An excellent value for one’s money; everyone should at least try this game. **A VMU save is an absolute must to get the most out of it though! High points: graphics amazing, art design an inspired fusion of hip-hop/rave underground and futuristic vision, sound effects good with trash-talking a plus, excellent electronic score, 15 tracks and almost 20 challenges (ranging from racing to stunting to fused mix of both), challenging track design with secrets throughout and floating AI difficulty (not a plus for everyone), fun practice area, and an approachable system for stunt combos integrated into racing. Improvements expected for next game: additional moves and differing animations of moves, more signature moves, more insane tracks (but preferably as secrets), statistics between surfers meaning more, a 2 player mode with DC-to-DC link connection, and network capacity with online arenas and tracks.

I was very satisfied with Trickstyle. It made me and made me a “believer” in games that don’t exactly look that interesting, yet there is always more in Trickstyle, you always want more. My advice is making this one of your first buys.

Unbelievable graphics with realistic control, techno-pop music and challenging gameplay make for a great first round effort by Criterion. For me, the load time is long and the frustration level is above normal (partly because of the realistic control). However, if you put the time in, you'll surely reap the rewards you seek...

Fazit: Action, Speed und unglaubliche Tricks, was will man mehr!

Trickstyle isn't a breakthrough game in any regard. It isn't particularly new or intelligent. It is, though, a very well-designed twist on traditional console racing fare. By incorporating the snow/hover/whatever-boarding aspect into the game, and quite seamlessly, Acclaim has come up with a racing title that will surely give you hours of enjoyment. In fact, the biggest hindering factor in Trickstyle is the lack of network play. This also limits the replay value; after you've beaten it (and it will take a good chunk of time; those later levels get pretty hard), there's not much incentive to go back and race head-to-head. Still, for some no-brainer racing action that looks cool, or simply to satisfy your thirst for eXtreme gaming, Trickstyle hits the spot.

Also: Sie kennen 08/15-Formel-1-Simulationen bereits zur Genüge?

In the short term at least, Trickstyle is a lot of fun. It might be little more than WipEout on a board, but it is extremely polished and has some original touches. Even the generic dance music is listenable. However, its longevity is in doubt and with no championship mode as such it lacks much lasting appeal. An accomplished player will be able to get through the majority of the 15 courses within a couple of days, and the other challenges, while certainly well-designed and cleverly balanced, aren't necessarily enough to warrant a great deal of commitment. Trickstyle does what it does well, and for those with a limited attention span it's a perfectly good game. However, two weeks down the line it'll probably be tomorrow's chip paper. But that's console games for you.

I really like this game. . . on the Dreamcast. If you have a DC or have wanted one, this is a stellar game for it. Otherwise, I would be very wary of it due to the number of problems that I ran into trying to get it working. The people at Criterion took some extra time to polish the PC version, but in the end I found no end of compatibility problems, from problems with DirectX 7 to trouble with joysticks to problems with ATI video cards (which are everywhere) to just being buggy. I really wish that they had spent more time with the hardware on the PC and upcoming versions of DirectX. Installation and hardware compatibility aside, this is a great game. I just can’t lay those things aside when it comes to the PC.

DreamcastAdrenaline Vault, The (AVault)
Not only does TrickStyle prove to be the technological showcase I expected, the game also comes up ahead on several counts, proving to be one of the most entertaining “boarding” titles I’ve ever come across. Still, for all I found to love about it, this product doesn’t manage to capture the level of fun and excitement that would be inspired by a true classic, and also lacks much of the depth and variety which graces its competitors on other platforms. If a sequel is in the works, then let’s hope it addresses some of the control issues, adds some personality and character to the game, and conveys a true sense of speed to the player. For now though, what we’ve got in TrickStyle is a perfectly playable title that needs a little work, making it a prime rental candidate if nothing else.

In the end, the four stunt bowl maps are much more fun than competing in the fifteen races. The great graphics are hampered by an inconsistent frame rate and although the physics modeling allows for some great stunts, the game can get old quite fast. Still, even though it is repetitive and shallow, I do find myself going back to the stunt bowls trying to pull of that 1080 mid-air back flip!

So if you're looking for the next big thing in tricky board sports, keep looking, but if you want a racing game with a ton of style give this one a try.

63
WindowsGameSpy
TrickStyle is a fun little console game for casual gamers but when exposed to extensive analysis it falls flat on its face in terms of challenge and longevity. A disappointing title that could have been a lot better with more time and thought.
62
WindowsGameSpot
In the future, according to TrickStyle's manual, a long period of war has given way to a utopian corpocracy called the One World Confederacy. Jobs are scarce and unneeded, so in the absence of meaningful labor, the bored populace turns to hover-ride racing for entertainment. The hover-ride is a skateboard with its wheels replaced by a jet engine. Ported from the Sega Dreamcast, TrickStyle is a game about racing hover-rides, and a game whose fancy graphics substitute for both length and depth of play.

WindowsAdrenaline Vault, The (AVault)
TrickStyle is certainly a fun racer, with gorgeous graphics and more than decent music and sound effects. As an arcade racing fan, I really enjoy the special thrill of the fast aboveground hoverboard action. But there is nothing really innovative in this title to distinguish it from the vast array of other highly competent arcade racers out there. If you want a break from car and bike racing and crave the feeling of a breeze in your face as you speed along winding passageways trying to keep your balance on a fragile board, then go out and buy this one and you will not be let down.

WindowsEurogamer.net (UK)
Ultimately, gameplay loses out to stunning visuals - once the sheen wears off, there is very little left to make you come back for more. Let's hope conversions of other top Dreamcast games are not merely direct ports, and tailor the experience for PC gamers' tastes.

WindowsGame Revolution
You end up with a average, unimpressive, at times frustrating game that needs a more serious patch than the one currently available. The flashy graphics just aren't enough to satisfy, and the tricks are nice, but unnecessary.
50
WindowsComputer Games Magazine
So basically, it's a decent single player racing game with some flaws. On the PC, that doesn't really cut it anymore. Let's just hope that if Acclaim makes a sequel, they decide to spend a little more quality time with the PC port.

DreamcastThe Video Game Critic
The control is average at best. Taking tight turns to be problematic, and it's hard to ride the rails. These problems are amplified in the challenge stages, where you're expected to pull off a series of tricks with precision. The futuristic music is appropriate, but somewhat unpleasant. Trickstyle is entertaining enough, but it's not a standout title.
