This is the kind of game that will have you showing up a bit bleary-eyed at work, because you couldn't quite bring yourself to stop playing late into the night. Traitors Gate is indecently fun.

Graphically, the game is excellent, if not ground-breaking. What's uncanny is the sense of accurately recreated real places. I toured the Tower of London fairly recently, and it was an amazing experience to find myself in many of the exact same places in the game that I have been to in real life. Only Golden Gate has ever given me this same experience, and it's a real thrill. I want to see more games that do this! How about games with settings like Grand Central Terminal, Central Park, Seattle's Space Needle, or the Louvre?

I’m really concerned about the Daydream Software team. I’m afraid they are all going to be slapped with a vicious lawsuit when Traitors Gate is released in these litigious United States. Why? Because someone is going to be so absorbed in this game that he’ll lose his job.

All in all, we are left with a brilliant idea that is not executed quite so brilliantly. The non-linearity results in the lack of a flowing story. The game is often frustrating, and is, at times, simply too difficult. Considering the unrewarding ending, you may just want to buy these hours of your life back!

This game is very challenging and engaging. Once started, I found it difficult to stop. After I did pause, I was surprised that three hours had quietly passed. I wasn't so much surprised that I had already played that long, but more that I failed to notice my family moving about the house around me! I was thoroughly enthralled with the plot.

It’s been quite a while since an adventure of this nature has genuinely held my interest. Thanks to the great story and concept behind Traitors Gate, however, I found myself plugging away well into the wee hours of the morning. Given the $20 price tag, it’s a great buy — Traitors Gate will serve you well.

Traitors Gate comes on four CDs that deliver immersive, realistic, intelligently crafted, and long-lasting adventure; and all of that will cost you only about 20 bucks. It's a great price for such a fine product--the most interesting adventure game I have thus far played this year.

Traitors Gate is challenging and interesting to play especially for fans of hi-tech gadgetry, though perhaps it is not for the easily frustrated ... one particular timed sequence caused me much anguish. You really do need to think about what you are trying to achieve and what is preventing you from doing it. However, exploring the historic structures that make up the Tower of London is absolutely fascinating, you may even discover one or two secret passages if you keep your wits about you.

I think it's safe to say that Traitors Gate is the best adventure game yet this year, and seeing that I'm such a fan of the genre, that's not a compliment I hand out freely. If you can bear a few annoying technical glitches, the game should provide weeks of entertainment. Having finished it, I'm just going to sit around and wait for the next Daydream/Dreamcatcher adventure game. No doubt the plot will involve some guy who has to break into something.

As you begin Traitors Gate, you enter a CIA briefing room to receive the details of your mission. One of the CIA's top brass has gone bad and is going to steal the British Crown Jewels using the CIA's own secret information. Naturally, rather than inform the Brits as to what is going on, the CIA wants you to secretly replace the real treasures with fakes that have a homing device in them. This is the simple story that controls everything that you do in the Traitors Gate.

Even so, it's good fun once it's actually working. Traitors Gate is admirable for being both logical and nonlinear. The latter is especially noteworthy - you could easily play through the game several times and take a different route each time, at least until the somewhat linear endgame. And if you don't mind the unrewarding ending, you'll most likely want to play it more than once just to see all of the locations you missed the first time. Traitors Gate isn't an excellent game, but it's very good.

From the moment I began playing Traitors Gate I could tell it is much, much better than its predecessor Safecracker. At first, though, when I was stuck in dark dingy Tower chambers, it seemed as though getting out was going to be an exercise in the kind of torture reserved historically for those imprisoned in the Tower itself. But, as I stayed with it and progressed through the obstacles, I found this taut adventure to be really gripping, with an expanding range both diverse and enjoyable and I wanted to come back to it over and over again to make it to the end. So while there are notable deficiencies, particularly in the audio and interface, in the end I find the play experience to be a refreshingly different and immersive one. While you need to have a real passion for puzzles to love Traitors Gate, if you can just have the patience to use your head (and your inventory), the mission of making it through will seem not so impossible.

The puzzles are both ingenious and down-to-earth at the same time. Since the game takes place in a modern-day, 'real-world' type of setting, you have to solve the puzzles with normal means and items, without using 'magic', or anything similar. I've always liked that in puzzle games. For instance, in one puzzle that involves a locked gate, you have to realize that the tanks nearby are oxygen and acetylene, turn them on, use the spark-maker you had found in a closet to light it, then burn through the bolt of the lock. No spells to pull your bacon out, no clicking on a tank and hope it will solve itself. It's just you and your wits, the way God intended a puzzle game to be played. I only wish that such a fantastic game did not suffer from the poor quality control that Traitors Gate has.

Traitor’s Gate is a worthy title. If you do not have the constitution for shooters and chess is too slow for you, Traitor’s Gate is right up your alley. It will provide many hours of enjoyment in which you will actually get to use your brain more than your trigger finger. There are some annoyances like the CD and resolution switching issues, but they only detract in a minor way from the overall game experience. There is plenty of room in the Mac game market and Traitor’s Gate is a welcome addition.

All in all, Traitor’s Gate is a well made game for puzzle-solvers with or without an interest in the Tower of London. But if you haven’t liked this kind of problem solving games before, there’s nothing in Traitor’s Gate that would make you change your mind.

WindowsGame Chronicles
While it’s far from the perfect adventure title, Traitors Gate does provide real world puzzle solving in a somewhat interesting environment, something that is pretty much missing from the market otherwise. Cypher is just around the corner and if that piques your interest, then picking up Traitor’s Gate and killing 12 or so hours crawling through the Tower of London would probably suit you just fine.

Classy as it is to work a reference to flatulence into a review, Traitor's Gate is the real stinker here. An online hint system or the slightest nudge to indicate the step that must be taken next would have gone a long way towards improving the product's image. Siphoning puzzles and important clues out of a mountain of junk is the real task, putting what you've discovered to good use is merely icing on the cake. Twenty dollars buys many things, but if used to purchase a copy of Traitor's Gate, peace of mind won't be one of them.
