this style of game is very much an acquired taste, and experts should be mindful that compared to the adventuring greats it's not exactly in the same league. That said, it's a very welcome release and stands alone, making it a great curiosity purchase if nothing else. Now pass me the solution before I go completely nuts...

Game Informer Magazine
Even though this game plays to the DS' capabilities, I hope that second-rate adventure titles like this don't become the standard fare for the system, because Trace Memory proves that being creative at using the system doesn't necessarily make for an entertaining game.

The DS as a system is a natural fit for adventure games -- it's portable, and the touch interface is every bit as good as a mouse for pointing at and clicking on things. It's just a shame the system's first significant adventure sticks to such familiar territory. It's not a disaster by any means; Trace Memory a good choice for adventure novices, or for anyone craving an intriguing mystery. Less avant-garde than Indigo Prophecy, far less self-important than Myst V, Trace Memory is the very definition of a safe, comfortable, middle-of-the-road experience.

Gameplanet
While delivering a decent gaming experience, it's all over far too quickly. There are some extremely innovative puzzles but the replayability is based purely on trying to get the best ending.

Nintendo Vision

G4 TV: X-Play
Ashley’s stubbornness aside, Trace Memory is worth a play-through, but not worth owning except by the most die-hard adventure fans. For others, it’s the perfect rental, lasting only a few short hours and, like most adventure games, doesn’t have much value beyond that.
60
IGN
Plotline flaws and forced game structure aside, Trace Memory isn't entirely a waste. Even with the awkward and sometimes irritating dialogue, it's a good read from beginning to end, and it's a game that will fill the gap as a lengthy bedtime story. The game's dual ending structure isn't enough for true multiple plays through, and the only way to get the "good" ending is to simply be meticulous enough to click on every little thing that appears on the screen. No skill is required beyond some patient reading ability and basic problem solving, and there's not a whole lot of reward for doing things right the first time around. Five hours of playtime is all this game offers.

Factornews

Sliced Gaming (GameBiz)
Another Code: Two Memories suffers from some serious issues. The fact that they deliberately ensured that you can't pick up items until you need them is just a lame attempt to lengthen what is already a short game. If you ignore the silly plot and poor control, you could breeze through it in a few short hours. It's really not worth your time, and I'd be hard pressed to recommend a rental either.

GameSpy
Given the somewhat simplistic (yet way angst-filled) plot, the short length and easy nature of the game, and the fact that the main character is a young girl, I'm beginning to wonder if Trace Memory was indeed intended for younger audiences. As a "my first graphic adventure," it works pretty well, with some unique puzzles and some interesting characters to get involved with. Veterans of the genre, however, will come away wanting more. Maybe it's time for LucasArts to get cracking on a DS port of Grim Fandango.
